The Dems New Dilemma
February 8th, 2008By Pamela Gentry, Senior Political Producer
Posted Feb. 8, 2008 – The dueling Democratic frontrunners now have to decide whether to continue the “beat down” on each other or move on to the inevitable Republican nominee, John McCain. That’s a tough call, but with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney out of the race, it’s time to a decide.
Romney, the main Republican challenging McCain, announced his decision during a scheduled speech to the Conservative Action Conference in Washington. The folks attending expected to hear his pledge to fight on. Instead, Romney dropped the bomb that he was “suspending” his campaign.
“I entered this race because I love America, and because I love America,” he said. “I feel I must now stand aside, for our party and for our country.”
The folks in the Omni Hotel weren’t the only ones surprised by the announcement. I received his public appearance schedule via e-mail from the campaign for an event in Baltimore that evening that was quickly cancelled.
But Romney’s departure has less impact on the Republican race and more impact on Democrats. Republicans know how to close ranks, and they will around the indisputable frontrunner, McCain of Arizona.
McCain can now coast his way to the nomination, and focus his attention on wooing the conservative base, without wasting energy countering a tough Republican rival. But things are different for senators Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y) and Barack Obama (D-Ill.), who are still in battle for delegates.
While they are in a dead heat for state delegates, Clinton leads Obama with “super delegates,” which are made up of elected officials who’ll commit at the Democratic Convention. The last thing the Dems want to do is have the nominee decided behind closed doors, by other elected politicians.
This week Clinton disclosed that she loaned her campaign $5 million leading into Super Tuesday. She’s also stepped up her demand that Obama do more debates. Some political insiders say this is her attempt to maximize her own exposure with little financial cost to her campaign. She’s also reduced the role of her political partner President Bill Clinton on the campaign trail; you may have noticed that he’s far less visible these days. Meanwhile, the Obama campaign has reported raising $32 million in January and $7 million since Super Tuesday. (Clinton raised $4 million since Tuesday.) Also, while Obama has said he will engage in a a couple more debates, it’s unlikely that he’s do what he can to aid in Clinton’s need of free exposure.
This battle could get bloody for the Dems, if so, the two candidates could defeat themselves before McCain get’s a shot at them.
Romney said his decision to leave the race was necessary to “ensure” that neither Clinton nor Obama gets elected president, already starting to level his partisan attacks.
Now the Dems will have to figure out how to run this race without destroying each other and alienating each other’s base. If the last two standing Democrats don’t keep this race clean, it will get ugly at the National Convention in Denver, and the nominee will leave the convention with only half of the party’s support.
That won’t be enough to win in November.
Should Clinton and Obama call a truce and becoming running mates?

Pamela, really dont see a concern here. Yes it will get ugly before its getting pretty. I call it the Swan Theory lol. Moreover, what you see in the case with the movement from Barack is something unique. Not since JFK have you seen this surge in excitement and interest. That is not going a way. To be completely candid, it goes beyond the Democratic Party or even Barack Obama. What is primarily the make-up of Obama’s base: African Americans, Generation X (18-45age), Professional White American Men, and Americans in general who are in the transitioning stages of moving from the middle , upper middle, to lower upper socialeconomic classes. Ironically, like the Conservative Republicans, a group that has felt that have had no voice in the recent years, or their voices were starting to diminish.
Moreover, the case with Obama’s base just feel its their time. Whether now or in Novemeber. They are mostly the Post Baby Boomer Generation. Some of which are participants in the Democratic process for either the first time, or the involvement has been limited. Moreover in a MSBC poll, Obama has the strong appeal to pull moderates Republicans and Independents not even in the Democratic Party which would give him in lead with McCaain. Leaving time McCain has had to prepare neutralized. Regardless, I believe what we have is a New Generation of the Democratic voter that will stay charged and unfaded by any organization the Republicans will do, on how long this battle for the Democratic Ticket last. And as you see ,they have the Money to be in it for the long haul
I disagree with joe only on one point I do feel they need to become running mates and focus only on the issues at hand and trying to win votes but not through belittling one another.I speak for myself whhen I say I get tired of seeing political ad commercials where the politian is saying all the negative statements about their opposition and how they are so much greater if their put in.That’s not saying you’re the best candidate for America you’re just better than the other person they’re talking about. After awhile i just turn it off and start looking at any other candidates. So if they don’t want a republican as presidential they need to stay off each other and focus on the race itself.
For Obama and Hillary to become running mates would destroy both of their campaigns. Unlike the Republicans, what you see in case of Obama and Hillary is two movements. Movements I say. Maybe before these campaigns became that, but both are two huge larger than life figures now. They expand futher than their message. For either to sign up for the other would be seem as disloyal to their bases, particularly with Obamas. Remember many of Obamas supporters are new to the political system, they are not old blue bloods playing the game. Many of them joined his campaign because they wanted something different. Not more of the same.
JOE, more of the same is what they seem to be getting from obama now. washington elite’s support, a huge bank account, well-oiled political machine. sounds like he is one of the old blue-bloods after all!
point: “joining forces” would not destroy their campaigns. i think it would wipe mccain off the map! you would bring together these huge throngs of support from both sides. older voters, women, latinos for clinton, young voters, men, and african americans for obama. you’ve covered all your bases. i’ve actually heard a lot of people on both sides (repub. and dem) willing to switch sides if their candidate didn’t get the nomination. i for one would vote for mccain if hillary didn’t get the nomination. HOWEVER, i would totally reconsider if she was VP nominee.
this race is unlike any that we’ve ever had. i think it’s time for a bold, new approach to presidential politics. i think combining efforts would be a great idea. ideally, hillary is president, and obama is vp. that way, you obamaniacs can get your fix while he’s veep, and then he can run after hill’s 8 years.
HILLARY 2008
http://www.hillaryclinton.com
ok, as a veteran, i must say this…STOP SAYING THAT YOU WILL VOTER FOR MCCAIN IF HILLARY OR OBAMA IS THE NOMINEE!!!! this election isn’t about you!! mccain would have had my vote if he hadn’t sold out by pandering to the conservative base by keeping the bush tax cuts permanent(he was against that) setting up bases in iraq, and his stanc eon immigration.if hillary gets the nomination, i’d rather vote for her over mccain. personally, i don’t think that they should join forces because their message would totally contradict that. especially obamas’. i’ve known of way too many people who are over there(iraq) and have done 2 or more tours. it’s really not worth it. and btw, obama gets most of his money on line. the thought of him being the “establishment” was very funny to me considering that he’s not running on name recognition alone and he was able to raise his money mainly grassroots style and now hillary gets the message.
I think Gephardt would make an excellent choice for Obama’s Vice President. If Al Gore had chosen him as his running mate, he probably would have won the election even after a huge number of his votes were stolen.
LILBABY26, i don’t understand your point in the beginning? for me, it’s about leadership and experience. hillary has it. obama, not as much. if it were down to obama and mccain, i would vote for leadership and experience.
second, obama gets money from supporters through his campaign, but also has access to money from moveon.org. this organization was created around the ridiculous impeachment proceedings of bill clinton. they were established to help the country “move on” from that time in our history. now they are a HUGE organization, firmly ESTABLISHED, and supporting obama. he also has access to that old democratic nominee john kerry’s email contacts from 2004.
if he wasn’t establishment, he is quickly becoming so.
HILLARY 2008

Kris,
While that isn’t the most absurd thing I have heard it’s pretty unintelligent. Obama becomes the political machine that he himself stood against simply because he starts pulling ahead for a win? That’s preposterous.
Lets look at some facts about your candidate:
Clinton is an unqualified phony (her campaign paid for acting lessons for her to learn to shed a tear) with no experience what-so-ever to be president!
Are people so blind they can’t remember or understand?
- The White House Travel Office
- The missing law firm billing records
- A Profit of $100,000 from $1K investment in Cattle futures?
- What LEADERSHIP or EXECUTIVE level position has she ever held? (being 1 of 100 senators is NOT an executive position)
- What Military experience does she have to be Commander in Chief?
- What job has she ever gotten that wasn’t because of who her husband was?
- Why was her top fund raiser Norman Hsu?
- Why won’t she release her FULL Tax records?
- Why won’t her husband release all the names of donors to his foundation?
- What major legislation has she had turned into law, and not something where was just a co-sponsor, but what has she written and led through congress? – Answer nothing!
- Her first Healthcare Initiative, which FAILED, and the secretive process she used to run it. So much for openness and transparency.
- Why won’t her husband release the documents from his presidency so the public can see what work she actually did, and what she contributed since she claims it counts as experience?
- Where did she get $5M of her own money if she has been “working in public service for the children for 35 years”?
- When asked how her new Healthcare program would be paid for, her recent answer was that there are many mechanisms, and she would “go after” people’s pay checks!
See a trend here? I do and it’s called dishonesty or at the very least shady.
Now here is what I think. The Republicans pretty much have a snowballs chance in hell of winning an election this year. What at least makes that snowball more viable is if the perfect scenario for them comes up which is if McCain takes Huckabe as his VP which unifies the conservative vote which he himself is not doing so hot with right now AND the democrats go into the convention tied. In that scenario the Democrats have a soft spot in the armor that the Republicans could very well take advantage of.
But this is not an easy situation otherwise it would have already been resolved. Barack now has some real power here. Hillary needs him far more than he needs Hillary. Barack has shown that he can bring in the money and he can create excitement among voters in a way that Hillary cannot do. If forced to take a backseat role, Barack could very well split the DNP (Especially if he did something crazy like run Independent) and that WOULD be a situation in which the Republicans could pull off a win here.
It’s a touchy situation but in my opinion Barack is holding all the cards. She may have some old school politicians in her pocket still, but Barack has a few of his own as well as the support of a huge base of voters who are more in support of the man than the party.
I AM VOTING DEMOCRAT NO MATTER WHAT- NO ONE CAN STOP ME! “HUMANS VOTE ISSUES BEFORE COLOR!”
OBAMA SHOULD NEVER CONSIDER HILLARY AS A RUNNING MATE. SHE CAN’T BE TRUSTED,IN OTHER WORDS SHE IS A WOLF IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING!AS FOR NOW HE SHOULD KEEP THE FOCUS ON THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION BECAUSE BILL AND HILLARY ARE GOING TO TRY EVERY TRICK IN THE BOOK AND EVEN SOME TRICKS THAT’S NOT IN THE BOOK TO WIN. BARACK SHOULD STAY ON THE SAME PATH,WHEN ITS TIME TO DEAL WITH MCCAIN HE WILL COME THROUGH WITH FLYING COLORS.
Watching ABC News this week, these guys dont have a clue. George S. should recant himself, being a former Clinton aide. Their show plays on people’s intelligence. I love how they making Hillary the poor mans candidate. Also, how they keep reiterating that Obama Cant Win Hispanics. Thats called subliminal suggestion. They are really playing all Obama supporters like a fool. Like you at the end will fall in line. Insulting you, while not insulting you. Very simple strategy. Lets show that it wont work. Those in Texas, Penn, and Ohio. You are up next. Lets go!!Obama 08
I think Billary needs Obama more than Obama needs Billary….Obama would hurt his chances of wining an election with Hillary on his ticket given her baggage..namely bill! They continue to distance themselves from African Americans and focus on the hispanic vote now…i.e. no show for Hillary in Louisiana or South Carolina.
I would be shocked if Barack chose Hillary or accepted her as an running mate. Also Hillary won’t show those financial records cause as an actual “political party” themselves, the Clintons play by there own rules.
I see this playing out as Barack Continues to rack up states, popular votes, new voters, and delegates and the superdelegates jumping ship to Obama. It is as clear as that. The Dems want their party to be strong and with the influx of new voters driven by Barack, they cannot risk losing them to the old guard/party of the Clintons. The Super D’s cannot ignore the facts when he is about to double her in states won and has pounded her in voter and financial support.
Hillary has peaked in her support! White women cannot win an election and that is her STRONGEST base….they have thrown in the towel on young voters and african americans….literally
by the way…Go after paychecks mean…I will “garnish your wages”….lets not be stupid…Hillary we all know what that means…
HEY JOE) WHO ARE YOU AND WHERE DO YOU COME FROM

I also think it is sad how the Clintons have used and dismissed people, ideally minorities in this elections. It is now a parade of Hispanic supporters and “latino language” they use to get what they want from them….
It was wrong how she DID NOT go to Louisiana, especially New Orleans, where people still do not trust our government. But it is not surprising because that is what THEY DO!
I wonder how Hillary will spin her getting smashed 5 times in 48hours….from the east coast to the west coast….YES WE CAN.
By Wednesday morning…Barack could have won primaries and caucuses in 50% of the country…thats 50%! From the east coast to the west coast and everyone inbetween…even the islands!

NEWS FLASH***MAGGIE WILLIAMS, African American sister who is a longtime organizer for the Clintons has now take over as Hillary Clinton’s Campaign Manager. Maggie from the past with Bill has been very strategic and methodical. Look for the Clintons now to play the race card more with African Americans ie. Obama is the “Black Candidate” to scare away whites, and to use itimidation tactics to get the Hispanic vote. All eyes on Texas, this is where Maggie will try to use one of the most influential members of the Congressional Black Caucus, Rep Sheila Jackson Lee (18th District Houston)-3rd,4th Wards, to try to control the black and brown voters. Sheila is Co-Chairing Hillary’s group in Texas. Maggie also in the past started Bill too playing the sax and going into African American and Latino churches. All those who have voted in their states who support Obama, please go his website http://www.barackobama.com and get involved. IT IS VITAL!There are calling lists to donation you can be involve. IF you believe any little can help. Texas is now the largest populous state, meaning one the most delegates slots. This is where Maggie will have Hillary. I heard even as soon as Tuesday from my sources come to Houston. Lets show them that the Brown and Latino communities are not controled by the “Old Guard ” anymore with race bating or their “poverty pimps” which play more on race and socialeconomics, than providing a clear message for CHANGE and leadership empowerment based on the Issues. Obama 08
I’m an independent voter. I’ve never been one to blindly follow the Democratic Party as so may Blacks do.
I am glad to see that Obama’s campaign is doing so well and his base of supporters is energized. But please people do not be naive and think Obama is any different than any other politician who campaigned as an outsider. I’m not saying this as a negative. I’m just saying that politicians, no matter their race, will say what ever they need to say to get elected.
For example, an earlier poster, Mike, I believe asks a list of questions regarding Hillary Clinton. I’m not going to go thru them one by one, but please have facts to back them up. Where have you seen or heard that Clinton took acting classes so she could cry? You cite her military inexperience - was Obama ever in the military? No candidate will be able to touch McCain when it comes to National Security issues.
Support your candidates and research the issues. Do more than take their word for it. Think about how they are going to pass their proposals with the Congress they are going to be dealing with. How are they going to pay for all of these programs? It’s taking the easy road to say that Obama will fix every thing when he’s president.
I don’t know who I’m going to vote for yet. Obama’s speeches are very inspiring. But I have never voted for gives a good speech. He may get my vote if he can tackle the student loan crisis and the debt many students find themselves in trying to get an higher education.
Keep supporting Obama and his candidacy. If he wins, I hope he’s every thing you expect him to be because that will be good for every body.
Take care and question every thing. - http://www.unfilteredopinion.com
Marques, I agree with you take on politicians on some points. But this is politics isnt it?
As for Obama experience or inexperince….Research Obama. He is also Constitutional Law Professor. He teaches how governement works, who else has that experience?
True McCain has a long stellar military record. Also worked hard in Washington for the Veterans. Yet as a former Naval officer, having military experience doesnt make you neccessary qualified to run foreign policy. Some postions in the military are tactical , some are strategic. Foreign policy decisions are strategic. Whether Obama has had military experience is irrevelant as long as he has strategic advisors. In addition do research and you find quietly Obama he has had mentoring from Colin Powell as of recent. I think we get to caught up on military experience either way. Thats like saying some of the greatest football coaches that ever coach couldnt coach because the never played the game.
As for Hillary, no she hasnt probably taken acting lessions lol. Yet, we must admit the Clintons have use theatrical tactics, particularly now since Maggie Williams is back at the helm to sway emotions. Not even saying thats totally a bad thing, I am saying dont be naive to think that is not the case. After all it is politics.
At least Obama has a record of doing what he says, and saying what he does. Every elected official can not do it alone. That is why Obama has had a message that has appeal to independents, moderates, and new voters. The polls have clearly demonstrated that. That is something very refreshing when you are trying to create new change. The bottomline, if you keep doing what you have been doing, keep expect to keep getting what you have been getting. Barack at the very least represents something different. I agree if you want to understand clearly his issues . They are very articulately outlined at http://www.barackobama.com He clearly states his positions on the issues.
I agree…McCain gets a free pass when it comes to foreign policy….which he shouldn’t….
Can anyone explain McCain’s position on diplomacy? Is it the Bush plan where we threatin’ you to agree with us then force “our perfect american” ways on you…..
How would McCain do in speaking with other foreign leaders? How would he differ from Bush…
Here is McCain’s foreign policy….”I will follow Bin Laden to the gates of Hell”…No you won’t McCain cause Hell is hotter than you think and for that matter why are we looking for him in Iraq?
as far as foreign policy, i want someone who is tough as @#$^ in the white house. i want someone who is going to use diplomatic means as far as that will take them, and then kick a$$ if necessary. i DO NOT want a president who has said that he would sit down face-to-face with leaders like ahmadinejad (iran) in his first year in office. what a naive statement! that’s not how it works. i think mccain and clinton would both be strong on foreign policy. you don’t have to have been a former muslim to understand how to negotiate with the more radical extremists.
on another note: someone brought up a good point on one of these blog entries. would African Americans be sooooo against clinton if there wasn’t obama? if it was hillary and an old white dude (let’s say kerry), would African Americans be demonizing hillary?
it wasn’t that long ago that AA’s were suckling at the %%~ of the clinton’s, and exulting them. what has changed?
HILLARY 2008
http://www.hillaryclinton.com
I was spotlighting Hillary Clinton for the purposes of understanding what the Republicans are going to go after when they have their chance. No Barack Obama does not have any military experience and I agree with you about McCain on national security issue. That being said (And yes the Hillary acting classes was a joke) do you really think McCain is going to stop short on things like her “crying game” and her stance on the Iraq war, and all the little things she keeps hiding? My guess is no. My guess is that they will go for the throat this year because they have to. Hillary is the least likely candidate to go toe to toe against a McCain.
Being Tough as #$@! is what has gotten us labeled as the most arrogant bully on the block….which is why people are willing to strap themselves with bombs to blow up as many of us as possible….Every muslim in in foreign countries are no extreme…that is what the “fear” tatics want us to believe
The truth of the matter is ….listen to some of the stuff the Iranian leader has said about US…there is actual truth to it! Did Iraq ask for Democracy? Our foreign policy has made NO effort to negotiate, talk, or anything of the sort…we flex our muscle and turn our back at the same time. YET…we do it against lesser nations… North Korea has TOLD and FLAUNTED their nuclear program/weapons at the world but we are not running over there or threatning them…WHY….they have as much muscle as the U.S.
It is easy to talk to tough when the enemy is the size of California. Besides all of that…our foreign policy needs to be secondary to our domestic policy against terroism….in the past 30days I have heard more stories about babies and mothers being killed in this country….lets take care of home first.
If Hillary and Bill showed their “use and abuse” methods to African Americans with an all white dem race…I think people would still feel the same….
Does anyone know how Hillary is going to spin losing tomorrow?. That would be 8 straight!
AHHH but we won California….yeah right Hill..that was weeks ago….5 and counting…Hill, time to shut it down…
KELIN,
being tough is not what has gotten us labeled arrogant. it is the use of force WITHOUT diplomacy, and with scant evidence to support our claims. i made the point that we have to pursue true diplomatic avenues FIRST, and then, if that doesn’t work, defend the homeland here and abroad.
the point is, ahmadenijad (sp?) is a TERRORIST. did you know that he was involved in the iran hostage crisis in 1979 which killed several american military? many hostages were held for over a year, and he took part. so, “president obama” would sit down to tea and biscuits with him and just chit chat about how he would appreciate it if iran didn’t support terrorism and constantly threaten israel? not having it.
obama has said, ON RECORD, that in his first year in office, he would sit down with leaders of countries like iran and north korea and negotiate. that’s not US policy. that’s wrong.
so, truth to what the president said? he also said that there were no homosexuals in iran. hmmm? really. he’s not credible, KELIN.
i don’t want a green, starry-eyed novice in the white house, who looks about as ready for the job as a 5 year old wearing his dad’s suit.
oh, and super tuesday wasn’t “weeks ago”, it was last week. actually, less than a week ago.
Kris, I see you still here stirring the pot lol. I thought we lost for a while. Put it this way , I am in Texas this week with some organization efforts. This Movement is Greater than You or I. Obama 08
Kris, we always have room for you at the Table. We could use your research skills. Let me know. I will make that call :)OBama 08
Kris,
Your darn straight he said he would sit at the table with countries like Iran and North Korea and US Policy is what got us into this mess in the first place. Thus the whole idea around “change”. Change isn’t necessarily wrong, it’s usually that most people fear it.
Our old school ideas of bullying everyone else into our way of doing things and our way of thinking is making enemies and in this day and age some of these other countries are not countries we can afford to hold our old “bully” stance with because we are fast becoming overshadowed by countries such as China whose economy and military force are nothing to be ignored.
Diplomacy is the answer even when things are tough. Now that is not to say we are to back down when we do get to the table but it certainly means that we meet to understand each other, understand the issues, see what compromises are available, and try to solve for a peacful solution.
The days of sitting back comfortably while our Air Force deals with any potential threat are over. The game has changed and it was already proven that our sense of security was indeed false during 9/11. I don’t know about you but I worry about the safety of my children.
Diplomacy and communication are the first best steps toward problem solving.
Joe, why do I have to be “stirring the pot”? This isn’t an obama blog, is it? I mean, isn’t this a forum for free and open expression of ideas. so, we’re all to conform and just agree that obama is the best candidate? i’m not stirring the pot, i’m contributing to the conversation. and if i didn’t, it would start to get a little boring here.
Mike, I absolutely agree with you that diplomacy and communication are the first best steps. But, i think it’s easy to forget something. lots of people want to kill us. i DO NOT WANT a president who is going to treat iran and ahmadenijad with kid gloves. sitting down at a table with terrorists sets a bad precedent.
i don’t mind u stirring the pot a bit neither kris, but y is ahmedinejad a terrorist to u? y do we (us) consider those that don’t like us terrorist and extermist wen it is us fighting them in their countries? al qaeda only makes up 2% of the forces we’re fighting in iraq, but everytime you turn on the news, it’s us fighting al qaeda. obama is doing somethin that’s already been done by at least trying to broker some kind of talks betweeb our enemies. what we’re doin right now sounds like a dumb rap beef where one side put’s out a mixtape to trash the other and vice versa just to sound tough. we’re just waitin gto c what the other side does in case we need to start poppin. we don’t need to put our military in that kind of position. obama shares a unique sense of the world in part becuase he is a person of color and happens to look like them, but also he lived in a muslim country amongst the people and can better relate to those people. hillary does bring the fact that she is a woman, but those countries probably wouldn’t take her as serious because of their views on women.
kris, what is it that you don’t understand about what i said? compare hillary to obama and her record to his. she’s a little too comforatble with the coporations and the special interests groups. edwards during the sc debate pointed out that these groups would want something in return if they are giving money to her. obama has NOT taken a dime of corporate money. also, during bill’s administration, they had the opportunity to create true change in goverment. but once the politcal winds shifted, they backed out. gays in the military, universal health care, sudan, etc. check her position on iraq. voted for it. funded it. check her reasoning for voting for it. now she wants to pull the troops out in 60days. how is she to do that when the “surge” is working? and compare all the shady land deals, the scandals and not to mention that she the most despised woman of the republican party. the clintons refused to work with the republicans on numerous issues and sought to destroy that party. that’s y they are hated.
i had to digress about the voting for mccain if hillary is nominated. i would really like to support mccain, but he has it wrong on iraq and the bush tax cuts. but i was making the point about people not voting for hillary. i’m no hillary hater, there is no reason to hate that woman, but i do point out a lot of facts about her and that i just personally don’t think that she would be an effective persident. this is supposed to be about what’s good for the country. and if mccain is nominated, it would be 4 more years of the same thing. which is xactly what hillary may b offering. hmmm……
lilbaby26, ahmendenijad IS a terrorist. that is not me just calling him that. he was involved with the iran hostage situation in 79, and it is widely believed that iran supports insurgents to some degree in iraq. he has also repeatedly made threats against israel, including wiping them off the map.
as far as the obama money issue, it’s not that cut and dry. obama has in the past taken money from lobbyists, corporations, and political action committees (PAC’s). it was okay to take money as an illinois senator, but not now?
moveon.org supports his presidential campaign, as does hopefund (hopefundamerica.com), a PAC set up just to support obama. obama is the chair.
you think obama’s the best, i think hillary. that’s okay. let’s just agree that i’m right!
mark penn is the cheif strategist for hillary and he is executive of countrywide, a subprime mortgage lender. she’s also taken money from insurance and pharmetceutical companies. how is she to go after the same people she’s been taking money from? the lobbyist and special interest groups are the reasons y washington operates the way they do.
as i have said, i am a vet, my unit is to deploy to iraq soon. please hold her feet to the fire on the iraq issue. she never renounced her stance and i think she voted that way for political reasons…saddam, call him a terriost or a evil dictator, actually had it right about keeping order in iraq and the country stable due to it’s history. we can’t just go and bomb iran, or anyone else that doesn’t agree with us. and we certainly can’t call them terrorist or that they belong to the “axis of evil”. we can’t hav a us versus them mentality wen it comes to the rest of the world. the situation in iraq is a delicate issue and if hillary took the time out to read the national intelligence estimate and had the courage to vote no, then maybe she would have some credibility on her side instead of reading the polls and only thinking about how it would benefit her in the 08 election.
kris, Now you getting bored? I couldnt imagine that. Dont get your pants in a bunch. I like your participation, eventhough I admit sometimes a little unsubstantial. We agree not to agree, and because we do agree greatly doesnt mean we have to hate each other. Still dont know where you got that last point in the early post however. lol 100years of success my friend. Joe
LILBABY26,
hillary has admitted, and doesn’t apologize for the fact that she has taken money from lobbyists. i also don’t agree that washington should work this way. but it does. and if obama were president, it wouldn’t, i know. and he’s going to give free money to everyone and no more homework! sounds like a lot of 8th grade, student body president promises.
you didn’t address obama taking money from lobbyists? and moveon.org?
i think that she has explained why she voted for authorization to go to war. not ONE of the elected officials who voted for authorization could have wished or imagined that it would be soooo poorly mismanaged. the authorization wasn’t to wage a losing war through bufoonery.
about terrorists. you are an iraq war vet and you still have a pollyanna-ish view of the world? wow. we CAN call leaders of countries terrorists, and we CAN label them as part of an axis of evil. we CAN have an us versus them mentality. YES WE CAN! (haha) we can because they exist. and they don’t like the united states. and the interests and safety of the united states should come BEFORE any other country. that’s one reason why we should leave iraq. i once taught in a public high school, and seeing students without books, and learning in sub-par facilities really ticked me off when we are blowing TRILLIONS on a stupid war. our interests should come first, however, not at the sacrifice of positive relations. there’s a fine line there that bush has blurred.
theoretically, diplomacy works. but that includes an assumption that the other party truly wants to be synergistic. who knows what obama would’ve done if were actually a senator at the time roll was called in the senate?
JOE, i believe a majority of my comments are highly substantive, thank you very much.
CLARIFICATION:
this is from what i just posted:
“and the interests and safety of the united states should come BEFORE any other country.”
My meaning is this: to someone running for president, the interests of the united states should come first before positive relations with iran. if iran is a threat, then we need to be sure that isn’t escalated, and if it is, then take proper actions. the above statement IS NOT TO MEAN that the united states and its interests are more important than any other country.
NO WE CAN NOT CALL EVERYBODY THAT DOESN’T AGREE WITH US A TERRORIST
NO WE CANNOT CALL EVERYBODY THAT DOES NOT AGREE WITH US A TERRORIST OR INSURGENT WHEN IT IS US FIGHTING THEM IN THEIR COUNTRY!!!!!
y are my posts not going through? as i have said, u must not know anything about the islamic faith, y those countries are in the mess they are in and y they hate the us, and quite frankly, you’d rather defend a person that voted for this kind of war, funded it while millions of people’s lives are destroyed for politial purposes. somehow you are the only one to except her reasoning to go to war when everybody knows different. shame on you. wake up!! we are not always right about everything!! and if we want cooperation from these countries, then we need to work with the rest of the world. we won the war militarily, but now we need a political strategy and the only way is out. i could care less is iraq is broken up into 3 countries, it was only formed back in the 30’s. they are just not ready for democracy right now. iran and north korea has wmd and are not afraid to use them. we need to approach these situations thoughtfully and not sit there and just throw the military out there to solve our porblems. because to be real honest, not too many people want to go on multiple tours and hope that we make it back to our loved ones while the rest of america “supports the troops”.
you have also failed to make a connection between lobbyist in washington, and why things never get done. by these politicians taking money from corporations that feed us poisons in our food and give us more poison to correct the poison that mad us sick inthe first place, jack up interests rates when we miss one mortgage payment, and deny us coverages for our health needs, they become part of the problem. we must stand up to these special interests groups and not sit here and act like it’s the way it works because we can’t do nothing about it. i thought that’s what change was all about, getting the peopl to demand real action in goverment.
obama has said from the get go that he has not taken any money from special interests groups. move.org has about 3 million members backing him, but never really mentioned anything abuot giving him money. they certainly hold no real power over goverment officials, not like exxon-mobil, bristol-meyers-squibb, blackwater, etc..
LILBABY26,
i NEVER ONCE said that we are right about everything or that we should label those who disagree with us “terrorists”. that is misrepresenting my position, and the position of many much wiser people than myself.
we should really be blaming bush and the defense department for bungling the war in iraq. intelligence was skewed to make a case for the war. bush and rumsfeld and cheney had this in mind ALL ALONG. so, don’t blame clinton, kerry, edwards, schumer, or mccain for mishandling a war in iraq.
many people want to only see black and white. there are shades of gray. it’s not, totally diplomacy or totally waging war. we can be sternly diplomatic, applying pressure, WHEN NEEDED, and still keep warm relations while being sure we are nuked off the map.
and if you think political action committees don’t hold power over politicians, who run the government, then you need to wisen up. obama has in the past taken money, but suddenly found religion when it was considered hip not to do so.
but fine, if you think obama is jesus and can do no wrong, then vote for him.
WILL SOMEONE WHO SUPPORTS OBAMA JUST DISAGREE WITH HIM ONCE ABOUT SOMETHING? buncha sheep.
Not A Single VOTE for Obama-New York? ~~ HERE IS THE SITE WITH THE INFORMATION:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/16/nyregion/16vote.html
Black voters are heavily represented in the 94th Election District in Harlem’s 70th Assembly District. Yet according to the unofficial results from the New York Democratic primary last week, not a single vote in the district was cast for Senator Barack Obama. ~ That anomaly was not unique. In fact, a review by The New York Times of the unofficial results reported on primary night found about 80 election districts among the city’s 6,106 where Mr. Obama supposedly did not receive even one vote, including cases where he ran a respectable race in a nearby district.
kris, i didn’t mean to offend you. but what i said is true and you know it. but let’s be real, you can’t blame bush entirely for the war and hillary certainly can’t blame him for voting the way she did. she simply did it for political reasons. that’s what it is. because of her vote as well as other dems vote, we have a quagmire and not to mention our economy is going down the toilet. it wasn’t the fact that the war was mismanaged, we wasn’t supposed to be there anyway. i got a lot of crap for that kind of thinkin while in the service, but i was right all along.
obama is not perfect and i do know that he has skeletons in his closet. not like the clintons, but i know that he has skeletons. he still has not taken money from corporations i.e. businesses to fund his campaign. also, please take time out to read his plans on his website and actually get the message of his speeches. quit listening to the pundits and the media about him lacking substance and experience. the same thing was said about jfk, fdr, and reagan. that is call SPIN. bill clinton did NOT have foreign policy experience and was from a small state but actually had intelligence and common sense. hillary wants more debates even though they had about 18 with 2 more to come. if you don’t know about his issues now, then someone hasn’t been doing their homework. she’s had a poorly managed campaign, is running out of money and momentum and now she’s on the attack by playing the victim.
please elaborate on the substance and experience bit to me
for me, here’s what this race comes down to.
i want someone who has experience with being in the white house, with health care, with economic policies, with diplomatic relations with foreign countries and leaders, and someone who is strong on foreign policy.
hillary had a front seat during her husband’s presidency. NO MATTER WHAT, you CANNOT discount that invaluable experience. at the very least, she learned protocol. you just can’t deny that that is valuable experience. but she was more than that. she worked on health care, she has a lot of her life. her package wasn’t adopted by congress, but she has that under her belt. she traveled to many countries and met with many foreign leaders. that is also important. she has a certain credibility that comes with that. she voted for authorization for the iraq war, which i think was the wrong choice then and now. but of course i don’t agree with EVERYTHING she has ever done. i have a mind that intuitively tells me what i think is right and wrong. i disagree with her on that. but i think she has forwarded policies to right that wrong. i also believe she understands the threat that our country faces, and has proven that she can be sternly diplomatic with countries like iran.
i don’t think it’s fair to compare bill clinton in 92 and obama in 08. first, bill had been governor for more than a decade. that is first hand experience in running a government. i also think that was a valuable experience for hillary. although neither hillary or obama have experience running a government. but i also don’t think it’s fair to compare bill and barack because, it’s cliched, but we live in a different world now. the things barack as said about singing kumbaya (i’m being silly now) with leaders from other countries who have a proven record of support of terrorism, does not wash with me. i feel like obama is too green. i would not mind at all a clinton/obama ticket with him as the v.p., but i just don’t feel or think he is ready for that position.
sorry, but her experience as first lady should not not count because if this be the case, then we are going to end up with a co presidency. yes, she was in a unique posistion to get some real insight on how washington works. but she wasn’t the one passing/vetoing laws. she didn’t have to sit through national security briefings. and if experience is still on the table, mccain wins it.
some people will try to compare bush to obama but the fact is that we KNEW back in 99 that bush really wasn’t that bright, didn’t know where some countries were and could not speak english. at least obama is much more intelligent than THAT guy. bill clinton ran a small southern state that didn’t have a huge population and not too many metropolitan areas. true, it’s a different day and age now, but let’s not act like terrorism just hit us when bush became president. we were aattcked in 93 at the wtc, 98 in the embassy bombings in kenya and tanzania and in 95 by domestic terroism in the ok city bombings. bill had to learn on the job as well. reagan didn’t have much foreign policy experience neither but met with gorbachev and helped end the cold war. nixon met with the chinese president in china back in the 70’s. those were both during volatile times and obama is certainly not doing anything different from what was done before. of course he know that it’s going to be difficult and not easy. lincoln was VERY inexperienced to be president at a time when have of the states succeeded from the union. fdr was VERY inexperienced when we were in the middle of the depression. jfk was also inexperienced when dealing with the soviets and racism. but these men had a vision to move the country foward by asking it’s citizens to sacrfice and to become involved. and they proved to be our best presidents.
and we can’t have it both ways. i’m sure hillary will reach out to obama should she become the nominee because we both know that it will be hard to get those swing votes. but because she represents the past, and not mention that dynasty thing coming into play, it wouldn’t be wise for him to choose her. and it would contradict his entire campaign.
oops, i meant “half of the states”
and the reason why her healthcare plan failed wasn’t because of the repubilcans, but more because of the fact that she kept the insurance/ drug companies at the table and excluded everyone else.
