Coming In From The Cold

January 21st, 2009

The deed is done. We made our way down to Washington DC to be a part of history – 1.8 million of us (not including the ones who slept in yesterday on account of celebrating a lil’ too “vigorously” the night before). The temperatures were low, but spirits were high as a nation descended on her capitol to usher in a new dawn. Read the rest of this entry »

What We Believe

January 19th, 2009

Shout outs from Inauguration City! It is HYPE in DC right about now! Would have given you guys a shout yesterday, but I was too busy roaming the city. One of the highlights of the adventure to-date was the wonderful concert on the Mall yesterday, which was absolutely mindblowing!

It wasn’t just the hundreds upon thousands of people in attendance, nor the array of luminaries that spoke – everyone from Denzel Washington, to Jamie Foxx, Rosario Dawson, Marisa Tomei and Tom Hanks. Nor just the amazing performances from the likes of Herbie Hancock, Bruce Springsteen, Usher, James Taylor, John Legend, Sheryl Crow, an awesome return to the stage by Garth Brooks and of course the inimitable Stevie Wonder singing Obama’s de facto theme-song “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.”

Great Expectations

Obama Savior

Hey hey & Happy Saturday! I was watching Administration-Elect Obama-Biden on their whistle-stop tour this morning and noticed that Malia, the elder of his two daughters is getting hella’ tall. It reminded me of this article I’d seen where she basically tells her daddy that his inauguration speech “better be good.”

Aside from reminding us of just how amazingly precocious these two beautiful kids are, Malia’s comment pretty much sums up the entire planet’s take on Obama’s presidency-to-be: “it better be good.” Read the rest of this entry »

A Fond Farewell

January 16th, 2009

What’s up y’all, welcome to the Yes We Will blog at BET.com, where a few of us will be serving up a regular slice of delicious blogitude for those of you with an appetite for affirmative analysis. Now I know it seems a bit counter-intuitive to welcome you with “A Fond Farewell,” but I think it is most appropriate given the historic nature of what is happening in our country.Yesterday I watched as our soon-to-be ex-President George W. Bush gave his Farewell Address to the nation. The most remarkable thing about this speech in my eyes, was it’s genuine lack of “remarkability.” After 8 years, 2 wars, 4,000 US soldiers dead, hundreds of thousands of civilians killed in Iraq & Afghanistan, 3,000 citizens of the globe lost on 9/11/2001 (including my Uncle Japhet, may he rest in peace), the gutting of American moral standing around the world, and a global economic crisis well under way…after all this the man at the heart of the greatest social, political and economic maelstrom in our lifetimes left by saying…nothing. A Q&A With Derrick Ashong

January 16th, 2009

ashong_hr_day21.jpgAlmost a year ago Derrick Ashong rose to internet fame by way of a YouTube video clip. You may remember him being hammered by a very skeptical reporter at an Obama rally concerning his support for then candidate Sen. Barrack Obama.

Through this video clip, the world fell in love with Ashong for 3 reasons. He gave us evidence that Obama was not an anomaly. He then commanded respect from intellect as opposed to anger. And finally, he made us proud in the way he represented black people. Read the rest of this entry »
