Posted April 29, 2008 – One thing’s for sure: Daily opinion polls aren’t helping Democrats make up their minds about who should be their nominee. But the Republican Party is ready to unite against Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) if she becomes the Democratic choice for president. Her nomination is just what Republicans need to get conservatives to rally for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).
It’s no secret that Republican voters are less likely to cross party lines to support a Democrat for president, but it’s a certainty they won’t if that Democratic is Clinton.
In an Associated Press-Ipsos poll released on Tuesday Clinton gained some ground on her Democratic rival, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill). When matched against McCain, Clinton leads McCain 50 percent to 41 percent, while Obama and McCain were locked in a virtual tied, Obama 44 percent to McCain’s 46 percent. (The margin of error is 3.1 percent.)
But there is a larger margin of error when looking at another reality: how much some Republicans dislike the New York senator.
McCain has been running unchallenged for the most part, while the Democrats slug it out for the nomination. But he’s been working hard on swaying those conservative Republican’s, who haven’t jumped on board with his candidacy.
McCain has enjoyed a holiday of sorts since becoming the presumptive Republican nominee, but I’ve heard McCain knows it’s not smooth sailing when polls continue to show him trailing or tied with both Democratic challengers.
So what’s he doing about it? McCain is tending to mending fences inside his party. He’s been holding meetings with conservative members of Congress, working on building a coalition of right-wing activists and sharing his stance on “hot-button” issues, such as abortion, immigration and tax cuts.
He’s even courting African-American voters by touring places other Republican candidates haven’t. He visited a poor Black community in Alabama, a coal town in Kentucky and went to New Orleans and denounced the federal government’s 2005 response to Hurricane Katrina.
McCain is often quick to pile on the negatives about Obama because his camp believes McCain would defeat Clinton since Republicans would be motivated to go to the polls and rally behind McCain.
Obama, who leads in pledged delegates and the popular vote, has been training some of his comments on the campaign trail toward McCain, rather than Clinton. On Tuesday he criticized his gas-tax holiday proposal. “He had the gall yesterday to tell me that obviously because I didn’t agree with his plan I must not be sympathetic to poor people,” Obama said.
It looks like McCain will have to wait until the end of the Democratic primary before he’ll know for sure who he will be running against.

Rev. Wright could have waited, but you know our people when that camera time comes around. Someday we will get it together. HELP ELECT OBAMA
wats up
umm lets see. If the old man get elected, he will be to sleepy to walk the street of the slums to look for a change. Therefore, no change will come. If Hillary gets elected, would we see a change in our life style. Think about it. We will continue with our daily lives. Besides who is going to run it. Mr clinton or ms Clinton. At lease if Obama gets elected we now know that America is under going that change that needed. Its a start that will have many seeds. And America needs to be reborn.
One Love!!!!!!!!
Black people, Black people, Black people, when will we wake up from our stupor. We treat each other bad and demand that others respect us. We talk about the racist polices of white America, yet we don’t support the Black candidate that’s running for office. Hillary has no problem telling women to vote for her because she is a woman; she has no problem pulling using racist tactics to sabotage Senator Obama’s campaign. And yet we still in this day and age have the Black cronies, and Uncle Tom’s (the updated 2008 version) who let themselves be used by her and her campaign to undermine a black man. I can hear the uncle Tom’s reporting back to her now say “I’s did it missy. He aint got no right runnin gainst you…he nedda stay in his place”. So sad, no wonder we don’t get respect.
in response to jfffnn..im black, am i proud to be black? Of course not, because the fact is yes blacks have done alot for this country but what else have they done in the past 10yrs. Al Sharpton and all of the other sad leaders whom yall look up to hasnt done anything either. I have an daughter whom is 7yrs old, I have to think about her future she goes to an predominitely white school while she is learning an 2nd language. I dont like her around certain balcks because they are uneducated and ghetto. So, Why would i want her to live in an country ruled by an black male?
UNBELIEVABLE….While I know Rev Wright has the right to speak and did so…..I feel it’s time for him to SHUT UP!!!!
Its said that all this stuff coming up against Obama, but that was the plan of the white man all along! Can we as a society ever make change in the political arena?
Sunnyday….What are you talking about? Over 90% of African-Americans are already voting for Barack. African-Americans are about 14% of the population so if even if every black person did vote he still wouldn’t win the seat. You are an idiot.
Mekitadavis YOU LIKE YOU LOST YOUR FAITH IN BLACK PEOPLE! I GUESS THATS THE SIGN OF AS TRUE BLACK REPUBLICAN !!!!! IF YOU REALLY CARED ABOUT YOUR DAUGHTER YOU WOULD NOT HAVE PUT DOWN YOUR OWN BLACK PEOPLE! AND IF YOU REALLY CARED ABOUT YOUR DAUGHTER’S FUTURE THEN NO MATTER WHOS THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE, YOU WOULDNT SWITCH SIDES TO MCCIAN! BECAUSE IF YOU DID YOUR RESEARCH ON MCCAIN POLICES YOU WOULD KNOW THAT HIS HEALTH CARE POLICES ARE SIMILAR TO BUSH’S HEALTH SYSTEM! NOW DO YOU REALLY WANT THAT FOR YOUR DAUGTHER? SECOND BUSH IS A WHITE MAN AND HE SCREWED THIS COUNTRY UP! HE WASNT BLACK !!!!!
PEACE
MEKITADVAIS YOU ARE UNBELIEVEABLE! THERE ARE MANY EDUCATED BLACKS WHO COULD RUN OR COUNTRY SUCCESSFUL, NOT ALL OF US OUR UNEDUCATED AND GHETTO! What you say is so dishearting because you are black but you hold racist views! COME ON!
To everyone that is reading this!
It’s not about your gender or color; is about what’s best for your country. Instead of thinking about Obama or Hillary, think about what’s best for all.
BLACK PEOPLE THAT PUTS DOWN ITS OWN PEOPLE MAKE ME SICK !!!!!
BUSH IS WHITE AND HE SCREWED THIS COUNTRY UP MORE THEN ANY BLACK MAN COULD! AND IF MCCIAN WAS PRESIDENT I WONDER HOW MUCH WORSE HE COULD BE? SO I GET PISSED OFF WHEN BLACK PEOPLE WHOS SCARED OF THEIR OWN RACE TALKS DOWN ON THEIR PEOPLE !!!!!
PEACE
Mekitadavis, Been educated is different than been Ignorant!!! Which is what you are.
I would like 2 respond 2 ‘Proud to be Black’ I am a white man and my views are mine and just as you I speak my mind with no shame. I simply do not understand why whites owe blacks an apology. What do I have to do with the actions of a bunch of fools from the past? I get sick of being made to feel guily for others sins. Using the past as a crutch as you seem 2 be doing will get us no where toward a truly united america. I hope we never forget the ugly past this country was built on, so it will never happen again. But to hold present day whites hostage to this past makes no sense to me. If your great grandfather robbed a bank over a 100 years ago would you feel like you needed to return to that bank a say you sorry to the current tellers of that bank?
And on your statement that blacks invented almost everything we use today? While I will agree that black inventers don’t recive the credit they are owed for the many thigs that help save live and make life easier for all amircans. To make the statement that blacks invented almost everthing is just an historical misstatement on your behalf.
I do think the sooner we are honest with each other the sooner we can come together. Most whites are scared to speak their mind for fear that what they say will be recived as racist.
BECAUSE THEY KNOW SHE’LL BE BEAT!! SHE AND HER HUSBAND HAVE A LONG LAUNDRY LIST OF PEOPLE WHO THEY EITHER HAD BUSINESS DEALINGS WITH OR WHO WORKED FOR THEM AND THEIR ALL 6 FEET UNDER NOW! NEVER HEAR THE MEDIA MENTION ANY OF THAT! THIS WOMAN ISN’T FIT TO RUN ANYTHING LET ALONE A COUNTRY.
Until we all get back to the basics of being human beings, stop being so greedy, egotistical and just plain mean none of us will ever get anywhere in life. From my reading and personal insight I believe Obama could do a lot for this country because he is not politics as usual. If he were to win be certain he would have to fight for everything because the good ole boys in DC do not want to take direction or work for a black man and that is for sure. Given the chance I do believe he could make some constructive changes and bring this country closer together than it has been in a long time. We also might find some room to breathe from all the high prices of everything. I am on disability and need some relief.
we just need to pray
my response to some of these replies are WOW!!!!!
WOW!!!!! to some of these response ,this is the reason we need some change in our life everythings is still black and white can we just vote for the person that we know would make a change not because this person is white or black but this candidate would do postive things to make all of our lives better(change is what i want change and a peace of mine please
