Poverty Pushed to the Side?

Hey ya’ll I’m Ashley Slayton, a 22-year-old from Longview, Texas (soon to be a graduate of Prairie View A&M University) and I’m pumped about You(th) Vote because this is our opportunity to realize our power during a critical time in our nation’s history. I see You(th) Vote as a movement, and what better way to move forward than by discussing issues that affect millions of Americans?Starting with poverty…Just the other day at a barbecue in Herman park a friend of mine said to me….”How could she let herself get in this situation?”But I couldn’t fix my mouth to say that to the woman in front of me. She was clearly homeless, covered in dirt and toting a beat up, rolling suitcase.”If there’s any food left, I’ll take it,” she said.Something inside me shattered. Maybe it was the defeat in her voice that did it or the desperation in her eyes. Maybe it was the fact that we kept eating while she sat on a bench, patiently waiting for us to finish.I didn’t ask her why…and I didn’t go back for seconds. When I was younger I thought I’d carry around brown paper bags with lunches to give to anyone in need. I just knew I’d have a few spare dollars in the ash tray for anyone who stopped me at a light. Now that reality has sunk in, I realize that poverty is bigger than the local homeless man on the corner. Nearly thirty seven million Americans deal with it.What’s it going to take to restore these American’s lives? And are the presidential candidates talking about it enough? The issue’s flown pretty much below the radar during this campaign. It’s been sideswept by petty comments and hidden by the mudslinging. But it’s here and it isn’t going anywhere. What’s your position on the issue?-Ashley

I’m glad that someone asked the question that no one else seems to want to ask. With all the controversy and hype surrounding the presidential election, it seems that the only issues being skipped are the real issues. Instead of focusing on things that afflict this country like homelessness, they’re more focused on whether or not Hillary almost got shot when she went to the Middle East, or whether or not Barack and Jeremiah are going to have a secret rendezvous.
But even when issues are brought up, such as the homeowner crisis, the bulk of the publicity still goes to nitpicking the presidential candidates. The only thing that really shows is that this country is gone to hell in a handbasket, for real.
When there are people out on the street living in “Tent City” and all this type of thing, how dare these people have the nerve to talk about meaningless things that have no impact on life.
But, then again, that’s what being in America and more or less, being in this world is all about.
Peace.

It nice to see someone question the issue of poverty in America. It is definetly an issue that is not being talked about in the election. With the cost of college rising each year, gas prices rising, homeowner crisis, drugs, global warming, health care and so on. These issues are being swept under the rug, and these are the issues that real Americans face everyday. But i think as young people we should wait for the politicians to take any action, we need to start taking action in our communities first. We need to band together and start making things happen remember we don’t work for the politicians the politicians work for us!!!
Preach it Alexis! I agree. Poverty is always looked at on such a large scale. It’s broken down by statistics and made impersonal but one trip to the local community shelter changes things. And I think that’s exactly what we need to do- personalize it, make it a priority in our own lives and don’t stop visiting the shelter after the first trip. People are bound to follow our example.
The Homeless are an issue that many of us are not willing to address or think that they are homeless because they are lazy or on drugs. Giving them a few dollars so they will leave us alone or because we feel sorry for them. To really help them requires alot of work and time. Time is something few of us are willing to give and money is hard to come by. With soo many programs in place to help the homeless already {SALVATION ARMY,RED CROSS, VARIOUS CHURCHES} THEY ONLY NEED OUR SUPPORT AND TIME TO BE MORE EFFECTIVE. I have done this and it takes alot out of you.I think if public figures spoke up more we could do wonders to help the homeles. In America if it is not put our face we forget. Look how many of us have forgotten about the war and think that high gas prices is more important than Americans dieing for their country. AMERICA WAKEUP!!!!!!
Good things can be done while we yet live. REVOLUTION!
