That’s A Wrap

June 28th, 2009

I almost caught a case of the Carl Thomas after watching Janet Jackson speak for the Jackson family on stage.

She is incredibly strong for coming out so soon.

And though it may have been short notice, I think Ne-Yo did an excellent job channeling his inner Michael Jackson.

All and all the crowd seemed engaged with the show, but what say you?

What was your highlight?

Was it Beyonce? Keri? Maxwell? The MJ and O’Jays tributes!

The skill of Tevin Campbell’s make up artist?!

Let me know.

Souljah Boy in a past interview “Oh wait! Hold up! Shout out to the slave masters! Without them we’d still be in Africa. We wouldn’t be here to get this ice and tattoos.” As a daughter of Nigerian immigrants his statement disgusted me and many others as well, so I was surprised to see him allowed to spew even more ignorance that night. Don Cornelius…BET why did you guys allow him to get up there and speak? Wasn’t he arrested for domestic abuse? Why prevent Chris Brown from performing? As for Lil Wayne and Drake, I liked how someone here said it was like R. Kelly singing the bump n grind with 12 year old girls, yeah it was that bad! Where was Kid Cudi? or Wale? Everyone hyping Drake as the next new artist, but his performance was below par…. I could go on and on.

The show was a complete and utter travesty! I can say though, thank you BET for giving me a reminder of why I avoid watching your network.

Like those before me, I hope the BET staff, with Debra Lee at the helm, seriously reads these comments. Your show SUCKED big time. Did you not realize that there would be generations of people watching our BET in anticipation of a classy, heartfelt tribute? I m almost 50 years old. MJ was my first boyfriend (in my mind anyway, lol). I don’t want to see Lil Wayne’s ass anywhere. You glorify and award him, with his 15 kids and 15 baby mama’s. Yet, you let Jay-Z block Chris Brown’s appearance. My, my, my…I’m really ashamed. There was so much wrong with the sho, that I won’t even go there. Enjoyed Ne-Yo. Really enjoyed Mary Mary and the Queen……not much else there….What was up with Beyonce. She really has no self respect does she? And how did you get Jamie Foxx as the host. He was HORRIBLE and I saw that thing at the end where he walked up the stairs and the youg lady handed him a script and he threw it on the floor saying “I don’t need no script” Watch yourself baby…the clock is ticking and your 15 minutes could end real soon. How rude!

I was so appalled at this shameful attempt at a tribute show for Michael Jackson. BET do you not realize the entire world was watching this show and once again, you did what was expected of you, put on a stereotypical, ghetto fabulous minstrel show. The only thing missing was someone in black face paint. Debra Lee you should be fired for this mess. And you had the nerve to thank your staff for setting the black race back 200 years.

I cannot believe that BET allowed all the profanity and vulgar language not to mention, Lil Wayne and Drake singing about how they want to “F*uck every girl in the world (and obviously Lil Wayne is attempting to do just that, dropping babies as he goes) with little girls on stage. How inappropriate to say the least. Watching this make me so mad and for once I was ashamed to be African-American. BET needs to go off the air for good because obviously we are not ready.

Jamie Fox was undoubtedly the worst BET Awards show host of all time. He was not the man for the job. He brought down the image and reputation of BET with his comments, attempted jokes and poor vocals.

BET you have greater standards and talents within your organization, Jamie Foxx’s performance was such an embarrassment, dissappointment and he positioned BET to have to recover for his failure and inability to host a high class tribute.

If this was a re-worked show to honor MJ, I would love to know what the original show was supposed to be. Oops…on second thought I DON’T want to know.

I agree with all the previous posters on the BET award show – it was awful. But there were some excellent moments (NE, NeYo Old School set, OJays tribute) – so shout out to those performers.

I hope that BET and their management finds a way to truly honor Michael Jackson with a show devoted to him through song & dance – his songs & dance moves. Think about it Ms Lee, there’s still time to redeem yourself. Everyone is watching!!!

I’M WHITE. I’m 50 yrs old. Michael Jackson has been in my life ever since I can remember. Jamie Fox was totally out of line when he said, ” Michael Jackson was black. He belonged to us and we just shared him with them!” What the f_ _ k was that suppose to mean?? Let me ask you Jamie Fox, how would you feel if I were to say ” Clint Eastwood or Bruce Willis is white, They belong to us. We just shared them with you.” “We let you watch their movies like you let us listen to Michael Jackson’s music.”
Jamie Fox, you made an ass of yourself and your moonwalk imitation was an embarassment.

i know that a lot of people probably won’t agree with what i have to say,but this year’s bet awards was by far the worst one i have ever saw. and to add insult to injury the song that lil wayne and that guy sang before janet came out was so disrespectful that bet should be ashamed. i will say to the jacson family that they have my deepest sympathy and utmost respect at this very dark time in their lives. bet has left a bad taste in my mouth with the way they chose to do their so-called tribute to michael jackson and they have lost me forever as a fan. the entire show was just awful.

DB Said on

I would have to agree with the many comments received so far. The 2008 BET AWARDS was not very good. I agree with the earlier comment that more A-list performers needed to be there. Why didn’t Alicia Keys, Chrisette Michelle, Mary J Blige, or Musiq perform? Chris Brown definitely would have been fantastic. I do not condone what Chris Brown did earlier this year. However, is he really the only singer, entertainer, or figure in the public eye that has been found guilty of abuse? or any other questionable behavior? Mary J Blige has spoken of one such artist. Did we boycott him or his group? I think not. In fact they continued to receive airplay. With that in mind, our focus should be on being supportive and helping our young people to get on and stay on track. We need to reach out to the young and old alike who may have taken a false step. Michael J had love for people. We need to think about his song “Man in the Mirror.”

I really hope BET reads these comments and does something to really honor Michael Jackson.

I already commented about this year’s award show and so called “tribute” to the most talented performer and groundbreaker in the world but my blood is still boiling!!!!! BET, after all this time, you guys still seem to not have gotten it together. I feel like this was such an embarrassment to the Jackson family, the world was basicly watching and you all blew it. Last minute or not, you guys could have done a hell of a lot better, tribute?, with the exception of Neyo, Maxwell, the OJays, a few others, this was a disgrace. Michael being the kind person he was probably appreciated your attempts but was probably frowning on how half assed this was. I am discontinuing watching BET because you guys made me hide my head in shame!! Sorry Janet you had to be apart of this.

Fedup Said on

Listen Bet, we are tired of your no class ghetto network. It’s time you do better or shut down. Time you stop embarrassing blacks.

a friend of mine said that after watching the BET AWARDS show he has turned into a white supremist. So have I. Please do not insult us Ms. Lee with your “72″ excuse–what a worthless effort–what a terrible display of us. I nor my fanily will ever watch BET again!-Yes it was that bad–your channel and broadcast is no longer needed nor wanted.

What happened to the female that Jay Z knock the taste out of a few years, ago. Youtube had him on blast abusing an unknown female. How many endorsements and performances were cancelled because of his shameful antics as his entourage watched?

robin Said on

Whatever happened to the young lady that Jay Z knocked the taste out of several years ago. It was onYoutube. His entourage did nothing to assist the young lady. He was not ostrazied for his actions. He got married, continued to make public appearances, and money. Wa it okay to hit that female because it was not Rhianna? Wrong should not be condoned. Neither should hypocrisy be ignored. Please, please, please, please, please, in the name of James Brown, do not air another encore performance of the 2009 BET Awards.

I’ve watched BET since the early 1980’s and have been proud of its growth, even through its new acquisition and transition. The 2009 BET Awards were (for me) the greatest disappointment BET has ever presented. The program did attempt to honor Michael Jackson, offer diversity of music/styles, and pay homage to the cultural contributions of our entertainment veterans. Instead, the 2009 BET Awards broadcasted around the world to its largest audience in history every stereotypical image that has been attached to African Americans: disorganization/lack of thematic continuity, buffoonery, disrespect for women and children, foul language, a lack of class, and an environment of commoness for an awards show (which is presented to exhibit the highest social behavior and artistry of its participants). The degree of excellence for the BET Awards have declined every year and I fault the producers, who have no knowledge of music. Their vanity subvert the efforts of those in the craft who slave every day to keep the music (and yes, hip-hop culture) of African Americans respectable in all genres. Why some “star” in the audience didn’t stand up and say “This is all wrong!”…or…why some “star” didn’t get up and walk out disappoints me. Still, as a viewer and musician who is highly regarded…please know that this was an embarrassment and great disappointment. I hope next year’s program will surprise us with a show of vision and quality.

About Michael Jackson and his very talented family. “We are all wounded by this loss, MJ is a part of all of the hearing worlds life and many of the non-hearing, because what he did, he did so well, no one can truthfully say that they never saw anything at all by MJ that didn’t hold their attention. We now need the Jackson family to come together and be OUR family and give some of the creativity their whole family graced this world with. I don’t say this selfishly, but I say it because WE need you, all of you. Help us heal as we are all praying for you. Michael dedicated his life to entertaining and teaching us. He never gave up, from his candy store to his rehearsals at the Staples Center. Jackson family, hear me! You have the same DNA, the same spirit to entertain and teach, please reunite and continue his work; you know that’s what he would want. I know because he came to me in a dream and told me to publish this. I, like you, was sure that I am incapable of making anyone believe this, but he said: “Go ahead; what do you have to lose.” I don’t know if it was real, or just my subconscious, but I have to say this or I cannot rest. I’ll tell this dream to anyone that wants to hear it. http://www.LOST.videoDVD.info

I did not want to comment until I felt that things had died down a little. I really
do believe that Ms. Debra Lee wanted to do something really honorable and
great (in terms of a tribute for Michael Jackson) as part of the 2009 BET
Awards Show, but she (being the leader and in charge) FAILED miserably!
I believe that you failed Ms. Lee because you rushed into something that you
could have waited to do much better and much more appropriately as far as
the tribute to MJ goes. However, this leads me to wonder and worry about
how good was the original show ( had MJ not died) would have really been!!!
There was talent and then there was nothing but DISGRACE. What message
are we sending to our people, specifically our black YOUTH??? Some of the
artist/performers choose NOT to use their TALENT in appropriate ways. You, Ms. Debra Lee, and even your co-workers, Stephen Hill, had the SAY,
the important say, in what should have taken place on that stage. How
could you allow MJ’s music legacy and his family to be humiliated like that?
NO, I do NOT think that you should be fired Ms. Lee, because we all make
some mistakes and must get right back up and redeem ourselves. That is
what YOU need to do whether you agree or not, and that’s if you have any
pride at all. You need to start with an apology to the JACKSON FAMILY however you wish to do it. In the future, you should know better that to have
Jamie Fox as a host and people like Lil Wayne and T-Payne representing us or anybody for that matter. Ving Rhames and Bobby Brown were also a
total disgrace and should NOT be allowed to represent anyone or anything.
You cannot tell me that you were not uncomfortable with many of the disgraceful performances at the 2009 BET AWARDS. And I know that if you
have just one ounce of COMMON SENSE, Ms. Lee, you could NOT possibly
believe that you did a great job. If you do believe that you did a great job, then I would have to consider you as a non-caring self serving fool or you are simply retarded!!! Please make amends.
