Reading in Between the Monologues

Well it took forty minutes, but finally the debate switched from our troubled economy to the scheduled topic of foreign policy. Of course that didn’t happen without a lot of rambling from each candidate as they skillfully avoided answering the questions directed to them by moderator Jim Lehrer. Unfortunately I don’t speak gibberish, so a lot of that monologuing fell on deaf ears. Actually, with the current state of our economy, I’m sure American voters would rather have heard a ninety minute debate about the economy instead of foreign policy. Since that didn’t happen, I broke down a few key points of the conversation on foreign policy for You(th) Voters.

When Lehrer asked the candidates about their take on the Iraq war Obama responded that it was a mistake. “We took our eye off the ball,” the senator said. He cited several reasons for his statement including:

  • “We didn’t know what it would cost us”
  • “We didn’t know what our exit strategy was”
  • “We hadn’t finished the job in Afghanistan”

McCain disagreed and said that it wasn’t important whether or not it we should have entered the war but how we finished it. The senator said what’s important is “how we leave, when we leave and what we leave behind.” He also accused Senator Obama of refusing to acknowledge that we are winning in Iraq.

Winning what? Wouldn’t whether or not we’re winning depend on what success in Iraq looks like? Does anyone know what that victory would look like anymore? The candidates also discussed Iran, Pakistan and Russia. This was right around the time the conversation turned into a juvenile sparring match, with both candidates interrupting the other. McCain repeatedly referred to Obama as “naive” and Obama pointed out McCain’s obvious support of President Bush’s policies over the last eight years.

When Lehrer asked the candidates about whether or not the nation could experience a possible repeat of 9/11, both candidates replied that the nation is safer today than it was during 9/11 but that we had a long way to go. All in all the debate was informative, but a little dry. I found myself yawning through the last thirty minutes or so. What do you think?

Was the debate informative or a repeat of everything the candidates have been saying over the last few months? Was there really a winner in tonight’s debate? And which candidate is ready to lead? You tell me.

Jeremy…where did you get your facts from? where did you get those outlandish numbers?…again…half truths…this country was built on the backs of ”uneducated and underachievers”..so the so-called haves..can say garbage like..”i already am doing so much”…how egotistical to say..you’re carrying and paying taxes for middle and poor Americans…the supposed 700 billion dollar bailout isn’t for the uneducated or underachievers..it’s for the CEO’s of this country…small businesses pay increased taxes to cover all the loop holes, big businesses use to not pay out much…and they have bled America to make themselves richer…is that what an achiever is to you?..An achiever to me is a man or woman who works hard for their family..day in and day out..sacrifice for their children to have a greater way of life..not the pampered…Middle americans carry this country..always have…our dedication make this country..we’re suffering now because of your greediness…uncaring attitude towards anyone, but you’re wallet…I’m pushing for ALL of you crooks to go to jail for what you have done…and now that you may have to pay REAL taxes your upset..good..it’s about time…Go Obama!!…Rock the vote!

LadyofWisdom:
Yes, I know that I just wanted him to say it. I think we (me included) spend too much time talking about and responding to david and rednblack. They say things to intentionally push bottoms to get a rise. That’s how they get off. I not talking about the different opinions or ideas, after all that is the whole purpose of the comments section. I think everyone here welcomes the exchange of different ides and opinions. Its the racist comments and insults that are directed to the people that leave comments that are out of place here.

I feel that Obama won this debate. I must admit, I cannot wait to see the Biden-Palin debate next Thursday night. That should be quite a show! The only thing that bothers me is that I heard that Biden and Palin will only be allowed to answer questions that the Moderator asks, and they will not be allowed to speak directly to each other, nor engage in any dialogue. This does not sound like a debate to me, it sounds like a question and answer session. Give me a break! I am sick and tired of the McCain camp trying to shelter and protect Palin. We need to know if she can think outside of the box, and without a script. OBAMA 2008

Body language says it all. McCain couldn’t stop blinking, or look anyone in the eye…..nuf’ said!

I am not a black man. anyone who has seen John McCain have a discussion with someone else should realize that their was something inherently problematic with his body language towards Barack Obama. On that alone it showed me disdain, disrespect and was just plain wrong! Barack should have %~*$% slapped him and said Hey I am over here! You can look at a black man and you won’t turn to stone. Not looking at Barack made it creepy! Barack showed class! Not me…I would have told McCain first off stop telling me I don’t understand and that I’m naive, I’m a Harvard grad, understand world issues and the plight of the common man. (People who know how many houses and cars they own). Barack’s wife released her incomes taxes why hasn’t McCain’s? He should have said something about that dummy Sara Palin who believes because of Russia’s proximity to Alaska it qualifies her to be VP. folks if anyone wants to see where this country is heading watch the 3 interviews on you tube of Sarah Palin and see if you can figure out what the freak she’s talking about, see how inept she is. John McCain picked her as the most qualified to be VP possibly PREISDENT?
Please America wake-up and lets not put John McCain and that dummy in the white house…it’s more that black and white!

I think Mr Obama came out the winner with a slight limp. The next debate he has to shut down Mr McCains efforts in trying to paint Mr Obama as …’He just don’t understand’..This is an age old saying..’..The Good old boys’… Use to say when they were trying to say a Black man is not smart enough to do a white mans job!!!! When Mr McCain starts that sh^t again he has to put him in his place and remind him of what..’ era’.. He is living in I wish Mr Obama could just take him by the colar and shake the dust off of him but then Mr Obama would make history for all the wrong reasons!!!!!!!!!

More than likely Obama will be our next president here is what concerns me about what he said last night:

Lehrer “How specifically will you alter your programs to account for the 700 Billion” loan buyouts?”

In fact he asked that question 4 times because Obama would not even give him ONE item!

This 700 Billion buyout will severely hamstring the next President…..where will the money come from to fund the 300 to 500 Billion dollars of new programs Obama is calling for including a tax reduction for 95% of the country. THE MATH DOESNT WORK !!!!!!

Well we sighed and gasped for air out of boredom once we realized that McCain is deceitful and is a liar. Now we fully understand why in the world he selected Sarah Palin as his VP. They both have absolutely no purpose in life and could care less for the people in America. McCain is only concerned of his circle of interest while Sen. Obama is seeking to be as fair as possible to all people. Sen. Obama is rational and realistic. We know that McCain said a lot of things last night to poke jabs at Sen. Obama but what about the American people? we were left out of McCain’s equation if we did not fall under 2 categories: Rich or Military. As far as I am concerned McCain can go sit down and allow the most wise of the two to run this country. OBAMA 08!!!!

this election is a joke. I have never seen so much racism and sexism in one chain of events. hillary’s rallies had audiences comprised of almost nothing but women. How many lower middle/middle class african americans are going to vote against obama. think about it people, there are many black americans that are going to vote for obama based not on the issues, but his skin color. that IS racism. not an educated vote for next leader of our country.

There are many white americans that are going to vote for mccain based not on the issues, but his skin color. That IS racism not an educated vote for next leader of our country.

Ignoance is a virus; Truth is a cure. Mc Same & Sarah ” Alaska Disaster” Palin will complete the spread of Americas Moral death. Unless we come together against the lies of the current Buch regime. Let’s introduce the cure to this crisis. Barack “The Rock” Obama & Joe ” Bulldog” Biden our Middle Class messengers of The Truth! With such an overdue change in place. Fear will be replaced with Faith.

MET9 Said on

As soonas the debate ended the news medias rushed to name mccain the winner. This morning a great mony of them spent the morning eating those words. I know that Obama trounced mccain on each issue.Just be aware people that newsweek reported this week that republicans all across the country have already pushed through new legislation to make it harder for some people to cast a vote. Its hidden in the requirement for picture identification. Don’t be fooled, this new path of legislation will have the greatest impact upon poorer comunities where its harder for people to get to their local DMVs and obtain them. The republicans are scared, and rightly so. Because of them our nation is in a crisis with no sollution being put forth that will have any benefit to middle or lower income families. No matter what “bailout” plan they choose, it means that our tax dollars are going to be loaned to banks and lending institutions who will then loan it back to us with interest attached, therefore making a profit for themselves off of the money that they borrowed from us in the first place.

Ashlee Said on

Ok. So here’s my issue. It all boils down to who we’d think could run this country better and fix this huge mess that we’ve been in for the last eight years….Option One: A college educated man with a doctorate degree, which says he has all the book smarts to get the job done. AND a with a running mate with the same credentials. OR, Option Two: An older individual with no form of education other than military experience which very much shows. AND a running mate with a journalism degree??? Hmm. I would place my life in the hands of the individual with the book smarts. Period. McCain can’t even look his opponent in the eye while addressing him nor can he stop blinking because he doesn’t know what to say! How can he fix ANY issue? He’s old as dirt, what happens if something happens to his old behind during his presidency if elected? We’re stuck with a housewife who’s degree says she can’t do anything for us but predict the darn weather! And if this is so…Europe here I come!!!

McCain had the same ole same ole lies and innuendos but I found Obama ready to check every one of McCain’s attacks. The best he could do was try to insult Obama by insinuating that he was naive. Obama even had on a bracelet too from some dead soldiers mom somewhere in America like McCain tried to run with. I think that McCain avoided using the words common folks, average people or Middle class to identify the targeted victims of this economic fiasco, because subconsciously he know that he does not really know any of these people at all. Obama at least took up the arguement and pressed the case as to why Mccain would support tax breaks for his buddies for Big OIL to the detriment of the average American that did not own multiple homes like he did.
