Steelers Win Super Bowl XLIII 27-23

Santonio Holmes

Wow.

Just wow.

So much for a boring matchup between “Dynasty” and the “Doormat.”

Thanks to a David Tyree/John Taylor-esque like catch by wide receiver Santonio Holmes, the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 for their sixth Super Bowl title.

Holmes was named the game’s Most Valuable Player for his 9-catch, 131-yard performance including the game-winner in the corner of the end zone with 35 seconds left.

Secretly, NFL commish Roger Goodell has to be bothered by the fact that a guy who admitted last week to selling drugs growing up (and who was busted for possession earlier in the season) won MVP.

Thoughts about the game?

Better than the Giants improbable victory over the Patriots last season?

Let The Super Bowl Hype Begin

Super Bowl

Now that Inauguration has come and gone, it’s time to focus on the next important thing on the calendar.

Super Bowl XLIII.

Two weeks of hype is not enough time to get the average football fan excited about Pittsburgh-Arizona.

No offense to the Cardinals, who I think have a great shot of pulling off the upset, but Arizona is not necessarily a hotbed for football.

On the flipside, the Steelers is one of the league’s greatest franchises and they are on the verge of winning their sixth Super Bowl.

Just based on what you saw last weekend, who is your early pick to win?

Super Bowl Hero Had Rocky Past

Published by Marcus Vanderberg on Monday, February 11, 2008 at 4:11 pm.

David TyreeThere is a great story in today’s New York Times about Super Bowl hero David Tyree.

Tyree, who caught the desperation pass from quarterback Eli Manning in the final two minutes of the Super Bowl, had struggled with drugs and alcohol prior to his success with the Giants.

The first time he can remember vomiting after drinking alcohol was in eighth grade. By his junior year at Montclair High School, he celebrated the same way after every football game — drinking a 40-ounce bottle of malt liquor and a half-pint of Jack Daniel’s whiskey, and smoking a blunt, a skinny cigar hollowed and filled with marijuana.

Tyree’s mother, Thelma, tolerated drug use in her home. She also smoked marijuana. Her philosophy, according to Tyree: “She would rather us be at home, acting the complete fool under her watch, than out on the streets, doing the same things and finding trouble that was definitely waiting for us. My house was a free-for-all.”

Tyree is now a born-again Christian who has started a non-profit organization that counsels teenagers.

Just one more reason why the Giants winning the Super Bowl made for a better storyline over the Patriots going 19-0.
