The President Addresses African-American Unemployment?

Published by Pamela Gentry on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at 11:59 pm.

By Pamela Gentry, Senior Political Analyst

April 30, 2009 — President Barack Obama was asked more than a dozen questions Wednesday night during his third live news conference marking his 100th andre_showell21day in office.  BET correspondent Andre Showell was called upon by the president and asked the president about the growing concern of high unemployment in the nations Black community.

Andre Showell, BET Correspondent asked:   As the entire nation tries to climb out of this deep recession, in communities of color, the circumstances are far worse. The black unemployment rate, as you know, is in the double digits. And in New York City, for example, the black unemployment rate for men is near 50 percent.

My question to you tonight is given this unique and desperate circumstance, what specific policies can you point to that will target these communities and what’s the timetable for us to see tangible results?

President Obama responded: Well, keep in mind that every step we’re taking is designed to help all people. But, folks who are most vulnerable are most likely to be helped because they need the most help.

So when we passed the Recovery Act, for example, and we put in place provisions that would extend unemployment insurance or allow you to keep your health insurance even if you’ve lost your job, that probably disproportionately impacted those communities that had lost their jobs. And unfortunately, the African-American community and the Latino community are probably overrepresented in those ranks.

When we put in place additional dollars for community health centers to ensure that people are still getting the help that they need, or we expand health insurance to millions more children through the Children’s Health Insurance Program, again, those probably disproportionately impact African-American and Latino families simply because they’re the ones who are most vulnerable. They have got higher rates of uninsured in their communities.

So my general approach is that if the economy is strong, that will lift all boats as long as it is also supported by, for example, strategies around college affordability and job training, tax cuts for working families as opposed to the wealthiest that level the playing field and ensure bottom-up economic growth.

And I’m confident that that will help the African-American community live out the American dream at the same time that it’s helping communities all across the country.

Do you think the president is on the right track?

We need people from this community who have knowledge of recording streaming video’s, who will commit to keeping historical records of Obama’s speeches, conferences, etc.

I see that the news stations can’t be depended on to do it. Wednesday evening (April 29, 2009) FOX refused to air President’s Obama’s 100 DAY press conference. Unfortunately, this shows how hateful people can be.

It seems like he is more interested in helping the “Latinos” than anyone. hmmm

How the hell is Fox hateful…Obama gives a speech a day.

If we don’t get a handle on education in our communities, unemployment will strike us first. there is but so much Obama can do.

Ya’ll looking for toooooo much from Obama. He’s the president of ALL America not just Black America.

Benita Collins said on April 30th, 2009

Black people, my people. First of all, why is BET still asking the same dry questions to THE PRESIDENT of THESE UNITED STATES. First you supported Hillary, Now you still think the Black baby doll is dirty I guess. I cant figure it out. Slave mentality all the way from the North to the South. Unbelievable for Mr. Showell to waste his opportunity with that old dry question. Didnt you hear our president when Tavis Smiley started getting intimidated by a black man “making it”. He , President Barack Obama said he was trying to become the president of the United States of America. Not Black America. You all need to get over it. I dont support your stations because I dont see any support of uplifting of our young black males, just trash and negativity. And sisters you should be able to just look in the mirror and be encouraged, but if you can’t – look at our First Lady. Unbelievable. This is our country and it is diverse and God plans for us to love ALL. Get over yourselves. If you are going to send a reporter, review your status and values, and send someone who will represent most black people, not angry dissatified. The world is looking at us to represent. And as for the Latino comment by Karrie. Gee…first of all you are watching Fox News, do they look like you or share your values? Of all stations, come on… Grow up and get your own value system. He is respecting all. Think about it BET, he had every opportunity to marry a white woman, with his history. He chose to follow his heart and soul. And love HIS people. Now get over yourselves BET supporters and ask yourself, ” What am I doing in my OWN community and family to make a difference in the world?” BC

Lola said on April 30th, 2009

Kudos to Benita. She hit it right on the spot. I didn’t even realize the reporter was from BET. That was so embarrassing for him to ask such a question. We wonder why we are separated from America. We separate ourselves. Instead of saying “Black” why not use African American. I was impress that President Obama addressed us as African American and not just a color. We need to rise up from the negativity and realize that we have come a long way. Why miss the opportunity to ask a substance question with a stupid question. We have more control of our personal lives than we give ourselves credit for. While you are out of work, why not take advantage to get a better education and maybe just maybe you will find a better job than the one you lost.

tony32126 said on April 30th, 2009

It was a valid question from BET. 50% unemployment is a catastrophe. I don’t expect any President to solely, solve an issue like this, but the question posed to him, makes him aware of it. Summer’s gonna be brutal.

seschris said on April 30th, 2009

I agree that expecting President Obama to cater to our community exclusively is unreasonable because he is the president for all of us regardless of race. Even though that is exactly what Bush did; cater to his own community for 8 years. When the economy is poor African Americans suffer severely so when the economy improves our community will improve as well by default. WE WANTED CHANGE! Think about it…contrary to what some people say, most of us African Americans voted for President Obama because we wanted a fair president not another biased president. We wanted change; not more of the same old political special interest mess. At the same time the playing field needs to be leveled in certain areas to allow African Americans more access to the same resources that lead whites to success. Certain barriers must be removed from the African American community to succeed. But our job did not end when we voted on Nov. 4th we still have much work to do to assist in our own success. We cannot vote and then sit down and wait for change to come to our living room. That is a recipe for sure and swift failure!

Shawn Stuckey said on April 30th, 2009

I think President Obama addressed the black unemployment question appropriately…What would Showell have liked for the President to say? He is The President of the United States, and not just of black people. We are Americans and we need to stop addressing our issues from a color perspective, and start taking advantage of the programs, and benefits that help will propel us from our slave mentality (which we all know what that kind of thinking is). Unemployment is an issue for entire U.S.A. The nearly 50% of black men in New York that are unemployed, I think is a whole separate conversation period. President Obama has personally showed us as a black man that education plays a significant role to competing in the job market. And because he believes so strongly in education is why he has earmarked funds to make education more attainable. So, let’s take advantage of unemployment and return to school and become the dynamic & innovation people we are, and stop looking for a “hook up”. Education will help us level our marketability, even in these harsh economic times.

Andre Showell asked the single best and most important question at last night’s Presidential news conference — not only for African-Americans, Latinos and other “communities of color”, for all Americans, particularly the 15.2 million now unemployed, discouraged or what BLS labels “marginally attached”.

My blog post last night highlighted Andre’s question and the larger issues, as well as my view that the President knows we must do more — a lot more.

Come on people The president has to look out for all americans. Not just one ethnic group. Give change a chance to happen. The first 100 days we are expecting wonders to happen. It took Pres. Bush 8 yrs to create this mess. It’s probrably going to take 20 yrs to straighten this mess out. Everything that Pres. Obama does is under a microscope. So set back and see where his policies are going to take us. You sit back for eight years.

I have known President Obama when know one was considering him as a public official. Having said that, I think Obama has changed his position concerning African Americans or ‘Blacks’ as I would like to be recognized as. It only becomes a problem when we raise an issue. Do you jump on the European Jews for forcing our kids to remember the Holocaust and not the strocities of salvery?hell No! Barack needs to stop placating the Hispanic population because they are a growing voting population. What about him making sure that 300,000 illegal immigrants benefit from the stimulus package. I am tired of people giving $20 billion dollars in Food Stamps thinking that it is helping Black People when the Hispanics and Whites are benefitting the most. Obama is playing the let me slide pass that word “Black” game. I am salty at the fact that he acts like doing anything for ‘Blacks’ is contagious.. He reminds me of Ross perot wit That ‘You People’ attitude. Why don’t he take the same Attitude with the Jews and Hispancs and Foreigners instead of just the ‘Blacks.’ I know the real Barack O’bama and that is not him. It is a control freaked out by the Jews who run this country. Read my book and look at the pictures of Barack back then and look at him now, he don’t look the same. http://www.publishersgraphicsbookstore.com/The-No-Way-Out-Syndrome–Robert-Taylor-Homes-Coup-detat-by-Tyrone-Galtney_p_374.html

Benita Collins, I could not have said it better if we were joined at the hip.
Fantastic response to the ignorance that permeates this forum and these
news outlets. Fox cable news is an albatros to African-Americans , these guys make no bones of their hatred for African-Americans except their tokens who they use to rebuttled progressive blacks (i.e. Michael “kissing Limbaugh’s fat butt ” Steele, Alan Keyes, Juan Williams) come on black people when you watch that garbage you support their sponsors. And lastly
President Obama is Not a civil rights leader he is President of ALL America.
Stay out of the mind-set of always being a victim, stop always depending on
someone else to do for us, this is a Welfare mentality!

dennis ambers said on April 30th, 2009

How can we expect President Obama to help when we do not help ourselves. Are you aware that African American publications such as Essence hire mostly non-African American photographers. Look at the latest issue where Essence hire a white photographer to go to the White House to photograph the First Lady and her mother. There are a many talented African American photographers who could have done a great job. But Essence again chose to give the job to a white photographer. This is just one area of unemployment but an important area in the same mentality of African American giving our own valuable jobs away – We must help ourselves if we would like help.

ric said on April 30th, 2009

The question asked was ridiculous. The African – American community need to help itself and stop blaming whites and FOX News who have nothing to do with the problems facing the black communities. Promotion of gangster rap to young kids, having countless children out of wed-lock and black fathers not being part of their children’s lives are the key problem areas. I can say this because I am white, and can objectively observe this situation from the “outside looking in “.

@Valerie
There are records of telecast keep for the public. Also, these days’ people post everything on YouTube. Most importantly about YouTube they post the things the media and government doesn’t want you to see. Lastly Fox caters to Fox’s audience just like Bet and CNN and MSNBC does theirs.
*
@Lola
I agree that we separate ourselves but; don’t get all worked up about being called Black and not African American. They both represent de-characterization. The truth is that we are Moorish people, Moroccan decedents that were in this land before Columbus or slavery. Look that up!
*
@seschris
You have to get off this Bush stuff as if Obama’s people aren’t Bush’s people.
*
Now in general, what can one expect from a BET correspondent when speaking to the president other than an inappropriately timed and irrelevant question? I would have been more impressed if Barack leaned back, fanned his mouth and yelled BORING!
*
Moving right along, Pamela J. Gentry you went on CNN last night, as you sometimes do. One would assume from this blog that you would have every intention on defending the interest of Black people and President Obama. Well I found it moderately surprising that as Farred Zakaria and David Gergen stated and then reiterated the fact that Barack Obama has no interest in having a discussion about race or the state of Black America, that you Pamela Gentry, you had no rebuttal. You just set there, silent. And as I looked closely at the TV you know what I saw; I saw a sell out.

GROUP. I AM NOT IN A SPACE WHERE WHITE AMERICA THINK THE SAME AS YOU DO. THEY TO WANT BUSINESS AS USUAL. THERE IS CORPORATE GREED AND MISMANAGE BUSINESSES AND THEY WERE IN CHARGE. THEY HAVE A PROBLEM BECAUSE THEY WANT HIM TO MAKE EVERYTHING GO AWAY WHEN THEY ARE AT THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM.

American we need to try and help ourself and each other and get our kids off the street and enforce to to get educated, because they will need too to compete with other people. And hopefully some of our business people will get some of the money to help with jobs in our communites.

I am really done with BET. How did you even fix your mouth to ask such an ignorant question like that, and tried to put President Barrack on the spot like that. Did you ever ask BUSH how was he going to help black america. And your coorrespondent “Andre” had the ordasty to smile as if he accomplished something big….He is no better that FOX news. Personally I think BET and Andre owes the President a public apology, and you have not heard the last of me.

ALL people need to get up off their buttocks and do there part to help themselves and try to help each other. As a matter of fact why don’t you help your BLACK community. You can start by giving the 50% of black men in NY a job…….How about that.

I wish he would have also asked him what be was going to do to help facilitate black capitalism in the black community so we could create and sustain more of our own jobs. Apparently whitey is only going to hire most of us for the jobs that he doesn’t want to do. No amount of education or stimulus in the majority population will change that but we can definitely use some help with our own businesses right now in this recession and beyond. Rather than focusing on job creation in the general population for blacks and disregarding black men who are the back bones of the black community it would help everyone, all races, as he so likes to say if he would invest in black businesses in the black community to create small business and jobs where there aren’t any. Just another excuse to support the white mans agenda by keeping is on the bottom and not assisting us to build for ourselves. I guess that since we are a minority it really doesn’t matter. The white man would never allow his businesses and major corporations to fall apart. Look at all the bailout money they recieved as proof. But when it comes to the black man and his community all the votes Obama got from us doesn’t seem to matter.
