President’s Pow Wow with Members of Congress

Oct. 6, 2009 – Eight U.S. soldiers were killed near the Afghan and Pakistan border on Saturday just as President Obama, his national security team and his ground commanders plunged into the debate on the next steps to take in the eight-year war. 
The conflict has intensified in recent months and so has the tension between the president and Congress. This could be the reason Obama has invited members of Congress to the White House Tuesday for a briefing on Afghanistan.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters during Monday’s briefing, the president will “walk them through where we are in (the) process and solicit their views.”
Gibbs added, that the president has not made any decision as of yet on sending extra troops. Lawmakers from both parties have been invited and Gibbs said the president’s meeting is to hear all opinions on the war.
Obama may find some Democrats a tough sell on sending more troops to the Afghanistan. Some Dems were early opponents to the conflict that has lasted longer than expected and remains unpopular with those members of Congress firmly against an insurgency of troops in an already volatile, dangerous territory.
One outspoken longtime opponent, Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), is a member of a group of Democrats who have introduced legislation to the House of Representatives to block the deployment of any additional troops by prohibiting the use of funds to support troop increases.
Lee said, “As we consider the possibility of further entrenching United States Armed Forces by sending significantly more brave men and women in uniform into harm’s way, this legislation sends a clear message in opposition to this course of action.”
It’s really hard to tell who will have the most influence on the president’s decision. But one thing is for sure, the U.S. commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, has publicly said he needs 40,000 more U.S. troops in Afghanistan to be successful.
Let’s see if he gets what he wants.

good strategy, mr. president but this raises the stakes on any decision u make. After careful deliberation, people will expect nothing less than victory.
I wish that Obama would do what he promised during the campaign. I understand that there are road blocks in front of him, but he needs to be more assertive. Even SNL is making fun of his lack of accomplishments so far.
We should pull out of both wars as soon as possible. Why do we act as if we have to have an American presence in all parts of the world. I wish that we would handle the problems with our own country first before we try to fix others

OBAMA is the best president
Until USA improve its army image 2 its muslim neighbours it will ever b seen as an agressor.
Sending mo troops does’nt help save the face of the Goverment or prevent mo Us troops from further deaths.
The Arab world has made it known that it does’nt want unnecessary foreign invasion on its soil.
OB is seen as the new face of the USA & how we approach things hopefully this will come 2 a fruition.

A thought to remember; IF YOU CANT TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF HOW CAN YOU TAKE CARE OF ANYONE ELSE? America is the country that everyone is watching. I belive that this IS AN UNNESSARY CONFLICT! no we should not send any more troops, what we should do is send the convicted murders, rapists, and child molesters, over there and put them on the front lines. especially those that are in jail for life, death row.
Theirs poor people and the militants and merchants, where are you putting them across the land.. looks like their is not set area for them to be and no accepted political party for either side. to spread democracy was the sole purpose of this war. Looks real disorganized.. everybody running in circles.. so if we send more.. the issues still remains instead of we fighting them to we got em and don’t know where to put em… if we already control the skies and they shooting at the air… why don’t we know where to put them.. I Say a no to more troops and Yes to a we control the flat lands.. and the air… Where we gonna put em…
and why ain’t Colin Powell as an advisor. he is the general With a successful invasion in the middle east. lasting only a month.
