Redskins Hire Zorn Over Meeks
February 9th, 2008
All eyes have been glued on Washington D.C. for the last month while Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has searched for a head coach to replace the legendary Joe Gibbs.
On Saturday, the search finally concluded.
Jim Zorn was hired as the new coach of the Redskins, beating out eight other candidates ranging from USC head coach Pete Carroll to former Redskins assistant Gregg Williams, who was fired from his offensive coordinator role during the interview process.
Zorn, formally the quarterbacks coach for the Seattle Seahawks, was originally hired as the Redskins offensive coordinator - - his highest coaching position until now - - onĀ Jan. 26, while Snyder waited to interview New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
Ron Meeks, the defensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts, was also a strong candidate for the gig, despite being a token selection to fulfill the NFL’s Rooney Rule, which states that a team must interview one minority candidate.
The fact that Meeks had multiple interviews with one of the league’s most prestigious jobs is a step in the right direction of hiring more African-American head coaches.
But it’s a little unsettling that Zorn, a white coach, went from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator to head coach in a span of three weeks.
Would Meeks, or any other African-American coach, be so fortunate?
No chance.
Enjoy your 8-8 season, Dan Snyder.
