A Bow of Respect – Not Surrender

By Pamela Gentry, Senior Political Analyst

Nov.  17, 2009 – There seems to be no end to the criticism of President Barack Obama, and now conservative  commentators are seizing on his bow to Japan’s emperor during his visit to Japan likening his actions to “groveling”  to a foreign leader.

Let’s be serious, the president would have had to bow regaobama_bow_APrdless, Emperor Akihito is short – not to mention he was following protocol by doing so.  It sound a bit silly to be discussing and analyzing not only the bow – but how low the president bowed his head.

The president greeted Akihito, the son of the man who ruled when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941, with a simultaneous handshake and a deep bow.  The bow brought the 6’-1½’ president’s head below Akihito for just a few seconds.

I doubt the president’s bow to the emperor of country that is our ally will weaken the U.S.‘s  status or that of the leader of the free world?  Obama acted out of respect for his host, and there is nothing wrong with exhibiting respect and power at the same time.

The State Department does have guidelines for foreign visits. In the 2007 “Protocol for the Modern Diplomat,” emissaries are advised to be aware of greeting rituals such as kisses, handshakes or bows and to follow a country’s tradition. “Failure to abide with tradition may be interpreted as rudeness or a lack of respect for colleagues,” it says. Of course this may not apply to the president, but good protocol is a suggested form of behavior.

Obama isn’t the first president to bow to a foreign head of state.  Ian Kelly, State Department spokesman, told reporters that the bow was “a sign of respect to the emperor.”

The bottom line is the bow isn’t a threat to our national security.  Let’s move on, and remember how much Obama has improved America’s international image by being respectful rather than arrogant.

What do you think, was the president showing respect or weakness with the bow?

Bowing is a traditional gesture of respect in many asian cultures. It has nothing to do with him being the leader of the free world.Enough of the cowboy diplomacy mentality which got this country in trouble with a bogus war looking for non exsitent WMDs’ and popularity plunge around the world.
When Bush kissed the king of Saudi Arabia no “wrong wingers” said a word but because many people can’t stand the fact a man of color is President there is a diarrhea of pointless critisism.

rednblack said on November 17th, 2009

Pam….you couldnt be more WRONG!
NO other leader bowed!! By the way did you notice the Emporor did not bow to Obama
The Japanese were embarassed so much they would even play clips of Obamas meeting with Akihito
Obama loved by many…Feared by none!

jfffnn said on November 17th, 2009

Anther thing, why the hell would any nation fear the United States or President Obama when it has been proven in Iraq and Afghanitan that cowboy dipomacy does not work ?

rednblack said on November 17th, 2009

Here you go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5U6fL7Y4BZA
I agree in reality it is not so much a big deal; however, putting ALL of Obamas non verbal and verbal messages together such as:
1. Bowing to the Saudi King
2. In ability to develop a coherent plan in Afghanistan
3. Bowing to the Japanese Emporor
4. “Blame America First” when speaking abroad
5. Groveling to China for more money via purchasing of our Treasury notes
6. Weakness with terrorists (Sheik Mohamad)
7. Weakness with North Korea and Iran
8. Weakness with Russias leader Putin
These together paint a picture of a weak and effiminate leader who will be abused by our enemies

jfffnn said on November 17th, 2009

Which do you prefer Bush kissing the Saudi king or Obama out of respect bowing? It is Asian custom to bow so I don’t see anything wrong with that. If the U.S. is to blame, then fess up and move on. It was Bush that stated borrowing money from China to finance uneedded wars and finance tax cuts for the reach, there is plenty wrong with that. What weakness with terroist or is that some faux b.s.? What weakness with N. Korea ? The bush admin. knew about that and did nothing, the same with Iran, why no complaints then ? There was no weakness with Putin, infact I recall Bush’s statrment about him lokking into Puntins eyes;Where are the compaints about that. All toghther you paint a one sided picture staight out of faux.Anther thing is I recall the old U.S.S.R could not handle Afghanistan,Do you or do you suffer from selective memory sendrome ?

It is so sad that these uneducated, leap before you look informers always have lies to tell, before you post a comment, please no the facts.
1. George W. Bush inherited a healthy economy via Bill Clinton, but squandered it within six months of his presidency because of 2 wars he embarked upon. We, meaning America is in deep trouble not because of Obama but because of 8 years of mindless policies of the Republicans…enough said.

It was a warm feeling, realizing that our president is a civilized human being that respects and honors other civilized humans around the world. This arrogant stance of lots of american citizens with over inflated egos that believe that every other human on the planet should bow to the U.S. is a belief that I believe continues to create more of a climate of war and not of peace throughout the world. What is the real reason that the right wing conservative population of america continues to give their prejorative spin on most all that President Obama does????????????

I wanted to have intellectual discussions on this web page but I see it’s no better than going on any of the gossiping blogs. Please, don’t let the media sway your opinion about our President. Every little thing he does has to be justified when Bush freely did what he wanted to do with apparently no consequences. I think that President Obama is doing a wonderful job as President and if the media would stop scrutinizing everything he does and let him work we wouldn’t have any problems. Now, he’s taking too long to make a decision about sending troops to Afghanistan when he said himself this is a life and death situation of America’s troops and it is not to be taken lightly. He knows what he’s doing and I find it appalling that he has to constantly explain himself.

rednblack said on November 19th, 2009

Go ahead and be intellectual……please provide any tangible “real” accomplishments of THIS Administration:(We all know Bush was a failure so leave him out: He is no longer the President)
Thank you, and I look forward to your response.

jfffnn said on November 20th, 2009

Not so fast on dimissing Bush because the mess he left still exist. You seem to think President Obama should clean this mess up in less than a year after eight years of mess ups.

rednblack said on November 20th, 2009

Obama is NOT cleaning anything up. His cadre of Czars and subsequent policies are only creating a MUCH larger mess!
Obama is quickly becoming an object of ridicule, which is a bad sign for any leader.
Once again, someone please provide one REAL tangible success of this administration

jfffnn said on November 20th, 2009

you seem to think he can do alot without congress.Just be patient ,when congress acts the sucess will be visible. You still can’t seem realize that what he is trying to do is reverse eight years if mismanagement.

rednblack said on November 20th, 2009

I know it is difficult to find “one” success of this administration; however, anyone can enumerate a myriad of his failures. How about this:
African American Unemployement rate on 1/19/2009 = 8.2%
African American Unemployement rate on 11/19/09 = 15.7%
Not much hope there my friend

jfffnn said on November 20th, 2009

you seem to be grasping at straws when you blame the unemployment rate on Obama. The unemployment rate is the result of eight years of Bush, albeit you will never admit to that.Tell me is President Obama a poltician or a magician ?

rednblack said on November 20th, 2009

Bush and the Democratic Congress built the fire……. unfortunately your biased eyes fail to see Obama and his Democratic Congress POURING Gasoline on that Fire!
You can go back 2 years and read my posts blasting both Bush and Obama for their destructive policies. Furthermore, in those posts I predicted exactly what would happen and I provided many suggestions on how to protect your families financies. For example, if you followed my recomendations to invest in Gold and Silver holdings you would have made a small fortune.
Its my hope one day you will take your Obama tinted glasses off and see the real world. The policies Obama has implemented and attempting to implement have a 100% FAILURE RATE…..They have NEVER worked in the 6,000+ years of mankinds History!
Hence, that is why it is near impossible to find an Obama real and tangible success

jfffnn said on November 21st, 2009

Two years ago Obama was not really in the picture aside from him being a junior senator and running for President, therefore he was not a policy maker.Nice try but it won’t work with me. My eyes are not either tinted or biased.Exactly what policies in six thousand years of mankind are you talking about ? If it’s healthcare, people in Canada,China and the U.K. seem to like it,if they didn’t they would not have it;It would have been abolished years ago.Like I mentioned in previous post, once the policies are implemented people like them. That is why social security, medicare and medicaid will never be abolished.

gemmie said on November 22nd, 2009

Man, it took me a while to find this page but I finaly did. President Obama is the leader of this country and therefore also our example. He simply showed the Japanese Emperor reverence. If we all show reverence to each other there would be a lot less meaness in the world.

rednblack said on November 23rd, 2009

I have appreciated our civil discourse on policies. In regards to an historical perspective, the current policies being followed by the US Govt have a 100% Failure rate. ALL countries who have implemented vast social “marxist” programs are failing and are looking for ways to rescind them….just look at how Europe is attempting to reverse course and note the many WARNINGS they are sending our way to NOT follow thier lead.
The other MAJOR historical problem we have is our DEBT>!!! We are buried with debt and Obama’s policies have accelerated our debt like no one before him. Obamas policies are DESTROYING the treasury!
You can research what happened to Argentina and the Weimar Republic to see what is coming to the US. However, if you really want to see what will become of the US, study the downfall of the Roman Empire.
In short, Rome fell because of their: Foriegn Wars, Massive Social programs, Raiding of the treasury, Over taxation, crushing debt. and the eventual devaluation of their currency.

rednblack said on November 23rd, 2009

There are two kinds of people. Those that are prepared and plan for the future and those that walk blindly and most certainly face mitigated hardships,
NO nation has ever spent itself out of debt. Obamas economic policies and social programs will “OVERLOAD” the system and eventually cause its collapse.
I predict: a collapse of the dollar, pervasive unemployement, extremely high inflation and eventual civil unrest that quite possibly will be bloody.

jfffnn said on November 23rd, 2009

I also appreciate our diageement because we do not resort to name calling. I disagree with your historcal perpective because in short, that was then and this is now.The one thing that makes me laugh is that consevatives seem to forget that time moves foward.

I have yet to read reputable reports about any nation that has national health issurance wanting to reverse course.Infact most people in those nations want to retain it.If you have info. sans faux please let me know

I thought about this situatin a bit over the weekend and it occurs to me that one of the upside to anational health isurance is that if enough people sign up it allows companies to hire more people because many people get there heatlth coverage via the empolyers as part of the compensation package. When companies and small and large are not saddled with that expense it alows them to hire more workers

I don’t like the term “healthcare reform” when there is nothing done about the high cost.Reducing cost and premiums along with tort reform in my mind equals reform. I would like for you to read the artical in Huffingtonpost.com about the 13 year old boy who prosthetic arm and is outgrowing the one that he has,yet he can’t get one because his present health insurance has been exhausted, this is why there is a need for “health insurance reform”

jfffnn said on November 23rd, 2009

I have heard from many “wrongwingers” that the national debt is irrelevant.I am are talking about people who can’t afford exuberant cost of healthcare and you are talking about debt.As a physician which is more important,do you want to count beans or treat and cure people ?

Abderrahman said on November 25th, 2009

Bowing to others never always mean fear or surrender to that person. that’s what we call respect and expressing gratitude to old people: go read about Arabic culture brother and check on relationship between old and young. let’s have broaden minds not closed ones

rednblack said on November 25th, 2009

I care to serve my patients. However, the real world forces you to count the “beans” also.
Most importantly, very few Physicians are in favor of Government Healthcare not only because of the government “beancounters” but the fact the beuraucrats inhibit quality healthcare.
