Dear Babies,

I don’t know your names, and we are yet to meet, but I just want you to know this one thing—your daddy was there. I was there at the exact moment that the world changed forever.

By the time you read this, it may be hard for you to imagine me as anything but your “old man,” but as I write to you I am a 22-year-old recent college graduate who lives in New York City, and is currently in Washington , D.C.  I may be young right now, but I’ve already seen a lot in my lifetime.  I have witnessed the horror of the World Trade Center attacks, the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, and the dawn of a new millennium.  I remember the beginning of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the funeral of Pope John Paul II, and what the internet was like before YouTube and Facebook .  In my personal life I’ve experienced many triumphs and joys, and have also had my share of failures and sadness.  But I never expected to see what I saw on Tuesday, January 20, 2009—the day that the world changed forever.

You see, that was the day that President-elect Barack Obama became President Barack Obama.  That was the day that he and his beautiful wife Michelle and their lovely daughters Sasha and Malia walked onto that platform on the United States Capitol to accept their victory, the world’s victory.  On this day at 12 noon, the world stood still in amazement, and then erupted in cheers of hope and elation.

Growing up in my small hometown of Quitman, Texas, people would always say, “Travers, you’re going to be President one day.”  Now, don’t get your hopes up, because I have no desire to hold that position. But it wasn’t until today, the day that the world changed forever, that I truly believed—without any doubts, without any reservations—that I could.

So as I reflect on this exciting day, the image that is the most vivid to me is not that of President Obama with his hand on the Bible, or even the new First Lady standing by his side.   I am thinking of those two beautiful little black girls proudly looking at their father.

And I am visualizing that one day that could be you.

With love, your daddy,

Travers

Hey, Ebony! I feel you with being able to actually MEAN IT, when telling kids they can be anything. LOL at you saying the oath with him! That’s hilarious! But I’m with you, I cried like a little baby yesterday. I mean ugly crying—snot dripping, face torn up and everything. LOL. I’m not ashamed at all though, because everyone around me was the exact same way. We were there, Ebony. We were there!

Thanks for hitting me up and take care. Hope to hear from you again soon.

I must say . This letter was big. Its is true, we can tell our children and grandchildren that they can be what they want to be in life. We have broken down the walls and there will be more future for us. I watch it on TV with my co-workers back in Toronto.. I really wished I was there. But the great moment for me was when my 5 year came home saying there is a black president in the white house. and she wants to be just like him one day.. Thats when u knw the change that was foreseen by Martin Luther King Jr has come to pass.

I pray we all learn to hold our heads high no matter whats goin on in our lifes ; and believe that we as one can do it togther then apart .. YES WE CAN AND YES WE DID.

Cass—That’s very moving about your 5-year-old. And you’re right—that’s how we know that change has come to pass. When you can change the mindsets of children, you change the world. Your words are very powerful. Thanks for commenting!

Do you realize that Obama supports the abortion of unborn babies? You are writing a letter to your “unborn babies “talking about how happy you are that we have leader who supports killing “unborn babies.”

Zenobia Said on

Obama has said that he doesn’t like abortion but he has no right to stop people from doing anything with their bodies that they don’t want to
.He respects the choice of individuals.

Ebony Said on

Javen— you must also look at the faces of his own SMALL children..who he did not abort. How can he be for abortion and have small children of his own? He is not FOR abortion, he is for giving the woman the right to choose. In one of the debates, he said he is more for programs that will prevent women from even being in this predicament, in the first place (in which in many cases, she CHOSE (except in %?@~ cases) to have sex). But he is not For abortion. Honestly, I don’t know anyone who really is FOR ABORTION. And for the record, the decision legalizing abortion (Roe v. Wade) was decided in 1973, when Nixon (R) was president (and Pres. Obama was all of 11 years old)…so that is hardly his fault. He is just for the right to choose. And to go even further, God, himself gives us the right to choose our own path. He does not force salvation on us…we make the decision as to how we live our lives. So there is nothing wrong with Travers writing a letter to his unborn children about the inauguration of our President. One day I hope to tell my own (future) kids about this time in our lives….
