May 12, 2009 – It looks like First Lady Michelle Obama will continue her outreach role and her role as the “first hostess” this week with a full schedule. On Tuesday the first lady was scheduled to visit the Corporation for National and Community Service and tonight she’ll host an evening of poetry, music and the spoken word at the White House.

The East Room will limit the number of guest who can attend the performances up-close and personal, so the White House has decided to stream the event live on WhiteHouse.gov. It’s scheduled to start at 7:45 p.m., so check it out.
Mrs. Obama’s visit Monday to the agency that runs Senior Corps, AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps VISTA underscores her interest in community service and reflects on her early career where she worked with young folks in Chicago. You may recall she ran Public Allies, an AmeriCorps program to encourage young people who were interested in public service.
The self-proclaimed “Mom-in-Chief” has managed to keep her life – work balance since moving to Pennsylvania Avenue. Last Thursday while speaking on the importance of work schedule flexibility she said, [I’m in a] “very blessed situation, because I have what most families don’t have” — support from her mother and staff.
“Everyone should have a chief of staff and a set of personal assistants,” she said at a meeting of Corporate Voices for Working Families, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that works to help in the development and promotion of policies to benefit working families.
