Edwards Endorses Obama

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) former Sen. John Edwards (D-NC)

 Pamela Gentry,  Senior Political Producer

Posted May 14, 2008 – It looks like the former North Carolina senator John Edwards has made his presidential pick – and he’s decided it’s Sen. Barack Obama.

This endorsement is significant because Edwards will release 19 pledged delegates who could decide to follow the former presidential candidate’s lead.  Edwards is seen as a strong advocate for the poor and working class.  His endorsement could be the help Obama’s needs to increase his appeal and help him woo those voters.

Obama and Edwards are expected to appear this evening during a campaign event in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Just a reminder, Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich) told me Edwards would endorse the Illionis senator, he just didn’t know when.

Do you think Obama will select Edwards as his VP?

He’s only endorsing him becasue Hillary doesn’t have a chance anymore…J Edwards didn’t have to wait this long, he should have done it a long time ago!!

Jump on Mr. Edwards. There’s plenty of seating at the back of the bandwagon. Welcome aboard sir.

  6. msdee on May 14th, 2008

I’m very please to hear that John Edwards has endorsed Sen.Obama, We all in need of a change. The Clintons had their Terms and Turnin office Sen. Hilary is making all of these promises, But why werent these same promises implemented when she and her Husband in office..hhmmmmm.. Food for thought. Go!! Barak!!

  7. Natedoggg on May 14th, 2008

But on the other hand! I was also thinking that this might have been planned! This might have been a political strategy to steal the spotlight away from Hillary’s win in West Virginia! If that is the case then I think is pure genius on Obama’s part! So I think it is the right time for Edwards to endorse him! So Iam happy Edwards is doing it now! Cuz this is a great time to stomp on Hillary’s win in WV!Cuz it is over for Hillary!

    OBAMA 08

    PEACE

  12. Omorenee on May 14th, 2008

I started out with Hillary, but as time went by and I listen closely to her, (you’re right Simiyah) she did sound like a repulican among other things, as bashing Obama for no reason. These are some of the reasons I changed my mind. In my heart I knew John Edwards would endorse Obama. He was just waiting for the right time to do so.

  13. Hanson on May 14th, 2008

I’m with John Edwards. If he supports Obama, so will I. Edwards was the only true progressive in the race. He would have made the best president. I hope he is chosen for vice president.

i hope obama wins this whole thing over hilary. he sounds very confident in the things that he promises.

  18. Gwenola on May 14th, 2008

Obama and Edwards; I think I could vote for that team.

It is time for Hillary to sit down. She has blowing smoke up everyone long enough.

    ABOUT TIME!

  20. lashon on May 14th, 2008

Let’s be thankful that he is endorsing Obama and hope that Hillary close the door behind her because she is out. She is wasting valuable time. It’s time to focus on beating McCain.

  21. Portuguese on May 14th, 2008

I think this is the greatest thing since Kennedy. I believe this pair would make a great team in our democracy. Let’s hope that Obama will have him for Vice President. I admire Hillary for her perseverence but the end of the road has come. Go Obama 08′.

  22. Brown $ugar on May 14th, 2008

Well, Well now don’t that beat all? I’m like Omorenee was, I was with Clinton. The reason was because I didn’t know any better and the Clinton name was a well known name. But when I put ignorance aside and listened to each candidate it only made sense to go with Obama. And John probably did the same thing, came to his senses and went with what felt right in his heart. The sad part is, this election is going to come down to how racist america is and that’s what everybody wont say. Most white ameicans have abondon the fabel thought that blacks are an inferior race but older american have not and will only vote for Hillary just cuz she’s white or so that Obama wont win. I wish america would grow up…. CNN made a statement that this election will come down to the white man. It will depend on how predjudic they are or showvanistic what’s best has nothing to do with it….Sad but true!!!!

  23. Susan on May 14th, 2008

Thank God for Blessings….there is no stopping Obama now. John Edwards played his cards very well and the timing is perfect (whether planned or not). Hillary is an afterthought…whether or not she knows it yet! We gotta get ready for McCain, and he will be easier for Obama to get by far. No one wants to hear about the Republicans these days so it is all good for OBAMA 08!!!

  26. olounwa on May 15th, 2008

good news from john edwards i know he was mad as hell when bush stole the last election once again and he wanted to fight on when john kerry concided defeat over that hairsbreath margin .as for hiliary she should pack her bags and wait for another four yrs… its over now.. the southern gentleman has shook his hand on it…

  27. olounwa on May 15th, 2008

    OBAMA IN 08!!!

  28. Kim on May 15th, 2008

I agree with you all. I supported the Clintons in the 90’s and they were great. but it is time for change. I have had enough of bush. also I’m deeply disappointed in Hillary through this whole campaign. she has acted desperate and total disrespect to the black community by being dirty to Obama. I never thiught she would act the way she has when blacks all over the country had supported her husband. they acted like they have been betrayed or something. It is sad. I have lost respect for her and she has acted like a childish brat.

  29. snewsome on May 15th, 2008

Hey dont hate on John Edwards…remember he is still a politician and a smart one because since he had to drop out it made his chances better of beng in the white house anyway by endorsng whoever is proably going to win that way he would be chosen to run with them as VP and anyway the democrats are supposed to all be on the same team.

His delay is part of the political respect game which many felt Sen. Clinton deserves. There will be many more coming out to support Sen. Obama. Most feel she should have let go a long time ago. Remember four years ago she was considered a shoe in. Out of no where comes Mr. Obama. This was like a earthquake hitting her in the heart. I feel her pain but I can’t reach her. She needs to let go and move on.

  36. Frank on May 15th, 2008

I THINK THAT IS WAS VERY SMART TO HAVE J. EDWARDS TO COME OUT WHEN HE DID (DON’T KNOW IF IT WAS PLANNED). THIS I BELIEVE WILL GET HIM OVER THE EDGE THAT HE NEEDS TO GET THE 2,025 SUPER DELEGATES THAT HE NEEDED. CLINTON WAS COUNTING THE SUPER DELEGATES WHEN SHE WAS IN THE LEAD. NOW IT’S ABOUT THE PEOPLE LOLOLOLOLOL!

  37. Barbara on May 15th, 2008

Edwards had to jump in because Hillary is tearing the Democratic party apart. I think she should continue the race until the end.

  39. Renee on May 15th, 2008

Wow! This has really made my day! I’m all about a Democratic President but Sen Clinton has me frowning at her. She is constantly try to demean Obama but she looks like a fool every time. I always liked Sen Edwards from the beginning. If he’s the Vice, we’ll have one dynamic Democratic team.

  40. Rafpheal Washington, Sr on May 15th, 2008

The Time has come for all eyes to be open, and Edwards eyes are open, he knows that if Hillary gets into this office, we will be in a recession within months, her ideas are like Bush for the Rich and Famous -

  41. Donna S. on May 15th, 2008

Although I am for Obama, I liked the way Senator Edwards spoke while he was campaigning. Regardless of his motive for chosing Obama, he’s with us now and that’s what counts. He would probably make a good VP.

  42. MICHELLE on May 15th, 2008

Seeing J.Edward and B. Obama uniting with one another on stage was a beautiful sight. I, like many other Obama supporters; have a genuine concerns for Michelle & Barack Obama and the presidental contest aginst the Clinton’s, Clinton supporters, rupublicans and we cannot forget the media; BUT Obama, has once again shown America that he is ready to lead this country.

  43. tmcg on May 15th, 2008

Don’t discount Senator Clinton from the race … She is still a strong force in this democratic presidential elect candidacy race! I am amazed at how very unsure and insecure some proclaimed Obama supporters are … the smell of fear is quite intense among you. CLINTON FOR PRESIDENT!!

  51. Bethany on May 15th, 2008

I THINK EDWARDS IS ENDORSING OBAMA CAUSE HE WANTS A SHOT @ BEING THE VP- HE KNOWS HILLARY NEEDS TO FALL BACK!!!! SHE IS A WRAP FOR SURE! EDWARDS WANTS TO BOOST HIS POPULARITY AND WANTS TO MAKE SURE HE STILL HAS A JOB- THAT’S ALL. LOL!!! IN MY OPINION, HE SHOULD HAVE BACKED OBAMA A WHILE AGO- IF YOU CAN’T BEAT THEM JOIN THEM AND I THINK THAT IS WHAT HE IS DOING.

  52. ton on May 15th, 2008

  54. Inplanesight on May 15th, 2008

Hillary played the race card, her ruthless behavior made me decide to back Obama, she wants to win at all cost and devide the democrats is the only thing I feel she have accomplished.

  55. Terrell T on May 15th, 2008

I think Hillary shot herself in the foot. I think Obama and Hillary would have done well together (eventually on the same ticket)when this first started. But now that I’ve seen how devisive she can be and how she tried to tear him down. I really believe that Obama and Edwards would make a good team. I think she’s too far gone now for Barak to consider her as vice. She really showed her behind on this one. Most importantly, I am glad that Barak didn’t stoop down to Hillary’s level and has been more professional in his campaign.

  56. Angelic777 on May 15th, 2008

Well, I guess my first choice of words did not meet the guidelines of posting.
So, simply put, vote for Obama/Edwards or perish.

  59. Jose on May 15th, 2008

I can’t see why folks don’t see the logic of disruption that Hilary’s delayed departure causes to Obama’s campaign! This still leaves her open for a 2012 bid. And don’t think that such a plan B is beyond the whole Clinton machine. Spill red wine on Obama’s shirt just as he makes his entrance to the ball and she departs so fresh and clean. She’s more than diabolical, heh! She’s tactical!!The essences of modern politics, for the losing candidate is the eternal spin zone, thats all she has left against Obama.

  60. PJ on May 15th, 2008

I am happy that John Edward endosed Obama, we do not need the Clinton’s back in the white house they had their chance, this is a new day for new changes for all people of all races, gas prices are getting out of control and our soldier have been gone long enough, and we lose a soldier everyday just look at the news. However, it is time for a change and new ideals to improve some things around the world today. Peace to everyone!

  65. cocoa on May 15th, 2008

Good, now let’s all get out and vote when the time comes. Action speaks louder than words.
So let’s take the actions we need to do to vote now.

  66. King John on May 15th, 2008

08AMA should make Hitlery eat her words;” I couldn’t see me and obama on the same ticket” and pick J. Edwards. I mean, edwards doesn’t make me feel great, but it would capture more votes to solidify the win, as well as, balance the ticket/office.

  67. Torrian on May 15th, 2008

I believe that timing is everything, and now was the perfect time for Sen. Edwards to do that. I believe that his endorsement is very genuine and who knows maybe he will be the VP.

  68. Monique on May 15th, 2008

Absolutely!!! I see John Edwards Obama’s Vice President!!! OH YEA!

  69. edmoore on May 15th, 2008

TMCG—- what are you talking about, why would anyone supporting Obama be fearful. Have you checked the polls lately we are winning and Hillary doesn’t have a chance to come back so it seems as if you and her other suppoters should be fearful. IT’S OVER FOR HER! YOU GET IT NOW

  70. Bridget-504 on May 15th, 2008

I do believe that Edwards heard talk of him being a possible candidate for Vice President. So maybe he’s doing it for his own selfish reasons. But I still think the two together will bring about positive change. Hillary I running like a replican Obama has this in the bag and will be the running candidate against McCain. We should focus on that and get more people to register to vote b/c as we know lots of white and conservatives won’t will not vote. Finally we’re seeing a change.

  71. Black and Proud on May 15th, 2008

With so much BS going on and all I just hope our Black candidate is safe. I don’t want this man to lose his life. We may see him make the office but they may try to take his life. My prayers are high
for Obama. I hope he goes on to make History, and not have HIliary as the VP. That would play right into thier hands. This is something that we cannot forget about. Do not under estimate these people. Review the history with Kennedy.
They can make it happen and do a cover up so fast.
They will do what ever it takes to rain on this parade. Much Love Peace Out

  72. Coyia on May 15th, 2008

The fire marshalls had to close the doors, because of it being way over capacity.
Nonetheless, people stood outside in the cold to listen on the speakers…

  73. Sherry on May 15th, 2008

Well, we now have our ticket!!!!!! Few things to know about Politics: !. It’s “Survival of the Fittest”, 2. Timing is everything. Think about it, why WOULD John Edwards make his endorsement before now?? What sense would that make?? I honestly don’t believe that Edwards would have ever endorsed Clinton anyway.

  74. Ms. Bruce on May 15th, 2008

I’m happy to see John Edwards join forces with Obama. I agree with Cocoa, let’s get out and vote and make it happen. I’m on my job talking to my friends who are still confused. I can’t tell them who to vote for, but to vote. This is a good looking ticket and it will work for the good of us.

  75. YB on May 15th, 2008

In the beginning, I thought that Hillary and Obama would make a great team, but after following her campaign and observing her divisive behavior, she may have ruined that opportunity. Also, while observing, I don’t think that Bill Clinton is prejudice. Hillary condones racist remarks and divisiveness. She looked good in the past, because of her husband. Now, through this campaign, her true colors have emerged. Hillary is no doubt very strong politically. What would be good for Hillary, right now, would be to help heal the Democratic Party. She can begin doing that by delivering inspiring speeches that will bring all voters together - including those so called “blue-collar white voters.”

I am so proud of my people who were initially for Hillary and switched to Barack (I mean that and I thank God for it with my heart). I’m just waiting (still) for some of our black elected officials to come over to the right side too. I can’t believe they just sat back and watched Hillary try to lynch the brother. It may be a long time before God gives us this chance again! Let’s not blow it!

BTW, what brought me to Barack was his substance. Race happens to be a very nice bonus. :o))

  85. IRETTA on May 15th, 2008

I think John Edwards, knew what he was doing by waiting this long to endorse Obama. Get ready American I truly belive Dr.King dreams is finally coming true. Obama is going to be the first black president in history. The time is now, not tomorrow, not yesterday, NOW

  86. mikki on May 15th, 2008

Funny: Chris Matthews said the other day that the Obama campaign probably has a bunch of superdelegates in their back pocket, and they dole them out as needed. Edwards already knew last friday on MSNBC, when he said that he’d voted May 6th in N.C. for the same person that he was going to endorse. The timing, I agree, was impeccable.

I also agree with Brown Sugar… There’s now a string of revelations coming out about how Obama volunteers are facing blatant hostility from some whites. Ah the many faces of racism!

  87. webster .G on May 15th, 2008

I am very pleased that Edwards is endorsing Obama, I think he made a wise choice it’s 2008 and it is time for a change.the number 8 means a new beginning and I’m pleased to know Obama is in it to win it. Yes we can!!!! Yes he will pioneer new territories and yes he is prepared for this race and well qualified to make well thought out decisions and cautious response to question ask that has no real significance to his presidency. I believe he will be the First Black President of the united states of America. Go Obama very vigilantly.

  88. MHOLIDAY on May 15th, 2008

I THINK Sen. Edwards IS A VERY GOOD RUNNING MATE FOR OBAMA , ONE OF THE THINGS I LIKE ABOUT Sen. Edwards IS WHEN HE CAME TO NEW ORLEANS AND UPLIFTED ALOT OF PEOPLE ,HE PENTSENTS WAS WARM AND IT LET ME KNOW THIS GUY WOULD ALSO MAKE A GOOD PRESIDENT AS WELL ,OBAMA/EWARD Ticket Is A VERY GOOD ONE,BOTH ARE YOUNG AND SMART !!AND I THINK ITS TIME FOR ALL THE HILLARY AND OBAMA SUPPORTS TO STOP BEATING EACH OTHER UP NOW ..

  89. O.G. on May 15th, 2008

“SLOW YOUR ROLL PEOPLE”…remember, Edwards is still a politician! I believe that if Hilary was ahead of Obama…Edwards would have jumped on her bandwagon also. Besides, if you can’t win the Presidency…Vice President wouldn’t be so bad. If I was Obama…I would be careful of “DAGGERS” from his “NEW BUDDY”! As a matter of fact, I think I would feel better/safer with Hilary as a running mate rather than Edwards.

Who cares when Edwards joined - just as long as he did. I think he has the support that Obama needs, and maybe it will make the White racists feel just a tiny bit better about having a Black man for president. Maybe they can make up stuff how Obama is a puppet for Edwards or whatever…just as long as Obama gets in :D

  94. PATRICE on May 16th, 2008

I THINK ITS GREAT JOHN EDWARDS IS INDORSING OBAMA. I DON’T KNOW OR CARE IF IT WAS PLANNED OR NOT, BUT I KNOW ITS A GREAT MOVE FOR BOTH EDWARDS AND OBAMA. THE 2 WOULD/WILL MAKE A GREAT TEAM. 95. Misty on May 16th, 2008

IT’S FUNNY HOW EVERYONE IS HAPPY FOR THE ENDORSEMENT BUT EDWARDS FLAT OUT SAID HE WOULD NOT ACCEPT THE VP OFFER ON THE TICKET. EDWARDS IS SMART BECAUSE HE DOES NOT WANT TO BE ON A LOSING TICKET AS VP 2 TIMES IN A ROW.

    McCAIN IS GOING TO WIN

  96. lashon on May 17th, 2008

Why would anyone in their right mind believe that a BET political blog would not have Whites posing as Blacks writing posts? It is WET not BET!

Any Black person that doesnt know the true Obama deserves to be under the rock that they call home!
