Obama and McCain Pass on Unity Appearence

By Pamela Gentry, Senior Political Producer

(July 18, 2008) – It looks like the opportunity for the two presidential rivals to speak to 6,000 minority journalist won’t be taking place at the Journalists of Color convention Unity.

According to Richard Prince’s Journal-ism.com both Sen.’s John McCain and Barack Obama won’t be able to attend because of other commitment.  Obama is scheduled to be in Europe for one of his first international trips since becoming the presumptive Democratic nominee.  McCain is set to speak at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.

Convention planners had hoped to attract the two candidates and feature them as speakers on in Chicago on July 24.  Onica Makwakwa, Unity’s executive director, told Journal-isms, “We’re still working on it. We’re still working on both campaigns. We know there are some changes with the schedules for both of them. We should be able to make an announcement in a few days of what adjustments, if any, we will make.”

It appears invites were extended but neither candidate had committed to attending Unity.   While journalist are usually the link between the candidate and the voter, Nick Charles, Vice President of content for BET.com, pointed out; “They don’t need journalists as they did before: with the Internet, they go straight to the people.”

It’s good that Obama will not appear with flip-flopping McCain.first the Arizona senator castigated Obama for not going to the war areas, now that he has McCain said hits a political ploy,McCain can’t have it both ways because it shows how desperate he is.Then there is the matter of Al-Maliki agreeing with Obama on the 16 month timeline for withdrawl which really shoook Bush/McCain up to the point an Iraqi skesperson back peddled somewhat only too use the word “timeline” in his retraction.Bush said a couple of times that the U.S. will leave when the Iraqis’ want the U.S. out, therefore it’s time too get out.

The best way too lose is to lose graciously.Bush/Cheney/McCain can not and will not realise that this fiasco of a quagmire was a lost cause from the inception. This is why we are in the economic and international mess we are in.Is there anyway too get these guys out now ? Offer them pensions ten times the worth and send them on their way.

    Economic mess, jfffnn?

    Unemployment is at 5.5%

GDP grew at a better than expected 1.0% for the first quarter.

Please explain to me the economic mess, jfffnn.

You must be delusional if you don’t realize the economic mess. High gasoline prices ,High food prices,Mortgage forclosures,Job layoffs and lost.Unemployment is measured By how many people filed jobless claims,if unemployment benefits expire a person without a job can no longer claim, therefore they don’t get counted. In essence unemployment is actually higher than what the numbers say,not too mention UNDER EMPLOYED which equals WORKING POOR. you can be in denial all you want but my advice to you is GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE SAND.

  11. Patrick N. Washington on July 22nd, 2008

jfffnn, my dear friend, my head is certainly not in the sand.

If we were allowed to drill here in America, gas prices would not be so high which causes the price of food to go up.

Subprime mortgages were bound to go under sooner or later. The risks were too high for both lenders and borrowers. This is the natural cycle of economics. No one law, program, policy, or man (Obama, Bush, or McCain) could or should hold up bad business practices.

Besides obvious obfuscation, unemployment is still at an acceptable low rate.

    Patrick
We do agree on mortgages somewhat.but as far as offshore drilling, the oil companies can do so now where it is permitted, but they won’t in order too keep profits high;besides the benefits of off shore drilling will not be realized for another 10 years and all that oil will not come to U.S.markets,China will purchase much of that oil.
It is only a political ploy for McCain too want offshore driliing this election cycle when he was opposed to it for years. He ain’t folling anyone.

  13. Patrick N. Washington on July 23rd, 2008

    jfffnn,

We are in an energy competition against China.

Therefore, we should permit American oil companies to drill everywhere that they are able before gas prices rise to even unacceptable prices.

McCain’s energy policy is more innovative than Obama’s.

McCain will allow more oil drilling, utilize nuclear energy, and even develop wind and solar energy (thanks to T. Boone Pickens).

Obama’s energy policy will not allow domestic drilling and refuse to utilize nuclear energy.

I do not mind a politician being moved by political reason to do what I think is beneficial to the electorate.

jfffnn, my friend, is that not the very essence of a democratic republic?

  14. jfffnn on July 23rd, 2008

    Patrick
The benefits of offshore drilling will not surface for years to come.Sen. McCain was against offshore drilling, now for political reasons he is for it just because of the price of gasoline today.Sen.McCain knows all too well that drilling offshore will not reduce the price anytime soon and thats why It’s called a political ploy;Besides China will be buying much of the oil,so what are the imediate benefits and for who ?

  15. Patrick N. Washington on July 24th, 2008

That is why we should start drilling now so that we can get the benefits as soon as we can. If we had start drilling ten years ago, we would not be paying almost 5 dollars a gallon now. Start drilling now, we will be able to prevent gas from going to 10 dollars a gallon.

In our democratic republic, politicians will do political things for political reasons. I have little to no problem with that. I am pleased that something moved McCain to see the logic of offshore drilling.

    China buying our oil? Indeed.

That is why McCain’s energy policy will start weaning us off of oil. That is what is badly needed.
