Reading in Between the Monologues

Well it took forty minutes, but finally the debate switched from our troubled economy to the scheduled topic of foreign policy. Of course that didn’t happen without a lot of rambling from each candidate as they skillfully avoided answering the questions directed to them by moderator Jim Lehrer. Unfortunately I don’t speak gibberish, so a lot of that monologuing fell on deaf ears. Actually, with the current state of our economy, I’m sure American voters would rather have heard a ninety minute debate about the economy instead of foreign policy. Since that didn’t happen, I broke down a few key points of the conversation on foreign policy for You(th) Voters.

When Lehrer asked the candidates about their take on the Iraq war Obama responded that it was a mistake. “We took our eye off the ball,” the senator said. He cited several reasons for his statement including:

  • “We didn’t know what it would cost us”
  • “We didn’t know what our exit strategy was”
  • “We hadn’t finished the job in Afghanistan”

McCain disagreed and said that it wasn’t important whether or not it we should have entered the war but how we finished it. The senator said what’s important is “how we leave, when we leave and what we leave behind.” He also accused Senator Obama of refusing to acknowledge that we are winning in Iraq.

Winning what? Wouldn’t whether or not we’re winning depend on what success in Iraq looks like? Does anyone know what that victory would look like anymore? The candidates also discussed Iran, Pakistan and Russia. This was right around the time the conversation turned into a juvenile sparring match, with both candidates interrupting the other. McCain repeatedly referred to Obama as “naive” and Obama pointed out McCain’s obvious support of President Bush’s policies over the last eight years.

When Lehrer asked the candidates about whether or not the nation could experience a possible repeat of 9/11, both candidates replied that the nation is safer today than it was during 9/11 but that we had a long way to go. All in all the debate was informative, but a little dry. I found myself yawning through the last thirty minutes or so. What do you think?

Was the debate informative or a repeat of everything the candidates have been saying over the last few months? Was there really a winner in tonight’s debate? And which candidate is ready to lead? You tell me.

It was hard to pick a winner in the debate, but if I had to choose it would be Obama. Both candidates held their ground on each of their particular stances. Everyone was saying how Obama did not have any foreign policy experience. To me it looked like Obama knew what he was talking about and McCain did too. At the end of this debate neither one of these candidates knocked it out of park. The only thing that I noticed was Obama looked McCain in the eyes with confidence. McCain on the other hand kept looking down at his podium, what’s up with that. The next debate is going to be very crucial for both candidates.

Would like to talk about rude when hillary clinton was giving one of her speechs sen obama rudely walked out and interrupted it to show is face and that was on tv and the only reason why that sen obama looked at sen McCain is becasue he was asked if he had any thing to say to him from the person who was in chrange of the debate to say it to sen McCain do not forget that the hole debate was not only seen national but also international and nether of them had a strong stand on the economy on one really does

This is why there are four debates not one, but FOUR! There was no clear winner that why all debates are important. The candidate who does well in all four debates will be the winner. Yep

David,

I understand what you are trying to say; however, I think you are coming off as greedy and selfish yourself and you are making absolute judgements that don’t apply to everybody. It is very true that there are a lot of people who are lazy and who really do want things handed to them…but they aren’t just poor people, a lot of rich people have the give me-give me-give me attitude as well when they didn’t work for what they have. Maybe you are not struggling right now as much as a lot of other people, but I see people who are going through it every day. What do you say to the people who have done nothing but work their butts off working two jobs to get through college, and when they get out, it’s difficult to find employment that pays back your loans or provides health insurance, or even helps you pay all of these bills monthly? Fortunately, right now it’s not that bad for me, but I know people that it is. People keep talking about Obama wanting to take from the rich and give to the poor, but that’s only partially correct. I agree that many rich people donate their money to charities, but charities only affect certain types of people with particular issues. It doesn’t help the general population from day to day. And it is my personal belief that if a person has what his neighbor needs and is in a position to be helpful, then it is his responsibility to do so when the person being helped isn’t trying to take advantage. There are those who do, and I agree with you that those people don’t deserve handouts. Financially I wish I could do more to help my friends around me. I don’t think Obama’s plan will fix everybody’s problems, but I do think it could help get most of the responsible people who just can’t catch a break get on their feet, which in the long-run is better for everybody.

Pakistan has nuclear weapons also if iran gets nuclear weapons other counties well get them to bigger problems this would be a big mess that obama i hope does not get the world in to because he was to talk and give people time to get them if he wins the joke house .

John McCain was so rude. He would not even look at Obama. By not looking at Obama, he did not acknowledge Obama. I noticed during the handshake at the beginning that McCain was going to be very disrespectful during the debate. This is a tactic that racist use. McCain was trying degrade Obama. But it did not work because McCain looked like a complete idiot. He also looked very much like a President Bush in training.

W’ell see what happens in the next few weeks. It was interesting see that Palin was not there to take any interviews, but Biden was. If she was concerned about her and McCain’s campaign why was she not present.
We have to know if they are ready to be prez

David…you’re so closed minded and stereotypical..it’s hard to see your point…You’re so easily trying to blame the American people for this calamity, without giving its due to the greedy CEO’s on Wallstreet…I’ve watched ”educated” Americans, lead this country into a pit of dismal porportion….lazy doesn’t belong to one particular race…like ignorance..it abounds…McCain is not the answer..he is part of the problem…if you would honestly check out his history during his congressional career…you’d be as angry as the rest of America..and not living in your own soap-box.. It amazes me that the people for McCain..help promote innuendos and lies…no facts…keep saying how experienced he is…at what?..I’ve only watched a tired old man…do or say whatever he can to get in the Oval office…But hey..let’s keep sending our brave soldiers over to die…adding to the 4,000 lost lives already..while Afghanistan and Pakistan…build their nuclear power…and let the terrorist regimes grow in numbers..and keep fighting endlessly in Iraq..sooo smart…that’s what we need in a leader..*laughs*…

Listen David its one thing to voice your opinion but when you sit there and put Obama out there as if he is setting the USA for doom you actually don’t do Mcain any justice because people who look at this election for what it really is and not about race and wether or not one or the other disrespected the other canidate, those people will see the hogwash your putting out there. Mcain isn’t the bad guy but he sure hasn’t promoted any different strategies that can help the USA out of the problems and situations that we are currently in. We need the right person in office and I think that we need to remember to think outside the box. In many opinions Obama is the right person but if you feel differently that is totally okay just don’t let your opinion stunt anyone elses.

I AGREE Honor,

David and rednblack are clearly closed minded and stereotypical that’s it’s so funny. These two idiots know deep in their hearts that OBAMA spoke the truth and is the BETTER MAN for PRESIDENT.

Now, the reason why McCain DIDN’T look OBAMA in the eyes is BECAUSE he’’s a COWARD and he Knew OBAMA was telling the truth, I KNOW you heard of the old saying, THE TRUTH HURTS:

And david, I don’t know what debate you were watching because OBAMA was NOT being RUDE, it was ONLY MCcain ass, trying to over talk him because he didn’t WANT to hear the truth and upset because he got his ass whipped with pure knowledge and facts. And Obama was defending hisself from LIES that MCcain kept on saying about him.

OBAMA WON this debate for SURE: INDEED because McCAIN KEPT DANCING IN CIRCLES with his answers when asked questions and going on about things that DID NOT or WAS NOT important or relevant that obtained to the questions asked. Now Obama on the other hand, came striaght to the point, answered the questions with dignity, looked his opponet in the EYES and kept it moving:

So all that I have to say is anyone voting for MCcain still, is infact a prejustice, envy person, someone who just don’t give a dammm about their life or just plain STUPID:

OBAMA 08:………………………………………………………………….
