The Dems Could Have a Nominee This Weekend
By Pamela Gentry, Senior Political Producer
Posted May 30, 2008 – This could be it; after Saturday one of the Democratic candidates will be closer to nabbing the nomination. And if the party’s leadership can prevail, they’re predicting the race between Senators Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) will not drag on to the party convention in August.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) predicted on Thursday it will be over on by next week’s end. During a speech to the Commonwealth Club of California, Reid said, he has consulted Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, (D-Calif.), and they all agree.
Reid went on to say that if neither candidate has clinched the nomination after the Democratic National Committee’s Rules and Bylaws Committee decision about Michigan and Florida; or after Puerto Rico’s primary; or following Montana’s and South Dakota’s primary, he’ll advise Senate Democrats to step-up and end the contest by taking sides as super-delegates.
But will President Bill Clinton and the former first lady bow out? There is speculation she’s planning to take her fight to the floor of the convention. Some of her supporters are already planning protests outside the DNC Rules Committee meeting.
“I don’t lament this campaign taking as long as it has, but it’s time it ended,” Reid said.
A fight on the convention floor could be the death of the Democratic Party chance to take back the White House for a couple of reasons. First, new young voters attracted to the party might bolt and a prolonged battle could allow the two camps to fester, dig in and create an even bigger divide.
While the Clintons may be more popular with older voters, older voters can’t deliver party strength in the future. The young folks Obama and Clinton have brought to the dance can’t become disillusioned or loose faith in process. If they do, the Dems may never see the opportunity to draw them back into the fold.
The leadership of the Democratic Party is stepping in (they hope) before it’s too late, but “too late” might already be here. Democrats want to see if they can “unite” and “win” in November; and the only way that will happen is if they can end this primary sooner rather than later.
Tune in later today as we talk politics on a new on-line web-cast “Today’s Voice.” The political talk show will look at the week in politics and provide analysis. I’ll be one of their featured guests today, so check it out at 2 p.m. EST, at www.myvoicedc.com.

This is a sad day and I am so disillusioned by the Democratic Party that I will not simply vote Democratic any longer. I will not vote for Obama in November because as the so-called new age, change agent of the Democratic party he is not very good in the job. He is, it is turning out a hard-core typical politician with a racist twist to him based on the people who have been his friends for all of these years.
Jamal, you are a sorry sight,I am a white woman who finds it unbelievable that a blackman has the guts to pull down his fellowman,it is one thing to support a candidate of your choice just like I am for a blackman not my white counterpart hillary, but you will never hear me pull her down coz I am white and so is she,i am a woman and so is she,I just prefer Obama’s politics to hers. But you Jamal thinks that the use of choice words and insinuations are appropriate to use against one of your own, should I say half your own and half mine!!Why would he hate part of him by being biased against blacks or whites? You need to make your choice without sounding flippant!!
I agree with Lindi about Jamal,I will add and say you were never a democrat, coz the party and its ideology was there way before Hillary moved from her DaD’s Republican party and it will still be there after people like you move on.We will not miss you, with your chameleon alligiance which changes to look like its background.I am a staunch Hillary supporter and would like her to win but if it does not workout I am standing in line to see a democrat become president I WILL NEVER VOTE REPUBLICAN BY CHOOSING MCCAIN OR FAILING TO REGiSTER MY VOTE THUS ENABLING HIM TO WIN!!
What happened to my comment!
yeah
yeah man
I WILL BE GLAD WHEN A NOMINEE IS CHOSEN SO THAT WE CAN GET TO THE REAL ISSUES. THE NOMINEE WILL BE UP AGAINST MCCAIN. THE ONLY THING I HAVE REALLY HEARD IS A LOT OF BACKLASHING,RACE AND RELIGIOUS ISSUES. IT’S TIME TO CUT THE BULL AND GET ON WITH WHO’S GOING TO DO WHAT AND WHEN TO TURN THIS ECONOMY AROUND. BECAUSE THE WAY I SEE IT IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE,ALL THE NAME CALLING AND POINTING FINGERS IS NOT HELPING.
I JUST PRAY THAT WHEN THE PARTY IS CHOSEN THIS WILL NOT CONTINUE TO BE THE MAIN FOCUS IN THIS ELECTION. IT HAS TURNED INTO A CIRCUS AND IT’S TIME FOR IT TO STOP. I HAVE NEVER IN MY TIME SEEN ANTHING LIKE IT AND THIS WILL BE ONE ELECTION I WILL NEVER FORGET. EVERYONE SHOWED THERE TRUE COLORS AND I DO NOT HAVE THE RESPECT FOR MRS.CLINTON AS I HAD BEFORE THIS ELECTION STARTED.
HOWEVER THIS OUTCOME TURNS OUT JUST REMEMBER WHO IS REALLY IN CHARGE OF US ALL,GOD AND PEOPLE NEED TO REALIZE THAT.
