(ST. PAUL, Minn.) Sept. 4, 2008 – Republicans made history Wednesday night when they nominated the oldest first-time presidential candidate in history, 72-year-old Sen. John McCain, and their party’s first woman vice presidential candidate, 44-year-old Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
Delivering her speech in the national prime-time spotlight, Palin attacked her Democratic rivals as Washington insiders, out of touch and incapable of bringing about change. Palin promised that it would be she and McCain who would bring “real change” to Washington.
The fired-up crowd at the Xcell Center repeatedly interrupted Palin with cheers and uproarious standing ovations throughout her speech.
Palin, who has a special-needs son of her own, couched her party as the one that cares about such children, understands the difficulty of parenting a child out of wedlock and what it means to keep American safe amid the threats of global terrorism.
“Victory in Iraq is finally in sight; he wants to forfeit,” Palin said of Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama.
“Al-Qaida terrorists still plot to inflict catastrophic harm on America; he’s worried that someone won’t read them their rights.
“Government is too big; he wants to grow it.”
The crowd ate it up.
But while the speech was relentless in its assault on Obama, it offered little in the way of what a Republican administration would do to define the difference.
Palin’s speech was one of two highlights for the relatively lackluster convention so far. Delegates also lined up for a roll call of the states to nominate their presidential pick Arizona senator McCain.
As Palin spoke, network cameras seemed transfixed on the vice presidential candidate’s 17-year-old, unmarried, pregnant daughter, Bristol, who held hands with her 18-year-old boyfriend, Levi Johnson. Johnson the self-proclaimed “red-neck” hockey player, looked tense and uncomfortable throughout the speech.
“Our family has the same ups and downs as any other, the same challenges and the same joys,” Palin said, after introducing her family.
She saved the barbs for Obama. “In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers, and then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change,” she said.
While her speech was filled with tough talk and delivered well to a friendly crowd, the next test will be her first encounter with the national press corps and her first debate with Democratic vice presidential nominee Sen. Joe Biden.

we all know that Palin, was a necessary for the ticket to at least have a fighting chance come November. I was not impressed in the least with her pre-written speech that she delivered like a person who had been studying someone else’s words for a few days. I will say although she delivered the republican rhetoric with ease some of her message was a little hypocritical I don’t understand how she in her limited experience can say that Obama has none. Everyone on here better be registered to vote. and if you are please make sure all of your friends or and if they are keep spereading the word register and vote we can’t win if we don’t have a voice 11-4-08…. OBAMA/Biden all the way…..
My God, this woman is busy.
AIP (Alaska Ind. Party)gate
Babygate
Troopergate
More firings and abuse of powergate
Bristolgate
head of 527 Bridge to Nowheregate
Lobbyists tied to Abermoffgate
NOW, she has a CAR WASH gate, yup, that’s right! She didn’t pay her taxes on her car wash in Anchorage, and she sent a letter 9refusing to pay) on her Governor’s stationary. Look, I saw a report on her from July about Troopergate, done by a local Alaska TV station about her notorious abuse of power, not just this one, there are LOTS of them!
Good grief, she is one busy person. But gosh, she believes Iraq is God’s will, and if we all have to go down fighting, that is God’s will also.
Where did he dig her up! She should be on Jerry Springer
WOW…
Why isn’t anyone pointing out that she was a leader in an independent party that was trying to get Alaska to secede from the Union?
When Mrs. Obama said she was proud of her country for the first time, the republicans jumped all over that questioning her loyalty as an amercian. Sheeeet this gal is trying to divide the United States and no one says a word, just focus on the kid…believe me there is a lot more to focus on that is far more damaging and everyone is ignoring the more important things.
A Showdown in Alaska!
Palin revealed a recording of one phone call by her of staff, Frank Bailey. In that call, Bailey complained that there had been “absolutely no action for a year on this issue” and said that Palin and her husband were frustrated that Wooten was still a state trooper. Palin has also acknowledged that her administration had made more than 20 calls to the Department of Public Safety regarding his brother in law, Wooten. But said, at no time did I authorize any member of my staff to do so. “Wooten had nothing to do with Mohegan’s firing.”
In July, 2008, the state Legislative Council — a bipartisan group of lawmakers – chose a special counsel for the investigations. In addition, democrat Sen. Hollis French, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee was selected to oversee the investigations. Now (after being picked as VP), Palin challenges that the Legislative Council has no statutory mandate to investigate her. She says the matter should be in the hands of the Personnel Board, an independent agency composed of members appointed by her (the Governor). Also says she is too busy to be questioned on subject at this time. She prefers this to be done after November elections. She does not want an October surprise. What is she afraid of?
Senator French said, if Palin does no comply, subpoena will be considered.
What’s even more scary is that Sarah Palin believes that our military is “doing the work of God” in Iraq. I’d like to know where she got this knowledge from – she seems to know an awful lot about what God wants. Now add to that the sermon she attended two weeks ago in which the speaker said that the terrorist attacks on Israel were judgment against Jews for not becoming Christians. Of course Obama can’t comment since he had his own problems with his pastor – but if this is what’s coming out after only 5 days then there must be some pretty frightening skeletons in her closet. I really hope she’s not representative of “Christian values” in this country…I find her views and the views of those she associates with to be completely disgusting.
I’m shocked how the media protrayed Palin’s speech as dynamic and feisty and full of excitement. Its like these news channels were afraid to look sexist if they were to challenge her credentials. Where’s the substance?! What is she going to do for this country as VP? She hasn’t discussed one issue that Americans are dealing with. Nothing about the Economy, nada about healthcare, nothing detail about the environment and alternative energy. All I heard in the whole speech was Obama attacks and her protrail of rural middle class voters as being the true Americans. I really tried to hear both sides of the argument, but Palin’s teleprompter performance really turned me off the rest of this convention to the point where I could care less what McBush says tonight.
Clara check your facts. It was her husband who was apart of the Independent Party during 2002. He has been a Republican sense sense 2003. Check your facts before providing mis-information.
Are we really being onesided?? You have so many other sites to go to but you chose this one BET.Com. So just think about that for a second.I believe people like you come here to pick others apart(if you could). However most folks here are educated and this is what angers you…OBama 08
The following is an excerpt of an e-mail I received from David Plouffe:
“Before John McCain accepts the Republican nomination on Thursday, his campaign has to spend every last dollar of primary funds they’ve raked in from Washington lobbyists and special interest PACs.
”Just yesterday, they aired a new negative ad in 14 swing states. His campaign manager even admitted that all McCain has to rely on is attacks, saying that for them, “This election is not about issues.”
”He doesn’t want Americans to notice that the Republican platform is the most extreme we’ve ever seen — opposing stem cell research, denying a woman’s right to choose no matter what the circumstance, and continuing to spend $10 billion a month in Iraq.
“They don’t even mention protecting equal pay for equal work.
”They support huge tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% of Americans.”
On an issue of some concern to Americans — the economy — the Republicons have nothing to say.
I have combed the schedule of events here in Minnesota without finding a single forum, workshop or kaffeeklatsch devoted to what John McCain and the Republican Party propose to do about America’s short- and long-term economic challenges. I’ve found four panels on what to do about the Middle East, but not one on what to do about the Middle West.
At a time when millions of Americans are struggling like never before to pay their mortgage, their medical bills, and their gas bills, tonight’s speakers at John McCain’s Republican convention proved how out of touch their candidate is by saying not one word about his plans to put our economy back on track and provide real relief to middle-class families. Apparently, John McCain’s belief that we’ve made ‘great progress’ economically over the last eight years means he doesn’t have to offer any plans at all to fix our ailing economy.
The oversight, of course, is no surprise, given that Republicans consider America a nation of whiners in the throes of a mental recession, and that all our fiscal problems are … psychological.

Yes we are in perlious times and we need someone who we can trust not a lawyer I respect community organizers but do not use that as your experience for the top office in the US there are many who does that, but not many mayors or governors of some city or state. Obama not growing up with black parents knows black people and he knows all we want is to get paid for nothing, Obama mentions rebate check, giving blacks more entitlements and he has the black vote and loyality to the end. MLK would have a hard time dealing with black people now because we have become so lazy and needy for someone else to tell us what is right and how to act. I am a independent and I could have never voted for Hillary, because she was no integrity ask Bill. I like Palin over Mcain, she is not of washington, and to be fair this is her first speech and you want her to go over everything wrong with this country she cannot. As for the writer who said she was afraid to say she was american it is because of the hate we generate here it is sent to europe and they just go with it, if we showed we were proud of america they would also. We should be proud of our country Obama could not have done this in any other country on this planet, have you seen any blacks in high office in England. America is the most watched country on the planet and all the hate for each other is shown world wide and thats why we are not respected, because we do not respect our selves. I cannot trust Obama because he trusts europeans more than americans.
It appears that there were no women on the vetting team. Most women, including those without children, would have thought to raise a question about the native intelligence and caring for her unborn child involved in flying from Alaska to Seattle to Texas and back, on commercial jets, in her 3rd trimester; in not entering a Texas hospital when she began leaking amniotic fluid, particularly 6 weeks before her due date; in continuing at the governors’ conference, to give a speech; in not entering a Seattle hospital enroute home; in not entering a well-staffed hospital with neonatologists on board close to the Anchorage airport; in driving 45 miles to get to a tiny medical center near her rural home.
I don’t trust her judgment. And someone who didn’t consider that there might be a few million others who would look askance at a woman with that sort of judgment.
Or maybe the whole thing was a story to conceal a different reality, and this was the lesser of two untruths. But something just doesn’t fit together right.
Here’s a dispassionate conclusion based on objectively connecting the dots:
(1.) The most important decision the Presidential nominee ever makes is the choice of the vice-presidential nominee. “Country first” is the motto governing this crucial choice.
(2.) What is the most important decision the lucky person chosen to run with the future president ever makes? [Hint: Here also the motto governing the decision the vice presidential nominee faces is "country first."]
(3.) The most important decision facing the vice-presidential running mate is this: accept or reject?
(4.) Did Governor Palin put country first when she decided to accept John McCain’s gift to her? If she thinks she did, she must be confident that she’s well-prepared to be President the day after John McCain’s inauguration — if it comes to that. If this happens, Sarah Palin could, of course, suddenly find herself going up against the Kim Il Jongs and the Vladimir Putins of this complex and treacherous world.
(5.) If she believes she’s prepared for the task, based on her record, she is neither bright nor honest enough for the job.
(6.) If she has enough self-awareness to know that the demands of the job are way beyond her and still accepted the offer from John McCain, she clearly failed to put country first.
(7.) In either case, by accepting the vice-presidential candidacy, Sarah Palin has demonstrated that she is not fit for the job.
If I had been in Palin’s shoes, I would have said No to the VP spot. I would have been smart enough to realize that I was not qualified to go from running a state with a population of 607,000 to being the PRESIDENT of the United States. This is the situation I would consider, being that McCain is OLD and in bad health.
I also would take into consideration my HUGE responsibilities at HOME, finally, and deal with those problems, and STILL try to be a good governor in MY State of Alaska. I would ask myself, “would my family be happy going from hunting, fishing and snowmobilling in Alaska to sitting with stuffed shirts in Washington DC.??
I would have looked at the situation LOGICALLY, and realized that there were so many more Republicans, men AND women, MUCH MORE qualified than I, and if I truly wanted my party to WIN, I would work towards finding the STRONGEST ticket, not only for the PARTY, but for the people of the United States!
Finally, I would realize that as Vice-President, I would no longer be in the position to be able to BUY the votes of the American people, using OIL COMPANY money and government subsidies as I had done in Alaska.
I would realize that in Alaska, I had an 80% approval rating! All it took was those $2000 checks to the residents of Alaska, using the taxpayer’s money!
I am absolutely certain that if I were Sara Palin, I would appreciate my good fortune in Alaska, and decide to just STAY there!
I think we’re at the point where we can’t believe ANYTHING the McCain camp is saying about the vetting of Palin. Frankly, they’d be better off admitting they didn’t do much, because if they DID vet her thoroughly… and knew about all these issues before giving her the VP position… then they really did a disservice to the GOP. Especially allowing these “issues” to leak out during convention week. What a shame.
If she was so vetted, why are there McCain lawyers all over the place up there?
And how many shredding machines did they bring?
How many briefcases of cash?
Can you imagine what that town is going through right now?
This Levi kid can make a LOT of money off this if he plays his cards right.
If I were him I’d get an agent fast.
Governor Palin is there to merely strike a balance between John McCain who is ultra wealthy and her small town family. In her speech last night she didn’t address anything the public wanting to hear (i.e. the economy, middle class America and change). All she did was attack Obama and gloat about her small town, family and hockey moms. I think she missed the memo that her speech should have provided substance, than again, Bush’s speech writer drafted her speech so I doubt if they knew any better.
The “Troopergate” thing bothers me not because the trooper (Palin’s ex-brother-in-law) may have deserved to be fired–he may have–but because the public safety commissioner may have been fired either without just cause or due process. Laws and policy exist for a reason–so that those with power over others don’t abuse it.
It’s also interesting to me that this investigation was initiated by *Republicans* in the Alaska legislature. I’m left wondering why Palin is on the outs with her own party. It will just have to play out.
It would seem to be relevant, though. Especially after the Ketchikan newspaper reported Palin fired the Wasila police chief and city librarian without notice and not for cause–two town officials who supported her opponent for mayor.
Palin seems to have a penchant for taking revenge against people who don’t support her way of doing things. Great person to have with her finger on the button were she to ascend to the presidency. It wouldn’t make me feel like sleeping safely at night.
I am against Ms. Palin because she appears to be an extremist Right Winger
Her daughter’s pregnancy only points to the bankrupcy of her sermons –
– she wanted Creationism to be taught in classrooms.
– she characterized her son’s deployment to Iraq as a “task from God”
– she is against abortion even in the case of ~*?~ or incest.
– she thinks global warming is not real and more drilling is the answer to all our energy problems.
– she stated she opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, but the reality is she was a strong supporter of it — up to the last moment when there was bad publicity on it and only THEN did she pull the plug on funding.
– there is a question whether she fired the Police Chief because of a personal issue with her family. (her ex-brother in law was a policeman and she wanted him fired. )
– the part about her pregnant unmarried daughter is only relevant because Ms. Palin has been stronly opposed to sex education in schools.
Ms. Palin — Bridge to the Middle Ages.
THAT WOMAN IS EFFING INSANE ALONG WITH NO BRAIN MCCAIN! WHAT A TEAM…. TEAM ZERO BRIAN POWER..
