Public or Private schools for the “First Family” Daughters?

Nov. 13, 2008 – This week Michelle Obama visited schools in search of the perfect place for “First Family daughters” to attend. While no decision has been released, on Monday Michelle Obama visited two private schools; Georgetown Day School and Chelsea Clinton’s alma mater Sidwell Friends School.
Of course, Mayor Adrian Fenty has made his pitch for 7-year-old Sasha and 10-year-old Malia to attend a public school in nation’s capital, as did former first child Amy Carter. The city boosts several nationally recognized Blue Ribbon Schools, and Fenty feels they have a lot to offer the new residents.
My guess is the decision will not be made lightly and will be all about what’s best for the girls. Both girls are now attending the academically rigorous University of Chicago Laboratory Schools: Malia’s in fifth grade, and Sasha is a second grade. Some folks say it more closely resembles Georgetown Day School.
During the campaign, I asked Michelle if the girls grasped the magnitude of what could happen if their father were to win and what it would mean to their lives as they know it.
“My older daughter [Malia] definitely has a keener sense about it than the 6-year-old [Sasha]: She’s asked about what will this mean for her life if dad wins…, and I know that she has mixed feelings about it,” she told me.
“On the one hand, she says she wants Daddy to win, because she thinks daddy will be a good president, and he’ll be able to do a lot for a lot of people. But on the other hand, she’ll have to move away from the community that she’s known forever, and she knows that there’s going to be some element of hesitation and fear that goes along with that. But we keep talking it through, and I reassure her that she’s completely rational to feel both of those emotions and [that] there’s nothing wrong with it,” Obama said.
Now that their move to Washington is a reality, let’s hope the girls are ready to make the adjustments to their new home at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and their new school, still to be determined.

this is a decision that they and they alone must make… with the security and the well being of the children in mind.

I hope the media respects the privacy of the kids during his tenure. Hopefully they will be kinder then they were to the clinton and bush kids.
The girls should should go to a school that offers an excellent education program. Just like all parents, The Obamas will make sure that the school selected whether public or private, will be a challenge for the girls. I’m sure security will be provided wherever they are. Unfortunately, kids are the same everywhere so they cant’ be sheltered. They will learn how to cope just like their dad has done.

Security is irrelevant. Kids can be kidnapped and threatened from private just as easily as public schools. This is just a case of Politicians as well as teachers making a choice but not allowing us to have school choice. Fact: 38% of DC Teachers wont send their kids to public schools, they send them to private. The general population numbers are much lower: 19% The point is Politicians and teachers know that publics schools are awful, but they WILL NOT allow you the free choice to attend another school. YES i’m talkin vouchers.
SASHA AND MALIA MUST GO TO THE PRIVATE SCHOOL ,FIRST MORE SECURITY AROUNG THIS TWO GIRLS .NEVER QUICK HIGHEST PROTECTION. As far as “treating kids of color with disrespect,” teachers don’t like it when the white kids curse them out either. Teachers don’t like it when the white kids bring guns to school either, and they don’t like it when the white kids disrupt their class. IT GOES BOTH WAYS, kids get treated how they want to be treated. Public or Private, disruptive kids will have problems, but I think Obama kids will do fine.
Put them in a charter school for bad kids.!!!
