two groomsmen

Since my first post on this topic sparked so much dialogue, I decided to keep y’all updated with any news on gay marriage across the country.  Yesterday the spokeswoman for NY Governor David Paterson announced that the Governor recently issued a memo to state agencies informing them that the state must recognize same-sex marriages in states and countries where they are currently legal.

This directive is not as earth-shattering as the California Supreme Court’s ruling on May 15 to legalize gay marriage, because same-sex marriage is still illegal in the State of New York.  All this means is that the state must recognize (which means to give them the same rights and privileges that come with a heterosexual marriage) same-sex marriages that occurred in states and countries where it is legal.

So if two gay men or a lesbian couple marry in California, Massachusetts, or a country where it’s legal, and they move to the state of New York, they will be able to retain there married status despite gay marriage being illegal in New York.  However, gay New York residents are still unable to get married in New York.

Do you think this is fair?  Do you think this is the first step to New York going all the way to make gay marriage legal?  And again, will this issue affect who you vote for in the November presidential election?

Hit me up to break it down.

I think it is a good thing. If they don’t want to allow gay people to get married there they should at least recognize the marriage from somewhere else. Brazil, (my country) is like that by the way. My partner is American and we lived there for 5 years, one of the reason that we decided to come to Brazil and leave the US was because of the respect that there is here towards gay people.

Hey,

I think it will definitely increase tension in November, but I did read an article on NPR that said that at the very least, it will be difficult to ban gay marriage.

This article actually breaks down a lot of information from several sources, and reflects a bit on how what happens in a single state, especially California.

this is great gay/lesbian couples should have the 1,200 rights and benefits of marriage by the state and federal government.

Well even though in my state (California)it is illegal for same-sex marriages, I believe that it should perfectly be legal. I say this because people are born with nature rights and 1 of those rights states that people have their right to the pursuit of happiness. So if marrying the same-sex makes people happy then it should perfectly be legal. Some people say that it is wrong because of religion and I am so religious but i still think that it should be ok for it to be legal because it is said in the Bible that nobody should judge each other so it (same-sex marriages)should be able to be open in public and also legal.

I think it’s a good thing. From the little I know about New York it does NOT mean they’re on their way to making gay marriage legal in their state.
I don’t know how it will affect things in November. I don’t see that strong of a connection right now. Maybe one will come.
Either way, give people their rights, dangit!

Hey guys! Thanks for your responses thus far.

Sidnei, that’s an interesting insight about the issue from an international standpoint. It’s cool that gay people are accepted so well in Brazil. Why is that so? What is different about Brazil that makes it more open to gay men and lesbians?

I’m with you, Rachel. I definitely think the prospect of gay marriage lingering in the air will be play a role in the election; the Republicans did it in 2004 and they’ll do it again in 2008. Thanks for sharing that article.

Queerunity, your blog is interesting. Thanks for putting us on to it. Where can I find more info on the 1,200 rights that you talked about?

Nesha, good points. I’m gonna play the devil’s advocate though. I know this is an extreme, but what if going around punching random people in the face is what makes me happy? Should that, then, be legal? Where is the line drawn between “happiness” and legality?

Marcus! What up bro! Thanks for chiming in on the discussion. I’m with you in that I don’t see much of a direct connection between this and the election either—but that’s never stopped politicians from making one in order to exploit it. Also, and this is posed to everyone, is marriage really a “right”? Where in the Constitution does it say that people have the “right” to get married?

Great discussion peeps. Let’s keep it going.

Even if I believe being gay is morally wrong.
Only GOD is alound to jugde, and I believe gay
couples should have all the rights like all
americans including ,marriage and benefits…..

I believe that people should be able to marry who they want. Even if it is gay people. They have to deal with GOD not us. We all have flaws or have done something against our religion so who are we to judge. Who are we to say gay people are wrong and right. Who are we to say they should or should not be able to marry.Let people love who they wanna love. Just because you think it iswrong doesnt mean they shouldnt be able to spend the rest of their life with the one they love.

Well, as a lesbian college student, i say that gay marriage should be allowed. And its not just because Im gay, but for other reasons. whenever someone thinks of gays the immediately talk about religion at one point. no one can judge you but GOD. In the bible it tells you that no sin is greater than the other, and the only sin that God hiimself will not forgive is killing yourself. In the ten commandments, there is nothing saying ‘ thou shalt not be gay’. Even when jeseus comes ack there will be gayness in paradise because you have FOREVER to be perfect, you just cant act on it. There was even a lesbian angel. the bible tells it all. You just gotta read. so i say that I should be able to love who i wanna love, because gay or not, people judge people anyway.
