Lens On Talent: Vondie Curtis-Hall
Published by Marcus Vanderberg on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at 2:18 pm.Vondie Curtis-Hall sat down with “Lens On Talent” host Kim Fields to discuss wearing different hats in the film industry.
After getting his start on Broadway as a stage actor, Curtis-Hall took to Hollywood and appeared in a series of films and television shows including “Soul Food,” “ER,” and “Chicago Hope.” Similar to Fields, who transitioned from acting to behind the camera, Curtis-Hall began directing.
I knew for a while that I wanted to be a director, but my first transition into acting was from musicals and Broadway,” Cutis-Hall told Fields. “While I was on Broadway, I saw “She’s Gotta Have It,” Spike’s movie, and I said I think I want to become a filmmaker.”
“I went to film school after seeing “She’s Gotta Have It” and I was interested in cinematography at that point and just finding a way to tell stories,” he added. “Ultimately, I knew I wanted to be a director.”
In 1997, Curtis-Hall wrote and directed ”Gridlock’d,” starring Tupac Shakur and Tim Roth. Later on, he directed “Waist Deep” with Tyrese.
This week’s short film is “Blue Nude” by Ricky Horne, Jr. It’s a story about a 20-year-old aspiring artist named Boston who is still living with his mother and dealing with his father’s passing. On top of economic hard times, he finds out that his beloved father had a lifelong affair with his estranged godmother, who is also esteemed politician, Lena Shaw. Following a spat with his mother, Boston pays his godmother a visit. His appearance both solves and creates some problems.
Below are the other short films featured in Sunday’s episode:
