Gov. Sarah Palin addresses the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn. - Sept. 3, 2008 (AP)By Pamela Gentry, Senior Political Producer

(ST. PAUL, Minn.) Sept. 4, 2008 – Republicans made history Wednesday night when they nominated the oldest first-time presidential candidate in history, 72-year-old Sen. John McCain, and their party’s first woman vice presidential candidate, 44-year-old Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Delivering her speech in the national prime-time spotlight, Palin attacked her Democratic rivals as Washington insiders, out of touch and incapable of bringing about change. Palin promised that it would be she and McCain who would bring “real change” to Washington.

The fired-up crowd at the Xcell Center repeatedly interrupted Palin with cheers and uproarious standing ovations throughout her speech.

Palin, who has a special-needs son of her own, couched her party as the one that cares about such children, understands the difficulty of parenting a child out of wedlock and what it means to keep American safe amid the threats of global terrorism.

“Victory in Iraq is finally in sight; he wants to forfeit,” Palin said of Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama.

“Al-Qaida terrorists still plot to inflict catastrophic harm on America; he’s worried that someone won’t read them their rights.

“Government is too big; he wants to grow it.”

The crowd ate it up.

But while the speech was relentless in its assault on Obama, it offered little in the way of what a Republican administration would do to define the difference.

Palin’s speech was one of  two highlights for the relatively lackluster convention so far. Delegates also lined up for a roll call of the states to nominate their  presidential pick Arizona senator McCain.

As Palin spoke, network cameras seemed transfixed  on the vice presidential candidate’s 17-year-old, unmarried, pregnant daughter, Bristol, who held hands with her 18-year-old boyfriend, Levi Johnson.  Johnson the self-proclaimed “red-neck” hockey player, looked tense and uncomfortable throughout the speech.

“Our family has the same ups and downs as any other, the same challenges and the same joys,” Palin said, after introducing her family.

She saved the barbs for Obama. “In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers, and then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change,” she said.

While her speech was filled with tough talk and delivered well to a friendly crowd, the next test will be her first encounter with the national press corps and her first debate with Democratic vice presidential nominee Sen. Joe Biden.

John,
Respect your service and all. Former Naval officer myself, now Senior VP to a Law FIrm. Yet you have to be kidding. This is whether a white unqualified right wing female can discredit a educated young black man. Thats it. Thats why they got her. To through the mortar fire. Shes no more qualified than a college LT leading a SATCOM command. Ive been to Alaska, stationed there. Alaska Governor does not even have control of the National Guard…that is a Fact. I make over six figures, but i know and you know that didnt happen without getting rid of some of the sterotypes Palin,MCCain,Bush,ROVE and GOP are trying hard to bring back on Obama.

Garvin Said on

My Grand ma use to tell me that a Black person needs to prove that he is not just equal to a white man, but rather we need to prove that we are over qualified and superior to the white opponent, because in the eyes of white folks, a homeless uneducated white man only needs to bathe, shave, and put on a suit, and he can run for president. For this unexperienced, selfish, uninvolved white woman to say that Barack Obama is not experienced to lead America is evidence of her lack of sophistication, a hall mark of backwood racist.

Fred Said on

Wow, how racist can we get? Let’s forget black/white and look at the person. Of course I’m kidding – this could never happen. As much as we throw down that claim, we are just as bad or worse. How nad did Bill Cosby get hammered when he told us to pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps?
Anyhow, I wanted to see if someone could help me with something. I keep seeing comments about the GOP being hard on working Americans and the Dems are much friendlier; well, what, exactly, is a “working American”? I make a good living, maybe even upper class by some standards, but I work for it. I’m not trying to gloat, anything can change at anytime. My point it that we have folks in this country that are highly skilled and make a lot of money for what they do, but they are working Americans too! Don’t punish me for successful. We should all pay our fair share, but to me fair is proportionally equal. I’m a moderate. I side with the Dems on some things and the GOP on others. Neither party is right on everything those of you that vote and straight party ticket, either right or left, are fools.
Speaking of fair, why isn’t BET airing the RNC as it did with the DNC? All of this bias is turing me away fast.

It is unfortunate that now presidential elections are a little more than a popularity context. Everything seems to be ‘cleverly’ (I use that word very loosely) staged. Take for instance Gov. Palin’s daughter holding her little brother with a blanket covering her stomach, while not covering the child at all. (I am not judging this young woman, because regardless of her circumstances, every birth is a blessing. I am pretty sure that the ‘handlers’ made a strong suggestion that she use the blanket as a camouflage. Sen. Obama stated that family was off limits, and by that very statement shows his class. Sarcasm is funny if you subscribe to the mindset of the one being sarcastic. I found Gov. Palin’s speech well orchestrated, sarcastic and blatantly staged. My biggest question is, HOW CAN SHE compare herself as Vice President to Sen. Obama as President. Without going too far, lets just start with EDUCATION, and end with the question, when did changing your community for the better become bad. Change should start with those closest to you–your family, your community and your country. Maybe if Gov. Palin subscribed to this train of thought, her daughter would not be obviously ‘forced’ to marry a young man that clearly stated that he was a _______ red neck who does not want children on his my space. At any rate, I think people want to believe what they want to believe whether it is the truth or not, if it supports some inkling of their issues or concerns.

My the way, there are thousands of handicapped children being raised by their parents, and specifically single mothers. Can you imagine the praise you could give a single mother of a mentally of physically handicapped child, who does not have the financial resources that the Palins have. Surely, that is not the qualification for VP. By the way conservative repubs, one more question. What is the difference between Brittany Spears’ 16 year old sister’s pregnancy and Gov. Palin’s daughter’s? The answer is “a pit bull with lipstick”. By the way that is a very old joke. Please don’t be disillustioned by thinking that Gov. Palin is that witty, or smart to come up with that lipstick statement.

One more thing why not give Sen. Obama his props or respect by referring to him as Senator, just as one should for Governor Palin.

I think that the Pharisees are our modern day Republicans– let’s be the judge and jury for the world. Let’s pray loudly and eloquently so others will think we are pious. Let’s judge those that are different from us, rather than love them. I believe that Jesus was perceived as a Liberal when he walked this earth as a man. Believe it or not Jesus was quite concerned for those that were poor, disadvantaged and lost. Remember Repubs you don’t have the cornerstone on Christianity. I ask for forgiveness on a daily basis, not because I am a Democrat, but because I am not perfect and simply, because I am human.

I pray that we don’t forget that our responsibility is pray for whomever is elected President that God will bless him with the physical, emotional and more importantly spiritual ability to govern this country.

GOD BLESS AMERICA and our PRESIDENT, even President Bush.

Can we just agree to disagree.

John McCain is doing a wonderful job telling us to fight for America. Unlike that antiamerican global socialist Barack Hussein Obama who has terrorists as friends and on his campaign.

Your Barack Hussein Obama cannot vote yes or no but voted present 130 times in the Illinois state senate.

Barack Hussein Obama will nt stand up against Islamofascism.

Barack Hussein Obama is a tax-hiker that does not have any sufficient experience as anyhting. What is a community organizer? Someone that spends his whole day walking and talking to people because he could not get a real job.

Barack Hussein Obama wants to raise taxes and openly lied about the effects of his tax policy. When you raise taxes on corporations, that will effect everyone that does business with that corporation from consumers to employees.

Barack Hussein Obama’s universal healthcare scheme will force every American in government-run health system.

How the world are we going to pay for that? Do not tell me that leaving Iraq will magicly pay for universal healthcare because it will not.

Barack Hussein Obama, the great one, are signing checks that we cannot pay for. We are going to have to pay for all his new 850 billion dollars worth of new government spending.

Obamacrats are avaricious that will like to plunder the public treasury to spend for every type of welfare program.

Obamacare will bankrupt America and increase the debt enormously.

Barack Hussein Obama does not want to drill in America.

Obamamania is a cult that is determined on tearing this nation apart by race and class warfare.

You Obamacrats are full of so much hatred for President Bush and this nation that you are willing to villify a war hero like John McCain and a Christian woman like Sarah Palin to coronate a green wide-eyed rookie like Barack Hussein Obama, a radical socialist pacifist that is not willing to stand up for American against our enemies.

NOBAMA 2008!!!

Country First!!!

McCain-Palin 2008!!!

can someone please tell me where is the victory in Iraq? Did we every find the weapons of mass destruction? How can McCain and Palin change the things that he was in agreement with Bush? Not once have the republicans spoke about helping people obtain health insurance or making it afforable for everyone. I have not heard them speak about bring our well paying jobs back to the US. If McCain and the republicans were able and wanted to do that, why hasnt it been done? McCain is too old to be the president of the US and Palin has no experience. I would have respected McCain if he would have chosen a woman in the republican party that was qualified for the job. He just picked a woman because he felt that women would choose her just based on her sex. This is a woman that has a family with serious issues that need to be addressed. How can she tell others about families when she has a pregnant teenage daughter. Even if the daughter marries the father, who will support them? Will the daughter finish high school and then college? I see another marriage ending in 1 year. She has young children that she need to take care of. I find it so sad that people are talking so negative of Obama and think that this woman who only had negative things to say about him after he said that the family should not be involved. She comes across as a crazy, loud mouth woman.

When all the dust settles, Palin did what she came to do create a disturbance with all her snipes against Obama and personal family drama. She is merely a diversion designed to distract Americans from noticing that McCain can not deal with the real issues and has NOTHING worthwhile to say and the working class.

I was proud and very happy for watching the Democratic National Convention. It was uplifting and inform on the issues that American is dealing with at this time..Barack Obama was very honest and open with his ideas for running are country , when he is elected. I gave the same couresty to watch the Republicans National Convention. I watch John Mccain he was boring, and at times during his speech he was not convincing in what he was telling the less then full convention floor ,He is out of touch with the millions of people who he is trying to win the vote. John Mccain is a politics who has forgot about the little people of this world. As for his running mate Sarah Palin doesn,t have the leadership that is required to running are country into the next four years. Where is her experience on foreign policy, where is her experience dealing with various issues such as gobal isssues, world trades. As for the Republican National Convention it was a totally waste of time watching the convention I myself was not inform or uplifting , it was some many negative and totally bad remarks made against the Democratic National Convention, and I was applaud. John Mccain and Sarah Palin has nothing new to offer America, but Barack Obama and Joe Biden has a plan that will work if America really does what a change.

Fred,
If you really want to see racism go to some of the other news stations blogs. And that bootstraps mess is getting REAL old. Anyway, the republicans are not addressing issues that working class people care about (gas prices, mortgage crisis, health care, education, etc…). How are you being punished for being successful? And who are you to tell anybody that the way they vote makes them a fool?

pernell Said on

Comment to Anita I would like to know where you live cause who ever get,s in the Oval office is going to raise taxes. My question is should the middle class and lower class taxes payer. Be hailed accountable for carrying the pay burden for this country or such the upper class be accountable for paying their share of taxes. When Major Corporation get a tax break when they take are jobs over seas , and give them to worker,s their and not pay them the same benefits they pay are worker,s here.

Concerned Said on

I am a registered Democrat. Unlike some democrats I don’t feel obligated to vote democrat at every election. I weigh the candidates stance on the issues and I decide who speaks to my concerns. This election I will be voting for Obama and nothing the republican party has said has changed that yet. Sarah Palin has made me more certain of my choice. McCain’s political views and judgement make me sad for America and where he would lead us.

Sarah Palins’ speech sound like my coworkers and me talking about politics( Don’t know nothing, very inmature, trying to get into the debate ). We have already heard those nasty words that came from her mouth. I can tell that Sarah Palin has never been on stage before.

I don’t usually blog, but after reading these very passionate comments I had to weigh in with my opinion. Although, I made up my mind in January to vote for Barack Obama, I keep abreast of what’s going on with the Republicans. After watching both conventions, I have come to the conclusion that the Republicans are desperate and John McCain’s cavalier choice of a running mate confirms that. The RNC was just one big bash Obama and try to sell Palin fest. I respect McCain’s service and sacrifice for this country, but being a POW does not make one an expert on foreign policy. In fact, I have read articles and heard McCain state from his own lips that he doesn’t know a lot about foreign policy or the economy. This is why the Republicans spent the whole week focusing on everything execpt the issues. The fact that they had to spend a good deal of their time selling Palin also took the attention away from addressing the issues. Maybe that was intentional. John McCain has demonstrated already, with his first major decision as a presidential nominee, his poor judgement in choosing a controversial running mate and not getting all the necessary facts before making a decision. He actually had a longer time than Obama to properly vet and select a running mate, yet he still made a rushed decision because he needed to do soemthing to make himself more appealing and try to live up to his image as a maverick. Well I don’t know about the rest of you, but the last thing this country needs is a loose cannon maverick who admits he doesn’t have knowledge about the issues and makes decisions at the last minute with minial information being our president. The Obama-Biden ticket is balanced and it seems like the two will compliment each other well. Obama’s gift for organizing and bringing people together will prove beneficial in repairing our international relationships and developing new ones. Biden’s foreign policy experience will be beneficial to improving these relationships as well, not to mention what his expertise will do to aid in ending the war in Iraq and focusing more on Afganistan. Obama’s ability to bring people together will also aid in getting Congress to work together more effectively to get bills passed that will help all of us. My plea to everyone out there is to vote this Novemeber and don’t forget about the mess the Republicans have made of this country. In my opinion, they have not proven they are worthy of another term in the White House.

I am annoyed that the media is hyping up the few days of the RNC nonsense. What they failed to show us all the prostesters that was going on behind the scenes. McCain McFake reminded me so much of Ronald Reagan when I saw snippets of him on the news. Did you all ever read the book on Reagonomics? We do not need 4 more years of their mess. Our pockets are bleeding. We are losing our homes and everything has gone sky high.
