For you Comic Book Lovers!

Published by Keisha on Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at 9:48 pm.

Post by: Keisha Courtney for BET’S You(th) Vote!

Forget about Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, Captain America and the like because a new future of superheroes’ are emerging. These “characters” if you will, exhibit traits superheroes in the past have not. These two new editions to the comic book world have to deal with changing Americas’ economy, healthcare system and deciding what Americas next move overseas will be while still dealing with their own real life issues.

IDW Publishing plans on releasing two new comic books, one for Barack Obama and one for John McCain. These comic biographies are just what the comic world needs… just to keep them in touch with reality. Hey who knows maybe in the future these puppies could become collectors’ items.

So what do you think?

Was creating this comic a smart move by IDW or are comic book fans going to be disappointed about these new “superheroes?”

Are you interested to see what this comic book contains? Would you purchase it? You tell me.

Be the first to pre-order yours here!

Harriet Tubman and SlavesHarriet Tubman and Slaves

For some reason I find myself humming the chorus to the Timbaland feat. One Republic song, “It’s too late to apologize…” 144 years after slavery was officially abolished in the Thirteenth Amendment, the U.S.  House of Representatives is poised to pass a resolution apologizing to African Americans for both slavery and the Jim Crow era. Vanity Fair vs. The New Yorker

Published by Keisha on Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at 12:29 pm.

Posted by: Keisha Courtney for BET’s You(th) Vote!

So a couple of weeks ago everyone was ranting and raving about The New Yorker’s depiction of the Obama’s on their July, 21st 2008 cover. Well Vanity Fair, a magazine that is focused on fashion, culture and politics has released a cover of their own…but this time it deals with the McCain’s.

Yes, this cover is similar to the one of the Obama’s except there are a few differences.

  1. John McCain is holding a walker
  2. Cindy McCain is holding several pills in her hands
  3. The Constitution is burning in the fireplace of the Oval Office
  4. A painting of George W. Bush hangs on the wall.

Do you think Vanity Fair was creative enough with this cover?

Should McCain supporters be as upset with this cover as Obama supporters were when his hit the stands? Voice your opinion.

Following the lead of other artists like will.i.am and Nas, my boy Kanye West has recently been using his star power to bring light to social and political issues.  Just a week after word got out that he, will.i.am, and N.E.R.D. will be performing at the upcoming Democratic National Convention, Kanyeezy will appear in the MTV “Choose or Lose” documentary “Homecoming” tonight at 10 p.m. eastern time.

Oh God: Obama’s Prayer Stolen from the Wailing Wall!

Published by Angel on Monday, July 28, 2008 at 5:20 am.

Posted by Angel Elliott, BET News for YOU(th) Vote!

When you’re on the road to the White House, trying to become the President of the United States, you have to expect to some degree, that every aspect of your life will be scrutinized, criticized and analyzed; even that your character and morals be called to question. But you ALSO probably believe somewhere in the back of your mind that people will have some modicum of respect for the public service that you’re trying to afford the country, some morality that will make them stop and think before they go too far. Well I guess Senator Barack Obama can’t have that same reasonable expectation.

While the Illinois Senator toured the world, and made a stop in Jerusalem, he visited the Western Wall (also known as the Wailing Wall) and like many others wrote a note of prayer to God and slipped it in the cracks of the wall. Of course this isn’t the end of the story since this is Obama we’re talking about. Reportedly a Jewish Seminary student pilfered the note, and sold it to the Israeli daily newspaper, Maarvi who OF COURSE couldn’t resist publishing it, which they did, and of course brought in handwriting experts to analyze the note, and see if Obama really meant what he said to God.

The note included such scandalous and salacious text as this: “Lord- Protect my family and me.” and “Forgive my sins, and help me guard against pride and despair.” oh, and “Give me the wisdom to do what is right and just. Make me an instrument of your will.”

I guess the right wing press that probably paid that seminary student to dig up some dirt on Obama while over seas was sadly disappointed. Ha-ha, Obama is either smarter than people give him credit for, and knew even while writing the probably genuine prayer that someone might yank it out the wall, or truly might not have any National Enquirer worthy prayer to ask forgiveness for.

Wait, what is a seminary student doing stealing anyway?  Doesn’t this plainly go against the Ten Commandments? And isn’t the site of the Western Wall the holiest in Judaism? I guess people will truly do anything for a dollar, even go to hell.

What do you think, can someone running for public office, and in this case the highest in the land, expect any bit of privacy? Or is it par for the course? Let me know what you think!

-Angel

Nasty Nas Fights the Power!

Published by Angel on Thursday, July 24, 2008 at 7:16 pm.

Posted by Angel Elliott, BET News for YOU(th) Vote!

You gotta give this man his props. Not only does he rap on  albums about being politically conscious and fighting the not so unbiased corporate and right wing infiltrated FAUX NEWS, but he actually protest about it!

Nas partnered with members of ColorofChange.org & MoveOn.org  to insight and deliver a 620,000 + signed petition to end the bias, racist, bigoted, sexist propaganda (not that I have an opinion on the matter, journalistic-ally speaking *wink) that Fox loves to push as real news! Nas had a main concern however, that Fox News portrays Michelle and Barack Obama in racist manor. This is how I love to see Black Men! Passionate and empowered to change circumstances that they don’t like and will NOT put up with! He delivered a politically artistic speech to the press and a crowd of peaceful protesters in front of the Fox News Corporation yesterday evening.

Bill O’Reilly responded to the protesters and Nas on “The O’Reilly Factor” Wednesday by calling them ‘new klan’ and:

“The Move On organization espouses a radical left agenda and attacks those who oppose that nonsense… The latest smear from Move On is telling their Kool-Aid-drinking zombie followers that Fox News is smearing Barack Obama and is a racist concern. Of course, that’s a lie. This broadcast and FNC in general have been exceedingly fair to Senator Obama. … But in order to intimidate anyone from criticizing Obama in any way, Move On is playing the race card.”

Wait hold the phone…Kool -Aid-drinking?! Like we all don’t know who that refers to! You definitely just helped me to personally believe that you espouse the very thing you’re trying to say that you and you’re network doesn’t promote-prejudice, racism, ignorance. Nas responded by saying:

“Things he’s saying are worse than the worst rap lyrics I’ve ever heard…They don’t want to deal with it. They want to try to act like they want to get away from it. “

What do you think about this rapper taking a real active role in changes the politics of Fox? Should he care? Do you care? Hit me up and let know!

-Angel

Something tells me this isn’t over….good! Watch Nas perform his single “Sly Fox” on The Colbert Report (a show constantly parodying The O’Reilly Factor)!

Gas Prices are down! Should we thank President Bush for the break?

Published by Keisha on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 4:13 pm.

Post by: Keisha Courtney for BET’s You(th) Vote!

His buddy John McCain says yes!

While criticizing Barack Obama for opposing off shore drilling the Republican candidate praised President Bush for lifting the executive order that banned the process. The law was originally put in place by his father in 1990. McCain says that the president’s recent actions have caused oil to drop $10 a barrel, giving us the lower prices that we are currently enjoying.

Ummm…I don’t think that Bush will be receiving the praise that he is wishing for. Gas prices COULD have dropped due in part to a lower demand; people ARE taking public transportation more… but maybe I am just thinking way outside of the box!

What do you think? Are you going to thank President Bush for the break in gas prices or are you just going to hope that they continue to fall? You tell me.
