Everybody Has a Bad Day: Even the First Lady

May 14, 2009 – First Lady Michelle Obama continued her outreach around D.C., and her support of community-based programs, with a visit to the Ferebee Hope Community School located in Southeast Washington Wednesday.

The first lady has made several visits to community organizations, schools and federal agencies to encourage and salute the folks who are making a difference in the community she now calls home.

Since moving to the District of Columbia the first family has made an effort to see other faces of capital city outside the walls of the White House.  That’s what led her to visit third grade students at Ferebee Hope Elementary School. 

The school was selected because of its participation in “Community In Schools” after-school program.  The program provides 45-minute one-on-one tutoring for students weekly and is the largest dropout prevention program in the country.

During Mrs. Obama’s visit she read the book, “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” by Judith Viorst to the students.  The story is about Alexander’s bad day; for those of you who haven’t read it, the day doesn’t end much better than it started.  

With all that talk about bad days, the first lady comforted students saying, “Every day isn’t a good day, right?  Nobody’s life is perfect and nobody is going to have a great day every day.  Everybody has a bad day — even me.”

That prompted the question: “How does it feel to be to be the First Lady?”  Mrs.Obama said, “You know, it probably feels like being a mom, except a lot of people are watching what you do.  I spend a lot of time thinking about my girls and how to make their life better, and how to make your lives better, because when I come here and I see you guys, I think of my girls.”

“I read to them just like I’m reading to you.  I want them to be good readers like I want you all to be good readers, and to love learning and to love books, because it just makes life easier for you.  And it’s more fun when you learn how to read.  So I like my job because I get to come and see you all and talk to you all.  And that’s the best part of my day,” she said.

Before leaving, the first lady posed for pictures with the students, autographed a keepsake for the school and provided hugs and high-fives for students. 

I have no doubt this visit from the first lady will make the list of “good days” for the students at Ferebee Hope Elementary School.
