The Denver Nuggets forward wasted no time making his bid for Dunk of the Year in their season opener Wednesday night.

J.R. Smith Spending Summer Behind Bars

While most NBA players will be working on their game during the offseason, Denver Nuggets guard will be trading his Nuggets jersey for a prison jumpsuit.

Smith was sentenced to 90 days in jail for causing an auto accident that killed his friend in June 2007. If Smith performs 500 hours of community service, the judge will reduce his jail time from 90 days to 30.

In 2007, Smith ran a stop sign and collided with another car outside Trenton, New Jersey, killing his friend after going 67 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone.

Losing his friend is punishment enough … unless you have 28 points on your driving record and have racked up two speeding tickets since the accident in 2007.

Clearly, J.R. wasn’t getting the message.

He will get props if he finds a way to Twitter from jail.

Carmelo Anthony To Miss 3 Weeks

The Denver Nuggets caught a bad break on Tuesday when it was announced that star forward Carmelo Anthony would miss at least three weeks with a broken bone in his shooting hand.

With ‘Melo, the Nuggets were off to a 24-12 start, their best since the 1976-77 season.

Without ‘Melo, the Nuggets could slowly see themselves slide down the standings in the Northwest Division.

Props to Carmelo for finishing the game last night with a broken hand.

There aren’t many athletes who could not only take the pain but be productive with only one good hand.

Does this mean Dick Vitale won’t be calling the Nuggets-Heats game on ESPN Wednesday night?

For the sake of my ears, let’s hope so.
