So I’m here in St. Paul, MN preparing to cover the Republican National Convention when breaking news happened-Hurricane Gustav is about to hit land, making a mandatory evacuation necessary for New Orleans, lower parts of Louisiana and Mississippi. So now- we’re all disbursing, some heading to Houston, TX-others to Baton Rouge, LA, others right into the eye of the storm in New Orleans. More than 200,000 people have already evacuated to Texas.

How can you describe being in a moment that will never happen again? How can you explain pure electric energy produced by the hopes and expectations of the people around you? How do you move through a moment in history?
Keeping my journalistic responsibility of non partisan reporting is hard to do when you witness a man make history. YOU(th) Vote was there in Denver, CO at Mile High Stadium when Senator Barack Obama officially made his Democratic nominee acceptance speech. Despite the medias effort to focus on Obama’s race, there was nothing but pure multi culturalism in that stadium. People from all walks of life, young, old, black, white, Asian, Indian, gay, straight, disabled not only gathered to watch Obama make history-but to be apart of it.
I personally couldn’t help but to be a emotional at the sight of this man-the physical embodiment and manifestation of all my hopes, dreams and aspirations not only as a Black Woman, but as an American.
Michelle of course looked gorgeous. Dawning a hot pink and black dress, purposefully matching the hue of her daughters outfits.
Never in my lifetime (and I still have a ways to go) did I think I would see white, conservative, white or blue collar men or women walking around with the face of a black man plastered across their chest, his name written on their cheeks, or a pin baring his resemblance on their chest. But then I realize that he’s more than that- he truly transcends societal labels to unite his supports and America in a chorus of voices chanting “Yes We Can.”

I WAS THERE on the anniversary of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream”speech, when Obama accepted the democratic nomination in Denver, in front of a crowd of thousands. Between the flash bulbs, the list of celebs performing, and the roar of the crowd, it was difficult not to get caught up in the spectacle. Looking around at all the glossy eyed supporters of Obama, it was clear they had been waiting on this night all week and perhaps even longer. There were fire works, music, confetti, and lights darted all around, adding to fire ofthe frenzied crowd. During a video package of Obama’s journey from a young man to the democratic nominee the place was so captivated you could hear the people responsible for McCain’s nomination speech take a big nerves gulp knowing they have a lot to try and out do. When Obama finally hit the stage around eight o’clock I could have sworn my ear drums were gonna explode and bleed down the sides of my neck. Cameras flashing, people clapping, people crying- it was like a Michael Jackson performance in Russia in the 80’s. The night was over the top, but can it be out done? Can the republicans rally together a convention that will make the events in Denver look like a local pie eating contest? Will they even try? I know one thing for sure; history will remember that night and I can forever say ‘I WAS THERE!’

This is one of those times that I wish I’d made this up. Not because I don’t support women in high status positions but because Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin doesn’t seem like the best possible choice of a running mate for Sen. John McCain. His selection shocked republicans across the country. After all, the list of possible running mates was lengthy and chock full of more experienced candidates. Read the rest of this entry »

While several students are heading back to school for their fall semesters, a group of students taking a political science class in Iowa are attending the DNC…well at least via webcam. CLICK HERE for the entire story.

Watch the video above for my thoughts on Hillary Clinton’s speech at the DNC. If you’ve read my posts before, you know that I’ve been skeptical about whether or not Hillary was really for party unity, but after watching her speech Tuesday night, I am convinced that she is.
But two questions remain: Do you think she was sincere, or was she just putting on a good show? Also, will her speech help in healing the Democratic Party, or will there still be division?
Hit me up to break it down and click “Read More” to read one of my favorite parts of her speech.
“No way. Now how. No McCain!”–Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton

As you all know the Democratic National Convention kicked off last night. Michelle Obama delivered her long anticipated, heavily emphasized speech which turned out to be inspiring and hopeful to everyone living in America.
A few months ago Michelle Obama was criticized for saying that for the first time she was proud of her country. Well I think that the scrutiny behind all of that can be put to rest following her speech yesterday, but others think differently.

YOU(th) Vote! head man in charge Sian Pierre and I came all the way out to Denver, CO to of course be your eyes and ears at this historic Democratic National Convention. But as I looked around these past couple days I wonder if the message of this convention could be lost in the stars… Read the rest of this entry »

If you thought speeches would start the Deomcratic National Convention, you were wrong. The bomb squad has already detonated a suspicious looking package, and over 1,500 anti-war protesters have marched to the Pepsi Center. (They’ve also been successfully shooed away.) And the week is far from over. Read the rest of this entry »
