Now, it’s one thing to be black and proud, and there’s another to be ignorant and selfish. Jazz singer Rene Marie definitely blurred the line when she replaced the words of the Star Spangled Banner with our black national anthem, Lift Ev’ry Voice & Sing.

She was asked to sing the song before Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper’s annual “State of the City” address. When she opened her mouth, the right tune came out, but the wrong words followed. This was her explanation:

“What was going on in my head was, I wanted to express how I feel about living in the United States as a black woman, as a black person.”

The problem with “expressing” your feelings Ms. Renee is that receiving the honor of singing the National Anthem isn’t about you! It’s about showing respect and honor for your country!

A Councilman for the city, Charles Brown said that it was:

“not an NAACP convention.”

Conservative McCain machine writer & radio talk show host Michelle Malkin called it:

“racial separatism at an official government gathering.”

In the wake of Obama’s “The America We Love” patriotism speech, you know right wing Obama haters will have a FIELD day with this one (it’s already started).

Bad timing Rene, bad timing!

I’m not sure why she took this opportunity to put her black allegiance on blast, and it’s fine that she has it because I do too…but was it really appropriate? Let me know what you think!

Hey Angel thanks for putting up this post, but I’m going to have to disagree with you. I don’t think she was ignorant or selfish by singing the black national anthem. And I’m about to make a bunch of people mad, lol. First of all in order to understand the issue of the national anthem you have to know who wrote it and who was it intended to represent. Francis Scott Key was the writer of the national anthem who to his credit was anti-slavery, but unfortunately owned slaves and was against abolitionist, which makes him a hypocrite. So in 1814 when slavery was still very much going on, the lyrics were not intended for african americans. The song was adopted by President Woodrow Wilson as the national anthem, the same president who allowed segregation in most government departments, and while president at Printon University discourage black students from applying.Hmmm, I think knowing that bit of history wouldn’t make Ms. Rene Marie ignorant, especially when the song doesn’t even represent black people.

Secondly I think it was a very bold move but something that is much needed because its high time that the American people need to reflect about what we do and what we allow government officials to do. I don’t understand why anyone would be angry and feel disgusted about the black national anthem when its a beautiful song, and intially written for President Abraham Lincoln, a white man, for his birthday. I think alot of Americans are overly patriotic and take patriotism to the extreme espeically given the history of our country and the current state that it is in. The word patriotism has ethical connotations it implies that the country is a moral standard or moral value in itself. How this possible when there’s the war in Iraq, terrible health care, terrible education (check out the movie hard times at douglas high), high gas prices, and so much more. But yet we’re walk around waving our American flags think we’re better than ever other country. There is something seriously wrong with that, are we like brian washed or something. Americans complain about these issues but yet the same stupid president making these decision is still in office making crucial decisions for all of us and here we sit bitching about the national anthem, lol to show how patriotic we are. I don’t hate America I just want my country to best the best that it can be, and in order to do that we have to start taking action.

I will have to agree with Alexis, because when I saw the video of her singing, I did not see some self centered artist who wanted to make a name for herself. I saw a woman who was passionate and conflicted about the country she lived in. I understand that it was not the time or the place for that but I don’t understand why people are calling her racist for that. If anything she was attempting to make the song apply to everyone within the country.I don’t know, I don’t think patriotism has to come with inflexibility and blind loyalty. And the right wing is eating this up, they have been starving for something like this.

No, she wasn’t being selfish nor ignorant by doing what she did. Though i do believe that she did this at the wrong time. She could’ve waited til she was finished singing the anthem, then continued and gave them a heads up and rearranged the words. But the lady did it and they can’t get mad at her for showing how much she loves her race.

I like it. How many times have black people been bamboozled, hoodwinked and tricked? Too many to count. We’re sick and tired and not going to take it anymore. I say good for her for not being afraid to protest in song.
