COLUMBUS (Nov. 5, 2008) – Throughout the night I received text messages, voice mails and e-mails from folks who couldn’t believe what was happening.
One text message from my niece in South Carolina was simple, “OMG” [Oh my God] and another from a niece in Michigan: “I wish toot could have seen this,” referring to Obama’s grandmother, who died Monday morning after suffering from cancer.
Cheers, tears and hugs are the only way I can describe the crowd’s reaction to the news that the freshman senator from Illinois had won Ohio.
Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman told me, “He’s done what Michael Dukakis, Al Gore, and John Kerry couldn’t do,” win Ohio. The win in Ohio truly set the mood for the rest of night. While waiting for returns from other battleground states, the crowd gathered in downtown Columbus had an air of confidence.
Widescreen televisions became the focus of the night and as state after state turned blue, the crowd erupted into cheers.
Columbus along with Cleveland, Toledo, Dayton and Youngstown delivered for Obama, and he faired well with earlier voters, young folks and African-Americans is the state. According to polling by CNN, Obama landed 63 percent of 18 -29 year-old voters, 97 percent of the Black vote, and 50 percent of the undecided cast their vote for the president elect.
Ohio is an important state in presidential politics and Tuesday night it was one of the early signs Obama was on the road the victory.

Todd,
Thank you. We should all be so mature.
Olounwa,
I responded to you yesterday but BET refused to post it. Anyway, yes I know that Africa is a continent not a country; don’t mistake my typing error for lack of knowledge. I actually know more about Africa than you think. I am by no means an expert as you seem to think that you are but I can hold my own in current affairs. Also I won’t dispute your asinine comment that I have no connection to Africa other than DNA because it’s simply preposterous. However, I do wonder how you think that you can tell me that I could never make it in Africa when you a black African live in the UK….so obviously you are the one who could not make it there. Further, I never said anybody owed me anything but to have intelligent debate on any blog we need to be respectful of even those opinions that we don’t agree with. Nobody learns from a closed book. You, Olounwa are a CLOSED BOOK. I’ve seen you ranting and raving n “BlackVoices.com”, “BlackAmericaWeb.com”, “hotmomma.com”, “tomjoyner.com”, “usmagazine.com”, some international sites, “bbc.com” and anywhere Olounwa can blog!. As for your the hip-hop nonsense…it’s too trivial to comment on.
“Rosa Parks sat, so Martin L. King could walk. Martin walked so Obama
could run. Obama ran so our children can fly!”
Does anyone know who first said these great and true words?
Mr. Obama we here in the caribbean are sooooo proud of your country. For so many poeple to put aside thier differences and choose something bigger than thierselves says we as a poeple are slowly but surely putin to rest those feelings and emotions that our ancestors had to endure. what made you choose this picture for this article?
Obama has really made HISTORY.
Our work has just begun. We need to work with our new president. We should be able to not only say that Obama was the 1st black President; we should be able to say that we, black people, are as good as any other races. Our talents and achievements were undermined because our skin color. Now the time has came – a time in which we have testified against color discriminations.
May God bless America
For all of those that think racism has been or will be eradicated or deminish because Obama has been elected I have some advise,PLEASE THINK AGAIN !!! Obama was elected because of a needless and endless war and hard economic times.Racism still exist and will not go away, atleast not right away.

The last time I checked Obama should be the first Inter Racial President. Why do all Americans need to put a color on someone rather than acknowledge what he or she can do for this country.
WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! GO OBAMA GO OBAMA GO GO GO Dang dogg you is my homie
God has chosen a right leader at a right time. No one can stand against obama, becuse he is a leader chosen to lead the world. No leader in this world has ever had a clear policy as president Obama. May God bless him more.
