What’s Up With The U.S. Track Team?

Bernard Lagat

What’s up with the United States track and field team?

First, 100 meters favorite Tyson Gay failed to reach the finals.

Then on Saturday night, the Jamaican women took 1-2-3 in the 100 meters finals, with Muna Lee and Lauryn Williams finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.

To cap things off, Bernard Lagat, who ran and won silver in the 1,500 for Kenya in 2004, failed to qualify for the finals by .02 seconds.

Yikes.

At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if Allyson Felix didn’t medal in the 200 meters.

Do you think Michael Phelps can run track as well?

I don’t think you can compare the events that happened here. You also left out the fact that lopez lomong also failed to qualify for the 1500m final. As an american who believes that not only is Usain Bolt using performance enhancing drugs but, that Tyson Gay, Lauren Williams, Tori Edwards, Muna Lee and Damu Cherry are all using as well, I’m never suprised when they run poorly. In Damu Cherry’s case, why we allow athletes to return after previously being caught, and banned for 2 years, for using drugs, I’ll never understand. Anyway, Tyson Gay was injured at the US Olympic trials and despite his lies that he was 100%, there is no way he was able to train properly in between that and the olympics. I’m just happy he didn’t make the team for the 200m and didnt make it to the finals of the 100m. 2 years from now when they have figured out how to test for newer drugs and go back and test the blood from these olympics, it will be medals that we don’t have to give back. Unfortunately for Jamaica, they are going to be returning quite a few.

Lagat and Lomong were both cases of either bad running, bad coaching or a combo of the two. I am sadened that there is no better track and field commentator than someone like Ato Bolden, they really need someone who can run more than just 200m. There were two problems with both of their races. First of all, both athletes, like idiots, ran pretty much the entire race in the second lane and at times, even further out than that. Any runner with a brain knows you want to be against the rail, otherwise you are running a longer distance than the other athletes because of the turns. Both of these guys ran more than 1500m in their races because of this bad mistake. Both made the same mistake in the opening round of the 1500m and should have corrected it for the semis. Secondly, on top of the running outside, both either fell too far behind or got themselves boxed in between runners. The attitude that one can chill close to the back of the pack and out kick everyone the last 400 meters is crazy especially at this level of competition and on the olympic stage. Lagat should have taken the lead at the start of the race, though not the norm for him, and ran the entire race against the rail up front. Even if this meant pushing the pace to keep that position, anyone running outside of him would have run their legs out by the time of the last lap and then he could have kicked it in to not only qualify for the finals but also win the semi heat. Lopez Lomong should have done the same thing though in his case he is not as good of a 1500m runner. His tactic should have been to push the pace and spread the field of runners out, saving enough to kick it in on the last lap and hold on to a qualifying spot. Both runners allowed themselves to be pushed around. I have thrown many an elbow in track races and neither of them was aggressive at all. I found it particularly funny when Lagat claimed he knew he would make it to the finals with his time despite his poor running in that race. It’s fitting that he missed by .02 seconds. Both were a disgrace to this country and to the REAL American athletes they prevented from competing at the Olympics by taking up those 2 spots on the team. I’d rather us continue to do poorly in distance events at every Olympics than for us to basically recruit runners from other countries to compete for us. I found it equally ridiculous that Lomong carried the US flag at the opening ceremony, and I hope a Kenyan, who didnt jump ship, wins the 1500m final….coughs loudly sounding out the word Lagat in the cough.

I don’t expect Allyson Felix to win the 200m against the new generation of Jamaican, ‘if the americans are using drugs we can use them too’ runners. She will be in the finals though and should also medal. The 200m is less about bad starts than the 100m is. Also, lets not forget that the 100m should have been called back due to Tori Edwards false start. I am wondering what type of crappy equipment is being used at that particular event that the gun wasn’t fired a second time to call the race back. I’ve seen false starts that weren’t as obvious as that one, called back at lower profile meets. Who knows what would have happened when everyone was glued to the blocks for the second start of that race. If I was someone who placed outside of top 3 int hat race, I would have immediately protested the race and demanded a restart. I also believe any athlete to her left and right who may have noticed the twitch would be at a disadvantage as they would expect for the gun to go off again for the false start.
