The War of Words Escalates

Senators Clinton and ObamaBy Pamela Gentry, Senior Political Producer

Posted March 24, 2008 – The Easter weekend allowed both Democratic candidates some down time, but there was no rest when it came to exchanging barbs and accusations about their rivals.

On Friday Bill Clinton said: “I think it would be a great thing if we had an election year where you had two people who loved this country and were devoted to the interest of this country. And people could actually ask themselves who is right on these issues, instead of all this other stuff that always seems to intrude itself on our politics.”

Clinton’s reference to “two people who loved this country” was an apparent allusion to his wife, New York Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton and Republican Arizona Sen. John McCain.   Many inferred that the former president was saying that Obama does not love his country.

An Obama supporter, retired Air Force Gen. Merrill McPeak, said the remark was reminiscent of McCarthysim, a comment that sent the Clinton campaign into a spin.

On Sunday, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who announced his endorsement for Obama on Friday, said he didn’t  believe the former president had accused Obama of being unpatriotic. “The campaign has gotten too negative – too many personal attacks, too much negativity that is not resounding with the public,” Richardson told Fox News Sunday.

Clinton supporter James Carville, obviously pissed, told The New York Times that Richardson’s endorsement of Obama was “an act of betrayal.”

“Mr. Richardson’s endorsement came right around the anniversary of the day when Judas sold out for 30 pieces of silver, so I think the timing is appropriate, if ironic,” Carville said.

The war of words is escalating. If it continues, the Dems might as well hand the election over to McCain, because alienated Democratic voters may stay home in November.

People are really tired of politics as usual. We want Change…We’ve had Clinton… We need someone who will speak for the people not Big Interest Groups with lots of money. We Need Change. Hillary acted like a politician and missed beating Bush during his second bid at the White House..She would have won hands down…Now she and her husband acts as though America owes this president seat to her..What the Hell…..This is politics as usual

WHATEVER REPO’S US DEMS WILL DEFINITELY BE HEARD IN NOVEMBER,ASK ME WHY? BECAUSE IT IS! TIME FOR A CHANGE,AND A PERSON THAT JUST WANT TO STAY IN ONE PLACE ALL OF THEIR LIVES ARE POOR AND PATHETIC AND NEEDS SOME REAJUSTMENT IN THEIR LIVES,ASK ME WHY? BECAUSE! TO STAY IN ONE PLACE GETS YOU, ME AND OTHERS NOWHERE,THINK ABOUT IT IF YOU WOULD HAVE JUST STAYED A CHILD AND NEVER GROWN UP THEN U WOULD STILL BE A BABY,SO ARE YOU A BABY OR DID YOU GROW UP? AND IF YOU ANSWERED YES TO THIS ? THEN YOU KNOW FOR YOURSELF THAT IT IS TIME FOR A CHANGE,PAUL SAID WHEN I WAS A CHILD I DID THE THINGS AA A CHILD,BUT WHEN I BECAME A MAN I PUT AWAY CHILDISH THINGS AND DID THE THINGS AS A MAN MR. OR MISS FELICIA AND TO ANYBODY ELSE WHO CAN STAND A CHANGE IN THEIR LIVES,THINK ABOUT IT.

  4. larry on March 24th, 2008

IS THEIR ANYBODY OUT THERE NEEDS A CHANGE IN THEIR LIVES? THEN IF YOU DO THEN WHO IS TRYING TO CHANGE AMERICA FOR WHAT IT STANDS FOR AND WHO HAS THE WORD CHANGE IN THE FOR FRONT EVERY SINGLE TIME ALMOST WHEN YOU SEE THEM AND IF YOU KNOW THE ANSWER TO THIS ? THEN WHY DO’T U VOTE THE RIGHT WAY, FOR THE LAND OF THE FREE AND JUSTICE FOR ALL AND FOR WHICH IT STANDS, JUST THINK ABOUT WHAT WE PLEDGED TO THE FLAG AND TO THE PUBLIC.

  5. James on March 24th, 2008

I believe that there is a need for change. We need change that will ring about POSITIVE results, not speeches that leaves us emotionally riled. I understand that this is history in the making, but we need to vote based on the facts, not emotion. Hillary is our best choice! Hillary 08

  6. LaChelle on March 24th, 2008

Its blacks like you James that keeps us back 20 years. I wish blacks like you would remove yourself from this earth. Yeah, I have a problem with black hillary supporters because you Uncle Tom’s wanna live in the past and not think of the future. It’s gonna be Obama or no one. Blacks wont sit quetly on this one.. A revolutions is brewing.

  7. IVY on March 24th, 2008

    GO OMBAMA!!!!

  8. Tom on March 24th, 2008

LaChelle, you make people very afraid I have lived through the burning of cities the riots. And just because someone black or white want to vote for Hillary that is there choice you sound like one of those blacks that hated Dr. King and though “he was moving to fast” let people vote for who they want to not who you want that reminds me of the time “if you black get back, if you brown stick around, if you white you all right” please loose and let those days go vote for who you want not what some one is threating riots which is also murder of innocent people.

I think its sad that we as African Americans cant come together and discuss our differences calmly. Although I may not support Obama, shouldn’t my voice be heard without fear of being shunned from my race? I believe there’s a bigger need for change within the African American community that needs to be addressed first.

  10. Roberta on March 24th, 2008

Tom & James, I totally agree with you. I support Hillary but it’s not because I don’t like Obama, I just think she’s the best choice and I refuse to be hated on because of that. To all those who want to holla “Uncle Tom” and other hurtful words to describe blacks who support whites, I say stop the meaningless hateful messages you send and wake up. Obama’s camp is no better than Hillary’s camp. If Obama gets the nomination, good for him, but if he doesn’t I seriously doubt if all hell will break loose. We must act like we have good sense and not like hoodrats.

  11. Quenton on March 24th, 2008

I can’t believe Im seeing this!!! When will we open our eyes and see the history that is in the making here! I cant believe the amount of hate I see from you people against Obama. He is our one true hope, and you black TRAITORS can’t stop it!

  12. PIa on March 24th, 2008

That is why slavery was so succesfull. It has kept our minds trapped for all of these years this is not about black or white is called getting behind and supporting one of your on for once. we don’t shop in our areas we don’t support our own bussiness we havw become a disorted group. Other groups of people help others after they help there own. We will always be behind we simply can’t help it.

I’m so sick and tired of having to defend my blackness just because of who I support! I am an active member in my local NAACP chapter for over 8 years now, and I support Hillary Clinton. Does this make me less black? Am I a traitor although I work hard to improve the black community? We need to re evaluate ourselves.

  16. Janet on March 24th, 2008

Hillary supporters please be aware of who you are voting for. Bill Clinton her husband eliminated welfare for the poor, mostly white .
He sent all the jobs overseas Nafta. If you think she is going to be a Angel of mercy you are mistaken. This a woman who has her own agenda and destroying anyone in her path. Which happen to be Obama. Your major news stations have caught her in various lies.Who do you think started this race issue she did. Please rethink your vote.

IN MY OPINION I VIEW THE TIMES WE LIVE IN AS A CONTINUATION OF THE AMERICAN STRUGGLE FOR CHANGE AND EQUALITY FOR ALL. THE BEST CANIDATE I STRONGLY FEEL FOR THAT TO HAPPEN IS MR. OBAMA. THE CLINTONS WITH HAVE HAD THERE CHANCE TO EFFECT THAT. NOW THE SEEDS OF THE 60′S MOVEMENT ARE BLOOMING IN SPRING AND WE MUST GO FORWARD. ALL THOSE ATTACTS ON MR. OBAMA ARE HAPPENNING BECAUSE OTHERS HAVE NO PLAN TO ADVANCE US AS A NATION TOGETHER JUST AS THERE WAS NO PLAN TO ADVANCE AMERICA IN THE 60′S. THE TRAIL WAS BLAZED AND THEN CAN THE ADVANCEMENT OF THE PEOPLE. HISTORY IN A SENSE IS REPEATING IT SELF. 2008 OBAMA WILL ADVANCE US AMERICANS FORWARD IN A WAY THAT NO OTHER CAN LEAD US AT THIS TIME!

  18. friskee1 on March 25th, 2008

too all the hillary supporters, i want to ask u something.. when the rev wright debacle went down, where were the clintons on this issue??? how come they weren’t DEFENDING

  19. friskee1 on March 25th, 2008

to all of the hillary supporters, i want to ask u something. when the rev wright debacle went down, how come the clintons didn’t come out and defend the guy? let alone the black church?? you’d think that they would be the main people to come out and defend the message being relayed from the pulpit to america who has it’s eye on not just obama, but black churches in general. but of course they wouldn’t because they use blacks like the democratic pary uses blacks. sumthin 2 think about

  20. BigDru on March 25th, 2008

Go Obama- I’m Supporting you to The fullest.

  21. DaBest on March 25th, 2008

It is time for us as a people to come together and be apart of history. Now is the time that we as a people open our eyes so that we can see when we are being used by the other race. Oh yes they will use us for their gain in such a time like this.Let this be said once Obama is the chosen democratic dont be stunned if you see the other race turn their backs on democratics and the party
and vote for McCaine. Anything to keep a black man out the white house. Stand for CHANGE

  22. Hurst on March 25th, 2008

Obama jus isn’t the best choice of the two candidates bcuz he’s an African American He’s the best choice bcuz for one, it’s jus time for a change, if anybody keeps up wit politics they would see that he’s very specific on a lot of issues, to all you African American Clinton supports the Republicans want you to vote for her bcuz she has no chance of beating Mcain in November but he hasn’t a chance against Obama IT’S TIME FOR A CHANGE AMERICA

  23. Trey on March 25th, 2008

A Change… Its time for a change… CAN ANY OBAMA SUPPORT MENTION PLEASE ” A CHANGE OF WHAT”?? What good is the “change” if you dont know what it is or where you are headed. Just like his speeches, a lot of the reasons Obama Supports are giving on this Blog has NO SUBSTANCE! What ARE his plans? Can any one name a SPECIFIC PLAN that he has given and please lay out the details? Just one! What type of CHANGE does want to leave America in? Or does it not matter as long as its not Hillary leading this so called “change”. We say we’re not putting race into this Election, but everything that screams out from Obama supports has racial undertones.. Just look at your reasons.. Vote Obama for Change, then let’s slam on Hillary to prove our point..

  24. Yolanda Tubbs on March 25th, 2008

I been scared to say anything, but I agree with Trey. Obama supporters always mention change, but Obama hasnt really laid out what that change will be. His speeches are good, but speeches wont clear up the economy, ease immigration, or state plans to stop the war. We need real solutions and right now, Hillary gives that.

  25. Dave on March 25th, 2008

This ones for all that are disillisioned by The Bushe and the Clintons. Barack is the best person for this job , please people don’t be fooled by Hillarys fascade of real care ,she does not care about really helping the poor, she is more concern about makin history, I did not say this, she did in one of her speeches she stated that ” I’d make history” not that We’d make history, It is about being the first woman and winning with her, Additionally, Barack is the most honest Man we are going to get, we better recognize it or it is going to be another sad 4 Years. This is a Selfish motivated woman and most of the Delegates see this also. Thats why they are choosing Barack Obama! Good Day!!!!!!!

  26. Mike H. on March 25th, 2008

I have only one thing to say about the Clintons, you are either with them or against them. There is no middle ground. Bill Clinton’s attempted to question Obama’s patriotism makes me sick as a retired Army officer. A man who dodged the draft during the Vietnam War is going to question someone’s patriotism. Get real.

  27. jfffnn on March 25th, 2008

I live in Pennsylvannia and wil be voting for Obama in the primary on april 22. however if gor some strange reason Hillary gets the nomination I will vote for her in November. The choice is a democrat or John (100 more years of war) McCain.
There is nothing wrong with supporting Hillary if she wins the nomination. At this time I don’t see how because the numbers ain’t there and she comes across as desperate. The latest from her is that she landed in Bonia under sniper fire, when in fact shegot off the plane ansd started shaking hands,oh well thats desperation.

  28. Grant B. on March 25th, 2008

I live in Philadelphia, and I am awaiting this primary. There’s been a lot of talk here, and some of it pretty tense. I look at the comments on this board and I’m puzzled. Obama supporters want you to vote Obama simply because they hate Hillary, while Hillary supporters want you to vote on the facts.. Dislike vs. proof.. The choice is looking easier to me.

  29. Stephanie on March 25th, 2008

Obama people.. Why do ya’ll seem so tense with your answers? If this is truly the right man, then why this frustration in trying to sell him? Why attack the few people that are supporting Hillary on this board? Why are your messages filled with attacks, rather than evidence? Is it because people are starting to see another side of Obama and now ya”ll feel the heat? Hillari ‘08!!

  30. Janet on March 25th, 2008

The change Obama is talking about is the way things are done in Washington, Not the same old promises that are never kept. He is talking about fairness for everyone. It does not take a Rocket Scientist to figure out what change is talking about.I realize some people can’t see the hole until they have fell in it.

  31. Grant on March 26th, 2008

Honestly Janet, and this one man alone can change the entire face of Washington by his presence? He alone can change the way Washington does politics? He alone can persuade corporate America to stop its corruon and lead us on a pathway to success? I think the hole that has been dug is the one in which black have placed all their hopes into empty ideals and bashes anyone who doesnt partake in it. Sad., just sad.

  32. Grant on March 26th, 2008

i misspelled one word.. I meant to say corruption in that one sentence.

  33. friskee1 on March 26th, 2008

why are his ideals empty?? and please take time to find out what he’s about before you judge. we live in the information age, and you still don’t know where the canidates stand.

  34. Hunter on March 27th, 2008

friskee1 baby, I registered on both Obama’s & Clinton’s websites so I could see where they stand on the issues. If you take a look, they actually favor each other in a lot of ways (too must for me to copy and paste on here). However Obama’s career RECORD shows a little more emptyness then Clinton’s. So it only leaves to reason why we would back someone with no major change in ideals?? Becuase He’s Black, or a Man, or is it out of pure Hatred for the Clinton’s?? When you think about it, its can really be only one or a combination of those three!

  35. Marsha on March 27th, 2008

As much as I hate to say it, Hunter is right! I am an Obama supporter and I’ve been looking at both candidates, and at first, I really didnt know much about Obama. I just liked the fact he was African American and he represented a change for the future, thats why I voted for him. As must as we don’t want to say, the majority of us has either learned or forced ourselves to hate the Clinton’s so much that we tried to justify a way to discredit her. I love what the Clintons did for us in the 90’s, but that time is gone. I voted for Barack Obama becuase he’s a man, he’s not a Clinton, and yes.. becuase He will make history as the first Black President. Let’s get over it, it is what it is!

  36. Deitre on March 27th, 2008

Marsha I’m glad you can admit it because most of these people seem to be in deep denial.

  37. Daniel on March 28th, 2008

thanks Marsha, you just summed it up for all the Obama supporters. We know the same reasons you voted for Obama are the same reasons they did too. And thats gonna help move Hillary right on in the White House. Africans Americans doesnt really care about any issues UNLESS its a black man heading it. We have proved we are just as ignorant and racist as white people! Hillary 08!!

  38. ann on April 7th, 2008

BUZZ WORDS, BUZZ WORDS THAT’S ALL THIS WAS AND IS.ALL THE GOOD OLD BOYS USE THEM, ALL THE GOOD OLD BOY’S ARE INCLUDED!!! JUST LET YOUR VOTE SPEAK FOR YOU, IT WILL SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS…GOD BLESS, BUT FOR HIM TO DO THAT HE MUST CLEAN IT UP FIRST. GOD IS STILL IN CONTROL!!!
