About

“Pamela on Politics” is one of the first political blogs created to comment on Washington politics from the African-American perspective. BET News Senior Political Producer Pamela Gentry kicked off the blog in the days following Hurricane Katrina to report on the outrage and frustration felt by Black lawmakers because of the slow federal response to the tragedy.

The blog has become a sounding board for Black Americans to ask tough questions of their lawmakers; an eye that examines the impact Washington policy has on readers’ lives; and a front-row ticket pass to one of the most historic and exciting presidential races in American history.

The blog’s author pulls in her broadcast experience to create informative, clear-cut and thought-provoking commentary on issues being addressed by the United States Congress and the White House.

To insure her coverage offers more than other mainstream media outlets, she always includes the perspective of African-American national and local elected officials as well as political watchers and Black policy experts. The goal is always to deliver accurate and compelling coverage as well as include underreported stories and insider information on breaking news stories.

How are you Ms. Gentry.

I just read your political blog today, and was very much impressed by it. I am new to the world of blogging but would like some feedback or advice on how to improve my political blog.

dear Pamela ,what is up with little or no participation when it comes to politics???? am i to believe more care about who’s album is dropping than what WILL effect them ???? politics i mean. I thoroughly enjoy checking on comments made and replying. where is everybody???? this is one of the few sites i blog because i am interested in where black people are on these issues not to just agree or disagree but just to see why in the answers whether thought is involved or just plain same old opinions expected.I am here to challenge old ideals ,excuses and thoughts and create dialog not indifference towards any, where is everyone???dont they care???further more i also want to challenge thoughts on who we elect and why.where are they Ms.Gentry???

I find myself asking the same question. Before we used this blogging tool we had a “discuss now” option for users and they commented daily. I’m hoping once they learn how to use this tool they will respond and provide feedback. We offer a point of view on BET that isn’t seen on other websites - I think they will come to appreciate it once they sign on. Thanks for your participation.

Hello, I recently receive an email on the JENA 6. It was really upsetting. It’s about 6 black teens who were expelled from school, arrested and charged with second-degree attempted murder. This happen last fall in Jena,Louisiana. There’s alot to this story and this is a story that needs to be heard. The website is http://www.colorofchange.org/jena/?id=2019-228436.
Please take a look at this site and hopefully bring this situation the media attention it needs. One of the 6 has already been sentenced, Please take the time and look into it.
It’s a story that reads like one from the Jim Crow era.
Thanks for your time

Shame on you for making a politcal thing of Ted Nugent into a racist story witch is not true. Get your facts right.

Vincent,
If you read carefully I did not. I simply asked the question if a rapper had pointed guns on state and talked in threating manner toward a political figure what would the response have been? Pamela

I just heard about Jena 6 a few days ago and my heart goes out to these young men. I have a story to tell about myself. I am originally from Texas, but my husband and I was transferred to Elizabeth City. NC in 1996. I have never been in any trouble until I moved to NC. I was charged and convicted of a misdemeanor in April of 1999. the judges and district attorneys did not acknowledge
my evidence. the women who accused me lied and changed their testimony.the jury was all white except 2 blacks. I was treated horrible and I have not been able to get decent jobs. I went to see a attorney on 9/17/07 and he told me that this misdemeanor will stay on my record for the rest of my life. I am 50 years old now. All of this has me very depressed and crying all the time. My hope for the future is hopeless now. I tried to contact Oprah Winfrey when this happened many years ago, but i did not get any feedback. I wish someone like Bet or Oprah will take time and hear my story because it will astonish the whole world. I am truly happy for those young men getting support from so many wonderful people, but I wish someone will listen to my story and help me. Please hear my story because it is not just happening in Jena, it is all over the world. If you do not believe that, just hear my Story. Sincerely Rose H. Eakins Crying out in North Carolina. My home phone number is 252-338-6108.
Please BET, Reverend Jesse Jackson, and Reverend Al Sharpton and whoever else will hear me out. September 20,2007

Hi There,

Keep up the good PR . The Democrats are doing a good job of posturing themselves not to win the White House in 2008. I am one biscotti who prays that they do not win. They are not able to lead our country. Their far far left agenda is not middle America’s cup of coffee.

You are very pretty Have you ever heard of Republican Larry Elder? He is heard on KABC radio and seen on Fox.

Have a wonderful day,
Rie

Robert Emanuel said on December 7th, 2007

Good morning. I’m not sure if you caught a hold of this story however it has been covered by local news media and even the White House has been given the story. It’s one of those incredible underdog stories that is perfect for the holiday season.

About half a year ago and with 43 cents in his pocket, Robert Emanuel set out to do what no municipality in the Tulsa area has been able to do even after ten years of trying. That is to provide public transportation for the 49,000 people living in the suburbs of Tulsa. The City Councils of the cities of Bixby, Leonard and other areas could not come up with the money nor reach an agreement that would satisfy all of those involved. Robert, a poor African American man living in a trailer home with a wife and three children proposed privatizing the venture, making it non-profit and receiving donations from local businesses. It was immediately rejected and every door shut. But after consistent knocking and petitioning, the local news paper, The Bixby Bulletin, picked up the story and the public demanded a hearing. Robert went to the City Council with 43 cents in photo copies and walked away with a unanimous vote on a resolution to use the City Streets to operate his bus line. Before long an independent survey showed about a 92% support base from the citizens. Local businesses however did not give financially to the project; so Robert went to Oklahoma City, and petitioned the State Transportation Board for the funds. He was rejected but kept at it and soon found himself in Ken LaRue’s office, the Transportation Director. “This is not normal. We only deal with City Governments and other government tied companies. Your’s is private. This is unusual.” Mr. LaRue went on to say, “if you’re non-profit, can’t you raise the money yourself? It would be better for all involved. The State Treasurer has gotten wind of this and we all applaud your efforts… is there anyone?” Robert told Ken that businesses and private citizens were watching to see if he would fail or succeed in Oklahoma City. Media coverage could in effect bring in the money, but there wasn’t enough coverage at the time. Ken shook his head and wondered how the business could operate in the black when, in his 23 years of experience, he has never seen it happen. But Robert continued and showed that a private company could operate in the black, unlike any other bus company in the State and provide better service. The meeting ended with Mr. LaRue wishing Robert the best and that he would pass the request onto his supervisor… something never done before.

Robert’s wish is to give a gift to the City of Bixby and the town surrounding it, a holiday gift that would last long past his life time. To do that he would simply need… exposure…

Dear Pamela J. Gentry,

I am so honored to be able to be on your site.

I myself, was fortunate to recently go to Washington D.C. for a reunion for http://www.peacechild.org and the international community.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart that you are so professional in your position with BET and Washington that you and BET have been such an example of peace as to invite Hillary Rodham Clinton on T.V.

MLK would be proud!:)

In addition… thank you for promoting WOMAN IN POLITICS.

“BET News profiles the woman who once stood before America in the East Wing and is now looking to lead America in the West Wing. Don’t miss the premiere, Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 10 p.m. (ET/PT):”

CITY AT PEACE…
Pamela J. Gentry,
It is very impressive to know that you are the senior political producer for BET News.
I thank God you joined BET in 2002 as the Washington bureau chief responsible for coverage of Capitol Hill. I appreciate your impact on the African-American community for all humankind and the world. Please take the time out of your busy schedule to look up this particular website. I believe that BET may be very interested regarding the next generations influenced by BET.
I wish for peace in the Black community.
