SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (Posted March 5, 2008) – Sen. Hillary Clinton bested her top rival Sen. Barack Obama with wins in three of the four state contests. The New York senator won in Rhode Island, Ohio and Texas. Obama’s only primary win was in Vermont.
How did she do it? Clinton was able to secure the White, Latino and senior citizen vote in Texas; in Ohio she won the working class folks concerned about jobs and the economy. Clinton needed a strong showing to stay viable; winning these two large states does just that.
Obama did well among African- American voters, young folks and the well educated. But he didn’t win over enough Latino voters in Texas or older voters in Ohio. Clinton bested him by getting more late deciders in both states.
Clinton told her supporters in Columbus, Ohio, “For everyone here in Ohio and across America who’s been ever been counted out but refused to be knocked out, for everyone who has stumbled but stood right back up, and for everyone who works hard and never gives up — this one is for you. You know what they say,” she said. “As Ohio goes, so goes the nation. Well, this nation’s coming back and so is this campaign.”
Obama congratulated Clinton on her victories, but played down her wins, saying they didn’t net her more delegates, and remains ahead in the race for pledged delegates. Obama decided to direct his remarks toward the future Republican challenger, Arizona Sen. John McCain. McCain secured enough delegates Tuesday to win the Republican nomination.
“Because John McCain may claim long history of straight talk and independent-thinking, and I respect that. But in this campaign, he’s fallen in line behind the very same policies that have ill-served America. He has seen where George Bush has taken our country, and he promises to keep us on the very same course,” Obama said.
Cherri McCormick, an African American from San Antonio, is a tax collector for the city and is still optimistic Obama can win the nomination. “It’s a pretty close race, but he’s got fresh ideas, he’s smart and intelligent,” she said.
Now the Obama campaign will have to re-tool and decide how t0 rebound from Tuesday night’s set backs. The Clinton camp turned up the heat on the freshman senator and it worked. That barrage of attacks may have been enough to influence those voters deciding in the last 48 hours.
African-American lawmaker, Rep. Al Green, (D-Tex) told me, “It’s not over yet, he [Obama] knew it would be close; but at the end of the day he’ll have the same delegate lead.” Green’s district near Houston delivered for Obama.
The Clinton camp feels the momentum turning their way. While Obama leads the delegate count with an estimated 1,451 delegates and Clinton has an estimated 1365, the nominees will need 2024 to secure the nomination.
One things for sure, the second “Super Tuesday” didn’t deliver an inevitable Democratic nominee.

well thats good, hope she wins in the election, but she won’t i know that.
It is not over yet. Obama can survive and win!
It is time for America to ask that Obama leave the race. It is clear that Hillary has won the most popular votes. She has won every Big state and Obama has not won one! If Florida and Michigan had counted Hillary would have this thing wrapped up!…..
I challenge all Hillary supporters to donate to her campaign this week. I am and I hope the rest of America does the same. We need a strong and intelligent President….VOTE FOR HILLARY! … GO HILLARY!!! ….. HILLARY 08!!!
i want to know why john edwards has not dropped out. and what we really need to focus on is who is stronger against mccain because this country cannot afford another republican in office. i don’t know if hillary can beat him. i’d be happy with hillary or barack just not a R.
I AM SO PROUD OF MRS CLINTON…BUT I GOTTA SUPPORT THE BLACK MAN…ITS TIME THAT WE SHOW THE WORLD WHAT WE CAN DO AND THAT WE R CPABLE OF AHNDLING “BIG JOBS”
Response to Hillary08
“You sound very stupid” Obama is leading, so why should he drop out, no matter what states he’s won..BIG or small is is still winning. And if obama name was on the ballot in Florida he would have won there also..You are the dumpest person leaving a comment. Get your facts straight.
GHM
Obama doesn’t have to leave any race anytime soon. I am sooo proud of this man and how far he has come in this race! He should continue to fight for the presidency and give Hillary a run for her money. The race isn’t over yet!
This presidential election is not over Hillary will not win..
I’m basing my election dicision on what the canidate Barack Obama is going to do for our country. I looked at CNN on last Thursday and a Hispanic women stated that the Hispanic community said that they was not supporting Barack because he was Black and that black people has never done any thing for them. I couldn’t believe what i was hearing so lets calculate something. 1. We have the right to vote why? because Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and those faithful black people who marched and fought for our equal rights is the reason why not just equality for just blacks but for all human kind. So going to the polls Hispanic community remember it was a black man along with black people why you was able to go out and vote. 2. Jobs 3.human rights. 4. We has opened our community to you. Your people rent from the black community and marry in our race to become citizens. It’s not what a president can do for you since that’s the reason your voting. It’s what the president can do for our country. So when you go to the polls remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the list goes on and on.
I will continue to support Barack Obama until the end, and i pray he will win the nomination for president.
Well, I hoped and prayed that Barack would win last night but I awoke to the sadden news, that he only won one of the four states. Two wins would have put Hillary out her misery but now we have to hit the remaining states hard if we are going to shake Hillary. I don’t know who Hillary ‘08 is but this isn’t a popularity contest anymore it’s about the right man or woman for the job besides Barack still leads in delegate votes. Now put that in your pipe and smoke it. Also I think that Florida and Michigan ought to made to do their elections over, just to make things right for a change. Go Obama!! Go Obama!! Go Obama!!
I did’t catch the poll questions asked of the Hispanic women. But, reading the comments by darlene, it is sad if they are even thinking that way. I can see why a candidate like Hillary is getting the votes she gets, it is from those who have not taken advantage in really educating themselves on the things that really matter from broader perspectives and not just an individual ambition.
I was disappointed, but I will get involved more heavily now that the focus is shifting to my home state of Pennsylvania. Barack, Pittsburgh got you, Philly got you…
