YOU(th) VOTE! 411

It’s time for a take over! The atmosphere in America is ripe for a revolution, and we’re at the helm! Politics and hip hop have finally merged to create a new voice, and a new generation of you(th) voters that can actually change the course of this country’s history! But before I get all Al Sharp on you, allow me to introduce myself. I’m a compulsively ambitious, politically savvy, irreverently fashionable, hip hop fanatic.
My name is Angel Elliott, and I was born and raised in Baltimore, MD. I’m a journalist for BET News in Washington DC.
Why politics interests me? Because I’m intensely interested in the advancement of my people! We can really influence the laws that affect us, if we educate ourselves on the issues! Even more important for Black folks to do so because, well, we all we got!
This upcoming election is so important. After 8 years of Bush’s Bull, we’ve got to choose the right man, or woman for the job. Everyone’s had enough of being broke, struggling with student loans and having a hard time finding a J-O-B! We have the opportunity to elect someone who’ll change not only the U.S, but the world— Yes we can! (ha!) Besides, who says politics can’t be glamorous and hip? There’s more to Capitol Hill than grey suites, pinstripes and policies; I’m here to break it down! Let’s take a ride, from the streets of B-More, to the steps of the White House… and we’re knocking!
-Angel
What’s up! The two most important things to know about me, TRAVERS JOHNSON, are: 1.) my little brother is, hands down, my FAVORITE person on Earth; and 2.)my parents are the only superheroes I ever pretended to be when I was a child. Other than that, I am:
-A 21-year-old small town guy from Quitman, TX.
-“Trav” to a few, “Big T” to people I grew up with, “Teej” to a couple, and “Travy J.” to my mom.
-Passionate about most things related to mass media, politics, and publishing.
-A believer that music is infinitely powerful, and that there are few things more unifying than the electric slide.
-A recent GRADUATE of Morehouse College! (Hallelujah! lol!)
-Moving to New York City after graduation to work in book publishing.
-Blessed beyond measure, and thankful for both the smooth roads and the rocky paths.
-Excited about the monumental possibilities of the 2008 presidential election.
-Convinced that now is a beautiful time to be young and black in America.
Hey all! My name is Keisha Courtney and I am 23 years old. I was born and raised in Utah. YES there are blacks there and NO I am not part of that “particular” group of people, for those of you who are sure to ask
I am an outgoing individual who loves to have fun!
Family is number one to me and without them I would not be who I am today. I moved to California when I was 19 to go to school, and for a change of pace. I will be graduating from California State University – Northridge with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and a minor in Gender and Women Studies in May.
This upcoming election is history in the making, and I am excited to see who our new leader will be.
Our country is in a crisis and the next president has a lot of things to do in order to turn our country around.
What’s up ya’ll?! I’m Ashley Slayton, a 22-year-old journalist from Longview, Texas…and I’m a packrat.
I’m absolutely obsessed with creating mementos, which is why I’m so excited about chronicling these elections. We’re experiencing history in the making!
I’m in love with the involvement of our black youth in this process. Actress Keri Washington said “People seem to be realizing their power,” and that realization is nowhere more evident than in our own front yard. As a soon to be alumna at
It’s our time to realize our power and own it!

Hi, I am 16 years old.I am an up in coming activist. Not many people no about the genocide taking place in Darfur,Sudan,Located in Africa. About 500,000 people have died during this 6 war (This is not and accurate count due to the changing of deaths recorded), Children, Women, and Men.I am bringing this to your attention because something can be done, I know it may seem like a plethoa of tasks but every donation, every letter, every voice counts and matters. For more information please Vist SaveDarfur.org. We are the future and the time for change is now.Thank you.
hey bet and everybody i’m 15 and i live in jacksonville, florida and i go to andrew jackson high school where violence inolving guns and other weapons are a huge deal. one day we had a driveby, and people from the outside often sneak into the school and harass students. one wednesday we had 10fights and the following thursday we had 7 fights. it’s getting terrible in jacksonville, you literally can’t even walk to a park and be aleast little safe. a 15yr old boy named dejuan graham was returning to jackson, to go on with his life in a positive way, from being in a reform school. but unfortunately he died on the saturday before he was suppose to come jackson. dejuan was shick in a park wih his friends because someone mistaked him for someone else, and shock him in the back of the head. i love the fact that barack obama is running for president and i support him but i must say whenever or whoever gets in office i PRAY they understand the severity of violence and understand this isn’t a 3 minute video of somebody living in a violent area and at the end a rapper is famous and making millions…NO. this s REALTIY!!!!! our black areas are losing our people to violence and it’s very unnecessary. i say we make the change to ENFORCE violence prevention and not make violence caasual issue that black people are suppose to be apart of. i’m also involving the police officers in this growing dilema because they are killing people just to kill them. they should be required to learn karate or have something as a back up and not just shoot people because they feel that’s the only option, because it’s NOT.tey always say they shoot for self defense, and somtimes they do use it as defense mechanism, but i feel as though most of the time they just to lazy and out of shape to do the right thing and they shoot a suspect, because their to TIRED. things NEED to change or else our black population will be literally DOOMED. thanx for this oppurtunity to express the way i feel. hopefully the next president (barack obama) will change the negative things going on(or at least some of them)in our blck communities
BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL, LOVE, ANGELIC, COURAGEOUS and KIND…… black is the best thing EVER
i think that our bigges problem that we as anericans should is our senior ciitzens getting better health care and the price of gas and we need to end the war. families are losing loved ones everyday and some have not heard from them and are worried. the price of gas is dramatically depressing. its hard as an adult and as a teenager to get from place to place because gas is to high. its time to make a change in this world and i feel that is must start wit having a black president. there are so many changes that need to be fixed and here’s a chance. i am from houston, mississippi and there are so many things in jus my home town that need a change. these days and time its hard to save a lil money cause bush is taking it all. jobs are going to go down and jobs are goin to back to china, and its getting hard to live.if we as americans can get the word out so that ppl can understand us we can change this world. please hear us and lets work together to make a difference. thank you all

OUR country is in the middle of so many economical problems right now and we are in DIRE need of a CHANGE. I believe that in January 2009 that CHANGE will come. From the rising gas prices, college tuition going up, and the war in Iraq it is all going to CHANGE. It’s not going to be an overnight job but “IT WILL GET DEALT WITH.”
the dam well faer is ~?@#@@%$ just get a job and hold it dont do your crack and pot ect it would be as bad but stop puting your hand out that is what bums do look at them they get no where in life if you do the same your going no where now next topic the war i think we should give them son of bitchs hell what they did to the towers and those towers was money trade they had this whole thing pland out for years on end the frist iraq war was the benging of this sgit and they know the only whay they going to hurt us is gas my gest is by next year 4.00-5.00 per gelon if we get a d party in there we are @?$$ and the war well be here in the usa that is way we need a r party in the house to kick there ass back to the stone age
Keep up the good work on here, seeing intelligent black conversation is inspiring!
I seriously think Obama should consider making Lil Wayne his Vice-President.I say this because Lil Wayne knows the business of running something, as you already know hes the President and CEO of Cash Money Records. Also the extra 150 million votes cant hurt! And one more thing if they promised an administration that would decriminalize marijuana, come January 2009, it would be the new “Black” house.PAINT IT.
I think Sen.Obama is the prefect person too run American .I think he will make gas lower end the war and make American the right county it should be. I also think he should make Hillary his vice- President. I think Sen. Obama should make President Bush See what he should of done in office for the late 8 years !
African American people have many problems. We as a people have no identity. Our African brothers and sisters disown us as if our ancestors volunteered to come to America and be slaves, then there’s the whites, jews, hispanics, and asians who all look down on us as a race of people. Many say we should blame ourselves, but no, I blame America. America has tried to isolate us as they’ve done for hundreds of years since slavery. When whites were putting down a foundation on this land, after stealing it from the Indians, we were building it from them. Over many years, whites invested in land, businesses, and accumulated finances that would be handed down to each generation while blacks continued to be slaves, fight for freedom, fight for education, fight for jobs, etc. Blacks are only now being able to find some success in America. We still have a long way to go and there are still many who try to keep us down. We must realize that we’ll never get our 40 acres and a mule, but we can slowly build for our generations to come. It will be harder because there will not be great great great grandpas money or business to get us started or pick us up when we fall. We as African American people have to find a way to do it on our own. Start with education our children and ourselves and becoming role models that our children and other children can be proud of and look up to. We need to stop glamourizing gold chains, rims, and the the latest tennis shoes and start teaching our children to value their education, communities, and one another. If we don’t fight to keep the crime out of our community, then we’ll lose our children and the community for good. We need to educate our children about sex and violence and the reasons why they should stay away from both. We need to show our children alternative ways of living so that they know there’s something beyond living in the hood forever. When i go into a jewish community, china town, or prodominatly white areas, I see races working together and doing business together. We are too caught up in being afraid someone is going to be more successful than us, that we miss our own blessings. We need to build daycares, stores, salons, have tutors, realtors, tax preparers, insurance companies, etc that are black owned and who we do business with. The asians, jewish, whites, and hispanics live like this every day. How else do they come to a country with absolutely nothing and prosper almost over night. They keep it in the family and their tight niche community. Hispanics for example, came over and saw opportunity. They took on cheap labor, learned the trades and then went into business on their own. They had a master plan in place and the ability to execute it . They called companies and would speak great english and yet would ask for an interpreter. They did this to create a demand for spanish /english speaking jobs as well as jobs for interpreters. This went on for years and now they are taking over jobs, They found opportunity and they stuck with it. The Chinese found something that was in demand (fried rice and hair products)which are both only in black neighborhoods. We will spend our last dime on either and they know this. They watch us like we are all criminals and yet they do business in our communities because we shop there. When will we stand for something? Stand together? Fight together instead of apart?
I think What She said Should Happy in to Bush we are in a war for no reason !

i think that obama should win because it would be the first of the U.S. to not just elect a black president but to elect someone who cares about our black community and kids.
I can truely appreciate the fact now more than ever that us as black people are speaking out for what is right and that is Obama who for the people. I have always been told as a young man a closed mouth don’t get fed, so it is time for us to eat.
Hi my name is John and I’m a 26 year old Blood Type AB-American and I really want Barack Obama to win the election and make history as being the first Blood Type AB-American President. I have no idea what his qualifications are, or where he stands on any issue, but he is Blood Type AB which means he will watch out for us universal recipients and our communities, and no one else. All our problems will be solved. BET, CNN, MSNBC, NY TIMES, MTV & San Francisco must also be Blood Type AB-Americans as well because they sure as hell want him to win bad! More than I do! :p
