Obama Signs Order to Close Guantanmo

Jan. 22, 2008 – President Barack Obama takes on his second full day in the White House with a flurry of Executive orders that will re-define and re-direct policies addressing terrorist threats.
The orders signed in the Oval Office today will close the Guantanamo Bay detention center, re-examine military war crimes trials and eliminate some of the harshest methods of interrogation. .
“We intend to win this fight. We’re going to win it on our terms,” Obama said.
“Our terms” is in keeping with his campaign promise of closing one of the most hotly debated issues during the 2008 presidential campaign.
The detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba has an estimated 245 men being held there. The controversy surrounding the detainees is the length of time they have been held without being charged with a crime.
“The message that we are sending the world is that the United States intends to prosecute the ongoing struggle against violence and terrorism and we are going to do so vigilantly and we are going to do so effectively and we are going to do so in a manner that is consistent with our values and our ideals,” the president said.
This could be one of the first positive steps the president makes toward improving America’s international image and reaffirming Obama’s objections to the constant accusations America is engaging in torture at the prison.
The order calls for the detention center to be closed in one year. Obama also created a task force to recommend polices on how to handle detainees in the future and requiring all U.S. personnel follow the U.S. Army Field Manual while interrogating detainees.
Lot those men out and when they do lot them in American so they can do want they came here to do.
Obama would be a fool to close Gitmo, but I think he will. He is what he said he was, a citizen of the world, and what the rest of the world thinks is greater than keeping America safe. It is crazy to put Timothy Geither in charge of the IRS when he forgets to pay his taxes to the sum of 34,000 dollars, let you forget to pay taxes for that amount, they will be knocking on your door. I still do not get Obamas logic of spending us out of a recession. Why not use the idea of making America energy independent process shale, wind, solar, and coal stop paying OPEC billions and keep the money here. I think Obama wants us all to be on welfare and need the government to do everything for us. America can handle hard times if the path forward is logicial, not when we do not know the path. What a dumb move!!! Club Gitmo is a military prison. He’s worried about them losing sleep and getting waterboarded. Frats do more damage than that.

I agree with the president that Gitmo should be closed. I’m sure the majority of the “inmates” there are American enemies, they haven’t been given a trial and, are subjected to inhumane & unjust conditions. I believe that everyone has a right to a trial or some sort of judicial preceding to determine if any crimes have been committed. Some of these people have been locked up since 2001 just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now, I would like to know where the remaining ” convicted inmates” will be housed. I’m sure that everyone there is not innocent and there are some criminals there. I would lik to know who/where will they be kept………..I must agree with Bama on the “spending out of a recession” point. Instead of a stimilus bill perhaps payroll taxes should be cut temporarily as another means to stimulate the economy. I can’t see someone who is already barely making ends meet, getting $$ from the government and spending it!! More than likely it will be put towards a past due bill or used for some other immediate family necessity. I just don’t forsee anyone spending that $$ right away!! And, I am an Obama supporter……..Just thinking everything thru!!
this is the best thing that obama can do, no wonder bush was pushing those so called military trials as he knew that most definately obama would do the right thing on guantanamo bay.. its an aberration on the american body politic and its illigal in the us so that goes to show you . that institution and rendition have to be stopped, if the americans are serious about keeping themselves safe they should stop endorsing what israel does on the gaza strip..stop invading poor defenceless countries to take away their natural resources and keep to a code of conduct that will command international respect… thank GOD FOR OBAMA !!!
