COLUMBUS (Nov. 5, 2008) – Throughout the night I received text messages, voice mails and e-mails from folks who couldn’t believe what was happening.

One text message from my niece in South Carolina was simple, “OMG” [Oh my God]  and another from a niece in Michigan: “I wish toot could have seen this,” referring to Obama’s grandmother, who died Monday morning after suffering from cancer.

Cheers, tears and hugs are the only way I can describe the crowd’s reaction to the news that the freshman senator from Illinois had won Ohio.

Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman told me, “He’s done what Michael Dukakis, Al Gore, and John Kerry couldn’t do,” win Ohio.  The win in Ohio truly set the mood for the rest of night. While waiting for returns from other battleground states, the crowd gathered in downtown Columbus had an air of confidence.

Widescreen televisions became the focus of the night and as state after state turned blue, the crowd erupted into cheers.

Columbus along with Cleveland, Toledo, Dayton and Youngstown delivered for Obama, and he faired well with earlier voters, young folks and African-Americans is the state.  According to polling by CNN, Obama landed 63 percent of 18 -29 year-old voters, 97 percent of the Black vote, and 50 percent of the undecided cast their vote for the president elect.

Ohio is an important state in presidential politics and Tuesday night it was one of the early signs Obama was on the road the victory.

I like to start off by saying congratulations to our new found president, and his campaign. I noticed, when I went in to work today. It was pretty silent amongst the staff. It kind of took me by surprise that it came to that when Obama was elected as president. It’s a shame to have to go to work, and feel a negative vibe from your fellow employers. At first, I thought it was just me, until I called one of my family members at another work place, and he also said that it was also happening at his job also. Who are you to judge? What about our sacrifices we had to make to make our voices be heard? That goes to show us all that racism still exists……..

As a white male I can honestly say I have never been more proud of our country as I am today. This is one of our finest moments. I also just want to add that I thought McCain showed a lot of class in defeat. We all need to realize just how much he has given to this country. I will make sure to say a prayer every day to keep our new president safe.

Olounwa,

Your dislike and lack of respect for African Americans is quite evident and typical of native Africans. Often throughout the years I have encountered so called pure Africans such as yourself who think that being born in Africa makes them some how superior to African Americans. That’s rubbish and you are really old enough to know better. You speak of African Americans the way some racist whites speak of us. That’s a shame because with a name like Olounwa, you probably look more like us than them. Now if you support President elect Obama and he represents unity and peace; then why are you on here telling an African American that we are not connected to President elect Obama because his father is Kenyan and we are not? That’s silly and is divisive talk and actually the opposite of our new president’s goal for America; UNITY. Just because his father was of African descent and our father’s were descendents of men of African descent doesn’t sever the connection that we possess with Africa! Who are you do decide that we are not African Americans?

WE CAME HERE FROM AFRICA!! Africa is our motherland; most of us African Americans feel a deep respect for Africa whether we’ve traveled there or not. Some of us have traced our roots back to Africa and actually went there to the exact village and met family members. Africa is what makes us different from other Americans and you can’t touch that! Not all your doubt, intellect or slick words, etc…can change that fact. It is what it is! Just because you may have been born in Africa and we were born in the US doesn’t diminish the realness of our connection to our African culture. It’s inherent in our DNA; in our melanin; in our appearance; in some of our customs. How dare you try to take that from us? And here’s a news flash for you: The entire black community is not “hip hop” that is only a tiny but loud portion of our culture that get’s too much negative publicity. You wouldn’t know living in another country but there are many, many African Americans who did and still do what President elect Obama did; pull himself up by education. But I guess part of your disdain for African Americans includes only seeing or reading what reinforces your prejudice against us? Just like racist whites. When you purport to denigrate an African American you denigrate all of us of African descent; including yourself! How does that help progress toward a more global community? I’m sure you will come back with quick wit and plenty of cocky insults and much cursing as is your way on here but what are you really accomplishing with all this anger and fighting within the African and African American culture? Why all that bitterness toward us?

God bless America, God bless President Elect Obama. I declare peace, love and respect amongst all Black people in Africa, the Carribean, the US, Europe and Asia. We are one people, we are ONE people. We must love, respect and honor each other. I am my brother’s keeper, I am my sister’s keeper.Though separated by historical events, I STILL love and respect my brothers and sisters. We came from the same place, and we have been disrespected and maligned because of the melanin and DNA in us, so please don’t buy into anything that tells you that you are better than or lesser than a brother or sister from the U.S, Africa, the Carribean, Europe or Asia. Nope, that is not the way as clearly put by Sarah, the self hatred and self destruction is unwarranted. We can differ on principle, we can differ on opinions…..but let’s not disrespect each other. Thats what the enemy wants, the enemy will pit one brother against the other, and at the end of the day……we’ve still got our lives to live. Life is too precious, time is too valuable. Rise up beloved people….keep rising! you are winners and champions.

olounwa Said on

stop complaining sarah.. its irritating … besides, do you actually know that africa is a continent not a country?. what you understand of that continent can be written on a pin and still leave plenty of space.. just because you may look like me doesnt mean we have something in common.. nobody owes you anything , you stand and fall by your own cognition.. you claim to be from somewhere but have no connection to it apart from DNA SAMPLES… not good enough sarah… what i see is a lot of blacks who are fighting for the wrong things.. and whats more exporting that negative culture to black youth both in africa( like you dont know this) and other parts of the world. so save it. the truth hurts and always will.. untill you start to shout loudly about the horrendous black on black violence, untill you start to tackle problems that obama has touched upon and which jessie jackson cussed him out over(absentee baby daddies etc) and most of all, untill the N WORD is expunged from your collective vocabularies unstead of this stupid spelling bee nonsense i keep hearing .. its all just a load of whinging… and catawailing.. fix up …

BARACK OBAMA being elected President of the UNITED STATES is such an historic event for America and the WORLD. As a BLACK MAN, I am TRULY PROUD of AMERICA! And I ask BLACK Americans, to all give AMERICA, and the part of WHITE America that VOTED for a BLACK MAN for President of the United States; please give AMERICA credit and the **(PRAISE)** for doing some thing RIGHT! And REV AL SHARPTON and JESSIE JACKSON, you guys also have to give AMERICA some credit for electing a BLACK MAN as President of the United States.

And BLACK America and BLACK MEN, we have to look at BARACK OBAMA and see how important EDUCATION and focusing on COMMUNITY and doing the (RIGHT THING) is. And that is what OUR life’s should be about. Especially the BLACK MALE, we need to get ourselves together and focus on EDUCATION to get that JOB! And focus on taking care of our FAMILIES and taking care of our COMMUNITIES. BLACK man, be GOOD fathers to your kids; and be good and POSITIVE ROLE MODELS to your kids and to your COMMUNITY. GANGSTAS and THUGS should **(NOT)* be our kids heroes! Follow BARACK OBAMA example for EDUCATION and doing POSITIVE things in life for SUCCESS, not THUGS and GANGSTAS! Make sure you know who your kids are hanging out with. Make sure your kids do their Homework, and that they grow up to be and do something POSITIVE for the BLACK COMMUNITY. Even if you are NOT with the women that give birth to your kids, as a (MAN), YOU are responsible for taking care and helping raising your kids, and making SURE they grow up to be some thing **(POSITIVE)** in life. BLACK MEN, be MEN and do the RIGHT THING !
