Reading in Between the Monologues

Well it took forty minutes, but finally the debate switched from our troubled economy to the scheduled topic of foreign policy. Of course that didn’t happen without a lot of rambling from each candidate as they skillfully avoided answering the questions directed to them by moderator Jim Lehrer. Unfortunately I don’t speak gibberish, so a lot of that monologuing fell on deaf ears. Actually, with the current state of our economy, I’m sure American voters would rather have heard a ninety minute debate about the economy instead of foreign policy. Since that didn’t happen, I broke down a few key points of the conversation on foreign policy for You(th) Voters.

When Lehrer asked the candidates about their take on the Iraq war Obama responded that it was a mistake. “We took our eye off the ball,” the senator said. He cited several reasons for his statement including:

  • “We didn’t know what it would cost us”
  • “We didn’t know what our exit strategy was”
  • “We hadn’t finished the job in Afghanistan”

McCain disagreed and said that it wasn’t important whether or not it we should have entered the war but how we finished it. The senator said what’s important is “how we leave, when we leave and what we leave behind.” He also accused Senator Obama of refusing to acknowledge that we are winning in Iraq.

Winning what? Wouldn’t whether or not we’re winning depend on what success in Iraq looks like? Does anyone know what that victory would look like anymore? The candidates also discussed Iran, Pakistan and Russia. This was right around the time the conversation turned into a juvenile sparring match, with both candidates interrupting the other. McCain repeatedly referred to Obama as “naive” and Obama pointed out McCain’s obvious support of President Bush’s policies over the last eight years.

When Lehrer asked the candidates about whether or not the nation could experience a possible repeat of 9/11, both candidates replied that the nation is safer today than it was during 9/11 but that we had a long way to go. All in all the debate was informative, but a little dry. I found myself yawning through the last thirty minutes or so. What do you think?

Was the debate informative or a repeat of everything the candidates have been saying over the last few months? Was there really a winner in tonight’s debate? And which candidate is ready to lead? You tell me.

I think the biggest thing here is, know who you are voting for.. The Republican party is showing time and time again how conniving they can be. I was offended when they brought Palin to the scene, because for one thing, no one ever heard of her till now so it is blatantly obvious McSame brought her on to win the women votes. Well he sure does not have my vote.
Go Obama!!!

I feel that both John McCain and Obama were saying the same things that i have already heard during this whole election. I want to hear what their plans are to get us out of the war. i don’t want to hear their wants i want to hear what they can actually do. I feel that every word that comes out of their mouths are wants and not reality of what they can really do with in the first four years. YES! GO OBAMA! But, i’m tired of people around saying yea i’m going to vote foe Obama because he is black. My thing is if you don’t know anything about what is going on around you you should not vote. if you are going to vote watch a debate then you will know who you want to win. PLEASE don’t watch the news they only spit you stuff that they think you want to hear. the BEST way is to watch a DEBATE !!!

911 WAS CREATED BY THE GOVERNMENT. WAR IS INTENDED NOT TO BE WON BUT TO SUBSTAINED. iT DOESN’T MATTER WHO WINS THE DEBATES, OR THE WARS, OR THE PRESIDENCY. IRAN. CERIA, THEY WILL ALL BE AT WAR SOON. i’LL BE GLAD WHEN IT’S OVER.

We all need to understand this is not a black and white thing. Who ever wins this election will be the President of the United States of America, a place where were we all live.

Mc Cain’s claim to glory is that he was captured in Viet Nam, I think I have to agree with Chris Rock, I want the person that didn’t get captured leading me.

Who ever is elected we all need to come together.

SENATOR OBAMA WAS OUTSTANDING DOING THE FRIDAY NIGHT DEBATE. HE HELD HIS GROUND AND DISPLAYED VERY GOOD DISCIPLINE. SENATOR OBAMA USES HIS MIND VERY WELL AND HE DOES NOT WAFFLE AT ANSWERING QUESTIONS.

SENATOR MCCAIN IS A VERY RUDE AND NASTY BECAUSE HE DOES NOT HAVE THE SUPERIOR ANSWERS TO MAKE SENATOR OBAMA APPEAR VERY STUPID. THE TIDE IS CHANGING (THE GUARD) AND MOST AMERICANS CANNOT HANDLE THE CHANGE.

Barack Obama was very eloquent, precise and well versed in his speaking. He is poised, calm and very diplomatic which shows he has self-control. His ideas are great and whatever he is lacking in I am sure Biden will come in with that part.

McCain has the military experience, but I do not trust him. I believe he will be Bush again to the 25th power and we will all be back on the plantations.

Vanessa, enough said McCain could not look Obama in the eyes and he repeated over and over that” you don’t understand”. This is the same way the Bull Connors, George Wallace, David Duke all act when talking to blacks.

How many damn stories is old ass MCCAin going to tell. I mean damn. He is suppose to run the country not put us to bed. He never explains he just tells a story to fill in the time.

McCain will not address the black man. So it pains me to know black folks will vote for a white man who would not even look nor address a black man to his face. he talked down to black as racist do.

mcCain never addresses the people but he alawys ackowledge the military. Republicans are pro military not civlian. Not country first it is army/militray/core first. Except until they come home. then are treated like ~%?* like the rest of us, if they can’t go back.

noone asked is McCain going to reinstate the draft?

I think the debate wasn’t very clear for either candidate. It was a repeating of everything that has already been said. It’s not very detailed. When I hear a debate I want to hear what the plans are what could be the consequences and how it would benefit the economy. Neither candidate answsered the questions directly.

Hello Everyone. Barack Obama won that Debate fair and Square. Can you believe MCain said Ronald Reagan was his hero! That say’s it all. But honestly now. I truly feel that America is not ready for a black President. Obama is popular. But he will not win. He will not win because he will not get the white vote. America would rather have a 72 year old statue with his, no nothing about anything sidekick (Palin) for President then an intelligent person like Senator Obama. Mark my words this day. This country has not changed, and it will never change. Racism is engrained in the bones of this country.
