A Graceful Departure Preferred

By Pamela Gentry, Senior Poltical Producer

Posted March 3, 2008 – In less than 24 hours folks in four states will head to the polls and most likely determine who will be the Democratic nominee.

While dueling television campaign ads heated up the airwaves this weekend in Texas and Ohio, some Democratic leaders have started to suggest to Sen. Hillary Clinton (N.Y.) that she should prepare a “bow out” strategy if she doesn’t land decisive wins Tuesday.

Gov. Bill Richardson (D- N.M.) is just one of several senior party officials wanting her to withdraw from the race is she can’t win big on Tuesday.  “I just think D-Day is Tuesday,” he said.  Richardson ended his campaign several months ago, but hasn’t endorsed either Clinton or Obama.

But Democratic Senators John Kerry (Mass.) and Dick Durbin (Ill.), both Obama supporters agree with Richardson.  They’ve suggested Clinton pull out if Tuesday’s race leaves her trailing Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) in pledged delegates.

In a recent polls of Texas voters by McClatchy Newspapers, MSNBC and the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, Obama was leading with 46 percent of the support of  likely voters to Clinton 45 percent.

The race is just as close in Ohio.  A survey by The Cleveland Plain Dealer conducted by the Mason-Dixon Polling and Research, Inc., finds Clinton leading with 47 percent to Obama’s 43 percent in the Buckeye state.   With the margin of error for both of these poll’s four to five percent, the races are too close to call.

Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D.C.) is heading to Ohio to campaign for Obama.  “Ohio has emerged again as the epicenter of a presidential campaign because of its importance to a Democratic victory in November and because of the notorious difficultly of [Democrats] carrying the state,” she said.

Hip hop mogul Russell Simmons, a New Yorker, is heading to Cleveland to campaign for Obama as well.  Over the weekend Simmons announced he was endorsing the Illinois senator.  In a statement, Simmons said, “Obama has built an unprecedented national movement of people from all ethnic, racial, political, social and economic backgrounds.”

Former President Bill Clinton told folks at a rally in Houston Sunday, “If somebody is here and they are undecided or you are trying to reach somebody who is undecided, here’s my best advice; Ask them to decide how they will judge the next president when the president’s term is over, not how you feel today at a rally,” he challenged.

Clinton supporters are confident she will pull out the wins needed to stay in the race.

i agree with the idea that if HILLARY cannot catch up in pledged delegates, she should consider bowing out. however, i think a picture that’s been painted by the media is that HILLARY is far behind in support.

she has not only raised $35 million dollars in february, but she has MILLIONS of supporters, and many pledged and super delegates. what does all this mean? it means that about half of the voting democratic electorate supports her. THAT’S HUGE.

but what does that mean? it means that if b.o. became the candidate, he would have A LOT of work to do in healing relations between he and many HILLARY supporters. i know that many, including myself, have said they will not vote for b.o. that’s it. just because he’s the nominee doesn’t suddenly mean that i think he’s prepared for office. i used to be all about party over politics, but, that’s changed for me.

I would like to commend Mrs.Clinton(if she wants to become my first lady, I would marry her)for even entering the Presidential race. Mrs. Clinton has been a formiable foe/or competitor for Mr.Obama and all of the Republican Candidates for President. I think that Mrs. Clinton should continue her campaign until she is satisfied that the people are content with Mr.Obama being the Democratic nominee/Candidate for Preident.

let the best man or woman win, it really doesn’t matter, as long as it is a democrat. but for all the non-believers and racist people, u know what you can do. as for obama and his clothing, there is no difference when other people has went to other countries and dressed in their clothing due to respect for it’s culture, take your data, i believe the clintons’ has done it before. thank you very much

Most of the negatives brought out on BO have come from the Obama camp in the hopes of people thinking the Clintons are behind it.
Some are fooled by these tactics but some still have the common sense to figure it out.
BOs plan is to fend off the LOuis F and Rezko and all other questionable dealings until the nomination is secured
So far he has done well in dodging the media and any questions that need to be asked
Should he be the nominee the democratic party will eventually have to deal with what they have created
When they go crying to the Clintons who could blame the Clintons if they told them to shove it
Without Hillary there for BO to play off BO will crash in his attempt to battle McCain
Reality wont be pretty for BO nor will it be for his supporters

  9. lilbaby26 on March 3rd, 2008

no betty, most of the negatives came out from the clinton camp and others in the democraic party. which is why after this race, i will not vote for another democrat in office. kris, it works both ways. but i can tell you right now that there are more of us that do not want to see hillary win.

Its funny you mentioned Russell campaigning in Cleveland. One of our guys over on Highbrid Nation did a post on Russell Simmons backing Barack Obama. Lol, he didn’t have very kind things to say about it. I’d have to agree with him too. Russell is one of the founding fathers of hip hop but he’s not really relevant to the crowd he tries to speak on behalf of.

If Hillary wins, she can’t say it was because she took the high road…because she didn’t. Voters are not going to be happy.

  12. toyatude on March 3rd, 2008

i would like to see both in office. as a black woman it would make history both ways. o believe either on eof them in office would do justice. after this president we have now anything but a republican will be good. my 8 year old could run this country after bush has messed it up sp bad. the only fear i have for obama if he gets in office. everything will be his fault as he tries to clean up bush’s mess. it will take the next 4 years to get back on track and the next 4 to keep it on track. he has great plans as well as clinton. both are well rounded people. i don’t think obama has played the race card i believe he was handed that when he decided to run. mccain has done nothing but talk about him making history just because of his race. change is the best thing that could happen to this country. hell bush has made so many enemies we need a fresh view on things.

  13. christy341 on March 3rd, 2008

Give me a Break!!! The media is not soft on Obama, the problem is that Obama does not have the insidious past that HRC has! He does not come with the baggage that HRC carries around with her! Yeah he may have his share of things he must account for but He does not have the dirty laundry that belongs to one HRC and if she ever STOLE this nomination then this guarantees a republican president. HRC has a named in a lawsuit regarding a 2000 fundraiser in where she and her campaign staff lied about money and broke campaign laws. Her campaign manager was indicted for this! She won’t release her tax returns because included in those returns are all the dirty tricks the Clintons have involved themselves in. Bill Clinton has put himself up to the highest bidder overseas and secured millions for his personal bank account counter to this country’s best interest.

Are you all kidding me? This MARRIED COUPLE are the most untrustworthy democrats and they make NIXON look tame. There are tapes of Bill Clinton advising Gennifer Flowers how to lie on the witness stand and avoid being questioned. Did you all know it was Clinton who tried to broker the deal last year that would allow DUBAI to purchase our PORTS and own yet another piece of AMERICA? Clinton was the broker behind a deal with Kazakhstan for uranium mines and he put his support behind the president of this country although the man is known for the unfair and inhumane treatment of the people of his country.

I could go on an on but let’s get REAL here…Clinton’s time has past and if we are stupid enough to elect another Clinton in the Whitehouse then don’t be surprised when the Sh*t hits the fan!

  14. ROY on March 3rd, 2008

Reality is Hillary will not win.As far as the young generation is concerned Obama is the ideal candidate for this new era.his ideas appeal to his delegates which is why numbers win words don’t.

  15. Judge & Jury on March 3rd, 2008

Hillary might as well bow out…and John U ..black ppl don’t have to play a race card….we live it everyday…it is what it is.

  16. Mike on March 3rd, 2008

Christy 341 Got it right on the media. News, much like history, favors the winners. That’s just the nature of the beast. To bring the attention upon herself is for political gain in the hopes of pulling another “New Hampshire” and be viewed as a victim. The fact is that if she was the one on top, they would have bashed Obama to an oblivion and/or minimized his candidacy in the media.

Betty, I’m not sure what exactly you’re talking about and I don’t think anyone else does either. To suggest that the Obama camp is bringing up their own dirt such as the Kenyan picture (Which the Clinton camp was pressed on and didn’t deny it’s distribution), or the muslim mailer smear (People in the Clinton camp were fired or resigned over that one.), the idea is just silly.

As to why I agree with Richardson. The extremely negative tone that Clinton has brought to the Democratic race at this point is hurting the character of the Democratic party overall. The Republicans have seen this (it’s one of the reasons they pulled back saying that use of Barack’s middle name in a negative light is off limits) and they are using it to portray their party as the “Good guys”. Do not be surprised to see some finger pointing later from the Republicans who will be saying that it is the Democrats who sling mud even against those in their own party. Any time we give the Republican party, is time they they will use to raise money, to gather the most intelligent and experienced people to their campaign to run against the Democratic candidate. They are also looking at this back and forth between Hillary and Obama to see what works against the candidates. Do you think that McCain is picking at Obama just because he thinks he is the nominee? No. It has alot to do with the fact that Obama doesn’t have much dirt to dig up so they are testing strategies against him and using Clinton for their own purposes, and they aren’t sure how to go about attacking him. Clinton is the candidate they know and they have boat loads to use against her. It is very important not to go to the convention divided. A candidate needs to be chosen. Don’t let the media spin that any other way because if they could have it their way they would let this go on forever. They want the ratings. Clinton just plain does not have the delegates and she isn’t going to get them even if she wins both states. Now if she does win both states I can at least see an argument say for the popular vote enough to maybe contest in PA..but we really don’t want it to go that far…and if she loses only one she should bow out and even if she doesn’t I think your going to see her Super Delegates jump ship.

    Republican Recipe for a win:
    1) Keep the Democratic party divided as long as possible. (More time to gain money, more time to gain support, more time to work a strategy.)

    2) Consolidate the Conservative Republicans under the McCain banner, possibly with a Conservative VP.

    3) Let the Democrats do the dirty work and bash each other so that by the time the general election comes along, they know exactly what works and what doesn’t. They also get to call the Democratic party’s character into question over the mudslinging.

    4) Focus on National Security and prepare a decisive plan on Iraq (McCain’s strengths) and gather the best Economic advisors in the business. (McCain’s weakness).

All of this political stuff is a game. It doesn’t matter who get’s in THEY HAVE TO PLAY THE GAME and who ever wins may or may not have more players than the other. But mostly the people want change, just change. If we the people, for the people by the people, we can make change, sticking together, black , white, red, whatever. Lets get on the same page people.

If Barack don’t get the Democrat nomination I will not vote for president in November. It’s that simple I am tired of picking the best out of the worst. I am not satisfied with John M or HRC ( and I have done my research she aint all that people make her out to be). I will do a write-in before I vote for Hillary or John.

  20. PJ on March 3rd, 2008

After all the DIRTY Tricks Hillary Clinton has done, the whining, the going off to Florida, after signing a pledge of boycott, the insincere, “I am honored to be sitting next to Barack Obama”, and then the Skitzo Out burst “Shame On You Barack Obama” the very next day…(which BTW the pamphlets were pretty much accurate, except for a misquoted word or two)….the “why do I always get the 1st question” “nobodies putting me in the media, why are they ignoring me” Hillary the whining card has been played, (remember the tear drop?) and it is played out, I have seen her deck, and it is apparent to me she is not operating on a full one…At one point I was ALL for her, and trying to convince others, But I have seen her to be a Deceptive, Mean, Low Down Dirty Trickster. She IS Not Worthy of my Vote…. If she ends up the Democratic Nominee, I WILL Not Vote at all.

And “Shame On You” John U for that lengthy whatever you were trying to prove posting…

Obama is being set up. Republicans are afraid of Hillary.tHEY WANT HER OUT OF THE WAY. They know the Clintons are just as dirty as they are. There game is to make Obama the Democratic nominee, and have McCain beat him in a landslide. It’s all part of a plan for another 4 years of Republican BS

  23. shirlin on March 3rd, 2008

The Clintons tout MRS Clinton’s readiness to be commander-in-chief from day one so that Bill Clinton can return to the WH, despite the Constitution’s forbidding another term for him. Hillary is a fearmonger and a proven warmonger, voting to place our nation in peril, leading to the deaths of thousands of American lives and to the economic ruin of our country. She voted for the war in Iraq solely so she can run for the most important office in our nation. Think of her using her tears, her sacarstic theatrics, her mean-spirited lies and smears as commander-in-chief and to push through a universal health care plan which she had miserably failed to do in 1992. Think of the Republicans’ ads showing Monica Lewinsky and Bill and cigars and more women coming out now with stories of his sexual assaults, etc, etc. Will the Clinton dynasty be electable? Do we citizens really want them back in the WH for an unconstitutional eight years? Is the Clinton machine going to continue to rule the Democratic Party, ushering in a generation of Republican ascendency and a new independent third party, and instructing the new voters under forty in cynicism and apathy? Turn the page, please, Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Save the nation, save the constitution, and save the party.

  24. just to say on March 3rd, 2008

if you really look at this race you wii see that
obama is always following her lead if she says something he then says something similiar wit exception to the war in iraq and for the record
we dont have time for on the job training this
country is in bad shape and we need the right
person to lead us back to respectability .i
like obama but not to enought to have him
in charge of our country now its to dangerous.

  25. Mike on March 3rd, 2008

Being that I haven’t seen most of these people blogging about Hillary and the fact that the blog lists all over are swarmed with pro Hillary bloggers trying to smear and down play Barack behind the scenes on the internet…and the fact that many of the words and tone is the same, makes me question the validity of some of the bloggers here. If you look at Craigslist Texas and Ohio it’s pretty prevelant…and sad and desperate to be honest.

  26. Joe Domingaux on March 3rd, 2008

The true issue is your intelligence. Will you let the media, the intellectuals, the so-called Black LEADERSHIP determine your souls? YOUR PLACE IN SOCIETY OR HISTORY? WILL YOU LET OTHERS DEFINE YOU OR QUESTION WHY YOU SHOULD FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOURSELVES AND MOVEMENT? When Lincoln was debating whether he would use a tactic of slavery abolishment on the Confederacy as a strategic economic weapon, many of those in the Union told him it was not the right time, that he was inexperienced to deal with such matters. Arent you glad they did? His predecessor Andrew Johnson would never passed any legislation on slavery, and in fact slowed down drastically the Reconstruction Movement.

Many such as Sheila Jackson Lee, Andrew Young, and others tout how much Martin Luther King meant to them. Not to say he didnt to us all. Yet, in actual terms, the NAACP, Roy Wilkins and a like often critized MLK heavily at the time for being misguided, too young (hes was under 40), not experienced, and premature for his time. SOund familiar?

Harry Belafonte basically financed most of King’s trips and frequent bails from jail, not all these so-called folks you hear leached on his legacy now.

Now we are with this election 2008, seems like the press, media, even many African American congressman, are turning on Obama…why you ask? Well you think about that. No need to answer the obvious. Being in Texas, never saw much experience “W” Bush had in being President, no joke intended. BUt he didnt. What about Bill CLinton. Arkansas Governor and Attorney General of Ark, NO US Legislative experiece. Hmmm you ask?

And what about Obama’s credibility question. Hillary and Whitewater, McDougal, and what about those foreign lobbyists, you know those who had known ties with the PLO. Yes the same ones that raised 250,000 for her 2008 campaign. Yet we ignore that.

We have to ask ourselves. Do WE WANT TO CONTROL OUR OWN FUTURES? NO one can control it for you folks. YOU HAVE TO FEEL YOU ARE WORTHY OF SOMETHING GOOD HAPPENING TO YOU. If not, we are wasting our time with this whole political debate. You have to feel that for once you cant live on King, all due respect Mr. King has been passed now for 40 years. They Old Movement has done good things and have had their Time. WHAT IS THIS GENERATION DOING for Their Place in History? You cant go back to singing kumbaya anymore. Your ancestors wouldnt approve. Now what will YOu DECIDE? Obama 08

  27. cmarie83 on March 4th, 2008

Hillary isn’t going anywhere. She most definitely should stick it out becaue the truth about Obama is coming out. Obama is a fraud and has lied to the public on numerous counts - his muslim heritage, his stance on nafta, his relationship with indicted slumlord tony rezko, his support of a church that promotes black supremacy. This is not a person who can unite the country. His candidacy is an insult to MLK’s great legacy.

  28. Mike on March 4th, 2008

    cmarie83,

We aren’t buying it. Hillary would have to win an insane amount of delegates between now and the convention. She has run such a negative campaign that the Superdelegates have openly spoken out about the damage to the Democratic party. You’re bringing up things that have already been dismissed in an attempt to play upon fears is flat out ignorant and an insult to peoples intelligence. I don’t hear you talking about Hillary’s Plaigairism or her refusal (As a supposed Champion of women’s rights) to give back $170k in campgain funds to a company with 100+ sexual harrassment suits, or that a large majority of her campaign material was stolen from past presidencies. But you won’t hear that from the Obama camp because that is not the kind of campaign they are running. The Kitchen sink strategy is old Republican style politics that Hillary is now using to smear her opponent.

  29. JAY on March 4th, 2008

MIKE not to mention her campaign said they will go negative to win. Actually the correct term is throw the kitchen sink. HILLARY campaign says they have to go negative to win and HILLARY supporters take negative words that come of HILLARYs mouth as the truth when her campaign says they are going negative. HILLARYs campaign didn’t say they were going to tell the truth about OBAMA. I am not smartest man in the world but when HILLARYs campaign says they plan on throwing the kitchen sink at someone that mean they are getting desperate. When people are desperate they do unimaginable things like split the DNC. Whatever it takes to win mentality kicks in. HILLARYs supporters speak of OBAMAs supporters as delusional followers. UNBELIVABLE. The so called champion of womans rights is same woman that refuses to denounce or reject money from a company that denounce and rejects a womans right to work in a environment that treats them as an equal, that doesn’t make woman feel uncomfortable in their work place.
