Wright’s Wrong Move

Posted April 30, 2008 – Sen. Barack Obama did everything he could to distance himself from his former pastor, respectfully, but the Rev. Jeremiah Wright went too far in his latest public appearances. Wright’s antics have angered Obama, forcing him to denounce, disown and break ties with the flamboyant and arrogant pastor.
And, yes, I said “arrogant.”
After Obama witnessed what he called “rants” by the former pastor of the Trinity United Church in Chicago that were “not grounded in truth,” he realized it was time speak out.
“The person I saw yesterday was not the person that I met 20 years ago,” Obama said. Wright made it easy for Obama to rebuff him, and it may lead to the Illinois senator leaving the church altogether.
Wright, so caught up in his 15 minutes of fame, somehow thought he should take a national platform – not once, not twice but three times – to defend his name and his views on America, even if it meant jeopardizing Obama’s candidacy.
Wright’s spectacle at the press club furthered negative stereotypes and re-enforced the fears of an “angry Black man” held by many Whites. If this latest episode derails Obama’s bid for the White House, Wright might find that Black folks are his greatest critics.
“When I say I find these comments appalling, I mean it,” Obama told reporters at a news conference Tuesday. “It contradicts everything that I’m about and who I am. And anybody who has worked with me, who knows my life, who has read my books, who has seen what this campaign is about, I think will understand that it is completely opposed to what I stand for and where I want to take this country.”
The airwaves will be filled with Wright’s comments now throughout the rest of the primary season. The constant chatter about the ordeal will make it more difficult for Obama to stay on message, and the news media will pass on discussing gas prices to follow the circus appeal of Wright.
Obama, obviously agitated by Wright’s allegations, said, “But he states, and then amplifies, such ridiculous propositions as the U.S. Government somehow being involved in AIDS; when he suggest that Minister [Louise] Farrakahan somehow represents one of the greatest voices of the 20th and 21st century; when he equates the United States’ wartime efforts with terrorism, then there are no excuses,”Obama said.
Wright’s statements combined with his attacks on White America were obviously riveting for the Illinois senator. “I have spent my entire life trying to bridge the gap between different kinds of people,” Obama said.
“His comments were not only divisive and destructive, but I believe that they end up giving comfort to those who prey on hate,” Obama told reporters on the campaign trial in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Of course, the big question is what impact this will have on his campaign. We’ll have to wait for the next contest to get the answer.
When Rev. Wright first came in the news and was being targeted by Whites, the Black Community came to his side. Now he defends himself and Obama disses him, Blacks are ready to burn this man at the stake. Our hypocrisy will cost us the election. Our chickens are coming home to roost. (ya’ll get mad if ya want too, we know what we say behind closed doors)

I think this is so sad! Some of these so call christians is why the church is so broken. I know God is not pleased. We are a nation of people who most of us have come through long suffering. There is a big difference between ignorance and ignoring we’ve had to do both. If there ever was a time for us to show that we truly love who we are and accept each other whole heartedly it is now. I agree with Donna. What is sad is how many black people on this page are defending Wright and calling Obama “white” or suggesting that. This just says that we as black folks do not know how to act. Rev. Wright has his views, but he knows better than to go on a media tour and show is arrogant behind,when he know what is at stake. yes I alo heard the TV invitatio to Wright came from some commitee connected with Hillary. A member was part of the people voicing opinions about Wright. When another person brought the invitiation to Wright fact up, the woman wanted to change the suggest. She says “it doesn’t matter who invited on TV, what we are talking about now is what he said”. No I guess it does not matter or surprise anyone that Clinton and supportors as well as Wright are bed fellows.

The words of Rev Wright were truthful, but it was not his time to say those things when as smart as he portrays to be that he should’ve known that it would definitely sabotage his campaign. I believe the Clinton or McCain campain paid this man to do this. (Willie Lynch Syndrome) has reared its ugly head again. I am a 55 yr old women and I’ve yet to see Blacks as a nation come together as one to achieve a positive goal. I agree with Corey about the Billary spin. When I heard Wright deliberately speak against Obama, I believed the rev had sold his soul to the Billary. I know that there is conversation we have when we’re among our own, but when you take a national platform and are supposed to be someone’s friend, you speak with a national tone and keep yourself from hanging a brother out to dry.

I’m sadden by the latest turn of events. Rev. Jeremiah Wright should’ve waited to take on the media until either after the election or in his book due out later this year. Rev. Jeremiah “over the top” performance on Monday at the National Press Club forced was unbelieveable.
Rev. Jeremiah Wright should’ve focused on the facts about his record and left the rhetoric for his book. He definitely shouldn’t have “questioned Barack’s sincerity” on the national stage. Sen. Barack Obama had no choice, but to respond to a “character attack” by one his own supporters.
I will still support Sen. Barack Obama regardless of this latest sideshow. Sen. Obama has shown the “knowledge” and “strength of character” through this political process. He cares about all people and would make a great President.
This is all B.S. and politics. Rev. Wright would not have went on television unless he had a conversation with Obama. Black people are so stupid, we don’t realize that this is propaganda that everyone is buying into. So what if he is the first black president…what is he gonna do for you personally?
Whether Wright is right is wrong doesn’t really matther at this point. The timing of all this will hurt Obama. Is there a conspiracy, who knows? But the timing is certainly suspect.
If a white person got on national tv and outlined the problems with Black Americans we would all be marching from here to high heaven. Rev. Wright is wrong!! His approach, his comments, and his disregard for the bigger picture…ALL WRONG!! A black man highlighting the problems and injustices of white America has not helped us in the past and is not helping us now. MLK was the last black leader to be respected and heard and it was because of the peaceful reverence in his approach. As a man of God, Rev. Wright should always first and formost be an advocate of peace, love and unity. I am disgusted by his actions and hope Obama can rebound from this fools obsession with hearing himself speak.

The pastor has no right to act as if he is speaking for Barack. Those are the pastor views not Barack’s and just b/c you have known someone for 20 years does not mean you know everything about them. Obviously this pastor has held back some of his views from Barack and now that he can get 15 mins of fame he is takinbg it. Barack is not speaking against black pastor’s as Wright tried to accuse him of but he is speaking against a arrogant man that is releasing his personal views not Godly views on what he thinks of politics and the government.
I am very disappointed in Reverend Wright…although I agree with some of his utterances. I don’t think his timing is on point…here we have a very good chance of having the first black president of the U.S…and Rev. Wright continues to indirectly hurt Obama’s chances….sorry to say, but White America is looking for a reason not to vote for Barack…a reason to say that he is not suitable….a reason to say “AHA” a black man just won’t do. I think that the Rev. is giving them some ammo needed to pull Barack down…..now once again - after the first scenario was dealt with…and had started fading away in the aftermath of Obama’s brilliant and presidential speech - the focus is not on Obama’s constructive message, but on Rev. Wright’s antics…..this is like black on black crime. Obama can distance himself a million and ten times, but his critics will always keep him connected to his former pastor.

Many people are seething and crying out about the old wounds that Rev. Wright is opening up and pouring salt over.
What if Obama loses the election? Will everyone point to Rev. Wright and say it was his fault for speaking out spreading All The Lies?
Or was it because of the ‘timing’ of Rev. Wright’s remarks?

The Rev.Wright factor would be a portion of the equation should Sen.Obama lose the nomination and or election.Try too keep in mind that many people do not want him to be President for a number of reasons including race which is really at the forefront of some of those who oppose him,although they will nver admit that in public
Dave….I agree with you man. The supporters of Barack are going to find someone to blame when he loses the General Election. I guarantee it’s going be either Hillary’s or Rev Wright’s fault. This is the America, in my opinion, that Obama’s campaign desires to change, and if these voters end up being the voice of Indiana, then I’m scared.
First of all everything the good reverend said was correct. The terroristic information concerning our government, the Aids epidemic in general and the epidemic in Africa in particular. Anyone with any knowledge of these United States of America know that our country will do anything and everything to satisfy its needs.(War in Irac)
My problem with reverend Wright is that if you want change you have to be in position to make change and that is Sen Barama is trying to achieve but the reverand wants spotlight to shine on himself. And it has at the cost of another brother. And if my friend of 20 years dogged me out and cost me my job, we would have a falling out as is the case with Barack and Wright.
Let me first start by saying that I think the interview on PBS on Friday made Rev. Wright look human and humble, which was well received by the media who he says attacked him. Even his speech on Saturday was a good one (aside from some of his antics) but Sunday??? I was just baffled by his blatant disrespect. Keep in mind that there are sooooo many people in Wright’s ears hyping him up and encouraging this behaviour as well.
Between us, we know it’s a game we have to play to get ahead. Think about it, as a professional, do you go to work and act like you do with your “homegirls” or “homeboys” after work. It’s the same thing with Barack. If you ever listen to him talk with Tom Joyner, you know he wants to cut up some times but has to catch himself. He’s a smart guy but realizes there’s a fine line he has to walk to win this election.

When is the right time to tell the truth?? Africans in American have been walked on, spit on, raped, murdered, culturally and psychologically castrated and reduced to less than human in the good ole US of A for hundreds of years. How can we tell one of our own that now is not the time?? Why are we running from the truth when the majority of us feel, think and suspect the same thing as Rev. Wright? As I spoke to a friend on the phone last night, “A Black man could never be president of the United States. But a negro could.” Stop thinking a person that looks like you has your best interest at heart. How many Black people have gotten to a position of public prominence and influence and done absoultely nothing to improve the lives of everyday people? Rice, Powell, Thomas, etc. Truth be told…America is doomed to failure until it atones for it’s sins. Not just the ones that are easy to talk about either. Sure, America holds perhaps the greatest and most promising potential of all other nations, but it’s own demons are alive and well. No recompense for slavery, Jim Crow and the other untold abuses suffered by our community. Not to mention the near annihilation of the entire indigenous population. America needs a look in the mirror.
We need to focus on the issues at hand. Republicans are trying conquer and divide africian american, white americans, all americans to the real problem WE americans are facing. Ecomony, housing problems, health problems. unemployment, Iran/terrism, ect.. We as a NATION HAVE TO PULL TOGETHER AS ONE AND MAKE OUR VOICES BE HEARD. Wright is well aware of the divide and conquer strategy, yet chose to aid an attempt at political lynching to try and derail Obama’s promising prospects, and the hope of millions in the US and many more around the World that Obama and his inspirational message would succeed. For all his claims of spiritual righteousness and Obama’s hypocrisy, Wright seems perfectly happy in a million dollar house in White suburbs and a lucrative speaking career where he can pontificate futher on black liberation theology after sabotaging Obama’s campaign at a critical phase. Sadly, Wright for all his education and intellect, joins a long list of those who directly or indirectly chose to aid and abet divisive tactics that have caused great damage to the African-American community, even while casting blame elsewhere. It is time to stand up and say Wright is wrong!
