Lost in the shuffle of the Super Bowl on Sunday (Who knew the New Orleans Saints had so many fans?) was the interview with former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress from behind bars.

Burress explained to Bill Cowher that not only will he be back in the NFL but he will pick up where he left off.

“I will play,” Burress said. “I think I will come back in, and it will be like I never left.”

Riiiiiight.

(Ask Mike Vick how that’s working out.)

“You go into a lapse of judgment for a quick second because you’re thinking about only yourself,” Burress said on why he was carrying a gun in the first place. “It was a selfish decision. . . . I had my home broken into twice. When things like that happen, it takes your peace of mind away. It scares you a little bit and you say to yourself, ‘I don’t want to be in that situation.’”

The fact that athletes are targets is a legitimate concern but there are ways of getting protection so you aren’t the one left holding the unregistered gun.

And in case you’re keeping track for your fantasy team, Burress wouldn’t be back in the NFL until 2011 … when the league is expected to go on strike.

Keep your head up and gun away, Plaxico.

Just when one NFL player is putting his legal problems behind him, another one is getting ready for an orange jumpsuit.

Plaxico Burress pleaded guilty on Thursday to weapons charges and was sentenced to two years in prison.

So much for turning down that three-month plea deal.

You can kiss that NFL career goodbye, Plaxico.

His attorney, Benjamin Brafman, made a great point today saying if Plaxico was a regular guy, he probably would have never been arrested.

While this might be true, leave the gun at home if you know extra eyeballs are going to be in your direction.

In terms of how this compares to Vick’s crime, his actions were still more heinous and twisted than Burress.

Plaxico is guilty of just being a big ol’ dummy.

The Plaxico Burress saga continues as the wide receiver was indicted on two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of reckless endangerment on Monday in New York City.

He should have just been indicted on one count for being a dumb ass in the club.

Anyone who is reckless and dumb enough to shoot themselves in the leg has served enough punishment as it is.

His former teammate, Antonio Pierce, escaped without any charges from the grand jury and will avoid a league suspension from the NFL.

The unemployed Burress faces a minimum sentence of 3 1/2 years in prison if convicted.

Is anyone surprised anymore to hear (insert football player name here) is in trouble with the law?

When Plaxico is getting his 33 months behind bars, the next NFL star will get popped for a DUI or beating his wife and we will have another legal issue on our hands again.

And Roger Goodell will continue to drop the hammer.

Yawn.

Things aren’t looking good for New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress.

Burress, who is facing two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a loaded and unlicensed weapon, has been desperately seeking a plea deal with authorities before a scheduled court hearing on Tuesday.

As of Monday night, no deal had been reached. Tuesday’s court hearing will involve postponing the proceedings to a later date.

Even in a best-case scenario, Burress will still have to serve prison time as the New York District Attorney is looking to put away the star NFL wide-out for at least 12 months.

Out goes Michael Vick, in goes Plaxico Burress.

When you factor in the jail tme and a lengthy NFL suspension from Roger Goodell, Plax can all but kiss the 2009 season goodbye.

“All I will say is in the streets for me, there is no need for it. But if you come in between that door frame of my home, I am going to kill you. Hands down.”

The New York Giants suspended the bonehead wide receiver for four games and was placed on the non-football injury list after shooting himself in the thigh with a gun at a New York night club last weekend.

How long before the Giants terminate his contract and waive him?

The next team (and trust me, someone will sign him) will also have to deal with a possible NFL suspension once commissioner Roger Goodell comes up with his latest plan to teach the rest of his players a lesson.

All you fantasy football geeks, you might want to bench New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress next week.

Burress was suspended for one game by the Giants for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

He will sit out when Big Blue takes on the Seattle Seahawks on Oct. 5.

Not what New York needs after getting out to a 3-0 start.

According to Foxsports.com, Burress did not show up to work on Monday or return phone calls from the team.

If you and I don’t show up to work, we are probably getting fired.

Defensive end Michael Strahan has turned down an offer to return to the New York Giants and will stay retired.

With Osi Umenyiora gone for the season, the Giants have a gaping home on the defensive line, and the man with the gaping gap was their first phone call they made.

Strahan will start his broadcasting career next weekend as he makes his regular season debut on the NFL on FOX pregame show.

Just 24 hours after Jason Taylor getting traded to the Washington Redskins was the top NFL story, the New York Giants and New Orleans Saints completed a trade that has been in the works for months.

Upset tight end Jeremy Shockey was traded to the Saints for a second and fifth-round draft pick in 2009.

Trading Shockey leaves the Giants with a huge void at the tight end position, with their five tight ends having started just six games.

Meanwhile, the Saints offense just got that much better with the addition of the four-time Pro Bowler in Shockey.

Alongside Marques Colston and with the running back duo of Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush, New Orleans should be the favorites to win the NFC South.
