Black Republicans Are Scarce at the GOP Convention

(ST.PAUL, MINN) Sept. 3, 2008 – Black Republicans are scarce on the opening day of the Republican National Convention, but those high profile members of the GOP are who in attendance are making the rounds and touting the virtues of the GOP for African Americans

Former Pittsburg Steelers wide-out, Lynn Swann, who ran for governor of Pennsylvania in 2006, told me, more Blacks would be Republican if they compared their conservative values to those of the GOP.  He believes they haven’t examined what the party stands for and therefore aren’t giving the Grand Ole Party a chance.

“Who are you, what do believe in and how you act on that belief, if more Black Americans would ask those questions, they would find the answers in the Republican Party,” Swann said.

The convention this year has only 36 African American delegates, about two percent according to a study by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Research. That’s a mere 1.5 percent of the total 2,380 delegates on the convention floor.  Here in St. Paul the party is witnessing a significant drop in Black delegates compared to 2004, when 167 of the delegates were African American.

David Bositis, a senior political analyst who keeps an eye on the political trends of African American voters, noted the minority delegate count for both conventions.  In contrast, 24 percent of the delegates at the Democratic National Convention were African American, or 1,087 of the more than 4,500 delegates.

Ken Blackwell, former Secretary of State in Ohio, defends his party and his presidential candidate Sen. John McCain’s outreach efforts to Black voters.  “My impression and perception is John McCain has gone where others who have headed up the ticket have not,” he said.

Blackwell cited Sen. McCain’s appearance at the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., anniversary in Memphis and his speeches before the National Urban League and NAACP conventions as proof he was making an effort to reach out to African Americans.  But McCain hasn’t been as available to Black media outlets.

BET News has had a request in for the senator since October 2007, for an interview.  His press office has said his scheduled has not permitted time to make it happen. The request is re-introduced once every month or so, and the most recent e-mail response from Charles Adams, who is with the campaign, says; “Pamela, We will definitely keep you guys in the mix.  Right now we don’t have any availability in the schedule but will certainly let you know if something opens up.  Wish I could give you a better response but that’s where we stand. Thanks”

BET is covering the RNC, while other Black media outlets decided not to because access to top party leaders is limited and interest is slight from the Black community.

Very few African-American voters consider themselves Republican. “This low level of black attachment to the Republican Party is now almost five decades old,” Bositis said.

Candace,

You misunderstood me, no one said that you were from the hood I said talk to people outside the hood. By pesenting your questions to a variety of blacks; your bound to get more results than you’ve been getting. But don’t make the mistake that many have made, do not underestimate black voters. A lot of non-Obama supporters are up in arms because they think that Obama supporters don’t have sense enough to critically analyze the issues from both sides and make an intelligent decision. The same can be said for white folks voting for McCain. I made my decision to support Obama as soon as I found out that he was running for President because I had read both of his books, researched his voting record, his work on the South side of Chicago and his stance on the issues that concern me. I am an informed and educated voter and I have shared my political views many times on this very blog because I choose to so so NOT because I was challenged to do so as you are doing now. I applaud you for pursuing higher education. Please continue to do your homework and go to college that can only strengthen your critical analytical skills.

joyB i agree with everything you have said.. america is more likely to turn to the extreme right towards dictatorship and the groundwork has already been done with the patriot act..the political hypocracy is breathtaking..you have a country that is the in the grips of the forces of change and the forces of sameness and more of it.. seriously its going to get very ugly before the end of this process. i expect that this website will be shut down for the duration of the elections like it last time..in 2004.Americans have to come out this time and vote, especially the young ..it is so important because its going to change the course of history.. choose obama and america will shift to the middle ground ,choose mccain and its worse than more of the same..its that endless war senario i talked about on this very same website 4yrs ago… america will just keep embarking on wars against all mankind .. “to protect herself” ..yeah., right to fill the coffers of already rich, greedy oil executives..What was the iraqi war?. an excercise in public works and private gain.. CAN I SAY HALIBURTON?.disgraceful.!! giving contracts to the businesses of govt officials like that is unethical and immoral. yet these idiots claim the moral high ground.. over what exactly?.America gets away with it because of the SHEER FORCE OF HER ARMY .. thats all.. we all KNOW THE SCORE..BUT NO ONE IS UNDER ANY ILLUSIONS.. i would hate people to jump ship but it looks like it will happen if barack obama doesnt get in this nov..i have watched every presidential race since the mid 70’s as a very curious teenager … This one is different.. this one is going to decide just what type of power america is and how she uses it..

I find Palin to be extremely hypocritical and dangerous. She is risking the health and very lives of those Alaskan children by forcing her religious views. She can not be allowed to bring the mess to the country. Pregnancy is not the worst outcome from unprotected sex! America is supposed to be a melting pot where we all are free to worship as we feel. Who wants a president who forces there religious values on us. Pro-life is based in religion. NOBODY is going to tell me what to do with my body. Not a senile old man and not a pompous baby making machine. McCain and Palin are NOT role models. She gave a good speech, spoke well, took shots at Obama but she did not discuss or clarify her stance on: Healthcare, Education, War and the Economy!!!
BTW: Where is the diversity in the Republican Party?

All I know for sure about Sarah Palin is that she is FERTILE!

Go Obama.

I feel sorry for the college student who is not taking politcs as a subject this one subject you need add to schedule and black History.
The people of color made this nation and the white man stoled it and destroy it for greed and the past is coming back around to knock us on our butt.
Last nite I laugh about the convention because every one who gave a speech talk negative about the other party but they never said anything about how they deserve to be a leader you have to earn leadership it not going to be handle over to you people going to have to realized as long the white stick together they going to keep trying to lead us to hell but alot of us know when we are leading wrong and when we stand up they call us elite we are not elite we are smart and we can play that game they are playing.
Politics is nothing but a game it can be good or bad it according to the person.
I always felt like this How can you tell me something when you not doing it and that with anything.
Palin can not tell me How to Be A Woman,Mother or Wife because she is not doing a good job.
Mccain can not show me what a man should do because he is not the head of his family his wife wear the pants and everythings else.
God state in the bible.
God,Man,Wife, Children and it not following in order I am not voting for anyone is not in order.
Like Obama stated This is not about me it’s about the Country (people).
If you read that bible it will tell you how your household should be run like a government system.
If you can nott run your household how can you run something else.(nation)
Trust me God looking at that and he see alot of disappointing feature.

Republicans don’t give a f**k about nobody but the rich. I am a working class black male getting by paycheck to paycheck. Republicans don’t understand what it’s like to be broke. They don’t understand what it’s like to have the bill collectors constantly ringing your phone all the time all day every day. I had a brother that went to fight in Iraq and by the grace of God he is back home safe. Republicans don’t care about the people in the hood. As far as black republicans, to me a black republican is a Uncle Tom or an Oreo. I don’t care about offending any black republicans I’m just calling it the way I see it. Americans are constantly b**ching and complaining about how high gas prices are and yet a lot of Americans are voting to put the people that are responsible for the problems we are having back in the white house. I encourage not just every black person but every American to go out this November and vote for Obama. I sure as hell will. VOTE BARACK OBAMA 2008!!!

Watching the RNC Convention was like watching a bad comedy show…Sarah Palin was the comedian all she did was tell bad jokes to get a laugh and applause the entire time she was up there.

Obama 08!!!!

Larry Said on

Palin is just another ultra-right wing Republican, born again who passes judgement on the “sinful” until they happen to be in her own family, at which time similar pronouncements from others become “inappropriate and off-limits.” Welcome to the land of Larry Craig and so many other hypocrites with feet of clay. How can anyone be surprised by the “do as I say not as I do” attitude of these holier than thou phonies anymore?

Kendall Said on

Lack of Judgement. The mom allows herself to get pregnant at a risky age and delivers a downs baby. She “teaches” her daughter to “just say no” to sex. On the sexual front, Palin shows very poor judgment. When my daughter learned how to drive I didn’t think “just say no” to accidents was good enough, so I insisted she wear a seat belt too. Just in case. By the way, Palin was in favor of the bridge to nowhere before she was against it. And she kept the money! Now she’s following “quick draw” McCain down the flip flop highway.

Steve Said on

OMG – I cannot believe how nasty you democrats are. Republicans want everyone to live the American Dream. Why do millions of people come here— legally or illegally?? To have the freedom to be successful and make money! Republicans recognize that if Joe Brown or Keisha White work hard for their money— opening a business– expands that business— that Joe and Keisha should reap their rewards. Democrats have created a government gimme free-for-all that really pisses me off. I definitely know that there are a lot of people that need assistance— to give them a HAND UP and not just hand outs is what we need. 3 years after Katrina and 17,000 trailers still being lived in?? GET REAL— I work hard for MY MONEY – and do help out whenever I can. And being Christian does NOT mean judging– it means coping and living the life that is handed to you in a loving, caring and respectful way. Why is it that pro-choice is the acceptable ideal as long as that choice is not life?

Shawn Said on

Steve please you know godd and well the republicans do not want everyone to live the American Dream. The republicans are for the “priviledged few” and everyone else comes last. The republicans are not for the “common man” Thats not true about the Democrats and the “give me free for all” 8 years of Bush America has the highest unemployment rate, home foreclosures, high gas prices(also Bush owns oil). America is in decline electing McCain will be the same Bush presidency and it will get worse. The republican party only represents main stream America and is only out to help “the priviledged few”

Arreba Said on

Wow, I have been watching the RNC everyday; though I am not a republican, I want to know exactly what the republicans are up to. Of course, they are up to their old tricks of resurrecting African American stereotypes…specifically by referring to Obama as a “smooth talker.” Then they ridicule Obama’s experience working with the community. They sounded so contrite, stupid, and homogeneous because politicians have to work with and for the people. They even all look alike to me, with those fake plastic smiles. Then, they panned the camera to this hispanic dude holding a sign that read “Hispanics Love McCain”…but dude was the only hispanic there…what’s up with that?

Candace Said on

Seschris,

You told me to get out of the hood, In order to get out of the hood I would have to be in the hood first.I guess I took your comment more literally.
Of course some have critically analyzed the issues and that’s why they support Obama, but I find many more have not. And I guess you could argue that the same thing can be said about white folk and McCain to a certain extent or just voters in general. I find that to many people vote strictly based on party affiliation or tradition. Many don’t really analyze the issues or their candidate’s stance on the issues or what the causes and effects might be if their candidate implements their position on an issue. That goes for all types of people not just blacks. I feel the major difference between black and white voters is that there normally isn’t an overwhelming majority of white people or any race for that matter except for blacks who vote so monolithically for one party. So I disagree with you when you say that the same can be said about white folks who vote for McCain. How is that true when you have so many white folk voting for Obama? Obama couldn’t have been the democratic nominee on the black vote alone and he wouldn’t be in a dead heat with McCain right now with only African-American support either.Remember Black people are only I think about 12 or 13% of the population.

The main point of my original post was not that Black people don’t think critically about their candidate, as I feel this is true for people of all races not just black. I was more trying to say how voting monolithically with out even looking at both sides hurts black people more than it helps us. In your first post you said that the republicans underestimates the black vote. How come you say that the republican party does this but you don’t imply that the democratic party does this? or were you just referring to this election year and the black turn out for Obama? I personally feel that both parties underestimate the black vote. I mean the democrats don’t have any real reason to take black voters seriously because they already know black voters are a slam dunk come election time and Republicans don’t have to take black voters seriously because they already know that black voters devoutly vote democrat regardless. How does strictly voting for one party decade after decade really solve issues in our community?
Especially when neither party actually says they are for or against issues that concern black voters. The last time a party has actually had a strong platform concerning black issues was the civil rights movement, which was the democratic party. That’s why I made the statement that black people’s political views could be stuck in the 1960’s.So I’m guessing the thing to do is to stick with the party that helped us out nearly 50 years ago.

You said that you made your decision to support for Obama as soon as you found out about him running for president. It’s good that you did your research but I cant help but wonder if you did such in depth research on all the other candidates who was running before you gave Obama your full support? If not than how did you know that Obama was the best candidate for the issues that concerned you?

I was just curious when I asked you about your party affiliation.I didn’t mean it as a challenge so if you felt insulted I apologize.

After watching Sarah Palin stand there and read from the Podium which someone wrote for her, and all of a sudden, she gave the best speech ever….
Give me a freaking break….She made very nasty remarks about Barack Obama, and not one word of truth in it…I am pissed off about that…

She even tried to quote some things Obama had said in his speech…..

You all remember when Jeb Busch the President brother said: The truth is useless. You have to understand this right now. You can’t deposit the truth in a bank. You can’t buy grocieries with the truth. You can’t pay rent with the truth. The truth is a useless commodity that will hang around your neck like a albatross-all the way to the homeless shelter. And if you think that the millions or so people in this country that are really interested in the truth about there government can support people who would tell them the truth, you got another thing coming. Because the millions or so people in this country that are truly interested in the truth don’t have any money.(Shelia Samples)…..

Prelshea Mayo Said on

This is what Sarah Palin said about Barack Obama in her speech….

’some use change to promote a career’,
some use a career to promote change”….

Here’s what Obama said in his speech:

The change we need doesn’t come from Washington,
change comes to Washington.

I think she copied from Obama’s speech…

There’s more things in her speech that sounded like Barack Obama, you get my drift…..

This woman was a Journalist and knows how to speak very well….That doesn’t work with me…OMG….

PEACE!

Candace..I have to co-sign with you on why Blacks vote Democrat. I was raised to believe the bull, and follow the line too. But now, I’m tired of the same ol’ same ol with that . We need to take responsibility for ourselves. We need to have our stuff together regardless of Obama or MCain. They both have made promises that they aren’t going to keep if elected. Everyone should vote according to their personal core set of beliefs and values. Who can you identify with according to that? I’m voting due to party beliefs, not race. Get ready for another Republican in the White House everyone.

GOD FORBID CHERIE, WHAT DID THE LAST ONE DO ?. WHY ARE YOU SO STUPID TO BELIEVE THAT THE REPUBLICANS ARE GOOD AT ANYTHING BUT MAKING WARS AND LINING THEIR OWN POCKETS ON THE PROCEEDS..?. YOU DONT HAVE TO VOTE DEMOCRAT BUT YOU DO HAVE TO LOOK AT THE BIGGER PICTURE.. SO I SAY GET READY FOR A DEMOCRAT THIS NOV… YOU CAN ALWAYS MOVE TO A SOUTH AMERICAN DICTATORSHIP AND FEEL RIGHT AT HOME..
