YOU(th) VOTE! 411

It’s time for a take over! The atmosphere in America is ripe for a revolution, and we’re at the helm! Politics and hip hop have finally merged to create a new voice, and a new generation of you(th) voters that can actually change the course of this country’s history! But before I get all Al Sharp on you, allow me to introduce myself. I’m a compulsively ambitious, politically savvy, irreverently fashionable, hip hop fanatic.
My name is Angel Elliott, and I was born and raised in Baltimore, MD. I’m a journalist for BET News in Washington DC.
Why politics interests me? Because I’m intensely interested in the advancement of my people! We can really influence the laws that affect us, if we educate ourselves on the issues! Even more important for Black folks to do so because, well, we all we got!
This upcoming election is so important. After 8 years of Bush’s Bull, we’ve got to choose the right man, or woman for the job. Everyone’s had enough of being broke, struggling with student loans and having a hard time finding a J-O-B! We have the opportunity to elect someone who’ll change not only the U.S, but the world— Yes we can! (ha!) Besides, who says politics can’t be glamorous and hip? There’s more to Capitol Hill than grey suites, pinstripes and policies; I’m here to break it down! Let’s take a ride, from the streets of B-More, to the steps of the White House… and we’re knocking!
-Angel
What’s up! The two most important things to know about me, TRAVERS JOHNSON, are: 1.) my little brother is, hands down, my FAVORITE person on Earth; and 2.)my parents are the only superheroes I ever pretended to be when I was a child. Other than that, I am:
-A 21-year-old small town guy from Quitman, TX.
-“Trav” to a few, “Big T” to people I grew up with, “Teej” to a couple, and “Travy J.” to my mom.
-Passionate about most things related to mass media, politics, and publishing.
-A believer that music is infinitely powerful, and that there are few things more unifying than the electric slide.
-A recent GRADUATE of Morehouse College! (Hallelujah! lol!)
-Moving to New York City after graduation to work in book publishing.
-Blessed beyond measure, and thankful for both the smooth roads and the rocky paths.
-Excited about the monumental possibilities of the 2008 presidential election.
-Convinced that now is a beautiful time to be young and black in America.
Hey all! My name is Keisha Courtney and I am 23 years old. I was born and raised in Utah. YES there are blacks there and NO I am not part of that “particular” group of people, for those of you who are sure to ask
I am an outgoing individual who loves to have fun!
Family is number one to me and without them I would not be who I am today. I moved to California when I was 19 to go to school, and for a change of pace. I will be graduating from California State University – Northridge with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and a minor in Gender and Women Studies in May.
This upcoming election is history in the making, and I am excited to see who our new leader will be.
Our country is in a crisis and the next president has a lot of things to do in order to turn our country around.
What’s up ya’ll?! I’m Ashley Slayton, a 22-year-old journalist from Longview, Texas…and I’m a packrat.
I’m absolutely obsessed with creating mementos, which is why I’m so excited about chronicling these elections. We’re experiencing history in the making!
I’m in love with the involvement of our black youth in this process. Actress Keri Washington said “People seem to be realizing their power,” and that realization is nowhere more evident than in our own front yard. As a soon to be alumna at
It’s our time to realize our power and own it!

Our country needs to worry more about our struggles rather than other’s struggles our ghettos are getting just as bad as in other country. It seems if you come up without money that you will nevr see money. I live in Minneapolis Minnesota. I am 17 with a one year old daughter and it has been a struggle for my little family. There is no housing help for us because I am not 18 but if I was living with my mom and I did not have my daughter’s father involved I would be recieving cash and food and medical assistance. Instaed my daughter, fiance and I are all without health insurance or our own place. Everday is a struggle. Everyday I witness government money being abused by the older generations who never tried to do anything with their lives yet I am a young determined responisble parent but i am not good enough for help. I would love to graduate highschool but during my pregnancy I was expelled from public schools in my district, I am trying to graduate using an online school but when youhave to worry about eating that day and trying to get the money to move out onto our own again there’s not much time for school. I would love to see government money put into the right hands help teen FAMILIES to survive and not have to live day by day. OUr government sets us up to fail they want to see us drop out selling drugs in the streets and in jail. Nobody wants to see that girl who got pregnant at 15 to still be with her daughter’s father going to school on tracc making a name for herself. Nobody wants to see a teen father supporting and loving his family boy boy will I tell you there were people working in the court house when I was pregnant telling my bay’s father that it wasn’t too late he still had time to leave. It makes me so proud to say that through thick and thin my family (ME MY DAUGHTER AND HER FATHER) are going strong and praying that one day our voice will count.
i think the neuisance necklace is somewhat racist, but it other ways its not b/c it just a way of making more money off of a film.. And it will attrack more of a white audience, that will find things like that necklace fascinating. but,if you think about it hasn’t walt disney world being downpoured as being racist in the past..
i mohammed awal i love every think about your life
We all need to really stand up and make a change because the rate that we are traveling may not be the best. We really do need a leader that will make the necessary changes in our country. I love to see or hear about (African-americans) getting together to make a postive change. If only we all were on the same page. I want to do all that I am capable of to make the right changes in this world-and I wish we all had similar mentalities. Well I geuss that’s enough for now…..oh and my name is Timoshanae and I am 13 years old.
Americans in our society needs to be focused more on problems that can be solved. I personally think racism will never go away. What about blood diamonds. I never here about that when children are dieing from what we buy. Nothing can be changed untill we make a change ourselves
hi i am a 19 year old male who feels that it is very important for the youth to stand up and vote because we need to make a change for our generation and the next.my words can’t even describe whats going on in society right now because it’s a downcry right now through crazy gas prices, the election that’s coming up, and all the violence that’s surrounding our community. so i’m takin time out to let myv voice to be heard so we can be represented the way we should be. peace and love
