The WNBA Has Arrived: Sparks-Shock Brawl

July 22nd, 2008

Sparks-Shock

The WNBA has finally arrived!

The ladies are starting to brawl like the fellas in the NBA.

Late in the Los Angeles Sparks-Detroit Shock game, a fight broke out between Candace Parker and Pienette Pierson as the two women got tangled while contesting a free throw.

Pierson decided to go after Parker, who pulled the rope-a-dope on the Shock guard and flung her to the floor as all hell broke loose.

The benches cleared and Detroit assistant coach Rick Mahorn found himself in the middle of the melee, eerily similar to the 2004 Pistons-Pacers brawl at the Palace.

Except this time, instead of chasing Ron Artest, he was shoving Lisa Leslie to the floor.

You can be the judge after watching the video, but Leslie didn’t pull a Euro flop - - she had some help getting to the ground.

If Mahorn did indeed put his hands on a woman, he needs to be suspended for the rest of the season.

That’s one line you just don’t cross as a man.

DeLisha Milton-Jones, who had her homegirl’s back, hit Mahorn from behind and was ejected along with Parker, Leslie, and Pierson.

Lost in all this was the fact that Shock forward Cheryl Ford sprained her right knee and was wheeled off in a wheelchair after injuring herself while playing peacemaker.

The WNBA … it’s fightastic!

Rick Mahorn is an Ass! I represent Chi-Town and ever since the Bulls-Pistons rivalry he’s been a bully! Suspend him indefinately!

M. Williams said on July 23rd, 2008

Have you actually seen Rick Mahorn? If he had shoved Lisa Leslie, she would have been in the 5th row! Take a good look at the video. SHE actually takes a swipe AT him. Not a full fledge punch, but enough for him to throw his arm up as if to say “WTF”?! I am a woman and I don’t believe he was going after her any more than I was while watching from my couch!

Barbara said on July 23rd, 2008

Come on now. I don’t want to see the WNBA turn into this.

If Rick Mahorn did shove her, shame on him. I really can’t tell from the video, but it is NEVER okay to put your hands on a woman.

Hated to see this all transpire before my eyes, but by the time I’d seen the replay a few times I was LMAO seeing 5 foot Shannon Bobbitt taking a swing BIG-A__ Rick Mahorn.

wow who ever wrote this biased ass article needs to be banned…its not a clear enough shot to determine if he pushed her down or not. regardless of man woman or child though….he is the COACH of a womens team…he is protecting HIS players….i don’t see what the big deal is. he didn’t strike lisa leslie at all….there’s a difference between STRIKING a woman and trying to seperate players from fighting…HUGE difference. If anyone needs to be banned for life it’s the chick who hit Rick Mahorn, that was un-called for.

C-Rob said on July 23rd, 2008

I have to agree with what Blah said.

THE ARTICLE IS FLAWED AND SO IS THE WRITER !!

AS A WRITER ONE IS TO BE UNBIASED AND NEUTRAL, CLEARLY THE WRITER TRIED TO SAY RICK ” PUT HIS HANDS ON A WOMAN ” IN THE SENSE OF HITTING A WOMAN. NOT THE CASE HERE.

THE PUSH WAS JUST THAT, A PUSH AS IN BREAKING UP AND SEPARATING PEOPLE IN AN ALTERCATION.
THE FACT THAT SHE ( LISA ) IS A WOMAN HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.

THAT SUGGESTS THAT A MAN IN THAT INSTANCE JUST LET THE WOMEN FIGHT AND ONLY ANOTHER WOMAN CAN PUSH ( SEPARATE ) THE WOMEN IN A FIGHT >>> RIDICULOUS !!!

PERHAPS THE WRITER IS A WOMAN,
SUSPEND THE PEOPLE FIGHTING NOT RICK, ADDITIONALLY, THAT IS ABOUTAS MUCH EXCITEMENT AS THE WNBA HAS EVER HAD….

RLB said on July 23rd, 2008

Do not hit someone unless you want to be hit! I am a woman, I do not believe in a man putting his hands on a woman, but when you’re trying to break up a fight and you’re being hit and shoved in the back, by multiple players, somebody is bound to get tossed!

jen said on July 23rd, 2008

Rick Mahorne, should have gone to control his own players not throwing the other teams player around. He should have been pushing that one that got hurt not Lisa Leslie

The picture at top only leads you to believe one thing in that Rick Mahorn pushed down Lisa Leslie. However if you look at the video or even watched the game and listened to the commentors you would relize the perception of the picture is incorrect. Rebecca Lobo stated during the game while the regs were sorting everything out that the Lisa/Rick incident happened right in front of her and that Mahorn did not push her. She went on to say that when mahorn was seperating her from the crowd that she swing down trying to push awy his arms and when doing so lsot her balance. People it seems that even our own BET sometimes doe not tell the full story or should I say lead you in a direction for the truth . Being from Detroit and living away from the city I follow all Detroit teams and watch what ever games are on T.V. When looking at this thin when it happened and rewinding the TIVO to see who did what you actual see what Lobo stated at the game.

JAM said on July 23rd, 2008

That’s what happens when you play a physical sport. Since they want to act and play like men, then treat them the same way they do the NBA players when they get into a brawl. Ron Artest got suspended without pay for a whole season and that “so-called woman” that hit Rick Mahorn deserves the same treatment.

Niecie said on July 23rd, 2008

I watched the video several times and I can see where Mahorn did make contact with Lisa Leslie…however…I cannot say whether or not he pushed her. I believe that he was trying to separate her from the fight and in grabbing her or pushing her away, she lost her balance and fell. But, I was not there, so I cannot say what the push felt like…intentional or not. However, I do agree that the girl that punched him in the back should be disciplined because she was so not a part of the fight until she made herself part of it.
But, before all of this I don’t see why ol’ girl Pierson got so mad as to step up to Parker in the first place. I mean stuff like tripping someone up and all that happens during a game of basketball. She should be disciplined as well. If you look at the footage, Parker, was down and did not even get a chance to get up and do anything before Pierson went down. But, again, I wasnt there and there might be some little things I’m missing.
But for real, ladies should conduct themselves as such. When we look at the men and shake our heads at their silliness, it definitely looks the same when women act up.
Hopefully, this will be resolved soon though.

Before u go pretending u know what ur talking about, oh smart one, check ur facts. Ron Artest jumped into the stands and fought with spectators, not other players, hence the reason for his punishment. These are two completely different circumstances. Don’t come on here spewing garbage about gender

I feel like Parker was trying to get loose from Pierson who was holding her after the free throw which resulted in Pierson falling to the floor, as well as Parker. Pierson got her little feelings her and went after Parker and tried to punch her while she was still on the floor (a b!t@h move!). Everyone who saw that went buck wild. Definately not the place for a street brawl but very indicative of the fact that money doesn’t change who you are. If you see your friend, or loved one, or in this case team mate being attacked…its’s a natural reaction to go to their rescue and I think that’s what happened here. Players and Coaches, get ready to pull those wallets out and iron up your nice clothes because there will be some fines and suspensions….sad!

J McMillan said on July 23rd, 2008

Totally unacceptable behavior by ‘Bad Boy’, Rick Mahorn. Known as an enforcer in his NBA days alongside teammate, Bill Lambeer, Rick acted on his own instincts against the opposition. Would he have shoved his own players in the same manner to restrain them? NO and he didn’t direct his efforts of restraint against his own players. I would agree with his suspension for the rest of the season. What a JERK! For those of you who don’t understand physics or the forces of nature, if you ran into a brick wall you would come to an abrupt stop. You wouldn’t be propelled 10 feet backwards!!

JAM said on July 23rd, 2008

Damn Lady P, relax. This is not a male-female issue and as for the a$$hole reference I won’t even comment. (Some men do respect women no matter how abrasive they can be) My point is the women in the league shoud be subject to the same punishment as the men. They are both representing professional basketball. And as for Delisha, she was dead wrong for sucker punching that man in his head and you know it!! And honestly, I really don’t care what happens to any of them cause’ they don’t pay any bills in my house. I was just making comments.

RAVEN said on July 23rd, 2008

See this is where society goes wrong, we’re so caught on drama that we are blinded to make true judgement. This man was not trying to place his hands on Lisa, he was clearly trying to keep manners down. It looks as if it may have been out of reflex thinking that she wanted to continue with the other players physically. If you pay attention closely, when the other players begin to attack him, he was shocked and did not retaliate, so lets remain logical here, as adults. INSTEAD OF TAKING SOMETHING SO MINUTE AND RUNNING WITH IT, TRUTH HURTS, YET LIES KILL!!! GOSH!!!!!!!!

D. Alexander said on July 23rd, 2008

Why can’t we all just get along? The Coach was absolutely wrong and he needs to be held responsible for his actions. I pray that this is settled in an amicable way and the teams come together and apologize for what has happened. As for those injured, I pray that they are on the mend and ready to get back on the court.

To God be the GLORY!

Ms. Johnson said on July 23rd, 2008

Ok, first of all I can not even see Rick Mahorn taking a swing at a female unless now unless he was defending himself and hid players. And plus do you know how tall and big Rick is? I believe he was trying to break up the fight and of course other players felt they had to take the punk move and hit the man from behind which is truly a punk and selfish move on there part. If you want to do the right thing do this everyone that was participated in the brawl should either be fine or supspended for a certain amount of games. They do it in the NBA what’s the difference just because these are women, no I don’t think so…..

Kayla said on July 23rd, 2008

I was at that game and I saw everything that happened. Rick Mahorn wasn’t trying to push Lisa Leslie..Rick Mahorn was trying to break up the fight..Pleanette is a true fighter..Lisa Leslie had cleared up her part on Espn and I was right there when she did. There shall be no fines..At the most a 3 game suspension. Candace Parker should have not put her hands on Pleanette and earlier Candace Parker tried to step to Cheryl Ford..I wouldn’t mess with Cheryl Ford..She is a tall and big girl..thats my point..I saw this happen with my two on eyes..

Laurice said on July 23rd, 2008

I watched the game (on TV) as well as the many replays. As far as the shoving of Lisa, I wasn’t so sure it was an actual push. I thought hey, maybe he was trying to break things up….BUT after looking at the video over again and again, I’m not so sure. I say that because if you look at the video, when he “pushes” Lisa away, instead of turning around and walking away to help the other team members, he keeps walking toward Lisa as if to keep it going. Now one could argue that he was walking toward her to help her up, but I don’t know..

just a thought

Norma said on July 23rd, 2008

Mahorn was wrong for the push on Leslie. Leslie was only trying to free up her player from the bottom. Parker is a raisen star in the making. People are do not like her because she is pretty and really can play the sport. Pierson came after Parker to try and test her character. Parker needed to show that she is no push over because she is a very pretty lady , and will be tested at times. I hate what happen but the officals have to control the game better. Pierson was hanging all over Parker.

Anywhooo a brawl like tht is normal i say let the girls be. Now wht happened to Ford is sad cuz she jus was trying to stop it. But as for Lisa gettin pushed by Mahorn it was more of a trying to stop a fight type of push. he jus pushed her a little to hard.

Hey let ther girls play it ain’t nuffin diff. they jus ain’t guys lol

Scooby said on July 23rd, 2008

Candace Parker gets brownie points for not letting a veteran bully push her around. And as far as Mahorn……my only thing is why he felt the need to handle players from the other team. Let Cooper handle his players and you handle yours. Lisa Leslie is like 1/4 his size so we’ll c wat the league dcides.

JAM said on July 23rd, 2008

Lady P, the mere fact that you would call me ignorant and an ~%%##~~ just lets me know upfront that there’s nothing LADY about you so you should probably start your “male hatred therapy” by changing your user name. I was not making a male-female remark and i know exactly what Ron Artest did, so i’m not going to argue with you, but they should be fined just as they do the NBA players because they are all professionals!! Oh yeah, until you forgive him for whatever he did, you’ll probably never have another man again and spend all your time snapping on bloggers. (Poor baby)

Barbara said on July 23rd, 2008

I just watched the video and I was not surprised by Mahorn because I remember when he played basketball and he was a bully then. Regardless of the men should not hit womens thing, he should have not shoved her like that. Watching the incident via internet, you can actually see him pushing her more than once. He might not have pushed her that hard, but he did push her enough to where she fell to the ground. He should have been trying to control his players and let Coach Cooper control his team. As far as the Parker vs. Pierson, you can clearly see that both of them got tangled up with each other, but Pierson did overdue her part. When both of them went down, then they should have shrugged it off as an accident instead of intentionally. Then after Parker was trying to get up then Pierson should have went on by instead of trying to start a fight. Pierson should get the bulk of the fine and suspension. Now what I am not understanding is how did Leslie get ejected and I did not see her do anything? I do however agree that Jones should be suspended for a game for hitting Mahorn in the back. I guess we will have to see what happens when everything is said and done.

Leslie will whoop that ass, especially when it comes to the Los Angeles
Sparks and the Detroit Shocks. Speaking of Detroit, that city got a strange
reputation of fighting. First the Pistons now the Shocks. Next thing you know
the Lions will join the club. If they’ll ever make it to the Superbowl. This is
just getting out of hand in the sports industry, everyone’s fighting and that’s
just plain rediculous.

Keyz said on July 23rd, 2008

Well from the view that I saw the whole situation. The coach went to the middle of where the whole fight was taking place and just started breaking the fight up. And then lisa came up and tryed to be involved in the confrontation and he just pushed her back. And if you guys actually listen to the video, you can hear him say “I got you” when he realized she was falling. But before he knew it the other team members were hitting him. You can also hear him say “Go back to the bench”. So in his defense he was only trying to break up the fight. And if you look, there is another detroit player that is on the other side of the coach that is also trying to break up the fight. She one of the only white girls out there…………………….
Anyways…………….guys don’t make this a woman/man thing. His push was not what you guys are thinking. Hey I’m a woman too and I can see the whole issue for what it is. Lisa shouldn’t have ran up like that. She knew better and in the process she got embrassed from an accidental fall. Point blank……………

But to be honest this fight did make the WNBA a whole lot more interesting. I think I might watch a game or two now…………………….

I watch the interview were Lisa says that it wasn’t intentional, she tried to maneuver around Rick and yes if you seen him he’s a big bear to get around, but she stated that he wasn’t trying to hurt her in anyway just trying to keep players away from other players, this picture is a bad picture and BET.com needs to stop trying to start arguments over nothing. But to say I was always taught to never hit anybody man/or women, but if someone hits you hit them back, but now things have kind of change you should never hit a women but also women shouldn’t hit a man either cause some men are just plan crazy but yeah everybody out there do the right thing

I have sat and read all of the comments that individuals have written and find some to be down right hilarious, while others have hit the nail right on the head. There is no way with or without the video to confirm it that asst. coach: Rick Mahorn was trying to intentionally harm Lisa leslie of the sparks. Many of you continue to bring his size into this argument while still stating that, “No man should put their hands on a woman.” Well regardless to whether a man is as big as Mr. Mahorn or as small as Snoop dog he still should not put his hands on a woman. But at the same token a woman should not put her hands on a man either, we cannot have it one way and not the other. I watched the video and Mr. Mahorn was attempting to do the right thing. He was trying to separate the players and a unfortunate accident happened in the process. Even Ms. Leslie has stated for the record that it was not an intentional push, so that in itself shoulf surface. Now as for all of you haters who continue to want to try to kick a good man while you believe his down, “Get a real Life.” The majority of you who are clowning on Mr. Mahorn and his yesteryear title of “Badboy” seem to come from cities that house the teams that we here in Detroit use to beat up on. Can’t you all just get over it and move on. This is 2008 not 1989 or 1990! Mr. Mahorn and Mr. Laimbeer are coaches now not players.

Even though it is sad …. It is also good … you really don’t hear too much about the WNBA like you used to … so (as I am sad to say this) any publicity is good publicity ….. LADIES GET YOURS!!!

Ok, ok, let’s all calm down. This was bound to happen sooner or later and I’m glad it did now you can see that these women are pro ball players just like men. People these women are ATHLETES. They take their profession very seriously. When in the heat of the moment they react like all athletes do, man or woman. Emotions were running high and tempers were flaring like they sometimes do in a game, men or women. Pierson was wrong when she went after Parker. They just got tangled up like players sometimes do, it’s part of the game. You just get up and keep going. But she took it to another level when she got up and went straight for Parker. Parker wasn’t even all the way up off the ground when Pierson walked up on her. That was a punk move! Pierson should be fined not Parker. Parker was just protecting herself as is her right. This is her livelihood and if she got hurt it could jeopardize her career. As far as Mahorn pushing Lisa, I don’t think he really wanted to push her down like that. I think he was just trying to stop the fight from getting any bigger. But I don’t think it was his business to keep Lisa out of the fight. He should have been focusing on his own players and keeping THEM out of the fight! He should have been worried about his own team. That’s his job, that’s what he gets paid for.

I’m from TN so I’m a CP3 fan to the fullest. Pierson should not have ran up on Candace like she did. Simple as that!! lol She hit that floor hard. But I hate that it it took a fight for the WNBA to finally get some attention. These girls play just as hard as the guys play if not harder! GO LA!!!!

black on black need to stop this madness

no rick should not be suspended simply cause he didn’t do anything to lisa.
i love lisa and i always have respected her game, but there is no way she can let rick take a blame for something that he did not do. anyway girls clean up your act and play ball there is no play for violence on the court. anybody that wants to fight should join bush’s military; you are guarnteed a war.

I think people are overreacting about the Lisa Leslie push. I think he was just trying to keep her back from the fight and he pushed back a little too hard. However I don’t blame Lisa Leslie from being upset at the time. I would have been too.

That Pierson is just mad that Parker won an ESPY award….that girl started it. Ugly people do things like that. I just started watching the women play…and that was crazy.

allyson said on July 25th, 2008

Rick was in the wrong the only thing lisa leslie was trying to do was help her teammate up. She was not going in to fight because the fight was really over. She doesn’t want to set that kind of example for her daughter or for the young girls that look up to her.

regga said on July 25th, 2008

To me it looks like Pierson and Parker were just tangled up and Pierson took it upon herself to make an issue out of it. Because if Parker really tried to push Pierson down she would not have fallen herself. And as for the coach he should have been trying to keep his own players in line. To be honest he should not have been in anyone’s face but Pierson’s, because she started the whole thing.

Tamilynn said on July 26th, 2008

Rick was in the wrong ——Simple. Piersson took this too far Parker simply made a little tangle you can clearly see so because she fell fisrt, then PIERSON WENT TOWARDS HER

SHE BETTA NOT TRY CANDANCE AGAIN CAUSE SHE ALREADY SAW WHAT SHE BOUT TO GET BEFORE EVERYONE ELSE JUMPED IN!

Jackie said on July 27th, 2008

I see why Parker acted that way, Pierson obviously wanted that due to the fact that she bumped Parker in a disrespectful way, which caused the fight. I have mad respect for Parker and I would of did the same thing. I wouldn’t let no female disrespect me on or off the court.

MacOne said on July 27th, 2008

I DIDN’T SEE WHAT OTHERS SAW, MAYBE BECAUSE THEY ARE FEMALES THEY GOT A LITTLE ATTENTION.

It is not clear what happen, but in the heat of everything, I think it was just a accident. Everyone pulling and pushing you just can’t say what happen. But no one should be be suspended indefinately. Sometime this happen in sport
