Black Republicans Are Scarce at the GOP Convention

(ST.PAUL, MINN) Sept. 3, 2008 – Black Republicans are scarce on the opening day of the Republican National Convention, but those high profile members of the GOP are who in attendance are making the rounds and touting the virtues of the GOP for African Americans

Former Pittsburg Steelers wide-out, Lynn Swann, who ran for governor of Pennsylvania in 2006, told me, more Blacks would be Republican if they compared their conservative values to those of the GOP.  He believes they haven’t examined what the party stands for and therefore aren’t giving the Grand Ole Party a chance.

“Who are you, what do believe in and how you act on that belief, if more Black Americans would ask those questions, they would find the answers in the Republican Party,” Swann said.

The convention this year has only 36 African American delegates, about two percent according to a study by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Research. That’s a mere 1.5 percent of the total 2,380 delegates on the convention floor.  Here in St. Paul the party is witnessing a significant drop in Black delegates compared to 2004, when 167 of the delegates were African American.

David Bositis, a senior political analyst who keeps an eye on the political trends of African American voters, noted the minority delegate count for both conventions.  In contrast, 24 percent of the delegates at the Democratic National Convention were African American, or 1,087 of the more than 4,500 delegates.

Ken Blackwell, former Secretary of State in Ohio, defends his party and his presidential candidate Sen. John McCain’s outreach efforts to Black voters.  “My impression and perception is John McCain has gone where others who have headed up the ticket have not,” he said.

Blackwell cited Sen. McCain’s appearance at the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., anniversary in Memphis and his speeches before the National Urban League and NAACP conventions as proof he was making an effort to reach out to African Americans.  But McCain hasn’t been as available to Black media outlets.

BET News has had a request in for the senator since October 2007, for an interview.  His press office has said his scheduled has not permitted time to make it happen. The request is re-introduced once every month or so, and the most recent e-mail response from Charles Adams, who is with the campaign, says; “Pamela, We will definitely keep you guys in the mix.  Right now we don’t have any availability in the schedule but will certainly let you know if something opens up.  Wish I could give you a better response but that’s where we stand. Thanks”

BET is covering the RNC, while other Black media outlets decided not to because access to top party leaders is limited and interest is slight from the Black community.

Very few African-American voters consider themselves Republican. “This low level of black attachment to the Republican Party is now almost five decades old,” Bositis said.

Patrick, dont put down community organizers, Palin, ran the PTA, at her childrens school, So when you put down community organizers you put down the PTA.,

This woman, Palin, was elected to a small town of 5,000, people., has been governor for a 1 and a half., has never been outside of the U.S., and is a heartbeat away from the Presidency., Oh and by the way, she lets her daughter have sex under her roof.,

She’s probably one of those parents that says, I would rather my child do their unmoral deeds (have sex, drink, do drugs), in my house, rather than them do them in the street.,,,,,What a hypocrite!!!

Does anybody notice how Ms. Gentry is looking at Lynn “loser” Swann ? She is looking at him like she is thinking YOU ARE FULL OF SHYT !!!

When I look at the ticket of McCain-Palin, I see a old guy who was a playboy, who left his first wife after she stood by him, raising his children, until his release as a POW. I see a VP pick who gave birth a mere eight months after eloping, whose husband has had trouble with the concept of a designated driver, and whose pregnant 17-year-old daughter is unmarried.
But what really irritates me is not this explicit hypocrisy. It is that the Christian Right is positively jubilant over the fact that Sarah Palin’s daughter intends to keep the baby and get married, yet conservatives have helped to ensure that few young people have that as a viable option.

The life prospects of a teenage couple with a child and only high school degrees have collapsed in this modern economy. Things that might have prevented this deterioration — such as support for unionism, fair trade policies, a minimum wage that constitutes a living wage and universal health care — have all been anathema to the Republican Party.

Bristol Palin will do fine, of course, with Mom’s stature and money. Others are not so lucky.

Sarah Palin:

Why is she a “rock star”? Remember 3 weeks ago when the right ripped Obama calling him the same? Palin gave an arrogant speech (again written by others), she NEVER sold the plane on e-bay by the way, it was sold by a broker to Larry Reynolds of Valdez, AK. for 2.1 mil. ($300,000 below it’s value) Mr. Reynold’s was also a huge campaign contributor to Mrs. Palin. Funny that he got such a good deal; makes you wonder why the “liberal” media hasn’t covered that one (probably because there is no liberal media). Americans should wake up and smell what’s being shoveled. You are being force fed advertising slogans by the right (catchy, but with no real substance) and you are eating it up. The fact remains that if McCain and Palin get into the white house, we won’t even recognize this country in 4 years, I’ll be in New Zealand, a place where people make up there own minds, and don’t allow others to tell them what’s best….

ABOUT SARAH- PLEASE WAKE UP AMERICA. RESEARCH, READ ASK QUESTIONS!!!

Dear Friends,

So many people have asked me about what I know about Sarah Palin in the last 2 days that I decided to write something up . . .

Basically, Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton have only 2 things in common: their gender and their good looks.

You have my permission to forward this to your friends/email contacts with my name and email address attached, but please do not post it on any websites, as there are too many kooks out there . . .

Thanks,
Anne

ABOUT SARAH PALIN

I am a resident of Wasilla, Alaska. I have known Sarah since 1992. Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a first-name basis. Our children have attended the same schools. Her father was my child’s favorite substitute teacher. I also am on a first name basis with her parents and mother-in-law. I attended more City Council meetings during her administration than about 99% of the residents of the city.

She is enormously popular; in every way she’s like the most popular girl in middle school. Even men who think she is a poor choice and won’t vote for her can’t quit smiling when talking about her because she is a ‘babe’.

It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She kept her most recent pregnancy a secret from her children and parents for seven months.

She is ‘pro-life’. She recently gave birth to a Down’s syndrome baby. There is no cover-up involved, here; Trig is her baby.

She is energetic and hardworking. She regularly worked out at the gym.

She is savvy. She doesn’t take positions; she just ‘puts things out there’ and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit.

Her husband works a union job on the North Slope for BP and is a champion snowmobile racer. Todd Palin’s kind of job is highly sought-after because of the schedule and high pay. He arranges his work schedule so he can fish for salmon in Bristol Bay for a month or so in summer, but by no stretch of the imagination is fishing their major source of income. Nor has her life-style ever been anything like that of native Alaskans.

Sarah and her whole family are avid hunters.

She’s smart.

Her experience is as mayor of a city with a population of about 5,000 (at the time), and less than 2 years as governor of a state with about 670,000 residents.

During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had given rise to a recall campaign.

Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a ‘fiscal conservative’. During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they benefited residents.

The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration weren’t enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece of property that the City didn’t even have clear title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs later–to the delight of the lawyers involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5m for road projects that could have been done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing.

While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her office redecorated more than once.

These are small numbers, but Wasilla is a very small city.

As an oil producer, the high price of oil has created a budget surplus in Alaska. Rather than invest this surplus in technology that will make us energy independent and increase efficiency, as Governor she proposed distribution of this surplus to every individual in the state.

In this time of record state revenues and budget surpluses, she recommended that the state borrow/bond for road projects, even while she proposed distribution of surplus state revenues: spend today’s surplus, borrow for needs.

She’s not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideas or compromise. As Mayor, she fought ideas that weren’t generated by her or her staff. Ideas weren’t evaluated on their merits, but on the basis of who proposed them.

While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from the library some books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin’s attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew her termination letter. People who fought her attempt to oust the Librarian are on her enemies list to this day.

Sarah complained about the ‘old boy’s club’ when she first ran for Mayor, so what did she bring Wasilla? A new set of ‘old boys’. Palin fired most of the experienced staff she inherited. At the City and as Governor she hired or elevated new, inexperienced, obscure people, creating a staff totally dependent on her for their jobs and eternally grateful and fiercely loyal–loyal to the point of abusing their power to further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged happened in the case of pressuring the State’s top cop (see below).

As Mayor, Sarah fired Wasilla’s Police Chief because he ‘intimidated’ her, she told the press. As Governor, her recent firing of Alaska’s top cop has the ring of familiarity about it. He served at her pleasure and she had every legal right to fire him, but it’s pretty clear that an important factor in her decision to fire him was because he wouldn’t fire her sister’s ex-husband, a State Trooper. Under investigation for abuse of power, she has had to admit that more than 2 dozen contacts were made between her staff and family to the person that she later fired, pressuring him to fire her ex-brother-in-law. She tried to replace the man she fired with a man who she knew had been reprimanded for sexual harassment; when this caused a public furor, she withdrew her support.

She has bitten the hand of every person who extended theirs to her in help. The City Council person who personally escorted her around town introducing her to voters when she first ran for Wasilla City Council became one of her first targets when she was later elected Mayor. She abruptly fired her loyal City Administrator; even people who didn’t like the guy were stunned by this ruthlessness.

Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from saying anything publicly about her.

When then-Governor Murkowski was handing out political plums, Sarah got the best, Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission: one of the few jobs not in Juneau and one of the best paid. She had no background in oil &gas issues. Within months of scoring this great job which paid $122,400/yr, she was complaining in the press about the high salary. I was told that she hated that job: the commute, the structured hours, the work. Sarah became aware that a member of this Commission (who was also the State Chair of the Republican Party) engaged in unethical behavior on the job. In a gutsy move which some undoubtedly cautioned her could be political suicide, Sarah solved all her problems in one fell swoop: got out of the job she hated and garnered gobs of media attention as the patron saint of ethics and as a gutsy fighter against the ‘old boys’ club’ when she dramatically quit, exposing this man’s ethics violations (for which he was fined).

As Mayor, she had her hand stuck out as far as anyone for pork from Senator Ted Stevens. Lately, she has castigated his pork-barrel politics and publicly humiliated him. She only opposed the ‘bridge to nowhere’ after it became clear that it would be unwise not to.

As Governor, she gave the Legislature no direction and budget guidelines, then made a big grandstand display of line-item vetoing projects, calling them pork. Public outcry and further legislative action restored most of these projects–which had been vetoed simply because she was not aware of their importance–but with the unobservant she had gained a reputation as ‘anti-pork’.

She is solidly Republican: no political maverick. The State party leaders hate her because she has bit them in the back and humiliated them. Other members of the party object to her self-description as a fiscal conservative.

Around Wasilla there are people who went to high school with Sarah. They call her ‘Sarah Barracuda’ because of her unbridled ambition and predatory ruthlessness. Before she became so powerful, very ugly stories circulated around town about shenanigans she pulled to be made point guard on the high school basketball team. When Sarah’s mother-in-law, a highly respected member of the community and experienced manager, ran for Mayor, Sarah refused to endorse her.

As Governor, she stepped outside of the box and put together of package of legislation known as ‘AGIA’ that forced the oil companies to march to the beat of her drum.

Like most Alaskans, she favors drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. She has questioned if the loss of sea ice is linked to global warming. She campaigned ‘as a private citizen’ against a state initiaitive that would have either a) protected salmon streams from pollution from mines, or b) tied up in the courts all mining in the state (depending on who you listen to). She has pushed the State’s lawsuit against the Dept. of the Interior’s decision to list polar bears as threatened species.

McCain is the oldest person to ever run for President; Sarah will be a heartbeat away from being President.

There has to be literally millions of Americans who are more knowledgeable and experienced than she.

However, there’s a lot of people who have underestimated her and are regretting it.

CLAIM VS FACT
* ‘Hockey mom’: true for a few years

* ‘PTA mom’: true years ago when her first-born was in elementary school, not since

* ‘NRA supporter’: absolutely true

* social conservative: mixed. Opposes gay marriage, BUT vetoed a bill that would have denied benefits to employees in same-sex relationships (said she did this because it was unconsitutional).

* pro-creationism: mixed. Supports it, BUT did nothing as Governor to promote it.

* ‘Pro-life’: mixed. Knowingly gave birth to a Down’s syndrome baby BUT declined to call a special legislative session on some pro-life legislation

* ‘Experienced’: Some high schools have more students than Wasilla has residents. Many cities have more residents than the state of Alaska. No legislative experience other than City Council. Little hands-on supervisory or managerial experience; needed help of a city administrator to run town of about 5,000.

* political maverick: not at all

* gutsy: absolutely!

* open &transparent: ??? Good at keeping secrets. Not good at explaining actions.

* has a developed philosophy of public policy: no

* ‘a Greenie’: no. Turned Wasilla into a wasteland of big box stores and disconnected parking lots. Is pro-drilling off-shore and in ANWR.

* fiscal conservative: not by my definition!

* pro-infrastructure: No. Promoted a sports complex and park in a city without a sewage treatment plant or storm drainage system. Built streets to early 20th century standards.

* pro-tax relief: Lowered taxes for businesses, increased tax burden on residents

* pro-small government: No. Oversaw greatest expansion of city government in Wasilla’s history.

* pro-labor/pro-union. No. Just because her husband works union doesn’t make her pro-labor. I have seen nothing to support any claim that she is pro-labor/pro-union.

WHY AM I WRITING THIS?

First, I have long believed in the importance of being an informed voter. I am a voter registrar. For 10 years I put on student voting programs in the schools. If you google my name (Anne Kilkenny Alaska), you will find references to my participation in local government, education, and PTA/parent organizations.

Secondly, I’ve always operated in the belief that ‘Bad things happen when good people stay silent’. Few people know as much as I do because few have gone to as many City Council meetings.

Third, I am just a housewife. I don’t have a job she can bump me out of. I don’t belong to any organization that she can hurt. But, I am no fool; she is immensely popular here, and it is likely that this will cost me somehow in the future: that’s life.

Fourth, she has hated me since back in 1996, when I was one of the 100 or so people who rallied to support the City Librarian against Sarah’s attempt at censorship.

Fifth, I looked around and realized that everybody else was afraid to say anything because they were somehow vulnerable.

CAVEATS
I am not a statistician. I developed the numbers for the increase in spending &taxation 2 years ago (when Palin was running for Governor) from information supplied to me by the Finance Director of the City of Wasilla, and I can’t recall exactly what I adjusted for: did I adjust for inflation? for population increases? Right now, it is impossible for a private person to get any info out of City Hall — they are swamped. So I can’t verify my numbers.

You may have noticed that there are various numbers circulating for the population of Wasilla, ranging from my ‘about 5,000?, up to 9,000. The day Palin’s selection was announced a city official told me that the current population is about 7,000. The official 2000 census count was 5,460. I have used about 5,000 because Palin was Mayor from 1996 to 2002, and the city was growing rapidly in the mid-90’s.

The Trurth,

First of all , You seem to assume that I blindly follow Sarah Palin. Have you even read my posts? Please, I would like you to go back and try and find anything in my posts that say anything about me following Sarah Palin in any way. I have never even mentioned her so I don’t know why you put my name in this post. I’m guessing you think I follow Sarah palin because you assume that I’ am a republican. If so,again go back in my posts and try and find where I say I’m a republican or even mention who I’m voting for. So seriously, I would appreciate it if you’d stop assuming things. Just because I don’t devoutly follow the democrats and I don’t think of Obama as the Messiah doesn’t mean I’m republican or that i’m going to vote for the McCain/palin ticket. So again, please read before you post.

Seconed, What you just gave was an email. I don’t know if this is a chain email or real email. It doesn’t really matter considering the fact that 90% of emails dealing with politics and candidates are a bunch of B.S. used to spread vicious lies and rumors. I have read Crazy emails on Obama which was a bunch of B.S. too, used to smear him (Does that mean I’m in DENIAL about Obama since I don’t believe those emails either). So this email doesn’t really prove much.

Third, Even though that most likely a lot of what’s in this email is untrue or distorted in some way. I actually like some of Palins positions that “anne” claims to be true in this email, I find some of them actually make me think better of her than what I thought before.

Fourth, there are a few so called facts in here that are seriously distorted or just flat out untrue.

1) She did not fire the liberian for the reasons stated in this email. Actually, Palin never asked that books be banned; no books were actually banned; and many of the books on the list that Palin supposedly wanted to censor weren’t even in print at the time, proving that the list is a fabrication. The librarian was fired, but was told only that Palin felt she didn’t support her. She was re-hired the next day. The librarian never claimed that Palin threatened outright to fire her for refusing to ban books.( I had researched this and found out it was all a rumor, you can research it yourself but I got this information from FactCheck.org)

2)As for all the people she supposedly fired. Governors are allowed to do that and many of them do this so they can bring in their own supporters. This is nothing out of the ordinary.Palin did ask Wasilla’s department heads to turn in their resignations, in October 1996. Palin described the requests as a loyalty test and allowed all of them (except one, whose department she was eliminating) to retain their positions. Like I said, Sarah Palin is not the first or the only one to do this.

3) The whole police and her sister situation. It’s true she’s under investigation but Anne fails to mention that the police she wanted fired threatened her family a numerous amount of times and had a couple of violations. But anyway that’s why she’s being investigated,so we can find out the truth other than what’s in this email. As of right now I personally don’t feel this is a huge problem. If you do, then fine, just don’t vote for her.

4) Anne in this email makes it sound like ratting out corrupt members of your own party or that changing your mind on a worthless project(bridge to no where) is a bad thing. Ummmm…I have to disagree. Standing up to unethical behavior even if it’s in your own party is a good thing not a bad thing.I care more about correcting the wrong than some corrupt politician who gets humiliated. .She may be Republican but that Doesn’t mean she’s not a maverick when push comes to shove.

5) This email is supposedly from someone who is hated by Sarah Palin. Did it ever occur to you that maybe Anne isn’t Sarah Palin’s biggest fan either. So I can’t help but be skeptical about some of this information, especially the claims that basically imply that she’s irrational, unfair, and dominating. Besides she still has I think an 80% approval rating.

But anyway, thanks for trying to give me some information but I already researched a lot of this stuff, Some of it is either untrue or I’m just not concerned about.Judging by your post you seem to really have a problem with her or don’t think she’s a good VP pick, What are your concerns about her? Is it the stuff you read in this email? Nonetheless I think it’s good that you are doing research, hopefully it’s not as limited or as one sided as what you posted.I hope emails aren’t your only source.

TheTruth Said on

Candace,

True research involves gathering several sources of information to reach a conclusion. I’ve been at this a long time so I’ve got that area covered. Thanks. Your personal opinions don’t mitigate the value of the data included in the document. I never presented it as my personal opinion and the author is open to research by google. Your judgment about me is totally incorrect and truly doesn’t matter. I was providing balance to some of the Obama bashing I’ve seen and whether you think it’s true or not is irrelevant to me as they are not my words. I could have cut out what I didn’t like or agree with but I presented the document in tact for people to make their own judgment and research further. That’s what intelligent independent thinkers do; research further without personal judgement. I didn’t have time to read your rather lengthy personal evaluation of the document; I’m sure it was just your opinion.

Earl Said on

The Truth,

Thanks for the useful information on Sarah Palin. It helps to hear from someone who knows her. Especially when she won’t give interviews only repeats the same convention speech over and over. The fact that the writer isn’t anonymous says a lot about the validity of the info. Also, some of this has been repeated in mainstream news as well.

Candace Said on

The Truth,

If you don’t care about what I think of the email and my opinions are irrelevant than why did you put my name in your post? You said you didn’t read my lengthy reply…well maybe that’s the problem, that gives me a clue as to why you posted to me in the first place.
How have i judged you? I simply made assumptions about why you posted to me based on the fact that you had my name in your post and then wrote “DO YOUR RESEARCH ON SARAH PALIN BEFORE YOU BLINDLY ACCEPT HER AS A GOOD VP PICK!!!”. TYou also implied that I was in DENIAL and then you wrote “DO SOME REAL RESEARCH ABOUT YOUR NEW LIP STICK WEARING SAVIOR! GET OUT OF DENIAL AND OPEN YOUR MINDS TO THE TRUTH.” All I did was ask what your concerns were on Sarah Palin. that is not judging you.

Basically,if you’re going to put someones name in your posts and make assumptions about them than it might help you to actually read what they are saying first. That’s what intelligent independent thinkers do;you know research further without personal judgment as you say. That doesn’t only apply to politics you know.

The Truth Said on

Candace,

This is my last response to what is rapidly becoming a trivial exchange. I put your name on that because your previous remarks. However, when I saw the length of your last post I decided not to read it especially when I saw that you were refuting and dissecting the Anne Kilkenny document. I have no desire to debate someone else’s words. Again as an intelligent independent thinker I felt that was the best option. I don’t know if your rebuttals to the document are valid or not and neither do I care. I merely presented the information that was presented to me.
