COLUMBUS (Nov. 5, 2008) – Throughout the night I received text messages, voice mails and e-mails from folks who couldn’t believe what was happening.

One text message from my niece in South Carolina was simple, “OMG” [Oh my God]  and another from a niece in Michigan: “I wish toot could have seen this,” referring to Obama’s grandmother, who died Monday morning after suffering from cancer.

Cheers, tears and hugs are the only way I can describe the crowd’s reaction to the news that the freshman senator from Illinois had won Ohio.

Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman told me, “He’s done what Michael Dukakis, Al Gore, and John Kerry couldn’t do,” win Ohio.  The win in Ohio truly set the mood for the rest of night. While waiting for returns from other battleground states, the crowd gathered in downtown Columbus had an air of confidence.

Widescreen televisions became the focus of the night and as state after state turned blue, the crowd erupted into cheers.

Columbus along with Cleveland, Toledo, Dayton and Youngstown delivered for Obama, and he faired well with earlier voters, young folks and African-Americans is the state.  According to polling by CNN, Obama landed 63 percent of 18 -29 year-old voters, 97 percent of the Black vote, and 50 percent of the undecided cast their vote for the president elect.

Ohio is an important state in presidential politics and Tuesday night it was one of the early signs Obama was on the road the victory.

When I went to bed this morning I was happy, overjoyed and excited that we as a country elected our first black president. My mother who is 52 years old was blessed to see a black man elected. As I walked into my office this morning there was not shouting and rejoicing, all of the black set in their seats, said “Good morning” as we normally do but then it hit me, I noticed all of the blacks were calm and getting on with their workday as if it were another day for us. It was the white people chanting “change is coming” and “obama”. It wasnt that we weren’t cause that wasn’t the cause our tears and the memories of what was done before many of us, we simply prayed to god. But i have never ever dealt with so much racism in my entire lifetime. People whom I considered to be friends couldn’t speak to me anymore and the comment that were being said cut deep. “he only won it because he had all the black people voting for him”, Even when i got up to take a potty break my whereabouts where being questioned, to say I am hurt is an understatement. Did they know we only account for 12% of the population, it had to be someone else who helped us get him into office. Did i sway some voters, yes I did. IT DOES NOT TAKE A MAN WITH EXPERIENCE TO WIN A WAR, ONLY SOMEONE WITH HEART!, NOV 4 2008, we didnt fight we were silent and now victory is ours!

I’m a white male, who voted Republican, but I’m not discouraged.
I watched BET last night and heard the comments of Jeff Johnson. He seemed to indicate that it is a awesome responsibility that Barack has now. Barack has to step up to the plate, and assume a responsible, high-profile, position. I was encouraged Jeff recognized that BO has a big job to do. My opinion is that a black commander-in-chief will be held to a higher standard, possibly even higher than a white man.
Barack’s election will no doubt inspire other blacks to push themselves to higher goals, and break from the ghetto image that society has heard expressed in hip-hop songs, etc. This is a positive time, and one that makes me proud to be a witness of. A Barack presidency will hopefully help the poor break free from voluntary government slavery. We all need to be free from Uncle Sam controlling our lives from birth-to-grave.
Look-up America, for God has good things in-store for our nation, as we stand beside as friends to Israel. Genesis 12:2-3

From We Shall Over Come to Yes We Can. Oh how far we have come but we come this far by faith. For all of you that voted I say thank you for bring hope to the hopeless. The young people I work with now know that the place they call home is willing to start living out it’s true creed all men are created equal. And that every vote counts.

Barry,

We all will benefit from President Obama’s leadership. Even those who despise him. It will take time, he is no magician; just a humble, determined, highly intelligent, honest man with 100 miles of bad road ahead of him. It will likely take more than 1 term before we will see long lasting results in the economy. Foreign relations improved the minute he won the election; his sense of decency and extremely high moral fiber will be a welcome addition to the foreign relations table. America wasn’t broken overnight and it won’t be fixed overnight. BUT change has begun…POSITIVE AND REAL CHANGE!!!

Precious Clark-IA Said on

Wow! Who would have thought this could happen and what better time than now for this change to come. This was for the silent victims that had to endure for us as a people to get here! Now that we are here at this appointed time, this is a new beginning for us all. Let us unite, one with another as people… as Americans. Let us walk in excellence as our President, Barack Obama, assumes his position and walk in his purpose and destiny! Remember we are in this together and he will need all of us. Those that were for him and those that were against him. We are our brother’s keeper. We are fired up and ready to go Mr. President!!!!!!!
