Recovery: Stimulus Is “One Leg of the Stool”

Obama Press Conference

By Pamela Gentry,  Senior Political Analyst

Feb. 9, 2008 – President Obama made the case for his economic plan during his first nationally televised news conference.  He called on his critics to “set aside” differences and work with him to get the economy back on track and the American people back to work.

“It is absolutely true that we cannot depend on government alone to create jobs or economic growth. That is and must be the role of the private sector. But at this particular moment, with the private sector so weakened by this recession, the federal government is the only entity left with the resources to jolt our economy back to life,” he said in his opening statement.

Questions were raised about his outreach to Republicans, repairing the banking system, Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq, but the majority of the questions centered on the economy.

Obama said he would judge the success of his economic plan if it opened credit markets and lenders were confident in the economy; housing market stabilized; job loss declined and new jobs were created.

“The recovery and reinvestment package is not the only thing we have to do. It’s one leg of the stool. We are still going to have to make sure that we are attracting private capital, get the credit markets flowing again, because that’s the lifeblood of the economy.

What do you think of the President’s speech? Do you think he made a strong case?

I find it very ignorant to say that you have to have a certain amount of intelligence to be able to intimately discuss this subject of the stimulus bail out. First of all those who can not generally speak about this subject are the ones who are being affected by this economy. The people who can talk about this subject with intelligence and education are the ones who are not particularly suffering from the economy. So before putting yourself and our people down, explain what is going on for someone that may have the questions but who comes to BET for thier resourceful information. If you do that then you will educate and uplift those who do not understand and there will be more hits on this topic. Without this stimulus bailout the economy is going to be shot and if we continue to be ignorant on these important political matters we African-Americans, Latinos and other threads that make up the American Quilt will continue to suffer. Be Blessed and Favored by God.

I agree Esquire with you. I wish olounwa would keep her ignorant comments to herself. She’s very STUPID!!! But I agree with everything President Obama said last night. The stimulus check won’t solve nothing for real but it’s a start in the right direction. Olounwa get a life or an American education you are very stupid!

This stimulus package will prove to be a disastor for the US economy….these ideas did not work in Japan in the 80’s and 90’s nor did they work in the US during the great depression. No Nation has ever been able to spend its way to prosperity….NEVER!!!

Reminds me of a story about Muhammad Ali back when he was still Cassius Clay. One day he was on a plane going to his next flight, he was feeling good and laughing with friends. The stewardess walked by before the flight took off and asked him to put his seatbelt on, he ignored her. She asked him again, he paid no attention. Finally she leaned in and ordered him to put his seatbelt on to which he replied ” Superman dont need a seatbelt”. She retorted “Superman dont need an airplane”. He buckled up.

This stimulus package will help destroy the economy. So in other words put your seat belt on because a crash is coming…..soon if this bill passes.

I MEANT THE STIMULUS CHECK WILL NOT SOLVE NOTHING RIGHT NOW AT THE MOMENT OR WE WON’T SEE THE RESULT RIGHT OFF HAND BUT IT’S A START IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. Rednblack that story you gave us meant WHAT??? We’ve already crashed & President Obama is TRYING to pick up the pieces but haters like you & ignorant people like Olounwa are trying to get in the way! God bless President Obama & family!

rednblack Said on

Joi……we have not crashed yet. Brace yourself because it is really going to get ugly if this stimulus passes(The point of the story is to get ready for the ramifications of the continued mis management of this economy by the Federal Government)

By the way have you seen what the market has done since Obama was elected. The markets tank every time after Obama talks about his “rescue package” while gold accelerates in value. Market is down 18% since Nov 4th while gold is up 30%…….that is clearly telling me Obamas plans will create hyper-inflation which is nasty bad. In other words, welcome to Zimbabwe.

We should pay no attention to hateful motives and political ideas. The problem is Obama inherited the bad economy and two wars. He’s working hard to help our country and to do nothing is not intelligent to me. So please America don’t complain unless you have better ideas. Something different from the last 8yrs must be inforced.

Now , lemme reinforce somnething that Prez Obama, kept saying cause there are too many thich-headed ppl, who can’t seem to get this thru they skull, this is a problem he INHERITED. And he’s trynna fix it. Personally, I think Bush should have had to deal wit it, and came up with a viable solution before he took that grand ol’ exit! But since that’s neither here nor there,, GIVE THE PREZ A BREAK, AFTER ALL HE BEEN WORKIN SINCE NOV 5TH! And these ol’crust republicians have the nerve to holla it’s ridiculous, but they eatin good… They ain’t worried bout not havin a job, food to put on the table. Consider this it took what, 72 hrs top for them to pass that otha bailout, yet it’s takin all this time to pass this one, things that make u say hmmm. If I wa the Prez I wouldve fired all of them, til they show they can get it together!

I listen to our President Obama last night give his first speech. He did make a strong stand and he also let banking business we won’t accept their way of spending on executives, planes and not support businesses needing credit to establish their businesses and employees. Obama took a strong stand on Iraq and even joking about his vice president stands and outlook. Obama showed he’s on top of our economy and he will again take anything to WE THE PEOPLE

NOLAhomegirl Said on

Love, you are right it took them 72 hours or less to pass the Wall Street Bailout. I’m no republican but I must agree with them on some of the opposition!! We gave Wall Street a bailout that was unprecedented and wasteful!! They have done very little in return for us. The Wall Street Bailout was not scrutinized enough. So with this bailout republicans and a few democrats are reading this bailout line by line. I, for one, am glad because this will save us from making the same mistake twice. I have read most of the stimilus bill and it did have lots of spending in it. We definitely don’t want a bill that has so much spending that the “stimilus” gets lost in it. I however, have no doubt that it will pass once some of the spending parts are removed…..Olounwa, please tell me what qualifies you to be an expert on African Americans? From your usual post, I understand that you are orginally from Africa but live in the U.K., right? So how are you an expert on African Americans? Just need to know!!

Sweetpea Said on

Obama was strong in delivering his speech last evening. He also strong in telling the banking & wall street folks — he won’t accept the present spending for executives and no support for credit to businesses and employees. He was strong on the Iraq issue. Yet we could laugh when asked about his vice president on foreign issues. I love seeing and appreciated the way reporters were called upon and answered. Obama didnot seem scare, but confident in his message to WE THE PEOPLE. I felt in Obama’s first 100 days he get’s an “A+”. Obama looks good and his words were strong, direct and clear. I felt he had a steering hand on our economy as we move forward.
