Black Lawmakers Backing Clinton Out in the Cold?

Published by Pamela Gentry on Thursday, June 5, 2008 at 3:35 pm.

By Pamela Gentry, Senior Political Producer

June 5, 2008 – It’s too bad Sen. Hillary Clinton didn’t bow out of the race graciously Tuesday night by congratulating her opponent and leading the squabbling Democratic Party on the path toward unity.  By prolonging the inevitable, she has managed to tarnish her name, raise more questions about her motives and leave her loyal Black lawmakers standing out in the cold.

Clinton’s image in the Black community was once that of a beloved political figure who cared for and understood the plight of Black America.  But after her resounding defeat in South Carolina to Sen. Barack Obama, Clinton started making her appeal to “White working-class voters.”  Those comments became the theme for her campaign.  It sounded as if the panicky candidate had abandoned her interest in the Black vote altogether, for fear that she’d lose fellow Whites to her African-American opponent.
   Congressional Black Caucus
But early in the campaign, Obama and Clinton split the endorsements of members of the Congressional Black Caucus almost evenly. And, for many of those African-American lawmakers, their loyalty to the Clinton legacy was so strong that they were willing to go against the will of their constituents, at least 90 percent of whom were behind Obama.

But now that the race is over, those Black lawmakers who stood with Clinton need to find a way to win back the favor of the folks who sent them to Washington.

So the perplexing speech Clinton delivered on Tuesday night – the one in which she dissed the first African-American major-party nominee by failing to congratulate his amazing victory or to urge her supporters to get behind him – has confirmed for many African-American members of Congress the notion that they hitched their political careers to the wrong engine.

One of the highest profile endorsements for Clinton came from Harlem Democrat Rep. Charles Rangel, a longtime friend who had backed Clinton’s bid for the Senate before proclaiming her the best choice to lead America. Said Rangel, speaking to ABC News, “A lot of members who backed Clinton, their communities backed Obama,” the implicit point being that Clinton could at least be gracious in this historic moment for Black America.

Black lawmakers in New York – i.e., Reps. Rangel, Yvette Clarke, Gregory Meeks and Edolphus Towns – had hoped that Tuesday night would give them the opportunity to switch their endorsements to Obama and start the healing process in their districts. Rangel asked, “Why should they [Clinton supporters] be the last ones out there?”

Essentially, he meant out there in the cold.

Well, Rep. Clark is one of those who decided it was time to come in from the cold.  She released a statement Wednesday announcing her support for the presumptive nominee and calling for party unity. “As for me, in consultation with the people of the 11th Congressional District of New York, as I have heard our Democratic nominee say many times, ‘it is time for us to turn the page.’”

Turning the page will be easier for some Black lawmakers than others. Rep. Shelia Jackson-Lee (D-Texas.), who has been one of Clinton’s most vocal supporters, remained in virtually every available photo opportunity with Clinton, even as she was getting booed in her mostly Black Houston district whenever she stood before her constituents. Ohio Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs-Jones, Clinton’s national campaign co-chairwoman, stayed by her candidate’s side long after local Clevelanders jumped from Hillary’s burning political ship.

But many African-American members figured out early on what time it was. Georgia Reps. John Lewis and David Scott, for example, both switched their endorsements to Obama following the Georgia primary, when Obama won 85 percent of the Black vote in their congressional districts.

Given the attitude in Black America, it came as no surprise on Wednesday when Black high-profile supporters began to prompt the two-term New York senator to bring her campaign to a close. By late afternoon, her campaign released a statement saying, “Senator Clinton will be hosting an event in Washington, D.C., to thank her supporters and express her support for Senator Obama and party unity. This event will be held on Sen. Hillary Clinton and Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas)Saturday to accommodate more of Senator Clinton’s supporters who want to attend.” That’s a far cry from her defiant, disarming comments at Baruch College following her victory in South Dakota – and loss in Montana – on Tuesday night.

But it’s not clear how Clinton will fashion her departure this weekend. Sadly – and characteristically – she is expected to keep her options open, even after suspending her campaign. Certainly, her goal will be to hold onto her delegates and negotiate keeping some of her issues – like universal health care – on the front burner. But such a stance at least offers the appearance that she has little confidence that the Democratic nominee will look out for women, and “working-class White folks.” It also signals that deep inside she believes much of the mud that she slung at her opponent during the primary – that he is ill-prepared to be president, too elitist and lacks compassion for the issues affecting Joe and Jane Bag-of-doughnuts. Even Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, an ardent Clinton surrogate during the primaries, has stated in no uncertain terms that Clinton has stepped over the line by attempting to wheel and deal despite her defeat.

What does Hillary want? Speculation is swirling that she wants to be vice president; secretary of Health and Human Services; or U.S. Supreme Court justice. But no one knows for sure.

But one thing we do know, Black lawmakers need her to get off the stage and allow the next act to get underway. If she handles the situation properly over the next few days, the new star might even be willing to take his show to some of those angry Black districts and convince his exuberant audiences that they should forget and forgive.

This was a very good article, now I think that people have seen Hillary for who she really is. It is truly time for a change in America, let’s get it done!!

Betty said on June 5th, 2008

This was really a good article. Now it’s time for the African American lawmakers who backed Senator Clinton, suck it up, and get on with the business of the Democratic Party; getting Senator Obama elected.

For all you Hillary supporters out there. Please keep this in mind..The Supreme Court.Need I say more?

Congrats. on a fine article. I am very fearful of Senator Clinton, someone who has all but stated that her final card to be played is the hopes that some deranged soul will step up and eliminate brother Obama just as they did to Bobby Kennedy. These are very sick people, they will do anything to get back in the White House, Let’s all continue to pray for brother Obama’s safety!

they are wasting their time trying to prove they are not going to vote for obama because his black and you shouldnt but check out the things that obama has to offer
hilary could of bowed out gracefully
the mistake that people made was to think or believe that b/c bill did a great job as a democratic president
then hilary was going to do the same
they are not the same people
and instead of them trying to get over the lost
and promote better ways of how to possibly become the dream team and do what’s right for the country
and people from all race and ethnicity
they are being prideful and bashing each other
i wanted these lawyers to justify why they were behind hilary rather than just look like her puppets

Shirley said on June 5th, 2008

This is a great article. It was most informative. I have never trustd Hilary. I hope Senator Obama sees through her devious facade.. She is a very heartless and spiteful person. Her loyalty is not vested in Senator’s Obama’s plan for change in America.

It sounds to me like Obama’s supporters are afraid that Hillary’s supporters will take their votes elsewhere in November. I’m an African American supporter of Hillary Clinton and ‘m loving the fact that we Hillary supporters control whether or not the “American Pop Idol” gets to the Oval Office. I’ll never vote for Barack Obama.

BooBoo said on June 5th, 2008

eric… STOP BEING RIDICULOUS.. THIS ISNT AMERICAN IDOL WHERE THE WINNER AFFECTS YOU..THIS IS ABOUT DO YOU WANT ANOTHER 4 YEARS OF BUSH ECONOMICS… SO WHAT YOUR CANDIDATE LOST… IF YOU PRACTICE DECEPTION IT COMES BACK TO HAUNT YOU. IF YOU THINK THAT OBAMA IS GOING TO BEG HER TO BE HIS VP CANDIDATE IT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. THIS WOMAN WENT OUTSIDE THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY TO STATE THAT OUR OPPOSITION MCCAIN WOULD BE BETTER AT RUNNING THE COUNTRY THAN OBAMA. OBAMA MADE IT HERE WITHOUT ALL THE NEGATIVITY. HE EVEN GAVE HER CONGRATULATIONS WHEN HE CLINCHED THE OTHER NIGHT..SHE SPENT HER ENTIRE SPEECH TALKING ABOUT HERSELF… WIN OR LOSE IN THE FALL BY NOT CHOOSING HER AS HIS VP SHOWS THAT THIS MAN STANDS STRONG… HE KNOWS WHAT STAES SHE PULLED, AND WHITE VOTES SHE CARRIED, BUT HE CARRIES THEM ALSO… SO WHAT BETTER MAN WOULD YOU WANT TO GO IT ON HIS OWN DECISION TO MAKE HIS OWN VP CHOICE WIN OR LOSE…OBAMA O8 STAY TRUE TO YOUR PARTY ERIC OR FACE MORE GAS PRICES GOING UP ETC!!!!

WOW ERIC!!!!!!!!!! Let it be made known that no one is afraid of Hillary Clinton’s supporters. You hold no cards, and you pull no strings in this election. I see that you have taken on the characteristics of your girl Hillary. You think that you are doing something by saying that you will not vote for Mr. Obama. You are so sad, and so are your comments. Stop being such a hateful hater. If it is God’s will for Obama to be president, believe me, that there is nothing that you or anyone can do about that. For every one person that says they wont vote for him, because they are sore, God can raise up many more that will. So touche’ to you and the power that you think you possess……..

Kimberly said on June 6th, 2008

By the way, this isn’t about you being black voting for hillary because frankly your race doesn’t even matter. this isn’t about race…this isn’t about barack… this isn’t about hillary…it’s about the future of the nation. if mccain’s your choice…again it doesn’t matter. there are many who are intelligent enough to vote for the right candidate…you’re not one of them it seems.

Kimberly said on June 6th, 2008

eric get over yourself. your vote isn’t worth it…

jfffnn said on June 6th, 2008

I also agree that this is a very good article. What amazes me is that all those who stood by Clinton did not have the political sense to jump ship after Bill. Clinton in South Carolina clearly played the race card and Hillary clearly implied that she could/will win the older less educated white vote. That in itself would have been enough reason too switch camps. If these Black Reps. feel left out in the cold it is because they did not want too come inside the winning camp, they brought it on themselves.

Mike H. said on June 6th, 2008

What truly upset me enough that I sent an email to the CBC was the obvious disrespect some members of the CBC showed our Democratic nominee Tuesday night. This was a great moment for all Americans and they didn’t have the decency to congratulate him. Tubbs-Jones was on MSNBC still spouting the Clinton line and politicing for Hillary to be VP. I say that they deserve what they get. If they are voted out office, then maybe it will open their eyes.

Sarah said on June 6th, 2008

BooBoo, south carolina and Kimberly:

I agree with you wholeheartedly.

Eric,

You control nothing and Senator Obama supporters aren’t afraid of your vote because your vote is meaningless and has no substance. Since your candidate didn’t win…you want this country to continue down the same black hole that Bush has led us down just so you can say…we should have chosen Hillary? What a statement coming from a so-called Democrat. How smart is that? You are saying that you don’t want the opportunity for unity, improved economy and peace in our nation because your candidate lost? You are acting just like your candidate Hillary…a sore looser and not a team player. Shame on you.

That article is also posted on CNN.com. it’s just another reason why Hillary should not be on the tickett.I think in her mind the V.P. spot would be more like a co-Presidency,much like Bush/Cheney or is it really the other way around ?
Obama’s main message has been CHANGE,so why would he continue a dynasty i.e Bush41 to Clinton to
Bush43 then a Obama/Clinton admin.We all want real change.

Appreciation,

All Hillary has done is make women look bad with her nasty ways. She tried to run with the big boys and was out outclassed by Senator Obama at every turn. She didn’t have to pull the race card when she got scared. I was voting for Senator Obama anyway but what little respect I had for her is gone now. Nice to meet another educated African-American female. You are an inspiration to me. I am considering pursuing my PhD in accounting when I finish my master’s in accounting next year because I understand that we need more PhD’s of color (especially in business).

richard said on June 9th, 2008

When is someone in the Democratic party going to show some leadership. Politics is a nasty game, or it used to be. Now the leadership need to step up and get all factions together and make sure Hillary and her people understand what is at stake here. She and all of her supporters will have to remember a few things, like: $25 barrels of oil (2002), the Constitution, Plaintiff takes nothing (Tx Supreme Court since 2003), Back alley abortions, affordable food, 600,000 Iraqis and more than 4000 Americans dead in an uncalled for, contrived war. I’ll even forgive Hillary’s vote as we have bigger fish to fry.

eric said on June 9th, 2008

Well we shall soon see how much my vote and about 18 million others really matter in Novemenber.

khrish said on June 10th, 2008

I have loved reading all the responses above. I too, wondered how all of these people who were elected into to office to represent the people who put them there could stand by and let such evil puke be spewed from the mouth of their candidate and not say a word; just grin and keep agoing. And Bob Jones, running about swinging his arms like a demented windmill begging master to make Sen. Obama put Sen Clinton on his ticket as VP to promote votes and “help him govern”. Can you imagine? Then Tubb-Jones, “she needed some time to meet with her supporters. you needed to give her some time”. Is Sen. Obama had been the loser and had acted such a brat…her mouth would still be yacking. But he is STAR who would have never acted in such a way. He always stood tall and never stooped to their level….”the measure of man” our Sen.Obama. I am so proud. He truly showed change. No matter what, they could never bring him to their level then they started talking about, well is he doesn’t soon act he’s going to look “hen pecked”, weak….and he just proudly held up his head and moved right along as a gentleman and a scholor. It drove the press crazy….like Oprah, I was doing a happy dance. I got some release when he did the “brush off the dirt” thing in his speech in Raleigh, NC and I had to do another “happy dance” Now he stood tall and won HE DID IT HIS WAY! I would be so sad to have this historic moment and have to admit that you were not a Pro Obama American. When you have to say to your future generation, I didn’t stand with him. I was on the other side.

khrish said on June 10th, 2008

Just one more thing to the ones who are so upset over a candidate that they will vote for McCain; you’ll have to live in the world with the rest of us and if by some chance you help him win; you will suffer right along with the rest of us…and those who will stay home before they vote for Sen.Obama…..lesson of old; “when you don’t vote, you do vote”. If we don’t change our path we are going to self-destruct. But we are Americans and we are better than that. We want to be on top.
