YOU(th) VOTE! 411

It’s time for a take over! The atmosphere in America is ripe for a revolution, and we’re at the helm! Politics and hip hop have finally merged to create a new voice, and a new generation of you(th) voters that can actually change the course of this country’s history! But before I get all Al Sharp on you, allow me to introduce myself. I’m a compulsively ambitious, politically savvy, irreverently fashionable, hip hop fanatic.
My name is Angel Elliott, and I was born and raised in Baltimore, MD. I’m a journalist for BET News in Washington DC.
Why politics interests me? Because I’m intensely interested in the advancement of my people! We can really influence the laws that affect us, if we educate ourselves on the issues! Even more important for Black folks to do so because, well, we all we got!
This upcoming election is so important. After 8 years of Bush’s Bull, we’ve got to choose the right man, or woman for the job. Everyone’s had enough of being broke, struggling with student loans and having a hard time finding a J-O-B! We have the opportunity to elect someone who’ll change not only the U.S, but the world— Yes we can! (ha!) Besides, who says politics can’t be glamorous and hip? There’s more to Capitol Hill than grey suites, pinstripes and policies; I’m here to break it down! Let’s take a ride, from the streets of B-More, to the steps of the White House… and we’re knocking!
-Angel
What’s up! The two most important things to know about me, TRAVERS JOHNSON, are: 1.) my little brother is, hands down, my FAVORITE person on Earth; and 2.)my parents are the only superheroes I ever pretended to be when I was a child. Other than that, I am:
-A 21-year-old small town guy from Quitman, TX.
-“Trav” to a few, “Big T” to people I grew up with, “Teej” to a couple, and “Travy J.” to my mom.
-Passionate about most things related to mass media, politics, and publishing.
-A believer that music is infinitely powerful, and that there are few things more unifying than the electric slide.
-A recent GRADUATE of Morehouse College! (Hallelujah! lol!)
-Moving to New York City after graduation to work in book publishing.
-Blessed beyond measure, and thankful for both the smooth roads and the rocky paths.
-Excited about the monumental possibilities of the 2008 presidential election.
-Convinced that now is a beautiful time to be young and black in America.
Hey all! My name is Keisha Courtney and I am 23 years old. I was born and raised in Utah. YES there are blacks there and NO I am not part of that “particular” group of people, for those of you who are sure to ask
I am an outgoing individual who loves to have fun!
Family is number one to me and without them I would not be who I am today. I moved to California when I was 19 to go to school, and for a change of pace. I will be graduating from California State University – Northridge with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and a minor in Gender and Women Studies in May.
This upcoming election is history in the making, and I am excited to see who our new leader will be.
Our country is in a crisis and the next president has a lot of things to do in order to turn our country around.
What’s up ya’ll?! I’m Ashley Slayton, a 22-year-old journalist from Longview, Texas…and I’m a packrat.
I’m absolutely obsessed with creating mementos, which is why I’m so excited about chronicling these elections. We’re experiencing history in the making!
I’m in love with the involvement of our black youth in this process. Actress Keri Washington said “People seem to be realizing their power,” and that realization is nowhere more evident than in our own front yard. As a soon to be alumna at
It’s our time to realize our power and own it!

I feel that the next president should be more concerned about health care. A lot of people in America can not afford health care, because it’s so expensive. If there was a way for the president to lower the cost of it, I would support that president 100%.
Nice site.

Hello all, my name is Endie and I’m originally from NJ, but I currently live in VA. I’ve never ever made a blog or ever discussed anything on a blog before, but today I was watching 106th and park and they’d just finished playing the new Ice Cube and Music Soul Childs new video, after the video went off the host then went into a mini rampage about how it is so important to vote this year (speaking of how important it is to vote for Obama) because the government is the reason for all of the unfortunate events that take place in the ghettos and hoods. Now, I’m a young black female (22) and I have to say that I seriously disagree with everything that he said. Don’t get me wrong, I think its awesome that FINALLY we have a black candidate, but does that mean that I vote for him just because he’s black? Allot of black people seem to think that if Obama is to be elected president then that is some how going to change the lives of people that are living in the ghetto and hoods. I don’t see how that is going to happen…Although Obama is black, that doesn’t mean that all black people will become successful if he is elected president. The color of someone’s skin doesn’t determine if they will make a great president or not, personally I don’t agree with his politics. Like most democrats he’s all for “united health care” and such which is fine, and there could be a way for everyone to have heath care with out having to tax middle class workers to pay for it. I work in the medical field, and we see lots of patients that have Medicare, sadly most of these patients are black. But it pisses me off when I see that there is nothing wrong with most of them, nothing that would warrant them from working. So since they are on Medicare they pretty much get free work, but tax payers are the ones that are paying for it. I don’t agree with that, because I work hard for my money, and I’m a young black female who didn’t graduated high school, who did live in the ghetto, but I did not blame the government or whoever else we like to point the finger too for my own mistakes. I got up off my ass, went back to school moved out of the ghetto when I was 18 (on my own) and yes, moving out of the ghetto is possible…I came to VA I got a good job so there for there are no excuses and as long as we keep looking for excuses we will never come up out of the slums of the ghetto. And not even Obama can change that. Im proud to be black, and im proud that i can be honest with myself and say that Obama is not going to change anything that happens in the hoods, and its not because he’s not going to want to its just not being realistic.
while we are doing the register to vote drive… please Advise our voters
Please, please, please advise everyone you know that they absolutely can NOT go to the polls wearing any Obama (or whoever you are voting for) shirts, pins, hats, etc. It is AGAINST THE LAW and will be grounds to have the polling officials to turn you away. They are banking that if you are turned away, you will not go home and change your clothes and return to the polls to vote.
My name is Stephanie Johnson. I’m 26 years old and for the first time have found a wholehearted interest in politics. For what it’s worth I am white, I announce this because, I believe in being united. I can never and will never claim to understand the hardships and turmoils the African Amerian Culture has endured, but I do my history. unlike too many white folks, I do care, I care enough to acknowledge and research of African American heritage. Also pay mind to the challenges and discrimination I see today. I have a strong interest in other cultures especially the African American culture. My family doesn’t unstand my interest, or my music preference so on and so forth. I don’t expect them to. For what’s its worth there are white people who want well for the African American community. Shoot I want well for myself, and where this world is at I am terrified that if Barak Obama doesn’t become President America will be bitting off more than they can chew, not only for myself but my child. I wanted to introduce myself and make it a point to say that, I couldn’t be more privelidged to live in the era I do. I am honored to be born into the this generation. See I know that the struggles African Americans face are much larger then most care to know. Dating back to Slavery (AMERICA WAS BUILT ON), Ku Klux Klan(COMMITED UNGOLDY CRIMES/PINNED ON THE “BLACK MAN,” MOTIVE FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS NOT TO HAVE ANY AUTHORITY, AND THIS IMPARTICULAR STILL EFFECTS AFRICAN AMERICAN TODAY, KKK STILL IN WHITE HOUSE.), Civial Rights Movement (WAS A DEADLY FOUGHT BATTLE FOR WHAT IS GOD GIVEN, WELL WORTH IT!), Voters Rights(AMEN…THIS TOOK COURAGE, WHITE MAN DIDN’T WANT THIS! WHITE MAN WAS SCARED TO ALLOW THIS!), Segregation (MAKES ME SICK, THIS EVEN EXISTED, VERY HARD TO CHANGE) ect. The one thing I know all these circumstances has in common is that countless African Americans lives were lost, fighting for what is GOD GIVEN! The details that go hand and hand with all these cicumstances in time, I chose to teach myself. Again, I can never understand, but I can surely respect. Good things will come to the African American Culture. I admire the stregnth of African Americans. Anyhow within my family i’m what they would call “the other white meat.” And I pride myself on that. For everything I am not, what I am is blessed, to not be so closed minded as to dismiss a whole culture based on the pigment of their skin. I’d be missing out on some amazing people if I had.
I’m not trying to be black, I tend to like myself the way God made me, but I’m trying to let a culture know and can only speak for myself in saying that “I am one white person that doesn’t think I’m better then you, don’t think I’m entiteld to anything because i’m white and beleive in REAL FREEDOM. I care about the qaulity of human life. I think what some white folks don’t understand is that there is so much more to African Americans struggles than slavery. You cannot undue so much pain in only, I think 46 years or close to. It sounds like a lot of decades, but it’s nothing compared to the sacrifices made. When america has a black president, this will be the day I believe my daughters future is going to be something beautiful! Do onto others, as you want others to do onto you. I let some folks know out east not to wear any Obama gear to polls, good thing I had some people still don’t know it and every vote counts. As it was said, i’m sure too many people will be counting on this to lesson the votes for Obama. I’m also honored to say that my grandparents are voting for Obama and I told them when they do so, DO IT WITH PRIDE! My father on the other hand isn’t. But tha’t s a whole other issue. Take Care All!
i know u all getting hyped up because he’s african american, but really find out what he’s really about,,put the ipod down, turn the music down, pull your pants up, turn your hat around the right way, do some research and find out what’s being said…McCain is the only way to go…plus Bidden got srved tonight.yes i am an iraq veteran,,i been there twice and lost real soldiers,,know what your really voting for,,not just for the color of someones skin
what john says is true. just because Obama is black doesnt mean we have to vote for him. But because he promotes changing the ways America has gone wrong under the lead of our current president i will vote for him. I am a young woman of 19 and equal wage for both male and females is something i pay close attention to, as i aspire to be a lawyer in the near future. here’s something i prepared. I’m registered to vote,
I have a voice that will now be heard.
And because of that voice I now have a choice to make.
I don’t know about you but I don’t know how much more of this I can take.
Gas prices are way too high,
One road trip cost as much as if you were to fly.
Taxes are killing me,
I buy something for 50 cents and it becomes a dollar fifty.
These price hikes are getting ridiculous,
Price of bread got so high it almost made me cuss.
I’ve got to pray to God when I’m on my way home from school,
It scares the crap out of me when the needle’s almost at E.
I’m tired of my friends and family risking their lives in a war,
They really don’t know what for.
Everyone I know that’s getting ready to go to Iraq is scared to death.
I think its all fine and dandy for those willing to go and fight.
Wouldn’t it all be better if you really had something real to fight for?
If the United States of America really strives to be more independent,
Can’t we lend that same hand to others?
Why must we be in so many unwanted foreign affairs?
Because when we’re in trouble no one else really cares.
How about our struggle for energy independence,
Do people believe that drilling into ice is the best thing to do?
We have so much to learn if that figures to be true.
What if another big piece of ice breaks off and causes total climate disruption?
I don’t believe I could handle anymore White House corruption.
Leading people to believe such a task would be safe.
Well enough of that.
I am registered to vote,
I am going to make my choice be heard
That is my final word.
