Is the N.Y. Post Calling Obama a Monkey?

New York Post Racist Cartoon?

By Pamela Gentry, Senior Political Analyst

Feb. 18, 2009 – The Rev. Al Sharpton is demanding that The New York Post, which has come under fire in the past for racially tinged cartoons, explain what it meant in its latest controversial offering.

Played prominently on today’s editorial pages, the cartoon depicts two police officers – one with his smoking gun drawn – standing over what appears to be a dead chimpanzee in a pool of blood. One officer says to the other: “Now they’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.”

It begs the question:  Are they referring to the dead chimp as the president of the United States?

Without jumping to conclusions, I tried to determine what the $787 billion stimulus package signed into law yesterday and the police shooting of a raging mad chimpanzee have in common.

The Rev. Al Sharpton appears to be a bit puzzled as well.   “Being that the stimulus bill has been the first legislative victory of President Barack Obama (the first African American president) and has become synonymous with him it is not a reach to wonder whether the Post cartoonist was inferring that a monkey wrote it?”

The Rev. Al Sharpton is demanding that The New York Post, which has come under fire in the past for racially tinged cartoons, explain what it meant in its latest controversial offering.

“On its face, it appears that the Post is not only calling Obama an ape, but a dead ape. “The cartoon in today’s New York Post is troubling at best, given the racist attacks throughout history that have made African-Americans synonymous with monkeys,” Sharpton writes on his National Action Network website. “One has to question whether the cartoonist is making a less than casual inference to this form of racism when, in the cartoon, the police say after shooting a chimpanzee, ‘now they will have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill, Sharpton writes.

how can they call obama an ape – that racist republican newspaper!! obama has inherited the worst ecomomy in history from a white republican and is going to get all of us money for stimulus package to the poor and black neighborhoods

Amy P. said on February 18th, 2009

What in the world?? How did they even let this be printed? I mean….I am absolutely floored by this because I cannot believe that they’re allowed to disrespect our president like this. The ad should be pulled and the NY Post should be issuing an apology to President Obama. He took over after the worst president this country has seen in it’s 200+ yr history and because he is taking a much needed chance on an economy that is shot, he is criticized like this??!!! Are you serious? Yeah….I’m pretty appauled.

Serifoy said on February 18th, 2009

Dangerous and irresponsible to have something like this published. It should be retracted and an apology should be written and someone should be fired.

Gerri Walker said on February 18th, 2009

It’s racist, no doubt and it’s dangerous. They should be fined/punished, something to make sure they get the message that they cannot get away with this or any other racist stories, cartoons, etc. they might have in mind.

I believe this is an outrage. whom ever wrote this should be fired, and should personally apologize to our president. this is shameful, a disgrace, callow, and VERY ignorant.

melissa said on February 18th, 2009

Look people…for one, Obama did not write the stimulus bill, the house and senate did, therefore they are calling THOSE people monkeys ( or saying that a monkey could do that job). There is nothing racist about this cartoon. I am black and didnt even look at it this way. what is wrong with people?

msbrownie said on February 18th, 2009

I’ve looked at the pic several times to try and find something different but there isn’t anything! Its very clear that they are referring to our president. Yes its racist and I think the sh** is ludacris that they are even allowed to do that.it doesn’t matter now because the bill has passed and its nothing they can do about it now.

Julia Carson-Hayes said on February 18th, 2009

These NY Times people are small minded; they should just get over it!!! President Obama is a wonderful President; he will do a much better job than that last one.

Prejudice should be a thing of the past. Everyone is concentrating on the economy and not the color of a person’s skin. Give our President a chance to do his job.

how can they call Obama a Monkey because of what his trying to do for the people. His trying his best to Fix what was broken. Everyone should be happy that we finally have a president that cares about the people. What I mean about the people, are everyone in the United States. POOR,MIDDLE CLASS, and RICH.. I bet that once everyone recieved the STIMULUS CHECKS in your mailboxes they are the happiest candidate. Give the guy a chance. Don’t judge a book by it’s cover, open the book first and read it. Who ever calls Black people a MONKEY, should look in the MIRROR, because your a MONKEY TOO.. NY Post needs to really reread what they POST

Treasy said on February 18th, 2009

I think that this is a ridiculous cartoon and this is probably one good reason that Al Sharpton has to make noice about. This should not at all be acceptable, nor should have even been printed! This clearly shows one point of view about the stimulus bill, which for the most part no one as even gave him a chance to make it work. And secondly the dead monkey and 2 white police officers speaks for itself. It has Racism written all over it. What type of influence does this newspaper think that they are going to have on the public, publishing something so ignorant and outrageous!!

zeezee said on February 18th, 2009

I agree w/you Serifoy, and they will do just as you suggested, but after they have seen their sales “skyrocket” due to the article and inquiring minds that want to know.

We have a Black president in the white house but the same small minded, prejudiced people in the world.

And this we shall overcome also.

kai said on February 18th, 2009

This in my opinion is a total disrespect to the President. This add should be removed immediately by management and the person who was “monkey” enough to put it there should be dealt with immediately …….

Carolyn Pollard said on February 18th, 2009

I agree with Serifoy, someone should be fired. Freedom of Speech is one thing but this is going too far. Not only should someone be fired, but they should have to come up with a “Stimulus” package deal since they feel “They” could do a much better job than “Our” President. Everyone seems to forget, President Obama inherited this mess, he did not create it…We All did!!

marilyn clark said on February 18th, 2009

When I first heard about this I thought that maybe it was just an internet rumor. It is so hard to believe that with all of the successes African Americans have had in this country, that we still seem to have to fight the same battles over and over. No matter how many degrees, no matter how many steps forward – same thing again. When will the powers that be in this country put their actions behind the statement that there is no more racism here?

gloria said on February 18th, 2009

Indeed, however they can call him whatever they like; it will not change the fact that we have a black president. There is no humor in that we as blacks have gone thru this all our lives so it’s not a joking matter. Like everyone else they want us to see the humor in it without insult and we would have if weren’t treated like monkeys. The one thing about it Obama is an intelligent man and I guarantee he is not bothered at all. The good thing about it is that our people are coming together and uniting as one, not just blacks but people in general, which is who we have been all this time. This is GOD’S doing. And the ones who are still riding the racial world, your lost!!!!

Yvonne Majette said on February 18th, 2009

I tell you, this society is going to get enough of calling Black Americans out of their names. Wake Up White America!! Our last president, who was booed out of D.C. on Inauguration Day put us in the worst economic crisis that this country has ever seen. So bad that we are no longer looked at as the most powerful country. We have some catching up to do and this type of racism will not allow us to move forward. I’m sure that the person who did this is some David Duke type person who has no life and can’t get past go

I hope his mind sat is as tough as he precives it to be, because he will need it for the next four years because the white man is definitely going to test him. Good and bad….

I am unfortunately not shocked or apauled, and that’s sad that I am so used to these type of racist things said about blacks in general and more than ever President Obama, that it doesn’t shock me. What shocks me is how such a respected paper can print this and Rev Al has to be the one to make an isse out of it. Why isn’t it an issue with whites blacks readers of the paper and non readers this is a problem and the writer should be fired after issuing an apology.

MichaelMiguel said on February 18th, 2009

All it would take is a boycott until the paper goes out of business. That seems like a simple solution. Lets see if their paper lasts after this. I am a former NYC resident but if I were there, I would not touch a post to wrap dead fish.

We should not be surprised at all, we should be expecting these type of attacks on the chess board of national racism. Do you think all of a sudden a 1,0000 year old mind set has changed over night. Wake up. There are those that drink from a tall glass of hateration and division everyday. Your job is to see it clearly without your glasses being foggy. All this speaks too
massive insecurity and deep inferiority. No melanin.

One thing comes to mind when I look at a picture like this. I pray that no ignorant, racist, maniact with get any ideas. Death to any president is a threat against our nation. If burning of the United States flag is against the law, dipicting the president of the United States as an Ape and shooting him by the very individuals who are sworn to uphold law should be as well. Yes, I believe in freedom of the press, but this has gone to far. President OBama is a great and wonderful man. Bush got us in all this trouble I did not see any publications that demeaned and totally disrespected him. This only proves that racism is alive and well in this country. But God brought it to the light. Maybe He wanted all of to really see what kind of magazine the New York Times really is. Thank you God for allowing us to see the truth. “Once was blind but now we see”

New York times all respect for your paper has gone out the door. I will never pick another copy and I pray others will follow .

Linda Frederick said on February 18th, 2009

I too am appalled at the blatant shot (no pun intended) at President Obama. It seems that the New York Post thinks it is free to put in print whatever it wants to out there without fear of repercussions. I’ve heard of freedom of the press, but this is ridiculous. Animal rights groups should speak out about this also. Also this depicts how some policemen are so quick to draw their guns and fire them off. This is 2009 people; let’s wake up.

They should charged with endangering the president life. Applying that he’s a dead man. Someone should seriously look into this and make and example of these N.Y Post. If it was a black man they would took action quick.

Actually Melissa the REAL question is what is wrong with you? When did your morals go out the window? Even if they “WERE” speaking about the House Senate as you state, when did it become alright to call ANY human no matter what your race or gender a monkey? There is something very wrong with the creator of this cartoon and he/she should be fired IMMEDIATELY.

What is wrong with people you ask, so many have LONG lost the one “Golden Rule” that our grandparents and great grandparents struggled and died for “RESPECT FOR ONE ANOTHER”. And for you to get on here and admit your ignorance is outright crazy. You mysister should wake up and smell the roses, you have a long way to go before you actually “Get It” if we don’t stand up for what’s right this WHOLE world is in terrible trouble. Now think on that!

Everyone that had anything to do with the creation of this and letting this cartoon get published should be fired. the NY Post will never get my business ever again. and everyone who voted for obama should feel the same way.

Read the news. In the news the cops shot an ape that mauled a woman. This is a joke on that. That an ape would write a goverment plan. The joke has nothing to do with Obama. The catoonist would have made the same joke if Bush was President. The joke is about the ape that cops shot. Apparently any jokes that would have been allowed with a white President are now off limits.

If you step back (wayyyyyyyy back) and try to see what was trying to happen, you will see a very bad attempt to take two emerging stories of the day, the shooting of the chimp in Stamford, CT and the historic signing of the stimulus package, and mold them into one comic strip… bottom line… IT DID NOT WORK!! IT FAILED!!! Now, you have everyone questioning the subconsious of the “persons” responsible (who somewhere in the black cavity of their delusional minds thought this was funny). Honestly, I don’t believe this should have been approved for print, but I can’t focus on this right now when I’m trying to save my home from foreclosure and keep my job at the same time… bottom line, there are more important issues I would like to see us tackle as a nation. The people at the Post are as simple minded as the idiots at Fox network… Don’t keep making a fuss about it, just ignore it and them… don’t watch their shows, don’t buy their product…. eventually, they will get the message and change their format…. or they will fold….there really are more of “us” (morally conscious people) than there are of “them” (small minded ______ *you fill in the blank*)

This is hilarious!! I love it!! Its not racist…how do you even know they are refering to the POTUS? He didnt even write the stimulus.

Anthony said on February 18th, 2009

I usually the last to jump on the racist bandwagon but wtf!?!? Clearly. And I mean clearly this crossed the line. I am floored.

No doubt, I believe this cartoon is referring to Obama as a dead monkey, plain and simple. There is no other way to sugar-coat it. This was blatant disrespect and racism in satirical form. I know we have freedom of speech, but with freedom, there are still obligations and boundaries and consequences for acting on it, especially when there is a negative “impact”.

I say we boycott the NY Post and it’s affiliates… who are they? Nothing’s changed, educated blacks are still the greatest fear of most white men in america. what else could this mean… these people are more afraid what President Obama will do for this country and for the world. They are afraid he will do it better!!!… as we always have!!!

Look, I really won’t get into whether or not I find it to be racist, but I will say that it is the shooting part that I have a problem with. In my opinion, no good will come from this whether it was meant to be derogatory or not.

EVERYONE KNEW (SHOULD HAVE KNOWN) THAT IT WAS JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THIS KIND OF THINKING MADE ITS WAY TO PRINT. OF COURSE, PORTRAYING PRESIDENT OBAMA IN THAT WAY WILL BRING ABOUT A RESPONSE USING MANY ADJECTIVES ETC., HOWEVER, PORTRAYING THE POLICE IN THAT WAY ONLY FEEDS INTO THE WAY THAT GOOD POLICE OFFICERS ARE BEING DEPICTED. I WILL NO LONGER BUY THAT NEWSPAPER NOR WILL I READ IT. ALSO, I PLAN TO SEND THIS COMMENT TO THE NEWSPAPER.

Enough already! Maybe someone can help me with this. Has there ever been a time when whites are racial targets in the Black Media? Why do they perceive that it is acceptable to do such things? I just look at it this way, they can’t hold a candle to us, they bite off of EVERYTHING that we do, i.e. music dress, style, conversation, this is their only way of attacking us! We are able to live and love without money equating to such. We handle dissapointments a LOT BETTER than they do, and life isn’t over for us ……just because….

I by no means intend for this to be a racial comment, but the right of speech, doesn’t give one he right to insult or demean another race or person.

What a sad lot of people!

Get ready for more of this kind of junk and in many instances worse. There is an arrogance possessed by these people and they don’t feel they have to be sensitive to any thing and any body.

I don’t know what stands out for me more, the fact that this well known corporation is still able to strees the freedom of speach clearly in promotion of continued racisim! Or the fact that we will never be considered as equals in this society even though rather directly or in directly we as the black community are responsible for this nation staying a float in the world for thus this long. We have taken the verbal, physical, and mental abuse of this world in my opinion more than others and still we continue to put ourselves unselfishly on the front line of war for this nation. When and how is respect and brotherhood no longer part of the dream but reality?

Sacto- You dont understand the political system. The president DID/DOES not WRITE the stimulus bill, The house and Senate do. Its still in ill taste i am not denying that, and i also do not care for the Post either. But this, I feel, is not abut Obama, yet is about the “monkeys” they feel we have in congress. Obama simply signed it into law, he didnt write it. And alot of those folks in Washington have the intelligence of a monkey- not being able to think completely on their own. THATS is what this cartoon is about, not the president!!!

I think this is a disgrace and the writers, cartoonist, and publisher should be suspended from duty. Obama’s stimulus package isn’t going to help just black people…it will help stabilize our fragile ecomony. A nation that prays together will definitely stay together. May the Lord continue to bless this nation, President Obama & his family, and most of all US! We have to speak favor over this world/nation and it will come to pass.

Of course they were referring to Obama as the dead monkey in the inference. What do you think? Lets not play dumb and stupid here. Those of us who are Americans, Black Americans especially, know what this is about. Guess what? It is a manefestation of what is already being planned and has yet to come. Dont be surprised. The president will succeed in his ambitions, and as a result there will be a price he has to pay. This president admires Lincoln and tries to follow in his footsteps. I wonder how many people are playing dumb about that who will state that they “wonder why”?

Jack White said on February 18th, 2009

Drew, the NY POST knew it was being directed at Obama and that is why they are about to issue a statement indicating once again they dont know how this “somehow got out” without knowledge. Lame excuse NY Post

carolyn said on February 18th, 2009

Yes, it’s a racist cartoon. It just goes to show you, there are still narrow-minded people in this world, and they’re very comfortable being ignorant and insensitive.
