Costly Cartoon for The New York Post?

Feb. 20, 2009 — It looks like the controversy over The New York Post’s political cartoon has taken another turn: Folks are now calling for a boycott of the paper’s advertiser. All of this stems from the cartoon Tuesday depicting two officers, one with a smoking gun pointed at dead chimp and saying, “Next time they’ll have to get someone else to write the stimulus package.”
The cartoon started a firestrom of criticisms questioning if the paper was linking President Obama to the dead chimpanzee. The paper has denied the connection and called the cartoon a “parody” of a news event. But their explanation appears to have fallen on deaf ears.
Just before midnight I received an e-mail with an attached list of businesses to boycott.
The e-mail said, “Please e-mail this list to everyone you know, also send e-mails to the individual companies to voice your displeasure with them for their association with The New York Post, if you are so inclined.”
I wasn’t the only journalist on the list but some cc’d were not. Those listed to be targeted by the boycott included the following national advertisers:
Bank of America , City Bank , HSBC, Capital One Bank , Bloomingdale’s Department Store , Diesel Clothing Line, Jill Stuart Clothing Line.
The call for boycotts started with activist the Rev. Al Sharpton, who lead protestors outside the New York offices of the paper on Wednesday. But the civil rights leader and talk show host now has the support of other fellow Black radio show hosts Steve Harvey and Michael Baisden. Both have discussed the topic and call for a boycott on their shows.
But the call to target the paper’s revenue source isn’t solely from the Black community. The e-mail I received included a link with a number of White radio show host affiliated with Air America Media, an on-line media network who also agrees. The five year-old network describes itself as, “The nation’s leading progressive media network, representing a smart, entertaining and independent political voice on-air and online.”
Do you think a boycott of the paper and it’s advertiser will have an impact?
Its said that they are not happy. But soon or later the will relize GOD put President Obama in the white for time like this. I think what some people are scared of is that by him being a string black man that he will come in and clean up the mess that was made. What I like about this is the President Obama is not forcing on this paper He is doind what he set out to do. He has not taken his eyes off of what he said he was and going to do to get this U.S.A running right again. Obama has the right idea, he who hold you control you, And he he not letting what they put in that paper control him, Good for you Mr. President Obama. GOD bless you and your famuly always
I bet that doggone editor will think one hundred times before he puts another racist cartoon in his paper, that ha been doing badly in the the first place

You know some people make you wonder why they do the things they do. I mean people should just get over the fact that OBAMA is the NEW PRESIDENT, we voted and we got what we wanted. Hey Family,
Let’s do EVERYTHING that we can to show this world that for the rest of our life, we have ZERO tolerance for ANY form of racism. Yeah, we might have been “sleep” for a while, but since we have the HIGHEST OFFICE you can get in the USA – were ready to ride with our President and let him know that we have his back!
But remember family, it can’t be just a 1 day or 1 week boycott. It took our people 385 days to convince Montgomery that we don’t want to ride in the back of the bus no more and they even caused the bus/taxi services to go out of business and they had less sources, money and even did it without the assistance of a computer/internet.
We as the next generation, have to step our game up – let’s go!

People should watch what they say and do, and if that would have been done when Bush was president it would have been said they were
anti American. Remember when the county group said they were ashame to be from Texas and people broke their CD boycott there concert, so I believe we should do the same and it might make people lose jobs and the first one to go should be the coward that ok the cartoon and the one who drew it. Black American said up and say enough is enought.
To “Shannon”: Go back and read what I wrote and tell me which part of what I said is NOT the truth, but try to read it from a standpoint besides color, if that’s possible. BTW, which grammar school did you attend? You need to go back and try again.
To “Get it Right”: Why does it matter what color I am? What part of my message do you see as being racist? It’s easy to keep the fire of racism alive when all you want to do is fan the racial flames. (That means that as long as you continue to force racism into everything, it will continue to exist. I’m guessing that what you really would like to see happen.) My qustion is why the S.S. has not went to the post and made some arrest for threating or even surgesting that some hram should happen to the frist Man or his Family.

Tell me that one…Also, blacks have been voting for 40 + yrs, there have been 43 Presidents in the U.S.A, all of them WHITE, with 95% of blacks voting for them…Now, the 44th President that happens to be BLACK, with 95% of blacks voting for him…You WHITE people want to call it RACISM…What’s your problem? I voted for McCain not because he is white, but because I am a conservative. I believe in small government, I was not that happy about McCain but he was alot better choice than Obama who spends, spends spends, all the tax dollars I pay. I paid $8000 dollars in taxes last year, why would I want my money to go to all of the deadbeats who DO NOT work and do not want to work & just leach off the government
btw, if Colin Powell had run for president, I would have voted for him

The whites aren’t the people who scream “racism” every time something happens, so I’m not playing mind games. You’re still missing my point, though, but you’re working in the right direction in that if a white person did vote for McCain just because McCain is white, that’s just as racist as having it the other way around. No difference. And your comment about blacks voting for the other 43 white presidents isn’t really an issue–since until now there were no black candidates until now. What’s really interesting is that you seem to automatically have me white, but you really don’t know, and nothing I’ve said has been racist–except for those who want to make it that way. And for YOUR information, I did not vote, but if I had, it would have been for Obama. I still challenge anyone to read my posts and find anything but truth in them.
