Today’s Pa. Primary Could Determine the Nominee

By Pamela Gentry, Senior Political Producer

PHILADELPHIA  (Posted April 22, 2008) – Whether today’s Pennsylvania primary  is a close shave or a landslide, there’s one thing for sure: It will be a milestone in one of the longest primary races in the history of the Democratic nominating process.

Not many people are really expecting Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) to defeat Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) – who has Pennsylvania roots (along with ties to Illinois, Arkansas and New York)  – but everyone is waiting to see if Clinton will be able to wallop her rival by taking more than 10 percent of the vote. Such a decisive victory – even though Clinton was up 20 to 30 percentage points not that long ago – makes it difficult to argue that she should surrender the fight. Her campaign would get a much-needed jolt at a time when it’s broke and lacks a clear plan for beating Obama, who has won more states, more delegates and more popular votes.

Sen. Barack Obama campaigning in the Keystone State.

In downtown Philadelphia Monday, I passed Clinton and Obama supporters chanting on street corners and waving campaign signs for their presidential pick.

Two Clinton supporters, Trint Hagler, 27, from Dallas and Phyllis Beard, 37, from New York, traveled here to help get the vote out for today’s primary.  “She has real solutions for real problems,” Hagler said.

But in our unofficial survey of 10 random folks on the street, none of the Clinton supporters was from Philadelphia. Of the 10 people BET interviewed, four were Clinton supporters and six were for Obama.  But four Clinton supporters were from out of state and won’t be able to cast a vote in the Pennsylvania primary today.

Obama is expected to get the votes of most of the African Americans in this town, where Blacks make up 45 percent of the city’s population.  But the African-American mayor, Michael Nutter isn’t one of them.

Nutter told BET why he’s supporting Clinton. “When you look at Sen. Clinton’s record, when you look at her experience, when you understand all that she’s accomplished, it became clear to me that Sen. Clinton is the best candidate,” he said.

Ethan Fraser, a 19-year-old freshman political science major at Penn State University, doesn’t agree with Nutter.   “Obama is inspiring, and he inspires me – that one day I can be [running for president] in the same position,” he said.

Clinton is planning a victory rally in Philadelphia tonight, and Obama is heading to Indiana, where polls have the two candidates in a dead heat.

Here we go again, another Super Tuesday.
    What will be, will be.
I still feel that whoever is responsible for covering the election for the BET website is clearly a Clinton supporter and that’s fine everyone have their candidate of choice however; the picture on the BET homepage, of Clinton and Obama which shows Clinton as victorious and Obama as sorrowful is an upset to me. I feel the coverage should be more balance and impartial for both candidates. Obama 08!!!

Obama all the way.I am very upset with the CEO of BET that tried so hard to destroy OBAMA. As a black man knowing how hard it is for us still you have someone like the CEO to do the dirty job for Hillary. If you are supporting OBAma, jou should simply say my vote is going to Clinton. You did not have to put the man down. GO Obama..

It is early still….as far as I’m concerned, it too soon who claims victory until when the polls close at whatever time it closes. I do certainly hope that Barack Obama comes out WAY ON TOP!!! I have faith that this will be the outcome!! KEEP DOING YOUR THING, OBAMA!! The time has come for a change & Obama is THE CHANGE WE NEED!!

I really support Hillary because she has the right idea about making the United States a more reluctant place to live. Now Obama on the other hand I really think that he doesn’t know what he is doing and why would you vote for someone that doesn’t say under GOD in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Well “Hillary all the Way” you can vote rep. all you want. There will be more war, more dead soldiers for reasons that are still not clear, more homeless, jobless, non-insured americans ever. It sounds to me you’d rather have the country destroyed than to vote for Obama…You sound like an idiot. I am an Obama supporter, simply because he has the right ideas for american people. This country is being destroyed by the rep. who care nothing about us, only the rich and well off but if Hillary did pull it off to become the pres. candidate I would still vote for her. “Hillary all the Way” is a straight ignorant hater…Yeah, I said it!

  19. Ms Ben on April 22nd, 2008

I’m praying that the LORD will give Obama the victory in PA! With 130,000 new registered voters in PA, and they all vote (because a majorty of them are for him). Obama just might pull off an upset.

  20. darlene on April 22nd, 2008

I’m a Christian and i don’t quote the pledge of Allegiance either, why should i salute to a flag that is idol worshiping. Here it is people is making all kinds of statements against God. They have taken prayer out of the school and the very people who is in the white house is pledging to the flag. But look at our nation i think you have it back wards Boss. Let me say the pledge and i need a amen or a ouch. I pledge allegiance to the flag for the united states of america, and to it’s republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisble with liberty and justice for all. (I pledge allegiance to the flag)sounds like idol worshiping to me and lets not mention they are working on taking God out. But they didn’t say i pledge allegiance to the Lord for the united states of america. America get it together.

  21. jfffnn on April 22nd, 2008

I live in Pittsburgh and the voting is heavy.Obama may get a sizable vote here in the westen part of the state. If that happens along with getting the most votes in the Philadelphia,Erie and Scranton along with smaller cities like Harrisburg and York he may win.In any event If Hillary does not win by ten percentage points or better she may have too withdraw from the race. A poor showing on her part could derail her campaign financialy.

  22. Tene on April 22nd, 2008

That is your opinion! You call me an idiot and a ignorant hater..because I have a different view than you do? That is why we have an election! WE are all created in Gods image!!Wow! Grow up… narrow minded SOUL!

  24. Lady T on April 22nd, 2008

Hillary all the way you have much nerve to call someone narrow minded! You can either claim narrow-mindedness or prejudice against blacks for your comment! To do anything to either keep a black man out of the white house is what your views state, so you are ignorant!

  25. Boo Boo on April 22nd, 2008

I mean eventhough i want Obama to win myself. But if Hillary wins then that means everyone who is claiming to be dem. then we should all unite and vote for her. But i agree with some of the things people are saying. Hillary really doesnt know some of the things she is talking about. I mean throughout her whole campaign she was talking about how Obama did this, and he said that. I mean they both are good Candidates but i think Obama is better because he addresses different issue that many people wont talk about. So i say OBAMA ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!

  26. Brenda on April 22nd, 2008

I believe in God and that his plan has already been laid out. Regardless of who wins tonight the democratic party needs to decide who should drop out of the race so the real campaigning can begin. We say one nation under God but in reality we are divided. We all should be striving for the same things, a clean environment, jobs, health insurance, etc. We should not be ripping each other apart and I must say Barak has not tore into Hillary as much as she has into him. We don’t need someone to get defensive when there back is against the wall. We need someone that will be able to lead and take charge without trying to bring other people down that are suppose to be in race fighting for the same things. I honestly would have liked to have seen Obama and Hillary both in office but unfortunately I do not foresee that happening. Oh well, this is just my opinion and only the Lord knows what is in store. I just hope it is better than the road we are on now.

If Obama win in Pa.by the margin the polls predict it is still a victory for him Hillary is already having financial problems and she will have more of a problem afterwards because her funding will start to shrink. And for anyone to say they would prefer to have another republican in office I don’t think they are realizing what they are doing, unless they in the beginning were a republican.Who wants more of the same Bush run government. One that cares less about what the people want but what he thinks should be and to keep this war going for another one hundred years this is why we are in an economic decline we are financing this war with money from loans of other countries. Our troops are coming home and can’t get the help they need we have sons and daughters that have been back and forth on tours two and three times, look at the housing market and the job losses,no we don’t need another Bush what we need is Change. Not more of the same politics in the White House.I know that Obama is that person to bring cahnge about.

Hi, I’m Rachel and I am a 20-year old black female attending USC Columbia. I’ve always been a supporter of Bill Clinton so of course when his wife entered the race I have been a Clinton supporter all the way.. Until recently I realized that all us “democrats” are fighting back and forth. Its fine to have one that u like more than the other (Obama or Clinton) but saying that if the one u are going for isnt nominated that you’re gonna vote republican, thats just stupid and ignorant… without realizing, you’re gonna give the republicans the power again, and here we go again back to Iraq with McCain… We Democrats need to stick together.. no matter which democrat wins the primary, we all need to stick together and vote for him/her (no write in votes or no switchovers to republican) come on democrats.. WE CAN DO IT! This real change that Obama is talking about is unity… and we need a Democrat in order for that to happen!

OBAMA!IS the best thing that we as black people of america can pray upon. I am a educated,entrepeneur,24 yr. old young black woman that have come to notice, throughout the years nothing has really been accomplished with the lastor may I say any presidents of republican. Droughts in america, starvation, poverty, and still slavery. I beleive in my heart obama is being slantered amongst old raciest white people, blacks that have no voice of there own.I personally, feel as though black men have been to hell and back sense slavery. And all I can ponder on is no other wants to see a black person with world power. As the bible say “THE TIME IS HERE”. AND I FEEL AS THOUGH “OUR TIME IS HERE”. You can steal, you can kill, and you can cheat, but nothing great will come out of it. And as I end my note of inspiration to those that respond and have no voice at all, remember to vote or die. vote for the person you feel is best, or die with everyone that has under Bush leading for nothing but greed, and power. And if your thinking about Mccain being president it will get no better.Hes still living in world war 2. How many lives will we put on the line, or how many lives can we save from this democracy.Obama is my hero. Obama is a man of color and change. Some are scared of change.Change from your every day beautiful lives, with white picket fence, and there so called struggle for what they have worked hard to get. BUT DO YOU REALLY NO WHAT STRUGGLE MEANS.Or even hard work. A hard worker is someone that gets up every day from dust til dawn, on some ones job that cares two red cents if you eat, starve or brake a leg on there job, just to provide for your family.Like my friend Oprah said”BARACKKKAAA ABAMA

I’m sorry lady but Hillary can not and will never accomplish half of what he has in a short time. For the first time we have whites and blacks looking to the future together! There has been no other pres candidate to accomplish that. A fake can not pull the wool over millions. You do not have to believe him, you are only one of few. Being black has put him under a microscope. That man can’t snore loud or you will shun him quick! LOL….. Bush was the worst and yet you are ready to put another rep in the white house, why because he’s not the right color?

The difference between Obama and Clinton has become clearer by the day. Obama has always been about change, and not money. Clinton has always been about the money, and not change.
Obama is genuine, Clinton makes things up. Obama says “our country”, Clinton says “my country.” Obama takes the high road, Clinton takes the low road…all too frequently. There is a reason why college educated voters are voting heavily in Obama’s favor~ they are smarter!
Obama is willing to talk with the enemy, Clinton is willing to become your enemy. Trustworthiness and respect are overlooked qualities in our leaders. Obama demostrates both, Clinton demonstrates neither.
Bush got voted in twice, so I’m not surprised we have plenty of foolish people who would vote for Hillary for all the wrong reasons! Obama-nation!
